METAPHOR
A metaphor equates one thing to
another without actually comparing the two
A metaphor is also a literary device
that makes a comparison between two
different things. But unlike an analogy, it’s a
direct comparison.
4
METAPHOR - EXAMPLE
For example, ‘My sister is the devil.”
Now, we know that your sister isn’t
exactly the devil. However, the point
made is that your sister and the devil are
both evil.
You are my sunshine.
The moon is a white balloon.
The snow is a white blanket.
5
SIMILE
With analogy and metaphor out of the
way, simile is a piece of cake.
Why? Because a simile is actually a
metaphor.
However, where simile is different from
a metaphor is in the fact that it creates a
comparison using the word like or as
rather than making a direct comparison.
6
SIMILE - EXAMPLE
For example, ‘My sister is evil like the
devil.’ Similes can make the comparison a
little easier because they tell you what the
two things have in common.
He is as strong as an ox.
My heart is like an open highway
Last night, I slept like a baby.
7
ANALOGY
A comparison of two things based
on their being alike in some way
By definition, an analogy is a
comparison of two things with
similarities and differences. The
comparison can help you see the
similarities between them.
8
ANALOGY - EXAMPLE
For example, ‘Talking to my sister
is like shoveling before a snowstorm.’
Both tasks are useless, but you must
think about it a little which makes it
fun.
That's as useful as rearranging deck
chairs on the Titanic
Life is like a box of chocolates -
you never know what you're gonna
get
