INTRODUCTION
In the year 2021, UNIMAS signed agreements with the two
medical universities of the Russian Federation: A memorandum
of agreement (MoA) with the Astrakhan State Medical
University and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the
Volgograd State Medical Universities. These agreements
stipulated students’ and lecturers’ exchange between the parties
of the agreements, cooperation in research and curriculum
developments.
Medical education in Russia has a long and glorious history with
the oldest medical faculty (currently Sechenov University) being
more than 250 years old, with Nobel Laureates in medicine (Ivan
Pavlov – medicine and physiology; and Ilia Mechnikov –
medicine and immunology), with several world-renowned
medical doctors making a tremendous contribution to clinical
medicine (Nikolay Pirogov – in surgery, Sergey Botkin – in
internal diseases, Vladimir Filatov – in ophthalmology).
In spite being quite young, medical education in Malaysia is
developing very fast, demonstrating excellence in teaching and
learning, as evidenced by high ranking of the Malaysian
universities in the international ranking systems, such as QS
(Universiti Malaya is in the 1st hundred, while USM, UKM and
UPM are in the 2nd hundred). Malaysia is holding a leading
position in Asia in curriculum development. It was one of the
pioneers to introduce a fully integrated curriculum and PBL
among world medical universities.
INTRODUCTION
UNIMAS has developed a solid fully integrated curriculum of
preclinical medical training with PBL as its key point. Volgograd
State and Medical University and Astrakhan State Medical
University are practicing traditional, vertically integrated
version of medical curriculum and have a great interest get
acquainted with the latest achievements of UNIMAS curriculum
development. Volgograd Medical University is in the top five
Russian Universities and is widely known for its development of
personification of medical education. Astrakhan State Medical
University is a leader in undergraduate students’ research and
conduct of different Olympiads and Practical Skills competitions
among the medical students. All the parties of the aforesaid
agreements are eager to share experience in their advanced
areas and benefit from the best experiences of their partners.
Malaysian-Russian Anatomical and Allied Health Sciences
Symposium is the 1st big event which is believed to be a trigger
of the future interactions and collaborations beneficial for
every party.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Anatomical and Allied Health Sciences
Symposium are:
i. To update on the knowledge among the medical academician
regarding medical education in Malaysia and Russia.
ii. To strengthen collaboration and networking between
UNIMAS and other universities in Malaysia and Russia.
