Humble House New Business Spotlight coffee for the community Hi all! I am Melissa, the Owner/Operator at Humble House. It is such an honor to be able to serve the Golden community and work with some of the most wonderful people! Back tracking a few years… I grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois and attended the University of Illinois where I graduated with a bachelors in Advertising and Marketing. After graduating and working in Chicago in the industry for a while, I had the feeling that I was called to do something different in the world and to make a greater impact. My Aunt Nancy, who started a non-profit working in the mountains of Haiti, invited me on a trip with her to volunteer in the remote community of Despinasse, Haiti. It was then that everything changed. After connecting with some of the kindest people and seeing the extreme poverty they lived in, I finally knew my purpose. I began traveling to Haiti twice a year, putting together fundraisers and overseeing programs to help bring new opportunities to the people of Despinasse. But it never felt like enough. There were so many high priority needs and we were only able to scratch the surface. So, I came up with the idea to start a coffee shop that would donate a portion of profits to my aunt’s organization, Serve With Love Today. In 2017, I picked up my life in Chicago and moved out to Colorado to shake things up and get out of my comfort zone. And from there, everything seemed to fall into place. The opportunity to open Generous Coffee Shop in Tributary Food Hall and test out the concept presented itself. We had so much success in that space that we decided to move into our own shop in the Summer of 2023! With that came a name change, so much growth and some many new opportunities! I am so grateful to be here working alongside some of the most incredible people, to have immense support from friends and family and to have a community that has rallied around us from the get-go! µ me Photos courtesy of Humble House >3<

>8< I n my role as a writer for Golden Magazine, I have the privilege of immersing myself in the diverse stories of our community and transforming them into engaging content. This time around, I was given the delightful task of reviewing a restaurant and it was an experience beyond compare. At Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar, my partner and I were treated to a sumptuous seven-course meal that left us utterly enchanted. It’s safe to say this was one of the finest dining experiences we’ve ever had. Since its establishment in 2009, Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar has been a cherished asset to the Golden community, offering a blend of refined dining experiences. Stepping into the warm and inviting entryway, I was met with a warm welcome from their gracious team. The diversity of patrons was impressive – some were relishing drinks at the bar caught up in a game, while elegantly dressed couples savored exquisite wines from around the globe. Families reveled in delectable dinners on the breezy patio, creating a tapestry of shared moments and distinct pleasures. In the words of General Manager Adrienne LaCrue, “everybody comes here, everybody’s welcome.” This was evident by the lengths that Indulge goes to ensure all customers feel safe and have ample options. I was extremely impressed by Indulge’s allergy menu. Friends of LaCrue designed a special menu via My Menu that allows customers with allergies or dietary restrictions to see what foods are safe and what foods should be avoided. The extensive array of allergy-safe options including gluten-free flatbreads, gnocchi and vegan flatbread is a testament to their dedication, granting peace of mind to diners who often find themselves navigating a non-inclusive culinary landscape. We started dinner with a glass of prosecco and an aperol spritz, both of which were fantastic. The first dish Adrienne brought out was the Ahi Tuna Nachos: crispy wonton chips adorned with sriracha ranch and poblano ranch sauces, crowned with diced Ahi Tuna, guacamole and jalapeño. The crunch of the wonton chips provided a delectable foundation, while the medley of toppings danced harmoniously between sweet and savory notes. Seafood isn’t typically my go-to, and I wouldn’t have chosen this dish myself, but Adrienne’s choice was perfect — one of the most unique and delightful creations I’ve ever tasted. By Julia Foodman Golden Restaurant Review Indulge bistro & wine bar “everybody comes here, everybody’s welcome” The ahi tuna entree served with asparagus, a red quinoa jasmine rice blend and a sweet chili aoili is a tasty treat for fans of fare from the sea.

Delicious desserts, refreshing libations, healthy salads and homemade favorites are offered up daily at Indulge Bistro & Wine Bar in Golden. Photos by Julia Foodman Indulge’s menu features a variety of tasty flatbreads and we tried the Washington Valley. This flatbread featured a soft pear whipped goat cheese, prosciutto and mouth watering white wine soaked figs, all topped with arugula and a drizzle of balsamic. Knowing we had five more courses ahead, I exercised every ounce of self-control to savor this treasure, especially since it was only the second dish. This flatbread was a sweet-tooth’s dream. Next, it was time for the main course. We started off with the Ahi Tuna: a six oz sushi grade tuna steak blackened with sweet thai chili sauce and aioli, served with red quinoa and jasmine rice blend and a seasonal veggie. Like I said, I’m not the biggest seafood fan, but my partner said it was the best cooked and tastiest tuna he’d ever had. And, the presentation was nothing short of perfection. Who doesn’t love a good steak? I’m sure some people don’t… but I’m not one of them. Adrienne presented us with an eight-ounce filet mignon accompanied by mashed potatoes and asparagus. Despite Indulge not being strictly a steakhouse, this dish exuded the caliber of a high-end steakhouse experience. My preference for medium-rare was met with a tender, juicy and flawlessly cooked filet. The mashed potatoes were a velvety indulgence. Simply superb! We were served the White Truffle Chicken Gnocchi. I’ve given a lot of thought into which dish was my favorite because they were all so great, but this was the one. This potato gnocchi was so soft and buttery and the crimini mushrooms added a perfect savory taste and ever-so-slight crunch to balance the gnocchi. The chicken was cooked to perfection and smeared with parmesan, all in a tasty garlic truffle cream sauce. I’m also happy to report it preserved well and made an excellent lunch the next day. The Santorini Greek Salad with Greek dressing and warm pita was a fairly standard salad with romaine, feta, red onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and kalamata olives. Proportions were well done and the vegetables were all perfectly ripe. When dessert arrived, I was grateful for the small pocket of space left in my stomach, as both offerings were divine. We were treated to a Red Velvet Cake adorned with whipped cream and Indulge’s signature Crème Brûlée. The cake boasted five layers, each surpassing the last in creaminess and flavor. As a devoted fan of crème brûlée, I must say Indulge’s rendition was one of the finest I’ve had. The velvety vanilla custard beneath the torched sugar topping, accompanied by whipped cream and berries, was a fitting conclusion to a spectacular meal. I wholeheartedly endorse Indulge, not only because they generously provided sustenance for a week, but because I genuinely believe this restaurant is truly extraordinary. Thank you to Adrienne and the wonderful staff at Indulge for a spectacular evening of culinary perfection. Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar is located in the heart of downtown Golden at 1299 Washington Avenue. They are open Monday-Friday for lunch and dinner from 11 am - close, Saturday and Sunday for brunch from 10 am - 2 pm and for dinner until close. Their popular Happy Hour is from 3-6 pm daily. µ >9<

