About Us

The Young Professional Network is a space for enthusiastic, eager and budding
individuals to develop their networking and industry skill sets. We have a very active
Committee that hosts and attends a number of technical events, site visits and social

events throughout the year. The aim is to encourage developing members to;

 Participate in ‘Guild life’ (i.e. Networking, award ceremonies, dinners)
 Attend and/or participate in technical events to support your CPD:

Name: Ashley Voss
Guild Position: Chair of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Quantity Surveyor
Company: Costain
Location: Birmingham

Background:

Ashley is currently undertaking his Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying BSc
(Hons) at the University of Wolverhampton on a part time basis.

Ashley started his career within the sports industry, coaching children through educational,
fitness-fun activities. In this role, he gained a strong sense of leadership, the ability to
communicate to a diverse customer basis in a broad spectrum of situations, and deliver a
high-quality service, especially under pressure.

In 2014, Ashley re-routed his career and entered the construction industry as a Junior
Quantity Surveyor at Rhead Group Ltd; an international professional services company,
whose specialism included commercial, programme management and engineering
consultancy. Throughout this time, he has worked across several projects within the energy
sector, namely some of the largest multimillion pound gas transmission construction projects
in recent years. This has enabled him to gain experience in a single niche area, whilst
undertaking a broad range of tasks with growing responsibilities. In August 2015, Rhead
Group Ltd was acquired by Costain Plc, and in January 2016 was promoted to the role of
Quantity Surveyor as well as MI Lead for the Defence Business Unit within the Power sector.

Interests within work:

Ashley’s main interests lie within financial forecasting and process innovation. Through his
exposure to multiple commissions within the industry, Ashley has been able to input his
experience from one project to another to positive and effective use.

Interests outside of work:

Away from the day job, Ashley still likes to engage with his sporty side actively following
cricket, golf, NFL, snooker, as well as still playing rugby union for his local childhood club.

Name: Nicole Jackson
Guild Position: Deputy Chair of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Technical Officer
Company: Cadent Gas
Location: East Midlands

Background:

Nicole attended Loughborough University to study Systems Engineering and graduated in
2014 with a Masters in Engineering and Diploma in Industrial Studies for a placement
undertaken at National Grid Gas Distribution. Nicole has worked in BAE Systems and also
the RAF prior to completing her degree and since graduation joined National Grid in Gas
Distribution for the 18-month graduate scheme and later appointed into a full position in the
East Midlands as a Technical Officer.

The gas distribution company in 2017 rebranded to Cadent Gas and since then, Nicole has
been working on her technical competency to work towards acting as a standby manager
and progression within the business. Nicole has been working towards her Chartered
Engineer status with both the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) and Institute
of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Interests within work:

Nicole works in a business dealing with pipes and pipelines daily and is keenly learning
repair techniques and interested in innovations for repairs on in service equipment.

Interests outside of work:

Previous to this role, Nicole was the Treasurer for the YPN, and her hobbies include
climbing, travelling and motorsport.

Name: Tristan Pulford
Guild Position: 2nd Deputy Chair of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Senior Consultant

Background:

Tristan is a chartered Mechanical Engineering working in the Oil & Gas, Theme Park and
Manufacturing industries.

Tristan started his career as a graduate Engineer at DNV GL (formally GL Noble Denton)
working mainly on onshore gas sites, spending his time working between Pressure Systems,
Verification and DSEAR related areas. During his time, he gained a lot of experience in
COMAH, PSSR and ATEX, working on a variety of sites completing audits on both people
and processes.

In 2015, Tristan joined Finch Consulting to drive forward their Energy sector while also
increasing his expertise to include verification and auditing of roller coasters and work within
the manufacturing sector. Tristan has continued to build on his verification work in the oil &
gas sector, while applying his DSEAR expertise across a wide range of sectors. Additionally,
he has started to apply some of the more advanced oil and gas techniques to other
industries such as RCM and other Asset Management related skills.

Interests within work:

Tristan’s main interests lie within creating a strategy and driving the energy sector, while
simultaneously using his oil and gas knowledge to provide insight and advances in other
sectors.

Interests outside of work:

Tristan keeps active outside of work through climbing, hiking, swimming and football. Playing
for his local team in the North Leicestershire Premier Division.

Name: Jenny Salt
Guild Position: Events & Socials Organiser of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Associate Planner
Company: Fisher German
Location: Ashby de la Zouch/West Midlands

Background:

Jenny studied at the University of Sheffield and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Geography
and Planning, followed by a MA in Town and Regional Planning.

Jenny started her career as a graduate planner at Fisher German; a leading UK firm of rural
estate agents, property consultants, chartered surveyors and chartered town planners. In
this role, she has gained a broad range of experience from leading and supporting on a wide
variety of projects. She has benefited from a portfolio of planning applications and appeals,
site appraisals and development plan promotion for wide range of clients.

She was elected a full member of the Royal Town Planning Institute in January 2013 and
was subsequently promoted to a new role with Fisher German as a chartered planner. In
2016 Jenny progressed further through the team to become an Associate. A year later Jenny
received the ‘Highly Commended’ award for Young Planner at the East Midlands Planning
Awards.

