KINDERGARTEN PLACEMENT TESTING - JULY 21ST AND AUGUST 2ND

Do you have an incoming kindergarten student? To ensure that the beginning of the year runs smoothly, kindergarten students need to take a
placement test before the start of the 2022-2023 school year. All incoming kindergarten students must attend one of the two kindergarten
assessment days. The assessments will take place on July 21st and August 2nd from 9 am to 3 pm. Each appointment is approximately 20 minutes
long. Students will be assessed in the areas of language arts and reading. No preparation is needed! You simply need to bring your child at the
selected time. If you are unable to attend either session, your child will be placed into a temporary homeroom until the assessment can take place
during the first week of school.

If your child is fully registered for kindergarten or currently attends Prek at HHA, please make your appointment as soon as possible to ensure you
get your preferred date and time. Appointments can be made via email to Academic Coach, Katie Johnson, at [email protected] or through
Ms. Varner, the school secretary, at 410-396-9146. We look forward to meeting you and your child.

NEWS FROM THE HHA CHARTER OPERATOR
BALTIMORE CURRICULUM PROJECT

The horrific events in Buffalo and Uvalde have us all reeling, yet again profoundly shocked that
such mass shootings occur and we remain apparently unable to act in defense of our children. One question that always comes up at this time is
"How do we talk to our children?" There is a world of material available that can support parents who ask this question. You can email me, Jon
McGill, directly at BCP: [email protected], and I will send you information. I know that Mr. Hornbeck and Mr. Plunk at HHA can also advise
on this matter.

EXCITING NEW HIRES

Personal career decisions, retirements and out-of-state relocations resulted in a low number of openings at HHA for the 2022-2023 school year.
After posting positions a few months ago, outstanding educators from City Schools, across the region, and the country have expressed their desire
to work at HHA. We had more than 100 inquiries for seven openings. After interviewing, observing sample lessons and checking references, we
continue to put the finishing touches on our team for next year. You will learn more about our new faculty members in August, but we can share
that we are very excited about the training, experience and positive energy they will to bring to our school.

Saying Goodbye……

Dear Hampstead Hill Academy,

Thank you for being such a significant source of our growth as
a family during these last five years. We are, and will always
be appreciative of our time spent here. There’s no place like
HHA! As we move to Georgia, we will take with us the
memories, the friendships and the awesome staff in our hearts.
We will miss you very much!

Love,
Aerin, Paul, Kendall, Jennifer, and Algernon Prioleau

THE FUN WE HAD IN MAY AT HHA

May was a very exciting month at HHA. Middle school students started off the month enjoying a dance and celebrating the end of the school year.
The following week, families attended and enjoyed going around the world at the Multicultural festival. Later that week, Annie Jr. was performed
by students for attending guests. The final event was Hampstead Hill Night. Although it was just one night this year, it brought the HHA school
community together. Many alumni and families attended this evening of live music, food and fun! Look for pictures of all of these events to be
posted on the HHA website in the next coming weeks.

THE AMAZING MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL AT HHA!

The multicultural festival was a wonderful celebration of the diversity and inclusion of our community! Families were able to sample foods and do
crafts from five different continents, and watch performances from several different cultures including the lion dance from Asia! Some of the
highlights were the performance of the HHA Cheerleaders, Danza Alegria and the Amazing Lion Dance!! Thank you to everyone who helped to
make this a success!

To all the parents, students, and staff who made this event a reality, this would not have happened without you. Special thanks to the organizing
committee, to the parents who donated food, to those who took the time to prepare the materials for the crafts tables and to all the volunteers.
Volunteers like you genuinely change the world, and we are forever grateful. We hope you will join us next year!!. We’d love to see you!”

students will preview some key concepts of 7th grade math. Have a wonderful summer!

Science – Ms. Poole: The end of the school year is always bitter sweet, but especially this year. Ms. Poole has enjoyed getting to know all of her
students and seeing how much they’ve grown (physically, socially, and academically), but saying goodbye is the hardest part, as they’ve grown to
become a family. She is very proud of the 6th grade students this year for adjusting to all of the changes and unexpected activities. They have
worked hard and continued learning, despite facing challenges. This year, students focused on four main topics; light, odor, ecosystems and
erosion. They are now experts and should be able to thoroughly answer and explain; Can I believe my eyes? How can I smell things from a distance?
Where have all the creatures gone? and How does water shape our world? Their newfound knowledge should help them in future science classes,
but more so, it should help them understand what’s going on in the world around them. Ms. Poole hopes everyone has a wonderful summer and is
able to have some quality family time!

worked hard and persevered through many challenges this year. As the school year winds down, students are also coming to the end of The House

on Latinx culture and identity, gender roles, poverty, racism and otherness.

Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 – Mr. Pratta: Students will finish the year with a financial literacy project designed to promote awareness with real-world
skills like budgeting and saving and borrowing money responsibly. Students have worked incredibly hard on their math skills this year and are ready
to succeed at the highest level in high school!

History – Ms. Kosmer: Students have finished their Civil War Battle projects. They presented their websites to their classmates, and each group
was able to share the glows and grows of everyone's projects. They gave each other great feedback for future presentations. Students also
completed the U.S. History MCAP.