For Julian Carr, his reputation as one of the biggest air-jumpers in skiing has manifested a lengthy resume in extreme sports, outdoor recreation and even car restoration. From Julian’s perspective, however, his long and complicated journey is easily condensed to a simple truth: “My name is Julian Carr, and I am a human that loves being in the mountains.” Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Julian rose to prominence within the ski industry through record-breaking, death-defying leaps and bounds. Literally: Julian skied off a 210-foot cliff in Engleberg, Switzerland in 2006, front-flipping his way to secure the world’s inverted cliff jump record. The same year, he snagged the World Record Cliff in Competition title after completing a 140-foot front flip at the US Freeskiing Nationals. Julian is also an X-Games Gold Medalist and has been featured in seven Warren Miller films. Julian received the 2021 George Mallory Lifetime Achievement Award, the ‘Photo of the Year’ award from Powder Magazine and the prestigious Sickbird Award on the Freeskiing World Tour, among other recognitions within the ski and outdoors industries. According to Julian, his proudest accolade is more internal. “My proudest accomplishment is being happy and healthy. To me, it’s the barometer for success in life.” Exploring fear Because of his background in pushing the impossible, Julian has an intimate relationship with fear. He doesn’t consider himself an adrenaline junkie; instead, his approach is about being grateful, present and working through his emotions. Julian shares his experiences through regular speaking engagements. In his talks, Julian explores his journey and relationship with fear—how it applies to everyday life and how he’s utilized it to his advantage. His talks connect the dots between themes of flow state, awareness and being present in life. “By dissecting fear,” Julian said, “I’ve been able to achieve moments of connection with myself and my surroundings.” By Savannah Nelson skier embracer of fear of mountains Julian Carr and lover >10< Photo by Gabe Rovick; Wolverine Cirque, Utah

Home in Golden With a longstanding career as a professional skier who jumps off cliffs, it’s no surprise, then, why Julian calls Colorado home. “Mountains, mountains, mountains,” he said. “There are so many mountains. It’s nuts.” Julian is partial to Golden, as the city he and his wife Danielle call home. “Golden is amazing because it has a rich heritage, a sense of community and a sense of style,” he said. “I feel like its growth strategy has been well implemented, with excellent sensitivities to growing correctly.” Golden is also home to one of Julian’s longtime sponsors—he has skied professionally with Icelantic Skis for nine years. “Their skis are indestructible and the best on the market, hands down,” he said. “But beyond that, I admire their unique contributions to the planet, the way they express themselves and the way they’ve poured their efforts into both making great skis and cultivating an incredible community. I’m lucky to be a part of it.” Beyond the slopes While skiing remains a vital part of Julian’s career (followers can continue to get a pulse from his Instagram page, @juliancarr), he’s also expanded into continued on page 13 >11<Photo by Ian Zinner; Arapahoe Basin, Colorado Photo by Oskar Enander; Engelberg, Switzerland

In the outdoors space, Julian is an ambassador for Protect Our Winters (POW) and is a board member of the Conservation Lands Foundation. Both organizations advocate for nature and wildlife protection. As a lover of high-alpine sports, Julian has dipped into the trail running world, too. He founded the Cirque Series in 2017 and now acts as Race Director. Cirque Series is a mountain running race that organizes short but rugged mountain trail runs across pristine landscapes worldwide. It was created to redefine what mountain running is about; each race starts at the base of a world-famous ski resort and follows the ridges, peaks and descent of the landscape before ending in celebration at a festival with live music, food, drink and vendors. Additionally, there’s Blake Broncos, a classic Ford Bronco restoration business created in honor of Julian’s favorite car. Working on these restorations led to Julian recently founding a new company called Dojamat. “We produce retro floormats in the classic car industry,” Julian said. “We’re off to a great start just a year into the project.” Clearly, Julian wears a lot of hats. In terms of juggling, he credits building and growing over time. “It’s been a slow expansion of productivity ability,” he said. “It’s the same thing with how you expand a comfort zone slowly over time; I’ve been able to slowly expand my ability to be productive.” Balance is key Julian’s key to success lies in embracing and respecting the line between work and play. “It’s about finding the balance between productivity and ‘me’ time.” In his time off, Julian enjoys hiking, skiing (for recreation, not record-breaking), relaxing and exploring with his wife and their two dogs, Millie and Ragnar. “My lovely wife Danielle loves the mountains as much as me,” he said. “I can’t keep up with her!” As for a love of place and home, Julian credits the community as one-of-a-kind. “Stay cool! Golden is one of the raddest mountain towns in the world, unique people are the key ingredient.” µ

