(A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A" B, C or D on your answer sheet.

DerekAmato stood above the shallow end of the pool and called for his buddy in the Jactzzi
to toss him the football. Then he launched himself through the air head-first, anns outstretched.

The tips of Amato's fingers brushed the pigskin - and he splashed through the water just before

his head slammed into the pool's concrete floor. He pushed to the surface, clapping his hands to
his head, convinced that the water streaming down his cheeks was blood gushing from his ears.

At the edge of the pool, Amato collapsed into the arms of his friends Bill Peterson and Rick
Sturm. It was 2006, and the 39-year-old sales trainer was visiting his hometown in Colorado.
Amato's mother rushed him to emergency, where doctors diagnosed him with severe concussion.

It would be weeks before the full impact ofAmato's head trauma became apparent: 35 per cent
hearing loss in one ear, headaches, memory loss. But the most dramatic consequence appeared
just five days after his accident. Amato awoke, feeling hury after near-continuous sleep, and
headed over to Sturm's house. As the two pals chatted, Amato spotted an electric keyboard.

Without thinking, he sat in front of it. He had never played the piano - he'd never had the

slightest inclination to. Now his fingers seemed to find the keys by instinct and, to his astonishment,
ripple across them. His right hand started low, climbing in lyrical chains of triads, skipping across

melodic intervals and arpeggios, landing on the high notes, and then starting low again and
building back up. His left hand followed close behind, laying down bass, picking out harmony.

Amato sped up, slowed down, let pensive tones hang in the air and resolved them into rich chords

as if he had been playing for years. When Amato finally looked up, Sturm's eyes were filled with

tears.

Amato played for six hours, leaving Sturm's house early the next morning with an unshakable
feeling of wonder. He had fooled around with instruments in high school, even learned a decent
rhythm guitar. But nothing like this. Though he knew he hadn't suddenly transformed into US

jazz pranist and composer Thelonious Monk - he wasn't that good - Amato had accessed a well

untapped creativity and ability he had never before touched; suddenly there was music rising up
spontaneously from within him, coming out his fingertips. How was this possible?

Within days of his injury Amato began searching the internet for an explanation, typing in

terms such as gifted and head trauma. He found the name Dr Darold Treffert, an expert on 'savant
syndrom e' , d condition in which individuals who are typically mentally impaired demonstrate
remarkable skills. Amato fired off an email; soon he had answers. Dr Treffert diagnosed Amato
with acquired savant syndrome. In the 90 or so known cases, ordinary people who'd suffered

brain trauma suddenly developed what seemed like almost superhuman new abilities: artistic

brilliance, mathem aticalmastery photographic memory. Dr Treffert believes that our brains come

with a wide array of 'factory installed' software - latent abilities that exist but we sometimes

don't have access to. The exact nature of an acquired savant's emergent abilities depends on the
exact location of the injury. That explains the wide variation in both the range of abilities found
in different individuals and their various manifestations.

Musical renown has yet to follow for Amato, though he did release an album, performed with
the famed jazz-fusion guitarist Stanley Jordan, and was asked to write the score for a Japanese

documentary. Still, the former anonymous sales trainer is an inspirational symbol of human

possibility for music lovers dreaming of grander things.

Savant expert Dr Treffert, neuroscientist Snyder and others spoke enthusiastically about
unravelling the phenomenon of acquired savantism in order to enable all of us to explore out

hidden talents. The DerekAmatos of the world provide a glimpse of this goal - untapped potential

lies in every one.
In Amato's playing, there is expression, melody and undeniable skill. And if this can emerge

spontaneously in him, who's to say what potential might lie dormant in the rest of us?

Adapted from Reader's Digest UK.

Questions 27 to 32

You are going to read an article about ways to reduce carbonfootprint. Six sentences have been removed
,fro* the article. Choosefrom the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two
extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

Ways To Reduce Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide released

into the atmosphere as we go about our daily activities. Greenhouse gases are the gases in the
atmosphere that produce the greenhouse effect and contribute to global warming and global

climate change. The negative impact that man leaves on this planet also includes pollution and the
rapid depletion of natural resources. Thus, carbon footprint refers to man's overall impact on the

earth and its environment.

