The Visual/Verbal Fun Way
to Learn Math!
10 Niagara Avenue • Freeport, NY 11520
www.KnowledgeIndustries.com • 1 (800) 620-READ
Children Are Natural Visual Learners
From the time they are infants, children learn to make sense of the world through visual cues. Soon,
they are able to discern and understand patterns. By kindergarten, many kids can
comprehend abstract concepts such as interpreting quantative data presented in graphs, charts
and diagrams. Long before children can read–or even speak many words–they are able to
assimilate visual information with ease.
If you try explaining mathematical concepts with words alone, it takes a while. If you add
illustration to the words, the meaning is made clear. This is known as visual/verbal synergy.
For example: if you try explaining the concept of “half-ness” solely with text, it wouldn’t be as
illuminating as showing an illustration of a half-full (half-empty) glass, or two equal-size piles with
the same number of objects in each.
=
The visual/verbal synergy found in the sets in this catalog helps kids to understand basic arithmetic
operations–like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division–to more advanced concepts such
as fractions, geometry, algebra and more.
By using visual learning strategies, MathStart can increase the learning potential of all children!

Story Summary
Kevin likes to play with toy cars, arranging them in various color patterns.
His younger sister, Molly, not heeding her brother’s warning, starts playing
with them when Kevin leaves the room. With so much noise, Dad goes to the
room to find Molly crashing the cars, and after some fatherly words, helps
place the cars in order...a different order. When Dad leaves, Molly contin-
ues her play, and this time Mom comes to the room, gives some motherly
words, and helps Molly place the cars in order...another order. The family
dog gets into the act, but before Kevin returns, Molly gets the cars back in
the correct order. On a happy note, Molly gets her own set of cars for an
early birthday present.