Project ML-Gratitude held its 4th Annual Veteran Memorial Ride hosted by Mark Lockman on August 26, 2023. This year’s event was held at Wheelz Bar and Grille in Englewood, CO. The event was created to support PTSD Veterans by collecting donated motorcycles, refurbishing them, and presenting them to Veterans, free of charge. 140+ bike riders attended this year’s event. Every year our event gets larger! We were able to give 2 Veterans motorcycles at this event which brings our total to 14 bikes within 3 years. This Memorial Ride would not have been successful without the undying support of Project ML-Gratitude Volunteers. They sold raffle tickets and arranged the items for the silent auction. All five board members were on hand to sign people up for the ride, answer questions, and manage the ride. All and all the ride was a great success for PTSD Veterans, Project ML-Gratitude, and of course Wheelz Bar and Grill. Without their support, this event would not have been possible. We are already in the process of planning the 5th Annual Veteran Memorial Ride. —Mark Jester, VP and Co-Founder HHH HHH4th Annual HHH Vets Memorial Ride and Benefit Photo by Peter Anderson Photography success HHHStory HHH >15<

It’s rare to find the luxury of a highend spa in a Colorado mountain town. Locally-based Spa Wailele brings resort-level treatments to Golden’s Applewood neighborhood, dazzling with every service on the menu. Set in a renovated 1950s gas station, Spa Wailele itself is a destination: colorful vibes draw inspiration from Palm Springs and Hawaii (in fact, ‘Wailele’ translates to ‘the waterfall’ in Hawaiian), and the spa’s menu caters to advanced and rejuvenating skincare treatments for the face and body, with massage included. The spa goes above and beyond to target skin damage at the root, focusing on repairing and healing. “It’s a boutique scale of a resort spa,” owner Amy Costello-Bowen said. “We have high standards for being results-driven and working with organic and natural treatments and products.” Spa Wailele won 5280 Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Award for “Best Spa of 2023,” which is heavily credited to the spa operating as a medical and resort crossover experience. This stems from Amy’s vast professional background as an advanced clinical aesthetician for over 22 years. However, Amy had a personal connection with skincare before stepping into the industry. She suffered heavily from cystic acne and spent years working with professionals to no avail; this became a driving force in Amy’s pursuit of research to find effective and natural healing options in the skincare world. After gaining her foundation in medical aesthetics, Amy transitioned into the resort spa scene. She tenured at high-end luxury resort spas, including Las Vegas’ Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa, followed by Denver’s Woodhouse Day Spa. Amy was ready to introduce the world to her vision in 2021, after years of working in the resort spa industry. Born from her intertwining passions of helping others and high-end luxury, Spa Wailele is a high-end space of pampering and exquisite attention to detail. The spa features cutting-edge facial treatments, with the highest quality products available. There are thoughtful nods to Amy’s childhood roots in Hawaii, plus customer service details inspired by her time working in cosmopolitan resorts. “We really believe in delivering what the client is paying,” Amy said. “We understand the value of them choosing to spend their time and money with us, and we make it count for them.” A popular treatment is the signature 90-minute Advanced HydraFacial, known for brightening and plumping the skin noticeably. facial leaves each client feeling pampered and relaxed. Stepping even further into the luxury health space, Spa Wailele also has a small café serving superfood smoothies, coldpressed juices, 100% Kona coffee drinks and hemp-infused mocktails. Even if a spa day isn’t on the agenda, customers are welcome to stop in for a refreshment on the go. Amy, with the support of her husband Rodney and daughter Avery, is passionate about creating a luxurious refuge from the chaos of city life. “I’ve loved this neighborhood since the 90s, and I really want to do it justice,” she said. “We appreciate the opportunity to bring something special to the community.” ★ Continued from previous page >18<

Breweries and Distilleries in Golden By Savannah Nelson Alcohol is to Golden as mountains are to Colorado: the town has a rich brewery and distillery scene born from the past and present. During the gold rush, miners found relief in the tastes of distilled spirits and moonshine. Then, in the 1870s, Golden faced an industrial boom rooted in business and science. From paper mills to railway exports and coal mining to clay quarries, Golden was considered the “Lowell of the West.” In 1873, Adolph Coors opened a brewery that used the fresh mountain spring waters of Clear Creek. It stuck. Since then, the town has thrived on beer brewing, tasting and enjoying. Here’s a list of breweries and distilleries in Golden. New Terrain Brewing Company As a top-rated brewery in Golden, New Terrain has an expansive and airy taproom, often with food trucks and live music onsite. It’s a slight drive out of town and surrounded by gorgeous mountain and valley views, with seating inside and out. The outdoor patio is pup-friendly. New Terrain’s beers have been winners at the Great American Beer Fest and are a top choice for locals. Golden City Brewery (GCB) was founded in 1993 by two geologists, who filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and started playing with German ale recipes. The tasting room was originally located in the sunroom of their house, serving out of half-gallon growlers and kegs. These days, the brewery has expanded in the same spot (still their home), though the carriage house has become the tasting room, the yard is the beer garden and the recipes have been perfected. GCB is known for reds, pale ales, pretzels and brats. Barrels and Bottles Brewery With two locations, Barrels and Bottles Brewery has created a name for itself as a top-notch brewGolden City Brewery >20<

