About Molly

Molly was a 23-year-old university student when she was murdered in an horrific attack
by her ex-boyfriend. Molly suffered with bulimia for a long period of her adult life. However,
Molly showed us as parents and family, and a lot of other people, how she overcame her
demons. In Molly’s case she chose exercise and the study of nutrition as a means by which
to confront her challenges.

Ultimately, we are not defined by the challenges life throws at us, we are defined by how
we face up to them. Molly confronted her demons head on. She tried to understand them
and worked on a strategy that finally allowed her to be a winner. Inner strength and
self-belief are key to winning battles. You must first believe in yourself, after that, anything
is possible.

Molly could not complete her final year at university but we, as parents, collected a
Diploma on her behalf at Rochester Cathedral. Her grades were with a distinction and, had
she had the chance to finish her degree, in all likelihood, it would have been a first class
honours award.

Molly sought to help fellow-sufferers of eating disorders with her blogs and was a
champion of positivity and self-belief.

Our mission as a charity is to continue Molly’s work and to help people facing the
challenge of an eating disorder. The battle is not forlorn – it can be won. That was Molly’s
mantra and it is one we sincerely hope that everyone who has an eating disorder can take
on board.

Joanne and Doug McLaren (Molly’s Mother and Father)

The Molly McLaren Foundation is a charity set up to help individuals
who face challenges in their lives with eating disorders. Molly was one who
faced these challenges and fronted up to them and was winning the battle
before she was taken from us. It took a long time to get the charity up and
running as the Charity Commision is just one example of under-funded public
departments, but we are there now. We have teamed up with Re-Write
Your Story, another charity, who have expert, high success rate resources
for counselling and early intervention. Our first individual is undergoing
counselling sponsored by TMMF and a second individual has been assessed
and recommended for counselling. Our charity will sponsor this person too.
The individuals in question are referrals from the NHS. We do not judge the
NHS – they do a fantastic job with the resources they have and we are
proud of them. Mental health, in general, is under-funded and eating disorders
are just a sub-division of that particular problem. We are filling a gap that
shouldn’t be there, but it is and we will continue to help.

Thanks for helping.

The Molly McLaren Foundation DJs

Doug McLaren

Doug was a reggae DJ in the early 70s. He is an
aficionado of reggae and ska music and says he has
forgotten more about reggae and ska than most people
know. He used to get pre-release, white-label, vinyl
delivered to him in the UK from the Half Way Tree record
shop in a suburb of Kingston Jamaica.

The Caribbean is a wonderful place and he has had
the privilege of visiting it on recent work projects
unrelated to his earlier DJ career, but he knows deep
down in his heart that this area of the world is dear to
him and the inhabitants of the Caribbean Islands are a
treasure to the world.

He is looking forward to welcoming Skatonics to
Mollyfest and maybe playing a few reggae/ska tunes
as an intro to make them feel at home at The Leather
Bottle. Musical Madness in the form of Skatonics begins
at 8-30PM

Alex Niechoj

Alex is a DJ & producer hailing from Rochester, Kent.
Being self taught and holding down a residency at

Maidstone’s highly rated underground club, The Source,
he has played alongside some huge names in the music
industry. These include Deadmau5, Jamie Jones, Seth
Troxler, Steve Lawler and even Radio 1’s Annie Mac.

Having supported such names, it has seen him play
across different cities in the UK such as London,
Birmingham, Brighton and Derby. His taste in music
stretches from disco and funk all the way through to
house and techno.

Alex loves to read a crowd, whether that is playing
groovy beats to really testing crowds and playing those
thumbing kick drums, he will most definitely get
you dancing!

Matthew Range

A young DJ & Producer from Greenwhich, Matthew
loves to make a crowd move no matter the genre. With
residencies in and around London Matthew knows how
to work a crowd.

Studying at Point Blank music school, Matthew is
working on his own sound. A mixture between house
and disco with deep baselines and catchy vocals.

Matthew and his friends have created a brand named
‘Illusion Nights’ Which fill a gap in the market in creating
a specialised house night in the heart of Bexley. Being
held once a month it is becoming a real integral part of
the nightlife.

The Molly McLaren Foundation Live Acts

Calli Malpas

Born Calli Victoria Malpas on August 1st 1982 into
a loving, yet some might say slightly unconventional
home in North West Kent, Calli clung tightly to an
insatiable appetite for music cultivated by her mother,
Annette and inherited from her father, Bob, whose
natural talent and unrivalled energy for all things music
would be the very foundation uponwhich she would build
her musical career.

Mama T & The O.Gs

Mama T and the OGs are a foot tapping, hand
clapping soul-shaking, jubilaking little band playing
Motown, Stax and Sweet Soul music. With soaring Diva
vocals and slicker than slick musicianship Mama T and
the OGs will never fail to get you on your feet. Bring your
dancing shoes.

Rumblefish

Having played hundreds of gigs, Rumblefish are
professional in both attitude and performance. There's a
reason why a band plays together for 10+ years and has
NEVER not been invited back to any of the numerous
venues they have played at.

All 4 members are highly experienced in playing every
type of venue, from small, intimate nooks,to larger pubs,
clubs, weddings, private functions, corporate events, right
through to large festivals.

The Skatonics

The Skatonics pride themselves on an authentic look
and sound. Sharply dressed in tonic suits, pork pie's and
loafers to match the tight, energetic sets they perform
to loyal followers. At any event, you can expect to hear
most of the hits from the bands of the 2-tone era as
well as some older Trojan ska classics and a few 'others'
the band have given their little ska twist to.
