There are solutions for all budgets and I’ll always walk you through the options honestly, including being upfront if there is a cheaper solution, or if there might be limitations that could come back to bite you. I’d rather be honest and save you spending money twice.I can also help with larger networking projects for businesses, CCTV and alarm installations, and anything else that involves getting your property connected and secure.Quick HelpSomething I’m doing differently this time, is making support more accessible. The idea of paying for a full hour when you only need ten minutes puts a lot of people off asking for help, and I don’t think its fair way of billing. So I’ve set up a Quick Help service where I charge in 10 minute blocks. Remote help, over the phone, or you can come to me. If you just need a quick question answered or someone to point you in the right direction, you pay for that and nothing more. I still offer full home and business visits too, because sometimes you just need someone there with you.Scams and Staying SafeScams are getting more sophisticated all the time and they catch people out every day, people who are sharp and switched on. Part of what I want to do is help the community understand what to look out for, in a straightforward and honest way.I’m also aware that for anyone who’s had a scammer access their computer remotely, having an IT person then do the same thing to fix it, can feel uncomfortable, even when the intentions are completely different. I take that seriously and work at whatever pace feels right. I’ll explain everything I’m doing as I go with no judgement. What I’m Hoping ForTotnes has businesses that genuinely care about the people they serve. That’s how Tech-Nes operates. Visitors to the wealth of tulip festivals across the UK this year will be able to admire a sea of glorious colour from these famous bulbs, from the smallest species to the more frilly parrot varieties and majestic, tall Darwins. It’s a joyous time for Dutch bulb expert Eric Breed, nurseryman and cultivator, a self-confessed ‘bulbaholic’ who has travelled to many remote parts of the world to see bulbs growing in their native habitat. He grew up near the tulip fields of Holland, so naturally knows more than most about growing these dazzling spring bulbs. Always looking forward, his favourites include, Tulipa ‘Leo’, a scarlet Darwin hybrid which is a completely different shape from its peers.“Its flowers are feather-like, almost like a Japanese maple,” he enthuses. “Show it to your friends and they’ll want some too.”The time to plant tulips is all important, Breed explains. Plant them too early and it will be too warm and they won’t root. They need a drop in temperature to root well. “The best time for planting is late October to November and sometimes into December. They need moist, well-drained soil which is not too acid, adding coarse sand to make the drainage better. If planting tulips in pots, mix the compost with at least 20% sand, he advises, so that it drains well. If you put the pots outside in the winter, don’t let the plants dry out. If you use a regular clay pot, it will dehydrate the soil so you’ll need to water it occasionally in the winter.Gardeners who don’t water sufficiently in the cooler months are likely to see the leaves of their tulips turning purple and brown, the plants will be stunted and flowers which wilt quickly, he warns.Breed puts his containers near the house in the winter, exposing them more to the elements from February onwards and making sure they don’t dry out. As the flowers emerge, they should be watered every other day, he advises. In beds and borders, the taller varieties such as Darwins look great planted with pulmonarias, heuchera and tiarella, hardy geraniums and ground-covering sedums and vincas.Tulips don’t like shade, so avoid planting them under tree canopies or the stems are likely to fall over.In pots, they look good as stand-alone specimens or combined with other bulbs in the ‘sandwich’ method. Breed puts Iris reticulata, dwarf daffodils and tulips in the same pot. The iris will bloom first, then the daffodils and finally the tulips.“Alternatively combine bulbs which bloom together, such as the blue jacket hyacinth with a Jetfire tulip. But you need to make sure your varieties will bloom at the same time and also, don’t plant the pot too full. Some people try to put too many bulbs in a pot and they use so much water, the pots dry out within a few hours,” he says. Some tulips will come back in subsequent years, while others will need lifting and replanting in late autumn.Remove all the dead flowers, which can cause botrytis (grey mould) if left to fall on the foliage.