ery with something for everyone. Their website’s description is simple: “In the beer industry, everyone wants to play off words that hopefully resemble them in some way. For us, it’s simple: we brew barrels of beer and serve bottles of wine.” If you’re a first-timer (or even a repeat visitor), you can’t go wrong with a signature wine slushy. Or, if you prefer beer, the orange creamsicle is exactly as delicious as it sounds. Foodwise, there’s baguette sandwiches and other light fare. Holidaily Brewing Company Drinkers with allergies or sensitivities to beer’s main ingredient (wheat) can find relief with Holidaily Brewing’s menu, which is entirely gluten-free. The owner created Holidaily after undergoing cancer in her early 30s and adopting a gluten-free diet as part of treatment; she quickly realized that, as a beer-lover, the existing gluten-free beers on the market lacked in taste and substance. Holidaily was born out of need: a brewery dedicated to creating delicious, high-quality, gluten-free beer. Over Yonder Brewing Company Over Yonder is an artisan brewery in the southwest part of Golden, near Red Rocks. They offer award-winning and experimental beers in a laid-back setting that captures the good-vibe spirit of Colorado. There’s a little something for everyone, from hazy IPAs to fruited sours to barrel-aged stouts. Over Yonder also has live music, food, concert shuttles, to-go ordering and a spacious taproom. Cannonball Creek Brewing Company Cannonball Creek is an unfussy brewery founded in 2013 by two beer lovers inspired by Golden’s history. “Cannonball” is a nod to the original name of Clear Creek, which runs through the town’s center. The microbrewery offers its menu of traditional brews in a relaxed tasting room and features a rotating lineup of food trucks. Dogs are welcome on the patios, too. Coors Brewing Company To many, Golden is synonymous with Coors. It’s the largest single-site brewery in the world and has been open since 1873. Most beer drinkers in Colorado have sampled a Coors, Coors Light, Blue Moon, or at least one of their numerous beer brands. Though Coors beers are typically purchased from a liquor store, there’s nothing quite like drinking a cold one from the source. They have an iconic tour that recaps the history of brewing and processing on-site. It ends with a complimentary sampling at the bar, making it a popular choice among locals, students and visitors. Continued on next page >21<

Ohm Brewing Company As a self-titled “neighborhood nanobrewery,” Ohm is the first brewery in Golden’s Applewood Neighborhood. It’s owned by a father-and-son beer-loving duo who quit their day jobs to pursue a passion instead. The menu features a variety of beers made for enjoyment rather than trend chasing. Ohm also has a food truck parked on the property Wednesday through Sunday. Mountain Toad Brewing Mountain Toad’s tagline says, “Beer hand-crafted by a small, local, independent brewery.” Sums it up! This spot is a snug microbrewery and taproom in a historic building, and it’s known for its large selection of craft beers, a fun patio, food trucks and events. Their aesthetic is led by a desire to create funky and innovative brews for the simple love of beer. Golden Moon Distillery This Golden-based distillery opened in 2008 with the mission to produce premium herbal spirits and liquors, fermented and distilled using methods originally used in the 1800s—using rare books from the 15, 17 and early 1900s as a guide. Golden Moon Distillery makes whiskey, gin, absinthe, grappa, apple jack and specialty liquors. As a special bonus, there may or may not be a swanky speakeasy in downtown Golden serving up vintage-inspired Golden Moon cocktails. State 38 Distilling State 38 Distilling was founded in April 2013 and pays homage to Colorado, the 38th State, and is known for its drinkable spirits. They’re one of a handful of distilleries in the US to make agave spirits and distill whiskeys on the grain for more flavor. Utilizing local products, State 38 uses Colorado grains and Rocky Mountain Water to create bourbon, vodka and gin, as well as the unique flavors of blanco, reposado and anejo agave spirits, plus absinthe, rye, wheat and peat-smoked whiskeys. Golden has been called “the Napa Valley of beer,” and it’s obvious why. Breweries and the unique flavors of locally crafted distilled spirits contribute to a culture of passion and creativity in the craft alcohol scene. With all the delicious drinking-out options, there’s plenty to see, sip and sample around town. ★ >22< Continued from previous page

By Savannah Nelson MATT Cassidy passion for living and learning Photos courtesy of Matt Cassidy >26< Booked and busy, Matt Cassidy is a conduit for fun, passion and entertainment. Cassidy is a DJ and event curator—a local mainstay who’s brought music and joy to the community, leaving an indelible mark as he goes. Born in Boston, Cassidy came to Colorado over 30 years ago and has become an integral part of the community. “I feel truly blessed to have so many unforgettable memories and the time spent in Golden.” Cassidy founded Cassidy Productions in 2000, which curates corporate and entertainment events. Over the years, he’s worked with clients such as Monster Energy, Red Bull and Warren Miller, along with numerous local brands and venues. “I love event curation and the entire process that comes with it,” Cassidy said. “It’s incredible to watch an idea come to life and see the whole thing through.” Cassidy fulfills his creative passions, too. He’s a respected independent artist and DJ with a stacked resume to show for it. “It’s truly my passion to play music for people,” he said. “Seeing the reaction from the crowd keeps me truly coming back for more, day in and day out.” Over the years, Cassidy has performed eight times at Red Rocks Amphitheater. It’s a career highlight—growing from fan to artist on an iconic stage. “Playing Red Rocks is something I hold near my heart,” he said.

