Pastor Marc Brown
May I ask you a question that is pushing me to grow? If you said “yes”, great, and if you said “no”, great, I am going
to share it anyway. Why did Jesus come to earth? You may want to quote John 3:16 “For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.” This is a
good verse and it points to God’s love for us. God‘s love will never stop and through Christ Jesus it is something we
can never be separated from. There are numerous Bible verses to back this up. See if you can find one!
The reality is God does love us, but didn’t God love us before he sent Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to the world? Did
Jesus come to say “I love you!”, give a few hugs and ‘knucks’ and then go back to heaven? If this is why he came,
then why did Jesus have to die on a cross? If it was just to say “I love you” then the cross seems unnecessary.
Would you agree with me?
So then we need to remember that Jesus Christ “died as a ransom to set them free from the sins
committed…” (Hebrews 9:15). Yes, Jesus Christ came to demonstrate God’s love for us – this is undeniable. Yet I
remind you, Jesus Christ came to pay to the price for sin – mine and yours. Sin brought brokenness to our
relationship with God and a debt that needed to be addressed in order for things to be restored and get better. You
and I would have been tempted to try to solve this issue, but we would never have the resources or gumption to get
it done properly.
Jesus Christ came to the earth to demonstrate both Grace (love) and Truth (healing from sin). As I have looked at
Jesus’s ministry the last couple of weeks, I am confronted with how he did this consistently. Read about Jesus and
his ministry and you will see ‘Grace and Truth’ brought in the right balance to bring life, hope and healing for those
who will receive it. We need the right balance so that we have hope, but are also stirred to realize we have an issue
and need to change. Not everyone receives Jesus ‘Grace and Truth’ and they remain broken and lost.
The problem also occurs if we get to much grace and not enough truth. We aren’t confronted with the reality that
there is an issue and we continue on like there are no issues. If we get too much truth and not enough grace, we find
judgement and there is no hope for us to be different. Yet, when we encounter ‘Grace and Truth’ as Jesus Christ
delivers it; we find love, an awareness of our brokenness and the hope and healing that he offers to change our lives.
It is proven in the scriptures. Is it proven in you and me? May we be a people who Journey with Jesus to be like
Jesus, so that God’s Kingdom may come and the ‘Grace and Truth’ of his coming may be encountered.

Vacation Bible School (July 15-18 )- We are beginning to get our station leaders and crew leaders
signed up. Please let us know if you can volunteer as planning is vital to the success of VBS! You
can sign up on the poster outside the office or talk with myself or Briana. We are in need of: 2 liter
empty pop bottles (48), caps from water bottles (70), regular size bottles of bubbles (40), small
bottles of hand sanitizers (40), sandwich size Ziploc bags (140), 2-3 inch rubber bands (280). You
can put them in a box inside office.
VBS Volunteer “Job” Descriptions
Crew Leader: A crew leader is an adult who is assigned to 5-6 children all the same age and is
responsible for taking children around to the various stations during VBS. Each station has it’s own
leader, so a crew leader does not “teach” the station, but simply chaperones their assigned children
and helps them with the activities as needed. This volunteer opportunity is perfect for almost
ANYONE! Don’t have as much energy as you used to? Volunteer to lead older children! VBS is open
to children ages 5-10 years. Let us know which age you prefer!
Assistant Crew Leader: An assistant crew leader is the person responsible for helping the crew
leader of their assigned group. It’s always good to have more hands on deck when dealing with
unpredictable, energetic littles ones! As an assistant, you will help the crew leader take the children
from station to station and perhaps give one-on-one attention to a child in need!
Station Leader: A station leader is someone assigned to “lead” a station. The VBS program
booklet has all the information and suggestions you need to run each station, so it’s just a matter of
presenting the material and planning the activities. Training will be provided! Contact Gail for more
information about each station to see if any of them interest you!

The Men’s Ministry Group at SUMC is called The
Journeymen.
It is as stated a Men’s Ministry, in other words the Men of the
Church (SUMC and Beyond) Ministering to each other.
We gather together, break bread (this means that we eat) together
while discussing various topics.
Surprisingly or not, the majority of the conversation revolves around the LORD and Jesus Christ, how our
relationship with both is shaping our lives. How our Journey with Jesus to become more like Jesus is going. What are
areas of the Journey are we having difficulty or trouble understanding what the LORD would have us do. Where do
we go for support, understanding, advice or counsel? If not our brothers in Christ, then who? There is no guarantee
that the correct answer to any question exists within the Journeymen but, we will share your struggle, help as we
can and most importantly help to lift you up to the Father, as HE has the answer to every situation. Join us and Grow
closer to your Christian Brothers and hopefully closer to Jesus in the process.

Food Pantry News for April
John 6:35—And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth in me shall never thirst.
Your Food Donations Making a Difference
Ever wonder what happened to that jar of peanut butter you donated to the church
food pantry? Of course, we don’t keep track of individual jars of peanut butter, but
here’s what happened with one jar. After being placed in the shopping cart at
church, a volunteer put this peanut butter on a shelf in our food pantry. It didn’t
have to wait long! A referral came in from empty tomb for a food delivery to a
family in an emergency situation—a family with six children. After the family was
contacted, the SUMC volunteer pulled that peanut butter from the food pantry
shelf, bagged the jar with other food items, placed the bags into the car with a few
purchased groceries, and delivered that food, in the name of Jesus, to a very
grateful family! We can only imagine the rest of the story for our jar of peanut
butter, but we can be certain it was put to use in feeding a hungry family at a
difficult time. Thank you for placing peanut butter (and other food items!) into the
food pantry shopping cart. Your generous donations to the SUMC Food Pantry are
making a difference in lives throughout our community.
Food Pantry Update
• From Feb. 22-Mar. 21, food was delivered to 13 families (16 adults, 8 children) with referrals from empty tomb and
SUMC members.
• At Shadowwood on March 5, food was distributed to 13 families, a total of 48 persons.
• About 150 sack lunches are made each week for Canteen Run.
