LOOKING GOOD IN THE
HHA 2020-2021 T-SHIRT

Welcome to Hampstead Hill Academy!

Note from Principal Hornbeck

We are about to embark on an exciting adventure together. After more than a year, I Principal
simply can’t wait to see HHA’s teachers and students together again. There will most Matt Hornbeck
definitely be strategies and procedures in place for us all to stay safe (see “Safety Details”
in this edition on page 3), but there will be great joy and social emotional connections
happening as well. We know from in-person programming last summer and our current in-
person student learning center for grade 5 – 8 students, that everyone has missed the
opportunity to get out of their home and spend time with their peers, friends and teachers.
It is important that our students attending in-person follow the safety protocols in place,
and enjoy learning in person and just being together in school. March 15th marks the
beginning of our path back to normalcy. I couldn’t be more excited to see many of you on
the greentop and welcome the first wave of HHA students back to school!

RETURN TO SCHOOL SAFETY DETAILS AND MORE

On March 15th, we will welcome back about 130 kindergarten through 2nd grade Welcome Back!
students for in-person learning. A similar number of grade 3-5 students will
return April 12th. We are so excited to safely bring this many students back to
school. More than 70% of HHA’s K-5 families are choosing to return to in-person
instruction in the coming weeks. Some homerooms will have as much as 90% of
students learning in-person. In-person and at-home schedules are being
finalized and will be sent out shortly. In terms of safety protocols, there are two
HEPA filters in each typically sized classroom as well as a MERV13 air filter in
the HVAC unit in each classroom. These filters will scrub the air for the common
cold, regular flu, COVID and other contagious diseases more than six times an
hour. All staff have access to KN95 masks, and we have disposable, non-woven,
high quality masks for any student who forgets to bring a mask to school. We
take the proper wearing of close-fitting masks very seriously. Temperature
checks will be taken, and wellness questions will be asked each morning.

A special Powerpoint presentation covering the district’s in-person asymptomatic testing program is posted on our website at www.hha47.org.
Every student participating in-person instruction will be tested for coronavirus once a week. Staff will also be tested. Parent consent forms detailing
school and parent responsibilities will be sent out this week. We are pleased to report that we expect more than 85% of our staff to be fully
vaccinated and be at least two weeks out from receiving their second shot by the time March 15th rolls around. The district will announce their plan
for offering in-person options for middle school in early March. These plans will be implemented as quickly as health and safety allow. Our goal is to
have a safe experience for everyone and for students to enjoy learning in-person. An important reminder, please do not to let your guard down.
Always wear a mask and socially distance whenever you are out and about. Your efforts to keep yourself and everyone you interact with safe will
help us bring more students back to in-person schooling and make it more likely that the summer and fall will be more normal for everyone.

If your child is returning to school, look for two very important emails to be sent to you. One
will be regarding the Parent/Guardian Consent Form for In-Person School and COVID-19

Awareness Agreement and the other regarding your emergency contact information. These
forms must be completed and returned to HHA for your child to attend school.

Ms. Bierley, Ms. Satterlee, and Ms. Clary, Ms. Tucker, Ms. Billups and Ms. Douglas and Ms. LeFever: March will be an exciting time for students!
After a long year, many students will return to the school building for in-person instruction. As a reminder, students are to come with a properly
fitted mask each day and arrive and depart for their AM or PM section on time. To prepare, it may be a good idea to have students practice
wearing their masks for longer periods of time to get acclimated to this new normal. More information about expectations will be sent home
shortly. Students will also take a virtual field trip to the Maryland Zoo. Look for information regarding the trip to be sent out. Teachers will continue
to use Google Classroom to assign and score work. Be sure to check Google Classroom and Bloomz for announcements and reminders each day.
Additionally, an adjusted schedule for the week of March 8th will be sent out. Teachers will need additional time to prepare their classrooms for in-
person instruction.

examine different types of figurative language within new stories and in poetry. Students will explore texts such
as The Necklace, A White Heron, and Written in March. They will continue to develop reading comprehension by
answering questions pertaining to story details, character traits and thinking beyond the text. The Owls have
finished their novel study, Walk Two Moons. At the conclusion of the novel, they will begin their next portfolio
project. They will construct a literary essay in response to the novel explaining how the characters contribute to
the theme. Keep up the great work!

Language/Science – Ms. Ruppenthal: Students have been identifying parts of speech. They have been

identifying singular and plural nouns and have been explaining inaccurate and misleading claims by analyzing
graphs, charts and maps. When they have finished, they will be tested on this information. In science, students

will complete Unit 2, the Earth and Sun. The final part of the unit will cover the methods of transferring heat as
well as parts of the water cycle. Once this unit is completed, students will learn about mixtures and solutions.
They will plan and conduct saturation investigations, and will separate mixtures using tools like magnets,

funnels, screens, etc. Students will compare the solubility of substances in water, identify an unknown
substance based on the properties of solubility and crystal form and observe and compare reactants and

products of several chemical reactions.

Looking good in the Math – Ms. O’Connor: Students will continue to learn how to create equivalent fractions using a lot of different
HHA 2020-2021 T-Shirt strategies. They have applied these strategies to adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. They

have also been practiced simplifying fractions and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Next, students will learn how to

multiply and divide fractions. Keep up the great job with these challenging topics!

GRADE 6

Humanities/Social Studies – Mr. Farber: Students recently began Bronx Masquerade, the third novel of the
year. Like the other books, it will mainly be read independently. Additionally, students recently completed a
literary response writing assignment on Walk Two Moons or Romeo and Juliet. In social studies, students
have begun to study civilizations in Ancient Egypt, and they have been learning about historically significant
African Americans for Black History Month.