>27< “I’ve played solo as a DJ all eight times, except when I played with my oldest son Grayson in 2022. He’s an insanely talented saxophone player, and it was a dream come true to share a stage with him!” One of Cassidy’s proudest accomplishments is his title of devoted husband for over 23 years and father to three boys. Balancing his busy professional and creative life with family life takes patience and commitment, but the rewards are immeasurable. “I have the most wonderful family and really couldn’t ask for anything beyond the pure joy they bring me,” Cassidy said. “My beautiful wife is such a bright spirit, and my kids reflect the magical essence she brings to all our lives.” Cassidy also has roots in the ski industry, first owning a small ski shop and running Icelantic Skis in Downtown Golden, and later touring with Warren Miller. F aith Tattoo Gallery has been a mainstay in Golden since opening its doors in 2003. Owner and artist Terry Weber has worked diligently to stand out and above, crafting an environment worth visiting with body art to cherish forever. “My favorite part is having a creative space for all art forms and creating a community based around that creation,” Terry said. “It’s a place where artists and art lovers can come together.” After graduating and entering the workforce, Terry realized he wasn’t happy wearing a suit every day and sacrificing his artistic passions. “My wife saw this and gave me the push I needed to leave the corporate world,” Terry said. “I’m on my 24th year of tattooing, and I love it more and more every day.” Faith Tattoo was created to fill the gaps that previously existed in the tattoo industry; back when shops had lessthan-savory reputations. “My goal was literally to be the anti-tattoo shop, tattoo shop,” Terry said. First addressing cleanliness, Faith was the first shop in Colorado to offer a completely single-use tattoo setup, as well as all-vegan products. “Second,” Terry said, “I wanted to create an inspiring gallery setting where you could bring your grandma, and she would feel comfortable getting tattooed.” Faith Tattoo also holds a reputation as the first studio in Colorado to be considered family-friendly. Guests, such as friends and family, are not only welcome but are encouraged to be brought along for tattoo appointments. “We treat everyone who walks through our door like a friend and welcome any and all from our community to get tattooed,” Terry said. Terry is a fourth-generation Colorado native and spent time in his childhood visiting Golden with his grandparents. Visits would include visits to the Golden Ram restaurant, Holland House coffee shop and Hatches Books as regular haunts. The Golden connection has come full circle for Terry. “The location of Hatches Books is ironically where Faith Tattoo is now.” Faith Tattoo’s location on 13th Street offers a link between the past and present. The shop is an upcycled space filled with nods to and appreciation for local history, from the pre-war sink to the recycled barn lighting. “Our studio is filled with local artifacts that are as unique as the tattoo you’re getting,” Terry said. “All the antiques have a story, just like your tattoo.” At Faith Tattoo, guests can expect a friendly environment and a compassionate artist to bring tattoo visions and ideas to life. They pride themselves on having talented, down-to-earth experts who make the experience approachable and easy. Tattoos have a way of bringing folks together from all walks of life. The artists at Faith Tattoo enjoy working together to create original, one-of-a-kind artwork in a safe and comfortable setting. To all guests, Terry has a simple message. “Welcome to Faith Tattoo Gallery, established in 2003,” he said. “Where the west gets tattooed! Everyone is welcome.” ★ Bring Your Grandma: Everyone’s Welcome at this Golden Ink Shop Faith Tattoo Gallery By SavannahNelson >29<

>33< Long Live Local Why would the world’s largest single-location brewery pick a small-batch, 10-year old outdoor apparel company, with a vintage surf and ski vibe, to design a new, collaborative line of merchandise commemorating their 150th anniversary? We like to think it’s because we share many of Coors’ most valued principles for quality, entrepreneurialism and innovation. We also try to run our business similarly to how Coors did back in 1873 with thoughtfully created hand-crafted products. It might also have something to do with the fact that we both share the same beautiful hometown of Golden, CO – a historic, small town nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains where the adventurous West still lives and inspires our work and products every day. This past year, the legendary Coors brewery celebrated 150 years of building an incredible legacy, and we were proud to introduce a new apparel collection we built collaboratively with the team at Coors Banquet, to celebrate that wonderful legacy. We invite you to come and see what’s new with YoColorado for 2024, when we’ll be releasing another exciting collab! Blazing the Trail Our story in Golden began over 10 years ago, with one vintage ski beanie design. Inspired by vintage designs from the 70’s and 80’s, my partner and I set off across the mountains of Colorado seeking out mom-and-pop shops who would be willing to give this single product a try in their store, and since then we’ve worked hard to build it into the little apparel brand it is today. Lots of folks ask us how we came up with the name “YoColorado”. It’s simply a play on words that borrows from the term “Yo!” - a way people have begun saying hello to each other in recent years, so our name is another way of saying “Hello, Colorado!” Now that we’ve proudly grown our small brand from one beanie into a full line of clothing and accessories, we hope you’ll visit our store when you’re in downtown Golden - or online at yocolorado.com - to come see what’s new as we continue our expedition into the world of outdoor fashion and try out some of the colorful, vibrant gear we pour our heart and soul into! Reimagining Outdoor Fashion YoColorado is an outdoor apparel brand with one specific aim: reimagining what it means to be fashionable in the great outdoors. In a fast-moving world, where everything seems to move a lightning speed, we aim to be a part of the slow fashion movement. What does that mean exactly, you may ask? By keeping our collections limited to smaller batches, and using materials that are high-quality and designed to last longer, we hope to minimize our impact on this beautiful world by slowing the turnover down a bit. This season our styles are inspired by Mother Nature, infused with happiness, and created with love. We take pride in every aspect of what we produce to ensure nothing but good vibes and fun adventures ahead. µ BY BRAD MILLER

