25

Learning goals
After completing this lesson, students will be able to :

▪ Read and write 11 – 20 in numerals and words.
▪ Use tens and ones to show numbers to 20.
▪ Count and compare numbers.

Table of contents :
1. Numbers to 20
2. Place value
3. Comparing
4. Add & subtract

30

Read the short conversation below!

For your information :
If you want to determine the place value of a number, start with
the last number.

34

Comparing Numbers

When we compare two numbers, we are deciding if a number is
greter than, smaller than or equal to the other number.
For example :

❖ 4 is greater than 3
❖ 16 is smaller than 19
❖ 12 is equal to 12
Lets use some objects to represent the number so it’s easy to
compare them.
Let’s put 3 scoops of ice cream on one cone and 2 scoops of ice
cream on another cone.

Now, we can see 3 is greater than 2 and is smaller than 3.

35

Let’s take a look at the math symbols we use to compare numbers.
They are :

If we want to compare 15 and 12, it would look like this :

15 > 12

or

12 < 15

If we are comparing two equal numbers, it would look like this:

15 = 15

36

Exercise!

Circle the bigger numbers!

38

Addition and Subtraction

Do you still remember abpout 3 symbols below?

→ Plus
→ Minus

→ Equal

Noted :

Addition using (+)

Subtraction using (-)

Equal using (=)

39

Look at the example below!

Jane has 4 books, then buys 2 more. How many books does
she have now?

Jane’s books Buy 2 more

Equal

four plus two equals six
or

4+2=6

40

Look at the example below!
Lucy has 8 pencils.
4 pencils are given to Andre.
How many pencils are there altogether?

Given to Andre

Lucy’s pencils

Equal

eight minus four equals four
or

8-4=4

41

Exercise!

Match. Which one is the same ?

14 + 6 . . 6 +7

12 + 3 . . 3 + 14

8 +5 . . 12 + 8

9 +8 . . 10 + 9

15 + 4 . . 7+8

42

Write + or - !

9 7 = 16 19 6 = 3
12 6 = 6 9 10 =19
5 4 = 9 14 10 =4
