Tanker

For those of you who have not met our dog, this is
Tanker. He is a Golden Retriever that will be 8 in

December. He is a great dog for our family – gentle,
loving, patient, and playful. He doesn’t require

much – a little food, a little water, and a little
petting. Outside of a little hair, ok a bunch of hair,

we don’t have many issues.

When we moved to Savoy, we wondered how we

would keep him in the yard as he was used to a fenced in back yard in Canton. In the beginning, we
had a cable connected to an anchor that we would attach him to when he wanted to go outside on

his own. If there was someone outside, we would let him loose and he would stay in the yard. Over
the last four years, we have gotten comfortable with Tanker staying around and we have stopped

putting him on the cable. We trusted he would go out, take care of business and do a “little”
exploring. We made his yard the church property and that is where we thought he was… for the

most part.

A couple of weeks ago, we got a phone call from a woman who said she found our dog down

Duncan Rd. past the cemetery walking in the middle of the road. Thankfully, we put Laura’s phone
number on Tanker’s tag and so she was able to notify us. After a few moments, the woman and her

daughter arrived at our house; they got out of their car with Tanker on a leash and brought him to
the door. He was ready to be home, but Tanker also knew he was in trouble. He has a way of

hanging his head when he is in trouble. The mother and daughter left and Tanker and I had a brief
conversation and then he was put in the utility room for the afternoon. I went and found the

anchor and cable and put them back in the yard. Tanker is now no longer allowed to roam free

unless we are out with him and our eyes will be watchful to make sure he doesn’t “slip” out of view.
We love this dog and we don’t want him hurt or at risk, and so we are putting boundaries in place to

keep him safe.

Later as I was reflecting on the situation, God brought several thoughts through my head.

Unless we discipline ourselves, we will act just like Tanker and slowly stretch our boundaries
and put ourselves at risk. Even though we know where we are safe and taken care of, we can

drift from home. For some reason, we are tempted to go to places where we are not safe, are
tempted and put ourselves at risk of being hurt and scarred. Isn’t this the case of Adam and

Eve? God had taken care of all their needs, but they decided to wander and their choices
brought chaos. It wasn’t their plan, but they lost sight of the big picture and wound up
getting hurt. We have been acting like them ever since, wandering from God’s side and care

even though we know where we belong. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God.” Funny how a dog could remind us about our relationship with God and

how we treat him. God loves us and doesn’t want us hurt and has given us boundaries as
defined by the Bible and the Church to keep us safe. God has proven his care of us; we need

to surrender and trust Our Heavenly Father to care for us.

The other thought that God brought to my attention was praise God for the mother and

daughter who were willing to risk caring for a dog that wasn’t theirs. They took the time,

energy and effort to bring Tanker home. Are we willing to do that? Are we willing to take the
time, energy and effort to bring other individuals home to their Heavenly Father? Our mission

at Savoy UMC is to Journey with Jesus to be like Jesus - Jesus took the time and energy and
effort to make a way for us to get home and has pursued us to bring us back home. If we are

to be like Jesus, it will require us to take the time, energy and effort to reach out to those who
are lost or wandering and help guide them back home. Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful, but

the workers are few” (Luke 10:2 NIV). I know we are grateful that Tanker is safely back at
home. Our rejoicing is nothing compared to the rejoicing God does when one of his children

comes home (Luke 15:10).

It is funny to me how God can use a dog to teach you how to Journey with Jesus to be like

Jesus.

Fellowship Team

Paula and I would like to thank those that have signed up to host Fellowship for our friends after

worship each Sunday.

Currently for the month of August, we have no one scheduled to host August 26. September is

coming up. Please look over the Fellowship sign-up sheet. Find a Sunday that you, your family, or
your group would be willing to serve.

At this time Paula and I are asking if one or two members of our congregation would be willing to
join us in serving on the Fellowship Committee? We need someone to work with us in
coordinating Fellowship each Sunday. If you have questions please contact Paula Goebel or

myself, Rose Redmon. We look forward to hearing from you and welcome you to our committee.

A big THANK YOU to all who participated in the Food Packing Project on July 15!! We
exceeded our goal, as in just about an hour we had approximately 100 people pack

2,016 bags which will feed 12,096 people! What a powerful impact!!