When you think of Golden, Colorado, what comes to mind? For most of us who call Golden home, we envision a place where charm and nature converge in perfect harmony. We think of our welcoming and dedicated community, made up of families and individuals who love the unique blend of old and new that Golden provides. While it might not immediately come to mind, within this small, charming town lives an energetic, vibrant, comedic haven. You don’t have to hop on the 6 and head to downtown Denver during rush hour and pay egregious amounts of money to see live comedy. You can do it in the comfort of our little town. When it comes to humor, Golden is anything but dry. This past August, Beer Buzz Comedy Show celebrated two years of bringing laughs to Ohm Brewing Company every third Thursday of the month at 7 pm. “The show has been really fun and it’s been great to see how some of the Golden audience has reacted to different comics. We are very lucky to be a part of the community in this way,” says Jené Suplee Davis and Dayna McTavish, the comedians who host and produce the show. For one thing, it’s totally free. Of course, since the show is in a brewery, audience members are encouraged to sip on a local brew while they watch talented lineups of comedians from Netflix, Drybar Comedy and Comedy Works Denver. “There’s just such a great, talented rotation of upand-coming comics in Denver with so many styles, there is always a comedian for you,” McTavish emphasized. Davis enthusiastically added, “We welcome newbie audience members to their first Beer Buzz Comedy Show as well as our regulars who have barely missed one.” Either way, you can count on Beer Buzz Comedy every third Thursday of the month, rain or shine. In addition to the Beer Buzz show, local comedian Jeremy Cash runs the Golden Comedy Show out of the Golden Hotel. It has an old-fashioned feel with some very cool aesthetics. It’s also right in the middle of downtown and it gets good foot traffic,” says Cash. The first show in May 2023 was a great success and Cash is planning to run another show during the holiday season. Cash echoed the sentiments of the Beer Buzz producers: “The community has been very supportive. Most of the people that came to the show were local to Golden and found the show through Eventbrite.” So, when December rolls around, be sure to check for comedy events at the historic Golden Hotel. Standup comedy isn’t your thing? Don’t worry: Golden has an exciting and hilarious improv comedy show too. SCRIPTprov at Miner’s Golden’s Comedy Scene: Nuggets of Gold and Hidden Humor in your Hometown By Julia Foodman >34<

>35< Alley Playhouse in downtown Golden is an award-winning show that has been running since 2009. The show features the talents of the Dishwater Blondes Improv Troupe. In traditional improv comedy, scenes are completely improvised on the spot, but SCRIPTprov takes a unique approach and improviser hijack plays that already exist for a charming and delightful funny performance. Tickets are available on the Miner’s Alley Playhouse website. For those who want to try comedy without leaving the comfort of Golden or watch others practice their sets, head to Gennessee Pub and BBQ the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 pm for an open mic night. Both comedians and musicians are welcome to show off their talents. Alternatively, open micers can combine their musical and comedic talents: “One musician did hilarious musical improv and it was so good!” host Andy Potter excitedly said. So, next time you’re planning a traditional dinner and movie date night or you’re about the buy tickets for a show 45 minutes away, don’t forget you can strike comedic gold right here in Golden. Even the miners from our gold rush days would have put down their pickaxes to catch a performance and you certainly don’t want to miss out on the fun. ★

15 FAVORITE winter adventures to enjoy in the Golden area By Savannah Nelson >36< One of the greatest perks of spending time in Colorado— whether as a seasoned local, a part-time resident or a visitor passing through—is that it’s a four-season state. There’s no better example than Golden, sitting at the perfect position at the entrance to the Rocky Mountains and offering the best of each time of year. Because of its easy access to nature, Golden offers plenty of opportunities to opt outside during winter, with incredible scenery to savor and experience. Here are some of our 15 favorite winter adventures to enjoy in Golden. Snowshoeing To experience a truly picturesque Colorado winter, strap on some snowshoes and explore Golden’s beautiful rugged landscape. A favorite snowshoeing location is the Golden Gate Canyon State Park, which has over 42 miles worth of trails. Some heavy snow favorites (ideal for snowshoeing) include Horseshoe Trail to Frazer Meadow, Raccoon Trail Loop and Mule Deer Trail, each with incredible panoramic views. If looking closer to town (with access to breweries and coffee shops afterward), the Clear Creek Trail starts at Lions Park and is an excellent route during years with a good snowpack to cover the concrete trail. sledding Golden has toboggan-ready slopes at Golden Heights Park, Heritage Dells Park, or the hill near the Golden Community Center for winter fun for the entire family. These are BYOS—bring your own sled! Tubing Located just a short drive away in nearby Idaho Springs, snow tubing at Echo Mountain is a great way to experience the thrills of sliding down a slick incline in a speedy, inflatable donut. Add a soak in the hot local springs, then stop into Tommy Knockers for a beer to complete a well-rounded day trip before heading back to Golden! cross-country skiing Skiing isn’t just for the downhill; get a taste of fresh air mixed with great exercise with cross-country skiing in Golden’s foothills landscape. There are several groomed trails in nearby state parks, such as Golden Gate Canyon and Eldorado Canyon, offering incredible scenic views. golden art walk Golden is home to more than two dozen pieces of public artwork, located on the Clear Creek Trail and across Washington Avenue—both right in town. The Golden Visitors Center has free Golden Public Art Walking Tour Brochures, which highlight the mix of statues and murals around town. A stroll in the fresh winter air makes for a beautiful, easy and free outdoor activity. winter hiking With the aid of traction devices such as ice cleats and poles, most Golden hiking trails can be explored in winter, too. Be sure to slip on the extra traction, dress in warm layers and wear sunscreen! The views of Golden’s surrounding landscapes are extra magical with a fresh dusting of snow on top. winter rock climbing You might be familiar with Colorado’s sunny days year-round, even in winter. Though it can still get cold, you can also bet that high sun exposure will improve winter activities, including rock climbing. Many of Golden’s south-facing cliffs, including the Golden Cliffs at North Table Mountain, are sunny and dry—fun to climb even in winter. wildlife viewing One way to spend time outdoors in the comfort of your car is with a nature drive to spot deer and elk, and sometimes even more elusive animals like mountain lions or wolves—if you’re lucky! Head to Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve or Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge are incredible wildlife viewing options. biking Did you know that you can even bike on the snow? You might’ve heard of New Belgium Brewery’s “Fat Tire” beer, which is named after the mountain bike of the same name; its wide-width, studded wheels allow for traction on unstable and slippery terrain.

