Questions 19 to 26
You are going to read an article on a legendary discovery. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer
(A, B, C or D) and mark tlte correct letter A" B, C or D on your onswer sheet.
The tomb of King Tutankhamen (King Tut) is one of the most famous because of its well-known
discovery by Howard Carter, a British archaeologist. Tutankhamun's tomb is located in the Valley of
the Kings between the tombs of Rameses II and Rameses IV. Carter had been digging in the Valley of
the Kings for eleven years before he discovered King Tut's tomb in 1922. Tutankhamen was not an
especially important king, but his tomb was the only royal burial found intact in modern times. The
tomb was important because it enabled archaeologists to record what an Egyptian king's tomb looked
like and learn more about ancient Egypt.Although robbers probably had entered the tomb at lpast twice
in ancient times, its contents were almost undamaged when it was discovered by Howard Carter.
On 17 February 1923, an assembled audience of about twenty invited guests gathered in an
antechamber just outside King Tut's burial chamber deep within the Valley of the Kings to view
the unsealing of his burial chamber. They were there to view the undisturbed mummy of King Tut.
The Valley of the Kings was the elite Egyptian city of the dead that dates back to 4,500 years ago.
Previously, the pharaohs of ancient Egypt had been buried in pyramids. It is believed that this hillside
burial place was chosen to prevent robbery of the tombs.
Although, nearly all the vaults in the Valley of the Kings had been broken into, the first intact
tomb discovered by archaeologists was that of Tutankhamen, who reigned in the l4th century B.C. This
explains why there was great expectation at this point in time. The expedition's chief archaeologist,
Howard Carter, was very careful in clearing away the stone filling between the two chambers. The
audience was made up of archaeologists and Egyptian dignitaries who waited in silence. Carter revealed
.the most famous collection of the Egyptian treasures ever found. It was the solid gold coffin and famous
peaceful-faced mask of King Tutankhamen.
HoweveE this great discovery soon became famous for more dreadful reasons. Two months after
the discovery Lord Carnarvon, who was the project's flnancier, died of complications from a mosquito
bite. Then, his dog died. People began to connect the excavation to these deaths. Soon rumours began to
spread that. Carnarvon and the others had awakened the omummy's curse'. This was based on an imprint
supposedly found on Tutankhamen's tomb. It warned that "Death will come on quickly upon those who
disturb the rest of the Pharaoh'.
While many do believe that such legends are true, others consider these stories as myth and mere
superstition. So, is there any truth behind the so-called'curse'of King Tut? HowardCarter, the very
man who unravelled the mystery of King Tutankhamen's grave, survived the mummy's curse (at least
until his death in 1939). He was deeply worried by the public's eagerness to believe superstitious stories.
He even tried to argue that writings on the tomb sometimes contained protective formulas or messages
meant to frighten off enemies from this world or beyond.
Others too had tried to debunk the myth. For instance, eighty years after the tomb's discovery the
British Medical Journal published a scientific study of the mummy's curse. The author, Mark R. Nelson
of Monash University, Australia, examined the survival rates of the 44 Westerners identified by Carter as
bqing in Egypt during the opening of a chamber or coffln. This ruled out the death of Lord Carnaryon's
dog as being a victim of the curse. In addition, out of the 44 identified Westerners, 25 were present
during an opening or examination. They managed to continue living an average of 20.8 years after
being present at the opening of a chamber. While the rest, who were not present, lived 28.9 years. He
calculated the mean age of death for those exposed to bs 70 years and for those unexposed, 75. Hence,
the results of Nelson's study proved that the curse was indeed a myth!

Questions 27 to 32
You are going to read an article on a famous Malaysian athlete. Six sentences have been removed from the
article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences
which you do not need to use.
Carving A Name for Herself in Waterskiing
Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah was only five when she started her water-ski training and entered her first
competition when she was only eight. 27 While most teenagers her age are woffying about
state exams, Hanifah is anxious about becoming the top female water skier in the world.
She was exposed to waterskiing when her father organised the Putrajaya Waterskiing World Cup
in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation in 2008. This inspired her to join the sport after watching
world-class waterskiers competing in that world class event. 28
In the beginning, however, her father refused to teach her since she was only five years old and
most of her father's students were eight to twelve. 29 It was no surprise that she picked up
water skiing quickly as she comes from a family of water skiers.
Hanifah's secret to her many achievements is due to two important ingredients. 30 She
claims that she constantly competes against herself to better improve her performance. When it comes
to hard work, her role model is Datuk Nicol David who has proved that success could be achieved
through hard work and determination. Next, she owes her success to a good support team which has
been providing encouragement and assistance throughout her winning spree. This support team includes
her family, parents, coaches and the Youth and Sports Ministry These two factors ensured that she never
had a moment when she wanted.to give up. 31 Moreover, she was also worried of things
like financial problems and bad injuries which could hinder her progress.
Hanifah notes that her unforgettable memories include winning her first SEA Games gold medal
in 2011 in Palembang when she was eight. Subsequently, she became the youngest-ever gold medallist
as well as the Asian champion in 2013 at the age of 10. Other memorable wins were the clean sweep of
four Asian gold medals in the 2019 Asian championship for slalom, tricks, jump and overall.
32 But being Asia's best female water skier and a SEA Games gold medallist before
turning l5 surely distinguishes Hanifah from the rest.
