Still, wet or not, the world’s largest Pon-
derosa Pine forest beckons me in the sum-
mer, and my favorite place to stay, since I
was a kid, is Kohl’s Ranch. It’s located about
30 miles north of Payson on Highway 260
and is currently listed as a Diamond Resort.
The tall pines, creekside cabins and lush
lawns of the property will chase away your
memory of a hot steering wheel in minutes.
The original property was purchased by
the Kohl family in 1917. In the 1930s, the
family built cabins on the east side of Tonto
Creek and turned their home into a resort.
The family retired and sold the property in
1940. An excellent history is posted at the
community’s association website (www.
krhoa.org/history.html).
Kohl’s Ranch now offers studios, 1 and
2 bedroom cabins and a 2 bedroom house.
All of the accommodations include well
equipped kitchens, porches, AC, cable TV
and most rooms have decorative fireplaces.
There are BBQ grills, badminton and vol-
leyball courts, a pool, oversized chess board,
playgrounds, mini golf and trails throughout
the property. The lodge restaurant is very
good with a great variety of entrees including
steaks, pasta and ribs, fresh trout and gener-
ous salads. We have tried the breakfasts too,
and can recommend the Eggs Benedict.