Pet-friendly options include the Tony Grampsas or Homer’s Run dog parks. Before heading out into the chilly weather, be sure to dress warmly in layers, apply sunscreen and stay hydrated! Stay safe in the elements, and have fun enjoying the beautifully scenic activities Golden has to offer during the winter months. µ

The history of The Buffalo Rose is intricately woven into the fabric of Golden, Colorado and the broader narrative of the American West. From its humble beginnings in 1859, when Golden was just a fledgling mining camp during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, to its current status as a beloved local landmark, the Buffalo Rose has witnessed and contributed to the town’s evolution over more than a century. While you may know the Rose as a lively bar and Western restaurant, it’s far more than just that. “The Buffalo Rose employs over 130 people. Among those, we have amazing teams that manage the restaurant, the Live Events (concerts), and the Private/ Special events (Weddings, corporate events, etc). We’re proud of being family-owned and statistically, in the top one percent of restaurants/venues with regard to employee retention,” General Manager, Giulianelli proudly boasts. But how did the Buffalo Rose grow into the proud pinnacle of downtown Golden it is today? By wearing many, many different hats. The building has been a legislative meeting location, a swimming pool, a union hall and a saloon, just to name a few. The story of The Buffalo Rose begins in 1859 when Golden City was founded amidst the Gold Rush. The original building, constructed in 1859, was the largest in Golden at the time, measuring 44 feet across Washington Avenue and 40 feet deep. This building housed twin storefronts on the ground floor and a significant public hall on the second story. This hall would later become known as “The State Room,” where Colorado’s Territorial Legislature convened in 1865 for Golden’s brief stint as Colorado’s Capitol, shaping some of the state’s earliest laws. In 1867, the building transformed into the Overland Hotel, a prominent hotel affiliated with Wells Fargo’s stagecoach operations. Notable figures like Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Philip Sheridan stayed here during the Civil War era. It also witnessed a notorious shootout between the Denver detectives and the Musgrove Gang in 1868. In the 1920s, a large two-story masonry building was constructed on the site, serving as a garage for some of the first cars made in the United States. The 1922 Churches Garage, featuring brick manufactured locally in Golden, was a hub for early automobiles, particularly Overland and Jewett models. However, with the discontinuation of Overland and Jewett automobiles in 1926, the garage’s automotive era came to an end. During this period, the Churches Garage adopted a unique business venture: a swimming pool open to the public, known as The Golden Plunge. This indoor swimming pool with its neon “SWIM” sign quickly became a local attraction. The Buffalo Rose: The Quirky, The Interesting and The Unexpected By Julia Foodman >38<

Despite the Great Depression causing its closure in 1929, The Golden Plunge experienced a revival in 1938 when Elwood Romney purchased it. Nils Christiansen, an Olympic athlete who had competed in the 1936 Berlin Games, worked as a swimming instructor here. In 1941, as World War II loomed, the Golden Plunge was sold to the local carpenters’ labor union, which transformed it into a union hall. During the war years, it still continued to bring the community together by serving as a roller skating rink and a social event venue. In 1953, the building took on a new identity when August Gaines Eaker converted it into Eakers Department Store, part of his Colorado-based department store chain. The store featured a mid-century modernist facade with large plate glass windows on the first floor and ribbon windows on the second floor. Eakers Department Store operated until 1985 when Ken Mueller acquired the property, annexing it into the neighboring Buffalo Rose Saloon. This transformation turned it into a concert hall, and a vertical clapboard wood facade was added. Over the next 30 years, the Buffalo Rose concert venue hosted countless musicians from around the world. The >39< Continued on next page

building remained largely unchanged, changing ownership several times, until 2016 when a local Golden developeracqu ired it. In 2018, a major renovation project began, breathing new life into the historic complex, when current owner Derek Giulianelli took over the property. The Washington Street facade was meticulously restored to echo the original Churches Garage and Golden Plunge architecture, while modern amenities were added to create a comfortable, contemporary event venue. The project included a new roof, bathrooms, flooring, heating/air conditioning, lighting, built-in furniture and a top-notch audio/visual system. “The Buffalo Rose hosts over 350 events per year between Private/Special Events and Live Events. Among those, we have many big name national acts that play in the Venue such as Winger, SuperDiamond and Jason Eady, to name a few. Our Private/Special Events are all amazing! From 60+ weddings and receptions per year to rehearsal dinners, retirement and birthday parties and Corporate events, they’re all so special. We host a number of really cool Non-Profit fund-raising events like Food For Thought which happens every June.” Today, The Buffalo Rose stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Golden and the American West. Its rich history, from the days of pioneers and gold seekers to the era of automobiles and concerts, has left an indelible mark on the town. With its recent renovation, the Buffalo Rose is poised to continue its role as a beloved gathering place, honoring its heritage while offering modern amenities to generations of visitors. As Golden’s oldest bar and a symbol of the town’s resilience and evolution, the Buffalo Rose remains an integral part of the community’s story—a testament to the enduring spirit of the American West. ★ >40< Continued from previous page

