from the superintendent

As the 8th Superintendent in our 74-year history, I am honored to
serve Seattle Christian School in this next chapter. During my past
two years here as Elementary Principal, I quickly felt at home and
all-in for our mission and our community. As we raise the next
generation of young people amidst a challenging season in
our nation and world, we must operate from a place
of trust in the Lord. He is a good and loving God,
and He calls for His people to stand in unity,
to see others as He sees us, and to love one
another.
Over the past 20+ years in education and
ministry, I have been blessed to learn and serve
in public and private schools, both domestic and
abroad. God is clearly at work in school settings all
over the world, and I am so thankful for how God He
has grown me and shown me grace through all of the moments that
make up my story. What a privilege it is to bring glory to Him in the
lane of education and to now do so in the vibrant, diverse, and Jesus-
centered community that is Seattle Christian. On behalf of my wife,
Melia, and our children, we are grateful to be a part of the Seattle
Christian community.
Each of us has our own story, and at SCS, as those unique stories
come together, we get to experience God’s power and faithfulness in
new ways, while building upon all of the stories that came before us.
As I consider our mission to “impact” the world this next season, a
few key thoughts come to mind.
We want to be a learning culture, where every workspace is a
learning space, where we are genuinely curious about one another’s
wiring and perspectives, where learning is tailored to each student’s
gifts and needs, and where we serve with a learning posture toward
each other and the Lord. We want to invest well in developing heart
and skill in our students, equipping them to be rooted in faith
and character, while also gaining proficiency in the skills to live
rewarding and purpose-filled lives. We want to stay in step with
God’s Spirit, being courageous and prayerful to be in sync with the
Lord as we navigate opportunities, challenges, and decisions together
(Galatians 5:25).
As we look to the fall, it is our intent to be in-person with all students
learning on campus all day, every day. We are committed to moving
forward, honoring health and safety protocols, and living into God’s
purpose for our lives.
May we continue to become a learning culture that stays in step with
the Spirit and develops the hearts and skills of our students.

For the first time at SCS, a Cartooning class was offered through World . . .
Middle School Explorations. Over six weeks during Remote From HOME!
Learning, students created a set of characters in their own
illustration style and used these characters to tell a story in comic
book format. Secondary Art teacher Kelly Cook shares, “The
students worked so hard on these to create this single product and
it really paid off! Seeing all the finished work really knocked my
socks off! Great work cartooning!”
Art students also created a series of paintings based on a limited
color palette and a “northwest” theme.
Students chose to spruce up the blank slate and empty walls of
the school bathrooms to hang their art. The day scheduled for
installation was the same day Remote Learning began. We look
forward to our students seeing their art displays when we return
to school!

One of the highlights of Mr. Peters’ sixth grade social studies Page 9
class is the country report. During second semester, students
select a country in the eastern hemisphere for an extensive
project that involves writing a research paper, making a
display board and building a model. This year, students faced
the additional challenge of completing the project remotely.
Through daily Zoom sessions, Mr. Peters provided instructional
content, clarified requirements, answered student questions and
facilitated discussion that led to successful completion of the

While students and families were not able to attend the annual
Country Fair, photos of display boards and models were assembled
in PowerPoint. Students were able to present their projects over

Unity and in a fun way and showcase the SCS spirit.”
Showcases Creating an all-school music video was a lofty endeavor that would require two
Student months of planning, much coordination, and the cooperation of the entire student
Leadership body. Learning film production techniques such as story-boarding, utilizing video
equipment in new ways, and directing hundreds of students were just some of the
skills required to make the All School Music Video a success. Nine brave students

Charisse Aguasin, Abby Young (8th), Olivia Clark (12th), AJ Vander Ley (12th),
Keaton Bannister (12th) lent their talents to lip-synching throughout the video.
Their classmates lined the halls to cheer them on and display the many activities
and extracurriculars offered at SCS.
Senior Olivia Clark shares what the experience meant for her, “Being a big part
of the Lip Dub video for my school was truly an amazing experience. Seattle
Christian is such a great school with so much to offer and I was so excited to be
able to help show that to people in a way that was super creative! The fact that
the whole school was also able to participate in the video made it even more fun
especially with the energy the students brought. I was with a group of my school
friends when I finally got to see the finished video and everybody’s reaction was
amazing. We were so hyped watching the video because it really brought to light
how cool SCS really is !!”
The Lord orchestrated all of the details of the filming, which wrapped just days
before we pivoted to Remote Learning. On May 7, the SCS community gathered
virtually on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram for the live stream premiere of the
video, which now has over 8,000 views! It was just the boost needed to remind
our students that it is our unity in Christ, both together and apart, that makes us

A Legacy of Faithful Service

Janet Laudan Fellow colleagues gathered on June 12 to celebrate the conclusion of our school year and
also honor those who have reached service milestones at SCS. We said a bittersweet
20 Years goodbye to a true and faithful SCS servant, Ms. Janet Laudan, as the Lord calls her into
a new season of life.
Ms. Laudan came to Seattle Christian School in 2000 and finished up her 20th year as
a Warrior. She taught 1st grade for four years at SCS, and has been teaching 3rd grade
for the past 16 years. Prior to her time at SCS, Janet taught for 17 years in the Tukwila
School District. What an impact she has made on countless students, parents, faculty
and staff as she has faithfully served, taught and inspired many.
One of the things so appreciated by elementary leadership is Janet’s learning posture.
As a veteran teacher, she kept a mindset of learning and curiosity. She continued to
grow, to try new things, to take risks, to lead, and to learn every day. Janet will be greatly
missed and has made a positive impact on students and families through the years.