Math – Ms. Kleine: Students will explore integers and rational numbers. They will complete a Timeline

own website to demonstrate their knowledge. They will present to judges and a few groups and will
go to the Baltimore City competition.

GRADE 8 Looking good in the
HHA 2020-2021 T-Shirt

Language Arts – Mr. Ball: All students have begun exploring and analyzing various Native American

folktales. The folktales provide excellent windows into the dynamic cultures of the sovereign Native American nations who live on the land that the

United States now encompasses. These tales provide excellent opportunities to practice the important literary analysis skills that students will need

to be successful in college and career. While reading these fascinating folktales, students will focus on improving their ability to write clearly,

concisely and persuasively.

Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 – Ms. Luthers Bradford: Pre-Algebra: Students are working actively on understanding slope and ways to graph lines.
Students will soon begin to solve systems of equations. In the next two weeks, ask your student, "What are the three methods you can use to solve
systems of equations?"

Algebra 1: Students continue to work on slope from various perspectives. They will apply their understanding of slope skills to real world scenarios
and extend their linear equation understanding to other key concepts.

History Science– Mr. Lohrman: Students are finishing the CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) essay answering the question, "How does food provide
my body with energy?" They will begin the next unit which is on earth science, answering the question, "What makes the weather change?"

LEADERS GO PLACES

Leaders Go Places motivates students to reach rigorous
academic goals. Even in this virtual setting, our students’
combined average GPA was above a 3.0, but LGP is about more
than grades. What makes LGP truly special is the motivation it
provides students to be citizens beyond the classroom. It is
important to get good grades, and it is equally important to give
back to your community.

This year, students are
completing individual projects
in place of community service. Projects can include reading and responding to articles about current events,
recording announcements for Black History Month or making cards for soldiers around the world using the
Operation Gratitude website. HHA staff find activities for students to complete, but sometimes, students find
opportunities on their own.

Two students, 6th grade student Zoe Wahl and 8th grade student Brenda Castro-Quintanilla found an opportunity
at St. Jude Children's Hospital. Using a link, anyone could create a Valentine’s Day card for children in the
hospital. Zoe and Brenda not only found and completed the activity which supports kids who may need
encouragement, but both emailed HHA staff to share the opportunity with the entire middle school. Both young
ladies sought out an opportunity to serve and then worked to get others involved. HHA students created over 50
cards to share, making Valentine’s Day a little brighter for those in need. This is an example of true leadership
and what it means to contribute to the common good.

NATURE EXPLORATION Looking good in the
HHA 2020-2021 T-Shirt
Ms. Riorda: The mantra for the Nature Exploration class is “Stay Curious!” At a time when most of
our discoveries are taking place virtually, it can be challenging to stay focused on the amazing world
around us. We are attempting to foster that curiosity and a desire for learning, by exposing students
to many of the marvels we can find in nature. Our youngest students are learning about a new animal
each week whose common name begins with the letter of the week. For example, students have
recently learned about the Vervet Monkey and Penguins (only Emperor Penguins). Elementary
students continue to learn about animal adaptations. The world is full of very diverse biomes and to
discover how animals have adapted for survival in these extreme environments has been an amazing
adventure. Students have journeyed to the African Savannah, visited the Northern Canadian Arctic
and have even traveled to the continent of Australia to learn about the animals and their adaptations
for survival. Middle school students are mixing a bit of chemistry into their environmental studies as
they investigate the cycle of the chemical element Carbon. Carbon is the duct tape of life, but the
cycle is out of balance and is causing our world’s climate to change. Students are investigating the
latest scientific theories about the root causes of climate change and the effects of warmer
temperatures on our planet.

8

ART HHA Student Art Work

Ms. Butcher: Ms. Butcher is proud of all of the talented artists at HHA. Students are working from home and
creating beautiful works of art. Kindergarten students have learned about the artist Canaletto and created
gondola paintings. Students in grades 1 and 3 learned about the artist Giuseppe Arcimbdo, and created
portraits made out of nature, fruits and vegetables. Middle school students learned about the artists Andy
Warhol and Renee Marguerite and created Pop art and surrealism pictures.

ENRICHMENT NEWS

Spring is in the air… or is it? Despite the slushy snow days, Enrichment students have been involved in
numerous activities. Students in grade kindergarten - 2 have been reading books about famous African
Americans. They also designed a charm bracelet in honor of Rosa Parks. Grade 3 and 4 students are busy
learning advanced math using the M3 math units: Awesome Algebra (grade 4) and Factors, Multiples and
Leftovers (Grade 3). Everyone is rising to the challenge of learning new material through a variety of
interesting technical applications such as Pear Deck, Flipgrid and Jamboard. March will find enrichment
students planning creative projects based on their interests. Look for more information in your child’s
enrichment Google Classroom. For younger students, guidelines and resources will be posted on the PreK -
2 enrichment Google Classrooms, so they too can have an opportunity to pursue their interests and create
their own projects to share. Please reach out to Ms. Guitian at [email protected] with any questions!

SPECIAL EDUCATION

GET LIT CANTON FROM THE CANTON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Have you noticed an increase in café lights strung throughout the
neighborhood? Beautiful, right? Well, they’re not just there to be pretty,
but to also supplement the streetlights to increase safety as part of an
initiative launched by the CCA called “Get Lit Canton.” The CCA Public
Safety Committee believes one of the biggest deterrents of nighttime
theft is a well-lit community. So, we are encouraging neighbors to “Get