This school year, Savoy United Methodist Church will be

partnering with Unity West Elementary School to help provide
support to students and families according to their needs. Coming

soon is an opportunity to be a Mystery Reader for first
graders. This is a simple way to bring joy to the students' day by

sharing a book with a class. More details will be shared in August
worship services on how you can make an impact in the school!

Christmas is coming! We will soon be packing Operation Christmas Child boxes, and

now is a great time to stock up on school supplies and other items during Back-to-
School sales! More details coming soon!

Linda Frizzell, Angela Hancock, Travis Heath, Jean Huddleston, Sue Maggio and

or event/meeting venues. Fees were determined with the purpose of

maintenance and good stewardship of SUMC facilities, and members’ time.

Anyone who wants to use church facilities for anything other than scheduled

worship services must make a reservation with Briana McDade in order to put
the meeting or event on the calendar to avoid double booking of rooms. All

set-up and tear-down of chairs and/or tables in the Main Room, if needed.

Men’s Minute

You a man? You know Jesus? You got it all figured out?

If you answered “Yes” to the first question, keep reading. If you answered “Yes”

or “No” to the second question, keep reading. If you answered “Yes” to the third
question – are you Jesus? If you are being real then you probably answered the

last question “No.” A men’s group has started and we wanted to let other men
know about it. We will be meeting the first and third Saturday of each month

from 7am-9am at the church. We will have some form of food and beverage for
your body – how much and what kind will depend. The real focus of our time
though is to build relationships with each other and Jesus Christ so that we might

Journey with Jesus to be like Jesus in our families, jobs, and church. If you
answered yes to the first question, then we invite you to come and check it out. If

you have any questions, you can contact Cecil Billingsley (352-7086), Brian
Markstahler (202-6488), or Pastor Marc (309-256-4192).

Transforming REAL kids into REAL

followers of Jesus.

Wow. That is the word I start with. God has been so good. There were times when

I stressed and God spoke to me in the thunder or through a person or a peace in my
soul. There is so much to thank Him for! Vacation Bible School was a success - 2

months to pull it off - many people stepping up to volunteer, sharing an
encouraging word and so much more! I knew it was Gods program, but I tried to be

in control and He kept telling me to let go. When I finally did, that is when people
started saying they would run this station or that station. There would be a new

crew leader, registration person, decorating person....I would tell God "it's only 2
weeks away and look at all the help we need and I would hear a very large clap of
thunder over my back porch. I'd say "ok, I can see that you are still leading this". I

had to cling to the Hope I have in Him and trust He has a plan. He will touch
peoples hearts to serve. I am not in control. He is. I will always remember this and

ponder this in my heart of His great goodness and love for His people. So, with that
said, we had 75 children registered and there were an average of 63 children each

night. Every volunteer put their whole self into this and the kids were
blessed. Seeds were planted! I'm so grateful to all of those who "stepped up" to

stand beside me and serve at my first VBS at Savoy.
We have a lot of things planned for the coming months. A Bible Scavenger Hunt for
family and friends on September 28th. A Trunk or Treat with a bounce house on

October 27. A family advent in December and so much more. This place will be
"rocking" with events and excitement while keeping our focus on our Lord and

Savior.
I will be setting up the Sunday school schedule on google sheets for September -

December. It would be great if you would add yourself where you can teach or let
me know. We will continue with Dig In by Group. Soon, we will be getting our half

doors for the nursery and preschool rooms. Things are moving along.
Again, thank you everyone who has walked the last two months with me.

Parkinson’s Support Group—Mondays at 10:00 AM

The Champaign County Parkinson’s Support Group meets at the Savoy United Methodist Church
every Monday from 10:00 am-11:15 am with usually 40+ people with Parkinson’s and their

caregivers in attendance. For some meetings, we welcome over 60 people!

A typical meeting opens with physical exercise led by a rehab nurse provided by OSF. Regular

exercise is critically important for people with Parkinson’s Disease. We then have a drumming

session (using plastic buckets) led by a volunteer, professional drummer. This activity provides eye/
hand coordination, exercise, and following verbal directions. The group then forms small

discussion circles to discuss topics of interest concerning Parkinson’s. Sometimes, the discussion
circles are separated so caregivers have an opportunity to explore topics addressing their

concerns. About once a month, an outside speaker addresses the group.

In it’s 5 years of service to the Parkinson’s community, there have been over 150 members. New

members are always welcome! The group is grateful to the church for its continuing support in
providing a welcoming place to meet.
