The IHM Development Fund Committee hosted a great golf outing at Lake Isle this October. Thank you to all our sponsors and everyone who participated to support IHM school. A special thank you to our Fundraising Chair, Bobbi Roberts, and her team for organizing another fantastic event. The IHM Development Fund Golf Outing raised over $25,000 to benefit the long-term sustainability of IHM school. The outing was enjoyed by current and past parents, alumni, parishioners, and friends of IHM. It was a wonderful day dedicated to celebrating the past, present, and future of the Immaculate Heart of Mary School while enjoying the beautiful weather on the links. Save the date for what is sure to be another amazing outing on Monday, October 7, 2024! FAL L , 2023 VOLUME 2 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT FUND GOLF OUTING 2023
Tunnels to Towers Color Fun Run Students and their families at IHM raised over $33,000 to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The IHM Runs to Remember event was an amazing day honoring our heroes and first responders on 9/11. Tunnel to Towers Museum Visit: Students in fifth through eighth grades visited the traveling museum, examined artifacts, and learned about the events of 9/11 from first responders and volunteers. Mrs. Keelin and Msgr. Sweeney presented a check from IHM School to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
A Glimpse into some of the amazing things happening at IHM! First grade went apple-picking together at Stuart’s Farm. Our CYO Volleyball Clinic participants learned some tips and tricks from Sacred Heart’s volleyball team. The sixth grade supplemented their classwork on Greek mythology with a trip to Broadway to see Hadestown. Msgr. Sweeney read the story of Saint Nicholas to the kindergarten students as they laid their shoes out by the class fireplace for a special treat! The third grade started the Christmas season off at the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. Seventh graders looked spooktacular at the Halloween Dance this October. IHM’s CYO cross-country team had another successful season. Students enjoyed a laser light presentation on kindness and anti-bullying. PreK and K students made their own apple cider with help from Greenburgh Nature Center.
“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10) The Hope Circle is a student service club run by IHM alum and current parent, Kate (Leonard) Viviano ‘95. Students in 4th-8th grades gather weekly for service activities. Activities this fall included writing letters to nursing home residents and military veterans, cooking and delivering food at the Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon, and helping pack boxes of donated goods for service members from the IHM “Let’s be Grateful” Thanksgiving Drive. Students ran a carwash in September to raise the funds needed for their service projects.
What is one of your favorite memories, classes, teachers, or activities while attending IHM as a student? It is hard to narrow this down to one favorite memory. My favorite part of IHM was the people, the community. This showed up in so many ways. First, I had wonderful classmates. I can look back at my yearbooks (which are in my living room) and have fond memories of everyone. My teachers were fantastic educators and even better people. I felt known and seen by all of them. The icing on the cake is that IHM is a family tradition and I was lucky to go to school with so many cousins. Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Kathryn Finnerty Britton, M.D., MPH, Class of 1988 Meet Dr. Kathryn Britton: Associate Chief Medical Officer, Vice President for Medical Affairs, and Cardiologist in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts. Kathryn's academic journey began at IHM, where she attended kindergarten through eighth grade. She then pursued higher education at The Ursuline School, Harvard University for her undergraduate studies, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for her M.D., and Harvard School of Public Health for her Masters in Public Health. Kathryn credits her education and experiences at IHM as foundational for her life and career today. Some special class memories include first communion with Mrs. Camuti, climbing to the top of the rope as part of the Presidential fitness test with Madame Muckell, Mrs. Dufault making popcorn for the fourth grade class with her air-popper, field trips and sports at Hyatt field, my classmate Sanjay reciting God Bless America at a school performance, science with Ms. Mignon when she brought in blow dryers and sand to teach us about erosion, diagraming sentences and reading Death Be Not Proud with Dr. K, sports carpools in the Amoroso Family’s minivan, our basketball rivalry with St. John’s and our amazing coaches Mr. Tommy French (father of Allison French, IHM class of 1986) and my Uncle Jimmy Lewis (father of IHM graduates, Noreen, Rob and Chris Lewis), and our 8th grade trip to Boston. My cringeworthy moment was the time when I was quoted in the local newspaper that I was happy to play the Virgin Mary in the school pageant because I got out of class…
How has your education at IHM influenced or helped you in your life and career? My time at IHM was joyful. At the time, I didn’t realize I was getting an amazing education and solidifying the moral and ethical foundations that shaped my character. I was just having an amazing time. I am extremely grateful for the foundation IHM (and my family) provided. Nowadays, in my professional career, I am a cardiologist and run my own small business doing healthcare consulting. In both parts of my profession, I find meaning and motivation by trying to positively impact people’s lives (whether taking care of an individual patient and family or trying to improve how hospitals run). I find that I use all the knowledge and skills that I first learned at IHM every day. Perhaps more importantly, my education prepared me to try to do what is right, to be an advocate, to speak up, to try new things, and to fail and keep going. In my personal life, I am extremely fortunate to have a supportive husband and two amazing children. Now, I get to give back in many of the ways that people contributed to me. I coach sports, carpool, lead a Girl Scout troop, pick out books for my children, and try to be a mentor as so many did for me. I also make time for exercise and friends as the positive vibes I get from both haven’t changed since IHM. I also greatly appreciate my Catholic faith (something I likely took for granted) and had the honor of serving as a Confirmation sponsor for my nephew Robbie (son of my sister Ellen Finnerty Torres, IHM ‘86) and celebrating the First Communion of my two children in our local parish, St. Ignatius. Time with family, including my brother (Bobby Finnerty, IHM ‘91) and his wife and children, my extended family (including 7 cousins who attended IHM and their children, including Finn Tobin, IHM ’26 , Eamon Tobin, IHM ‘29, Maeve Tobin, IHM ’33, and Grace Bonello, IHM ‘33), and the extensive family into which I have married, are all a source of ongoing gratitude. Do you have any advice for current students? My advice to current students is to enjoy this time in elementary school and to be joyful and inquisitive. I encourage everyone to play a lot, be kind, ask questions, and be bold! How do you (or plan to) give back or engage with IHM? I am EXCITED for the reunion and hope to see many familiar faces. Besides contributing monetarily, I am very open to ideas about how to engage or give back to IHM. With Zoom, etc. I would be extremely open to providing career advice and mentoring to current students or alumni. I am also open to any other ideas.