Our total global emissions in terms of pollution and the impact upon our ecosystems is a good
reason enough for change which is to reduce carbon footprint in our daily life. Firstly, reduce

carbon footprint by learning the 5 R's: refuse, reduce, reuse, rot and recycle. Going zero waste is

a great step towards combating climate change.27 Opt to be more mindful of what you

really need and reduce what you purchase. Always find a way to keep an item out of the landfill by
keeping it in great condition, repairing or reusing it when it breaks. Set u a compost system for

your food scraps or find a food scrap drop offcentre near your house. 28 As zero wasters,

do your best to follow these 5 R's as closely as possible.

Toxins emitted by vehicles are also very dangerous for human health as can breathe the

air directly into their lungs. Challenge yourself to drive less and bike more. 29 You can

also take public transportation as it puts less cars on the road and reduces the amount of exhaust

filling the air at once.

Another way to reduce carbon footprint is to conserve water and protect our waterways. It is

vital to cherish the fresh water that we have. When you brush your teeth, turn the tap on when you

want to rinse your mouth only. Take shorter showers. Join or host a clean-up in your

local community. Avoid using dish or body soaps filled with toxins. 30

Mother Nature has a lot of seasonal foods to offer. Fill the majority of your plate with plant-

based food which is healthier and better for the planet. 31 Try to buy the majority of your

food as local produce. In addition, we can reduce in packaging which contributes additional waste

and spoilage and additional carbon footprint.

Fossil fuels are limited, have finite resources and can cause air pollution. When fuels are

burned, they emit toxins that speed up climate change. As such we can stop reliance on fossil

fuels and switch to sustainable and clean energy.32 There are also water and geothermal

power to consider.

In conclusion, follow the tips given and we will be on our way to reduce the carbon footprint

substantially. Minimize our carbon footprint in small little ways daily.

A Less fossil fuel is burnt in transporting the food from one part of the world to another.
B Riding your bike will let you get a workout while helping the environment.
C Make use of appliances like refrigerators, air-conditioners, heaters that are energy efficient.
D Properly recycle any plastic, paper, glass or metal that comes into your life.
E Other innovative ways to source energy in this day and age are solar and wind power.
F Green energy sources like solar and wind energy are renewable and not polluting.
G Refuse the usage of plastics and paper products and instead opt for reusables.
H Switch to all-natural or eco-friendly soap.

Here are some hotel reviews given by guests who stayed at these hotels. Read the reviews below and
answer the questions thatfollow.

Reviews on Hotels

A _ ADONIS STUDIOS

We had a fantastic time and met some of the nicest people! I will admit, we went with low

expectations. The rooms are basic and the bathroom small but it was clean and had everything you
needed. The beds were com$, as well. We probably had one of the most sociable holidays ever. We

spent many great nights and had great memories. Will definitely return.

B - ST NICHOLAS BAY RESORT HOTEL

Fanstastic views across St Nicholas bay. Great pool, cleaned regularly. Room facilities very good.
The staffwas exceptional. Probably the most friendly hotel staffI have met, and a special mention
to Michalis in the Astra bar, and Kostas, Irini and Eleni in the restaurant. There were many others
whose names we did not catch. Highly recommend this hotel.

C _ VASIA ORMOS HOTEL
The hotel was clean. The grounds were beautiful and the location is quiet with a small quiet beach
just across the road with free sun beds. There is always a sun bed around the pool so no need
to rush to put the towel out at silly o'clock! Lots of choices for breakfast and dinner. A helpful
receptionist who was advising us how to move about. She booked taxis, gave information and
organised car hire. When she realised we were heading off on a walk for the day, she organised a
last minute picnic lunch. A lovely break way. I would recommend this hotel to all.

D _ MINOS PALACE HOTEL
Surrounded by water and located on demi-island. Excellent location, food and service. I loved the
sheep yogurt and orange juice "squeezed by yourself' for breakfast. However, water in the pool
was quite cold, more like sea temperature. The staff at the reception was lovely, kind, welcoming
and engaging. The hotel itself is in a wonderful location and all the rooms have been refurbished.

E - SOFIA HOTEL

Reception staffwas helpful and efficient. My room was on the ground floor with a balcony facing
the road. The mattress was great and free parking was also a bonus. Breakfast was simple and
nothing special. WIFI was sufficient. There is noise from the aircrafts taking offas it is really close
to Heraklion International Airport. Water in the room was not drinkable.

F _ CORISSIA PRINCESS HOTEL
Lovely service from the moment we were picked up from the airport. We had a family room which
had a large balcony. It was spotless. We had a short walk to the restaurant for breakfast and dinner,
both of which were buffets. There was plenty of food, new dishes to try along with some traditional
cooking. All the staff spoke English and were really friendly and helpful.