LEADERS GO PLACES

Leaders Go Places motivates students to reach rigorous academic goals. By now,
you all know the standards. Reaching level is not easy. Each quarter, around 75%
of our students did just that.

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) at HHA looks at student data
to determine if all of our students are achieving at the same level. Equity is always
a work in progress, but we would hope students from all backgrounds can achieve
academic success. LGP is the measure we use in the middle school. Here is how we
did:

LGP Breakdown by Race Hispanic Student Population LGP Percentage
African American 43% 44%
While we are far from perfect, when we break down the students White 20% 18%
who made level in the middle school, the racial percentages 32% 33%
mirror that of the student population. That has to be the goal,
and in this case, we achieve it. We will constantly work to be
more inclusive and to ensure all students feel valued. The work is
never done. We would like to celebrate this success, and all the
students and staff that believe equity matters.

On Monday, June 13th, students in grades 5 – 7 will take part in Step-
Up Day. On this day, students will visit their upcoming grade level.
They will also have their name moved to that grade level in Google
Classroom. Students will then check Google Classroom for their
summer reading assignment.

NATURE EXPLORATION

The Nature Exploration classes have been very busy exploring and learning about the different
ecosystems found on our school campus and in the park. The youngest Nature Scientists have
spent a lot of time in the school garden, planting, tasting, and harvesting many of the
vegetables and flowers growing there. They have also been learning about how energy is
transferred in ecosystems through a series of games and by creating models of food chains.
Grade 5 students finished a unit by dissecting owl pellets to discover how many and what
types of rodents Barn Owls consume in a day. Middle school students spent most of their time
at the Patterson Park Pond, collecting water samples, minors, frogs, turtles and fishing. One
student caught a largemouth bass during this unit. Enjoy looking at all of the beautiful pictures
that show how nature is being shared with HHA students.
There are many wonderful ways to take the whole family outside to explore nature during the
summer. Take advantage of the many parks and nature centers located all over Baltimore City
and County. All the nature centers have websites that list the many free activities available.

THE MANY ADVENTURES TAKING PLACE IN OUR OWN BACKYARD DURING
NATURE EXPLORATION CLASS!

ART

Ms. Butcher: So many exciting things happened in the art room this year. Ms. Butcher can’t wait to see what next year brings with all of the
talented HHA students. Grade 7 and 8 students finished the year with a Mexican folk art unit and created beautiful bronze etchings of their folk art
images pictured below.

13

GIFTED AND ADVANCED LEARNING PROGRAM

Ms. Guitian and Ms. Gonzalez: The creativity never stops in gifted and advanced
learning! During the last few weeks of school, some 3rd grade students had the opportunity
to design their own numeration systems after exploring the Egyptian and Chinese systems,
and some 4th grade students applied new knowledge of triangles and quadrilaterals to
design flags. Also, some 2nd grade students used three dimensional tangrams to design
equipment for a scale playground model.

In early May, the special book clubs hosted by our friends at the JHU Center for Talented
Youth concluded with overwhelming praise from the students. The learning was so much fun
that students just had to continue the work they started! As a result, 1st and 2nd grade
students revised and illustrated their group fairytales, and 3rd and 4th grade students added
to their original fantasy stories, many of them creating maps of the worlds they invented.
Ask your students to share their work with you. Also, any books your student brings home
are theirs to keep; compliments of JHU/ CTY. Some students have opted to keep their books
at school for use next year. Please let Ms. Guitian know if you have any questions.

ESOL DEPARTMENT NEWS Yaneli Z. presents her passion project

Ms. Ziemba, Ms. Brezenoff, Ms. Hicks, Ms. Hyatt, and Mr. LaBarr: In PreK, students are learning new vocabulary using pictures and sentence
frames, and in kindergarten, they are using popsicles sticks to practice how to build sentences and how to write new vocabulary words!

First grade students are learning about animals and how they make their nests and lay eggs. They are also completing a graphic organizer writing
how a turtle, duck and frog lay their eggs using the words "first', "next' and "last". Spring is the perfect time of the year to learn about nests.
Second grade students are learning all about how animals protect themselves, and are learning about predators and prey. Ask your child, about the
words predator and prey.

The ESOL team is in the midst of testing students to measure progress since the beginning of the school year. Even with all the other testing,
students are demonstrating their strength, stamina and skills. The teachers are very proud of their effort and progress, and hope the students are
too!

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Ms. Shaffer: It’s summer vacation, and your child is probably happy to spend
his/her days lounging and recuperating from the hectic school year. Summer
regression is the loss of academic knowledge gained throughout the school
year. Learning loss or the ‘summer slide’ among students over summer break
is a very real problem that we see often. Here are several ways for parents to
help minimize summer regression:

• read daily
• write often
• plan educational visits
• set aside daily learning time
• enroll in a summer learning program and visit the library

CLUB/ACTIVITIES NEWS

HHA DEBATE CLUB

The Hampstead Hill Academy Elementary Debate team had a very fun and successful
championship. Camden Anderson and Jaden Adarkwah - Yiadom competed in their first-ever
in-person public forum debate competition. In the original oratory category, 4th grade student
Quinn Schiffer placed in 5th place, and 4th grade student Jaden Adarkwah-Yiadom placed in 3rd!
Last but not least, 5th grade student Bria Shah placed 1st in this year’s original oratory
competition! Congratulations to the Hampstead Hill debaters for an amazing season. See you
next year!