“The best varieties in general are the Darwin hybrids, fosterianas, the greigii tulips and kaufmanniana. Of course the soil has to be good, but if the Darwin hybrids and fosterianas are planted a little deeper than normal they can come back for many years.“Many people plant their tulips in conditions which are not ideal, or take away the foliage early - it needs to be left for six weeks after flowering or it won’t make a new bulb, the same as narcissi.”A year later, the tulips may come up a bit earlier but the flowers should remain true to their colour, he says.If you want tulips to naturalise, they need the right conditions. If an area is too wet in the summer, they won’t come back. Tulips require dry soil in summer, so a wet August could hinder their return. Add organic matter in December to the soil where the tulips are planted. If a heavy frost is predicted, pots should be covered with horticultural fleece or sacking. With a little inspiration, this time next year you could have your own little tulip field of Holland in your garden at home.Triumphant Tulips54 Advertise from just £24 per month* | Call 07875 538 848for new students who enrol for the Autumn term

58 Advertise from just £24 per month* | Call 07875 538 848 THE MEANDERING NATURALISTIn search of goldfinchesBY COLIN HAIRThe population of Goldfinches in the United Kingdom fell by forty percent during the first ninety years of the twentieth century, only to recover by one hundred and fifty percent since the 1990s; with 1.2 million pairs breeding each year. It is not clear why this has occurred but some of the ‘stewardship farming schemes’ will have helped land management for cirl buntings also aids butterflies and other insects and other species of birds, and plants. The feeding of sunflower seeds in gardens and in particular nyger seeds has attracted goldfinches to feeders during the winter months. It is probably at feeders that we are most likely to get a very good, close-up view, of these birds .My photograph was taken at the RSPB Exminster marshes and shows a pair of goldfinches feeding on some rushes. They sometimes catch small spiders, but they are predominantly seed eaters with specialised pointed and strong beaks for probing into thistle heads and teasels. During the winter months, flocks of finches comprising several species, can be seen together on unploughed earth, where seed bearing plants provide a vital meal. If anything disturbs them, they all fly up before settling down again when the threat has passed. At RSPB Labrador Bay dozens of linnets, another type of finch, can be seen feeding and flying above fields managed for spring sown barley. The cirl buntings fly from the hedges down to the ground to feed and back to the hedge if a predator appears. It is quite hard to identify small birds feeding in fields, often too far away even to see them clearly with good binoculars. Given practise, the shape and behaviour, flight and perhaps song, all provide clues or the ‘giss’, which help to identify the different species. Goldfinches have a distinctive undulating flight, the golden wing bars might be visible and they make a twittering call as they fly. They only weigh between fourteen and nineteen grams, smaller than greenfinches, chaffinches or bullfinches. Don’t be afraid to ask fellow bird watchers, in hides or other popular sites, for help to identify birds: in my experience they will be only too happy to help and may even allow you to use their telescope. It is the best way to improve your bird watching skills. Goldfinches are sexually dimorphic; the male has a larger red face mask and a longer and stronger bill.Once spring comes around, the finches pair up for one year only and after making a cup shaped nest, the female incubates the five eggs and once hatched both parents feed the young on regurgitated seeds. After fledging, in thirteen to eighteen days, the young join mixed age groups or ‘charms’ and it is in these groups that they learn the complex song. It is from the ‘Old English’ that the collective noun is derived and it means noisy. Each pair of goldfinches may produce two or three broods in a year. On average each bird only survives for two years but the record for a ringed bird is just over ten years. A couple of facts I picked up while researching goldfinches and as it is Easter as I write: goldfinches sometimes appear in Christian imagery as a symbol of Christ’s Passion, see Jan van Eyck, the legend has it, that a goldfinch pulled a thorn from the crown of thorns around Christ’s head and in so doing was splashed by the blood of Christ. Also, the Latin name for the goldfinch is Carduelis carduelis coming from the Latin for thistle. I am happy and fortunate to say, that I gave up Latin after six years of toil to study biology.Enjoy our wonderful wildlife this springtime.Shutterstock.com
