Maneuvers
- Objectives: To leem the pnoper procedure for performing the following mtneuyers:
- l. Straight line backing.
2. Backing right and left
3. Thrce-pointtum
- 4. Side-road right tumanotrnd
5. Side-road left tumarormd
- 6. Parking uphill with a curb
7. Parking uphill without a curb
- 8. Parking downhill with a cub
9. Parking downhill without a curb
10. Angle parking
I 1. Perpendicular parking
12. Parallel parking
- This section will outline the correct procedure for various driving maneuvers. These
_ maneuvers should be practiced in conjunction with the different driving lessons. Practicing
one or two of the different maneuve$ along with the driring lesson will give variety to the
_ session. Select an appropriatsarcaforpracticing the various maneuvers.
Fundamentels of Backin g
l. CONTROL SPEED. This means to creep slowly, never fast.
2. Check traffic conditions in all directions. Know urhat's arormd your vehicle before
youmove.
3. Look inthe directionthe vehicle is moving.
4. Steer carefully. The vehicle is more responsive to the slightest movement ofthe steering
wheel.
5. Do not face the front until the vehicle has completely stopped.
6. Front of vehicle swings in the opposite direction from back as vehicle is steered.
7. Stop vehicle completely before shifting from forward to reverse gear.
Tip: Good speed control gives you time to see andjudge.
40
I
Procedure for Streight and Cuned Backing
l. Hold foot brake securely and shift into reverse gear.
2. Release the parking brake if it is set.
3. Check traffic conditions in all directions.
4. Straight backing. Tum head and body to the right until you can see ttrough the rear
window. Place left hand near the top of the steering wheel with right ann on the back of
seat or on passenger seat.
Release the foot brake gadua[y rmtil vehicle begins to creep. Control speed with brake
pressure. Sometimes acceleration may be needed, but just enough to get vehicle moving.
Steer with very slight movements of the steering wheel as needed to continue in a straight
path.
5. Curved Becking. Turn head and body in the direction you intend to go. Glance from
one spot to another as needed. (Front of vehicle may need to be checked depending on
the situation.)
Release ttre foot brake gradually until vehicle begins to creep. Control speed with brake
pressure. Sometimes acceleration may be needed, but just enough to get vehicle moving.
Steer in the direction and with &e arnount of turning needed to make the vehicle follow
your intended path.
Tip: Control your speed and lookwhere you are going.
Turn top of steering wheel the woy you want rear of vehicle to go.
Practice backing should be done in off-street area away from traffic. Practice bottr straight
and curved backing.
The illustration which follows shows a good practice maneuver to use. From start, turn sharp
lefl travel a few feet, then turn sharp right. Travel a few feet, then straighten the wheels and
travel straight back. This is good for steering, looking, judging, and to see if the teen can
retum the vehicle to a straight path after steering sharply.
4l
Straight-Line Backing
! l. Tum onhazardlights.
tr 2. Keep right foot onbrake.
E 3. Shift into REVERSE.
il 4. Tum your body to the right, and put
your right ann over the back of the
passenger seat. Look back through the
window.
5. Put your left hand at ttre top of the
steering wheel at the 12 o'clock
position.
tr6. Sound horn.
[7. Release pressure on the brake just
enough to allow the vehicle to creep
backward slowly.
88. While looking back through the rear
window, pick an object behind the
vehicle at a distance. Look straight at
the object and do not let the vehicle veer
left or right. If the vehicle moves left,
steer right; if vehicle moves right, steer
left gently. The big secret to backing is
to back slowly.
D9. Keep your right foot over the brake
pedal while your vehicle is moving
baclorard. Continue to look back
through the rear window as you brake
until the vehicle stops completely.
Tip: While backing, cayer the broke with the rightfoot, unless you need to accelerate
sliqhtly.
42
Backing to the Right or Left
n l. Before backing, check for
traffic, pedestrians, parked
t!2r3. .
vehicles, and any stationary
D4. objects in front, around, and
behind you.
Dn65.. Keep right foot on brake.
Shift into REVERSE.
7. Turn on hazaxd lights.
Sound hom.
8. Turn your head toward the
9. direction you will be backing.
Keep both hands on the wheel,
ready for hand-over-hand
steering. Pull the wheel to the
left to back left. Pull the wheel
to the right to back right. The
back of your vehicle will go in
the direction you want the
vehicle to go.
Back slowly irs you enter the
turn. Make quick glances to the
front and sides to be sure no one
is near. Begin to unwind the
steering wheel to finish the turn
in a straight position.
Continue looking to the rear
until coming to a complete stop.
Tip: When backing to the left, your visual searchwill primarily be over your left
shoulder through the lefi side windows. When backing right, you will look over
your right shoulder and through the right side windows. Use hand-over-hand
steering.
When backing left, allow a wide space on the right side. The front wheels will
move far to the right of the rear wheels. The front ofyour vehicle will swing wide
to the right. When backing right, allow a wide space on the left side.
43
Three-Point Tumabout
tr 1. From location I check front and
rear zones. Signal right and stop
close to the curb as shown in
location 2. Checkraffic ahead,
to the rear, and over your left
shoulder. Signal a left tum.
n 2. Search front and rear zones as
you tum sharply left. Move to
location 3 with wheels straight.
Stop before hitting the curb.
n J. Check all traffic again. Tum the
wheels sharply right while
backing slowly to location 4.
Back only as far as necessary to
complete the maneuver and
before hitting the curb. Stop
with wheels straight.
tr 4. Check traflic again and signal
left. Move slowly forward while
steering left toward location 5.
n 5. Be sure that there are no objects
along the curb in the path of
your tums.

zones. Signal a left turn and use
the left-tum procedure to move
to location 2. Stay as close to
the right side as possible. Stop
with your wheels straight when
your vehicle is completely off
the street.
Check traffic again, especially
from the right. Back slowly to
the right to location 3. Look to
the right rear and side while