CHESS NEWS

Spencer and Cameron Cappolla just returned from Columbus, Ohio where they competed in
the K-6 National Elementary Chess Championships 2022. Over 1,000 of the best elementary
school chess players from all states participated in this championship. Spencer and Cameron
were among 8 kids representing Maryland. Cameron was the only kindergarten from
Maryland and Spencer was the only 4th grade student. They were the only kids from
Baltimore! It was an epic event, and they had to play 7 games over a period of 3 days with
each game lasting almost 3 hours! They both did great climbing to the top of the charts in
their divisions bringing home medals and trophies. Congratulations to Spencer and Cameron
on their hard work and great performance!

What a great showing HHA players had at the Elementary Citywide Tournament. The HHA Congratulations to Camden and Jaden for
team brought home the co-team runner up champions with 9.5 points! The players are all taking part in debate
very proud of themselves. Everyone was highly impressed with how they represented
themselves, the team and the school. They have been getting ready for this tournament all
year attending the chess club weekly and studying the art of chess. Well done!

This strong team included three individual champions in their sections: Spencer Cappolla, Quinn McCartney, and Marvin Glund-Hampton. Other
members of the team included Cameron Cappolla, Archer Daniels and Jack Teresi. Spencer was undefeated and was pronounced a Citywide
Champion in the advanced division. Marvin won 1st place in the 1 - 2 grade division, and Quinn won the 1st place in the novice 5th grade division.
Archer, Jack and Cameron delivered an additional 4 winning games, and our school claimed 2nd place victory in Baltimore! HHA will continue to
have a strong team next year under the guidance of Chess Master Mr. Dennis Norman. Additionally, Penelope Cuellar went up against the best
middle school chess players from across the city. She played well and took home an individual championship trophy!

RECYCLING

Written by: Kelli Free, Ellia Parr and Malak Joda

The Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 5394 saw a problem
with the recycling system at HHA and set out to make
a difference by sending a letter to Council Member
Zeke Cohen. When Council Member Cohen received
the letter, he sent it to the head of Department of
Public Works and Brandon Scott, the mayor of
Baltimore. When the Girl Scouts met with Council
Member Cohen on May 10th, he delivered the news
that recycling had been restored for all of the
Baltimore City Schools. Everyone is super exited to
have recycling back at school. So now that the
recycling is back, our school will be better for the
environment and everyone. Any school in city schools
can have their recycling picked up by placing a call to 311,
and DPW will schedule a truck to come pick it up.

The Girl Scout Juniors are also raising awareness about Animal
Adoption in partnership with BARCS - Baltimore Animal Rescue &
Care Shelter. Next time you are looking to get a pet, consider
going to BARCS or another shelter to adopt one. They have more
than just cats and dogs. If you own a pet, be sure to get it spayed
or neutered. This has many benefits to their health including
reducing their chance of getting cancer, and it helps keep the
animal population down, so the shelters do not get overcrowded.
Check out the BARCS handout at the end of the magazine.

The MGP program will begin Tuesday June 21st and go through Friday July 22nd. Please note that camp will be closed on Monday, July 4th .

The program starts at 9 am and ends at 3 pm. An optional breakfast will be available 8:30 – 9 am. Lunch will be provided for students, but students
can also bring their own lunch if they want.

Attendance throughout the program is extremely important. Students should be in attendance each day. Family outings, and appointments may
occur, but please consider scheduling around the program whenever you can so that your student may get the full potential of the program. Please
email Mr. White with any questions at [email protected]

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

HHA is serious about attendance. Our talented staff cannot teach unless students attend school. There is a district-wide focus on student
attendance. Again this year, there will be mandatory hearings at school headquarters for the parents of students with poor attendance. Each

month, the newsletter will include this chart so students and parents can review attendance averages.

Congratulations to the 8th Grade Team for having the highest attendance average for May.

DYPSKI PARK UPDATE
The renovation of Dypski Park at 1213 S. Ellwood Ave., led by Baltimore Recnparks, is well under way. Here's what neighbors can expect. The
installation of the playground structure and the installation of the protective rubber safety surfacing (includes synthetic turf) and landscape should
be completed in May. Installation of the two park shelters and work for the decorative fountain will continue into June and July. Please understand
this is an estimated schedule of work contingent upon weather and availability /delivery of materials.

Canton Dog Park Update
Friends of Canton Dog Park are pleased to share the Canton Dog Park is receiving much needed updates this month. Baltimore City Rec N Parks has
repaired the water leak on the sidewalk, is filling in the low area of the park that forms a lake when it rains and is promising to replace the broken
water fountains. We believe these repairs will improve the safety, usability, and appearance of the park.
