52 Advertise from just £24 per month* | Call 07875 538 848THE MEANDERING NATURALISTIn search of the Asian elephantBY COLIN HAIRAt the beginning of this year, I joined a tour to explore the diverse wildlife and long history of Sri Lanka. I travelled in the expectation of seeing many species of birds and with luck Asian elephants in the wild and if very lucky a leopard. The ancient relatives of elephants have existed for sixty million years and consist of at least one hundred and eighty five species of the order Proboscidea, identified from fossil remains. Today just the three species of elephants remain; the African savanna, African forest and Asian elephants of several sub-species. They originated in Africa but after the Afro-Arabian tectonic plate collided with the vast Eurasian landmass the opportunities for further evolution were greatly increased. Fossils of the straight-tusked elephant have been found in the eastern counties of England from about one hundred and twenty thousand years ago and Wooly Mammoths from the last ice-age.Sri Lanka has a vast network of ancient reservoirs which are used to irrigate the fields and especially the rice fields. On our very first day we were stunned by the numbers of egrets and Indian herons along with other waders feeding in the rice fields. Elephants are still used in the timber industry and for tourism but can no longer be taken from the wild population. It is estimated that there are just under six thousand elephants in Sri Lanka; down by nearly sixty-five percent since the beginning of the nineteenth century. They also live in a more restricted range due to loss of habitat from forest clearance and the disruption of mxwigratory routes by the expansion of towns and cities. Seventy percent of elephant ranges enter agricultural land, causing tension and conflict, resulting in elephant and human deaths. It was not until towards the end of my holiday while visiting Yala National Park in the south of Sri Lanka that we were lucky enough to come across a herd of wild Indian elephants.Herd size ranges from twelve to twenty in matriarchal groups; young males leave the herd after about ten years, forming bachelor herds. The herd we came across consisted of females with some calves and some young males. There was one ‘tusker’ male; it is quite rare for bull Asian elephants to have tusks. Asian elephants are considered a woodland species, but they will also eat grass. It was interesting to observe the adult’s behaviour as they gently lifted the turf with their toenails, before gathering it with their trunks into small clumps which they rubbed on their lower legs, before placing into their mouth. The trunk is a wonder of evolution, formed from the nose and upper lip and consists of fifty thousand muscles with a brain to match such complexity. The trunk is very versatile and apart from being able to hold great weights and up to four litres of water, it can be lifted to act as a snorkel while fording rivers. Elephants use the trunk to touch other animals for reassurance, to caress, for greetings and mutually intertwining hugs and for sexual advances. They also produce low pitched sounds which are audible three kilometres away. There is so much we do not understand about these animals.Asian elephants are found in thirteen countries. It was estimated in 2019 that there were between forty-eight and fifty-three thousand elephants in the wild with thirty thousand found in India where numbers are fairly stable. The overall population trend for Asian elephants is downwards especially in Vietnam, Indonesia and Laos. The Asian elephant is considered endangered by the IUCN along with the African savanna elephant, while the African forest elephant is critically endangered.Shutterstock.com

In this guise, the K40 EVX costs £47,495, so around 10k more than the similarly specced petrol variant.Launched in the UK last year, it comes with a 10 year / 1,000,000 kilometre battery warranty and while a totally new vehicle, it still hangs on to KGM’s distinctive chunky characteristics. The new design philosophy shows through in distinctive features like the horizontal LED daytime driving lights and the bonnet grab handles (cosmetic rather than functional), while inside there are dual 12.3 inch digital screens showing all the driver needs to know. The choice of background colour can make the screen directly ahead of the driver a bit indistinct in certain light, particularly if the horizon view is selected, so best to stick to the plain screen.EVX has a 73.4kWh BYD lithium ion phosphate battery with its cell to pack technology for higher energy efficiency and enhanced safety.Quoted range is 287 miles, and on a 100kW charger you can be up from 20 to 80 per cent in 37 minutes. 58 Advertise from just £24 per month* | Call 07875 538 848 GardeningA good garden might be visited by 22 species of butterfly and hundreds of different moths each year, depending on where you live.Yet three-quarters of the 59 resident butterfly species that remain in Britain are in decline, including the most common ones: the large white, small white, red admiral, peacock and small tortoiseshell.Butterfly Conservation president Sir David Attenborough says: “Almost unbelievably, much of Britain’s countryside is a no-go area for many favourite butterflies. Habitat has been ploughed up or become overgrown. Anybody who’s been for a country walk recently will tell you butterflies are a rarity. Scientists fear that in some areas we’re entering a post-butterfly era.”Butterflies love heavily-scented flowers, so plant Sedum spectabile and Verbena bonariensis to attract them into your garden.Nectar-rich plants such as cowslip (Primula veris), bugle (Ajuga reptans), lavender and honesty flowers will also encourage them in. Many good nectar plants are hardy, perennial and easy to grow.Grow flowers in sunny, sheltered areas, as butterflies will seek out the warmest parts of your garden.Create shelter for butterflies by planting shrubs and small trees such as common honeysuckle around the edges of your plot, but make sure your flower beds remain in full sunlight.Keep a good variety of flowers which are available from early spring to autumn in your garden. Plants such as Buddleia davidii will give butterflies the fuel they need to keep them airborne.Early flowers are great for butterflies just emerging from hibernation, such as aubrieta, bluebell, clover, forget-me-not, pansy, primrose and wallflower. In late summer and autumn some species need to build up their reserves in preparation for winter, so benefit from late-summer bloomers including buddleia, sedum, ivy, Michaelmas daisy, mint, scabiousand thyme.Creating a wild area within your garden can encourage butterfly species to breed. Simply allow grasses and wild flowers which are already there to grow, or supplement them with extra plants. In the first year of growing the wild area, cut it several times to allow the wild flowers a chance against other competitive grasses.Your garden can help SAVE the ButterflyFor more information visitwww.butterfly-conservation.org
