El Salvador

By: Heidi Flores

 GDP in billions: $50.9

 GDP per capita: $8,000

 Because of war and natural disasters, El Salvador
has had one of the weakest economies in Latin
America, but over the years they have become
more stable.

 Economic growth is still low, but inflation is under
control. Problems remain in areas such as income
inequality, and unemployment (that affected more
than half of the population), land reform,
deforestation, and pollution.

 Spanish (also called Castellano) is the official
language

 El Salvador is a Christian nation;
approximately 57 percent of the people belong
to the Roman Catholic Church.

 Another 24 percent are other Christian faiths,
including several Protestant movements that
are growing.

 Roughly 17 percent of the population claims no
religion.

 Hydropower: They create over 2/3 of their
country's electricity from it. They are able to get
so much hydro-electric power, because of its
300 lush rivers, that go down from El
Salvador's Highlands, to hydro-electric power
plants in the southern part of the country.

 Geothermal power: El Salvador uses a "green"
alternative to heat homes & buildings instead of
oil. Because, of many volcanoes, lakes, and
pools.

 Petroleum: El Salvador is located on the
Pacific Ocean, so it’s able to drill petroleum.

 Arable land: There soil is very rich, and fertile
because of all the volcanic ash in the soil, from
all the volcanic eruptions.