>44< Evening Following the highend theme of the day, Bridgewater Grill at the Golden Hotel is a delicious and upscale dining option downtown. Dinner at the Bridgewater Grill is reason enough to go all out if you’d like to dress up and take pictures together. Afterward, the night should end on a high note with some music and fun. Wrigley’s has a bustling night scene, the Buffalo Rose has live music and comedy shows, Ace Hi Tavern is lively and the Golden Moon Speakeasy is known for its upscale craft cocktails. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a dance floor or karaoke machine where your besties can sing “Let’s go, girls!” together after a perfect first day. Day 2 Morning A significant piece of Golden’s allure is its incredible natural beauty, which is reason enough to start the latter end of the girl’s weekend in the outdoors. Even in the winter and spring’s cooler temps, spending time in the fresh air is recommended for a quick dose of adventure, group bonding and joy. One option is to grab the gals, rent some gear and run to the mountains. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and even winter hiking are all options at the nearby Golden Gate Canyon State Park or Golden Gate Canyon, depending on snowfall, weather conditions and desired effort levels. For a less rustic route, Golden is home to an art walk that spreads across the Clear Creek Trail and Washington Avenue. There are over two dozen public art pieces, including a mix of statues and murals. Brochures with information on the self-guided tour are available at the Golden Visitors Center. The trail along Clear Creek is also lovely for a leisurely walk. Though the colder weather isn’t recommended for water recreation, in springtime, watching intrepid kayakers brave the icy water is entertaining. Afternoon If a girl’s getaway is about embracing fun and letting loose, jumping into Golden’s brewery culture is a must. Brewery-hopping gets the best flavors from all over town. Get started at Barrels and Bottles with a wine slushy or an orange creamsicle, and explore from there— Holidaily Brewing Company serves gluten-free beer, Cannonball Creek Brewing Company has a great range of drinks plus food trucks parked on-site and Golden City Brewery is known for its easy-drinking brews on the menu since 1993. New Terrain has incredible mountain views and a sizable on-tap menu, but it’s a bit outside of town; be sure to order an Uber to get around between drinks! Food-wise, grab lunch at the Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse or Anthony’s Pizza. Whatever you’re craving, you’ll be able to find it nearby, a perk of Golden’s almost-city vibes. Golden has places like Goozell Frozen Yogurt, Amore Gelato and Golden Sweets for a post-dinner treat—perfect for satisfying a collective sweet tooth in the group. >50< 4th Annual GOLDEN, COLO. – What’s cuter than over 1,000 friendly golden retriever pups and friends taking to downtown Golden one sunny winter afternoon? Absolutely nothing – that’s as cute as it gets. On Saturday, February 3, golden owners from near and far flocked to our little downtown for the third annual Goldens in Golden event, proving that whether you’re a dog or a human, it doesn’t get better than this. The third annual Goldens in Golden was a very special afternoon in downtown Golden organized by the City of Golden and Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies. The event included friends, fun, food, and festivities. Both dog food and human food vendors were present as well as several photo spots and freebies in the forms of dog toys and treats. The event officially started at 11 am, but prior to the start, crowds of thousands of people and their fluffy friends could be spotted within a mile of downtown making their way to the Golden Visitor Center on Washington Street where the event officially started. On Facebook, 2,500 people RSVPed as “going,” but the actual number of attendees present was estimated to be much higher. Once under the iconic “Welcome to Golden” archway, dog attendees enjoyed complimentary “pup cup” treats, took professional photos under a pup-sized Welcome to Golden Arch and picked up free Golden Doggie Bags. Their human counterparts enjoyed the many local businesses in historic downtown Golden, unlimited mingling with humans and dogs and a gorgeous, sunny fifty degrees day. At roughly 11:45, a group photo was taken and for the rest of the afternoon, visitors enjoyed our dog-friendly town. National Golden Retriever Day actually falls on February third, but the event was held on Saturday, February 4th to allow for more people to enjoy the event. And enjoy the event they did. Few events are truly this good for our community: Goldens in Golden brings an influx of visitors and locals outside who explore, enjoy, and fuel our local economy. Saying Goldens in Golden breeds community would be an understatement – there are few events anywhere where so many people enjoy each other’s company and presence in such a genuine and wholesome way. “This is the best day of my life,” said eight-year-old Emily while greeting many friendly goldens. Like many others, Emily was visiting Golden from over an hour away. She and her family drove in from Loveland with their golden doodle, Murphy. Don’t just take Emily’s word for how special this day was. Check out articles from People Magazine, 10News San Diego, Westword, The Denver Post, Mountain Town Magazine, 9News Denver, CGTN America and the Colorado Springs Gazette, all of whom reported on the event. Thank you to all who came out with their pet companions to enjoy our beautiful town. Mark your calendars for February 3, 2024 because next year, National Golden Retriever Day falls on a Saturday. If all goes according to plan, next year will see yet another sea of goldens and friends descend on our downtown for yet another glorious golden day in Golden.