Interests within work:

Jenny maintains a broad portfolio of projects in a variety of sectors but her particular areas of
interest lie in utilities and infrastructure, and conversely agricultural and rural planning. She
is part of the team providing planning support to Severn Trent Water for their western region
as well as providing planning support to clients in the rural sector.

Interests outside of work:

Outside of work, Jenny enjoys playing badminton and running, as well as travelling to new
places and visiting friends across the length and breadth of the country.

Name: Tom Evans
Guild Position: Secretary of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Project Engineer
Company: Costain
Location: Midlands/Wales and West

Background:

Tom attended Newcastle and Nottingham University graduating in 2012 and 2014 after
studying Chemical Engineering.

He has worked for Costain Integrated Services (CIS) since he was 18 and has worked all
around England and Wales. He is currently working within Capital Delivery for National Grid
on several Compressor Station projects, initially working in Manchester and later on moving
onto several other projects based in: Peterborough, Huntingdon, Aylesbury, Diss,
Churchover, Wormington and Felindre.

Interests within work:

Tom is currently working towards his Engineering chartership for the Institute of Chemical
Engineering (IChemE) and Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM).

Interests outside of work:

This is Tom’s first year on the Young Professionals Network Committee. In 2015, Tom won
the Midlands Sir John Parker paper competition with a presentation on ‘Pipeline Decay Time’
as well as finishing runner up in the national final held in London.

Name: Mark John Daniel Lee
Guild Position: Past Chair of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Senior Cost Manager
Company: Turner & Townsend
Location: Birmingham

Background:

Mark completed a Business Management degree in 2010, and due to a contact in the
industry stumbled across Quantity Surveying. To date, this has led to a seven year career in
construction which has included working for numerous clients including; National Grid,
Severn Trent Water, Network Rail and the Environment Agency.

Throughout this period, Mark has been significantly supported by both his previous employer
Rhead Group (Now Costain) and his current employer (Turner & Townsend), to achieve both
an MSc in Quantity Surveying and membership of the RICS.

Mark is currently the Regional Framework Manager for the Environment Agency West
Region, and oversees a circa. £1m commission with 10 members of staff based across the
midlands patch. This opportunity has provided him with extensive commission management
experience, including the importance of client and consultant relationships. Mark is also
seconded 4 days a week into the Environment Agency, providing commercial support to the
delivery teams, including advice on how to administer the NEC contract and the
development of project benchmarks. Aside from these duties, Mark is also the lead in region
for apprentice and graduate rotation and the RICS chartership programme.

Mark was the 2016/17 Chair of the Midlands Young Professionals Network and passed over
his duties to Ashley Voss for the 2017/18 period.

Interests within work:

Mark enjoys developing the less experienced members of the team, notably apprentices and
graduates. This includes identifying appropriate educational courses (both a-levels and
degrees) and ensuring there is adequate rotation within the business to encourage the
achievement of long term learning and development plans.

Interests outside of work:

Away from work, Mark is a big football fan and a season ticket holder at Birmingham City
Football Club.

Name: Rachel Hassall
Guild Position: Committee Member of the Midlands Young Professionals Network
Job Title: Asset Integrity Management Consultant / Global Technical Trainee
Company: DNV GL
Location: Loughborough / The Netherlands / Norway / Australia

Background:

Rachel’s day job is in Loughborough as an Asset Integrity Management Consultant, however
is currently on secondment as a Global Technical Trainee in three global locations to gain a
deeper understanding of energy consultancy as a whole.

Rachel read Mathematics and Physics at The University of St Andrews and graduated in
2014 with BSc (joint honours) in the subject. She then enrolled in DNV GL’s graduate
development scheme in September 2014, and joined the Asset Integrity Management team
under Software Consulting on a permanent basis as a consultant. As part of this team
Rachel worked on HAAS, an innovation project for National Grid under the RIIO framework
to automate pipeline aerial surveillance with sensors and image processing. She won the
Midlands Sir John Parker Paper competition presenting on this subject, and went on to win
the PIG National Young Persons Paper Competition using a game of “spot the difference” to
give a 5-minute pitch on the project. The project continued to a second stage which involved
Rachel organising and reporting on trials on-site in Brazil and Scotland. Following the
completion of HAAS in March 2016, Rachel focussed on her team’s core work, working with
Synergi Pipeline, DNV GL’s commercial Pipeline Integrity Management Software (PIMS).
She has implemented various risk models and analysis in Synergi Pipeline, most recently
completing work on an innovate plastic pipe replacement risk model for an Australian client.

Rachel is now on a global competency scheme, where she spends 6 months in three
locations to grain a broader view of the business and enable knowledge exchange. Firstly,
Arnhem, The Netherlands, to work within R&D for power electronics and learn more about
innovations in the electricity industry. Then moving to DNV GL HQ in Oslo, Norway to hone
her data analytics working with the data science team, before heading to Perth, Australia to
work further with the Oil & Gas industry.

Interests within work:

Rachel enjoys working on innovation projects with clients where she can apply analytics to
solve problems and create new processes. She also enjoys opportunities to convey
technical concepts in a simple and compelling way to the industry.

Interests outside of work:

Rachel likes to be active, playing football and squash on a regular basis. She also enjoys
travel, exploring the countryside, eating and visiting friends and family.
