Read and listen.
Benteng Pendem (Indonesian for "Buried Fort"; Dutch: Kustbatterij op de Landtong te
Tjilatjap) is an abandoned Dutch fortress in Cilacap Regency, Central Java, which has become
the region's main tourist attraction. Built between 1861 and 1879, the fortress originally
served to defend the important port of Cilacap, though after a series of changes in ownership
it fell into disrepair in the 1960s. In 1987, it was opened to the public.
The pentagon-shaped site covers 6.5 hectares (16 acres), and consists of both original
buildings – including barracks, a clinic, and a prison – as well as several later additions. It is a
Cultural Property of Indonesia
Administratively, Benteng Pendem is located in Kebonjati Hamlet, Cilacap Regency,
Central Java, southeast of the regional capital Cilacap and on the southern coast of
Java.Behind the former fortress are oil storage facilities belonging to Pertamina, as well as a
Dutch graveyard. To the east of the fortress is Teluk Penyu Beach, and across the bay is Nusa
Kambangan Island. Busses to the fortress are available from the Cilacap bus terminal.
The pentagon-shaped Benteng Pendem covers a total of 10.5 hectares (26 acres), though
4 hectares (9.9 acres) have been used for the oil storage facilities. On site is an excavated
moat, 500 meters (1,600 ft) long, 5 meters (16 ft) wide by 2–3 meters (6 ft 7 in–9 ft 10 in)
deep. Originally, the moat had been 10 meters (33 ft) deep and surrounded the fortifications.
The tourist entrance on the eastern side of the fortress, built by the Cilacap government after
52 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
opening it to the public, is located in what was originally the rear of the Benteng Pendem.
Around the fortress, there are 11 places where cannons were originally sited.
The fortress includes a prison, a two-story ammunition hold, a 113-metre (371 ft) long
tunnel with four entrances, a barracks building with fourteen chambers, a clinic, and 330
meters (1,080 ft) of fortifications. These structures, constructed of brick which is covered in
plaster, are located under 1–3 meters (3 ft 3 in–9 ft 10 in) of dirt, giving the fortress its
popular name; from a distance, the buildings resemble mounds. They are generally in poor
condition owing to exposure to the elements, particularly seawater and moisture. All are in
the same architectural style, and many more are thought to remain buried – including an
undersea tunnel to Nusa Kambangan.
Since Benteng Pendem was opened to the public, amusements and other facilities have
been constructed on-site, including swings, slides, and dinosaur statues. Guides to the
fortress are available.

Title Nusakambangan
Identification Nusa Kambangan (also Nusakambangan, Kambangan island, or Pulau
Description Nusa Kambangan) island is located in the Indian Ocean, separated by a
narrow strait from the south coast of Java; the closest port is Cilacap in
Central Java province. Dubbed by one international journalist the "Alcatraz of
Indonesia",the island is notorious for its maximum securityprisons, home to
convicted murderers, terrorists, drug traffickers, and those convicted in high-
profile corruption cases. It is sometimes known as Execution Island because
the island is the main location for carrying out capital punishment around
Java.
The island was made into a prison island during the Dutch period. The
colonial government built a high security prison on the isolated island to exile
criminals and political dissidents. The prison on Nusakambangan was opened
in the mid-1920s by Indonesia's Dutch colonial rulers and was once
considered the harshest penal institution in Southeast Asia. The island was
declared off-limits in 1905 by the Dutch.
Its use as a prison island continued after independence. During the rule
of former PresidentSuharto, hundreds of political dissidents were imprisoned
on the island. Most were political prisoners, members of the banned
Communist Party of Indonesia or sympathizers. These political prisoners were
never brought to trial, and many of them died from hunger or illness.
In 1996, the island was finally opened to the public as a tourist
destination.
The island has also been involved in refugee handling. About 140 Afghan
refugeeswere detained on the island after their boat, which was en route to
Christmas Island, Australia, sank in rough seas on August 17, 2001.
However, more than 90 of these refugees would later escape on September
55 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
19, 2001, sailing away in small fishing boats and are believed to have headed
for Australia.
The island was also affected by the 2006 Pangandaran earthquake and
tsunami, when a 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake occurred off the coast
of west Java. At least 11 villagers disappeared and 8 people were killed in the
ensuing tsunami, two of which were prisoners at one of the Permisan prisons.
At least fifteen inmates on the Nusakambangan prison island near
Pangandaran were also missing.
Nusakambangan is separated from Java by the narrow Segara Anakan
strait. Being isolated from mainland Java, the island is relatively under-
developed and less inhabited and the wildlife is better preserved. The eastern
side of a bay is a nature reserve area where an old Dutchfortress is located
on the Karangbandung beach. As a lowland tropical rain forest,
Nusakambangan is biologically diverse.
More than 71 different bird species, 14 reptile species and various
mammal species are found in the island. Twenty-three bird species are
classified as protected, including Pacific reef heron (Egretta sacra), woolly-
necked stork (Ciconia episcopus), lesser adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus),
white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), brahminy kite (Haliastur
indus), and crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela). Several other protected
mammal species include the black-spotted leopard (Panthera pardus), Javan
muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) and Javan mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus).
Four of six endemicprimates in Java, namely Javan lutung (Trachypithecus
auratus), the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis), Javan surili
(Presbytis comata), and kukang (Nycticebus sp.), have been reported to live
on the island.
The island population is 3,000, excluding the prison inmates and staff;
most inhabitants are Javanese. Their main occupation is fishery and some
work in rubber and teak plantations. However, illegal logging activities,
mostly conducted by outsiders, threaten the island environment. Such
activities have resulted in a vast critically threatened land area of
approximately 30 km2.
There are nine prisons built in the island, seven of which are still used (an
eighth super max prison is under construction): Permisan prison, built in
1908, Batu prison, built in 1925, Besi prison, built in 1929, Kembangkuning
prison, built in 1950.There are also five inactive prisons: Nirbaya prison, built
in 1912, Karanganyar prison, built in 1912, Karangtengah prison, built in
1928, Gliger prison, built in 1929, Limusbuntu prison, built in 1935.
All of these were built by the Dutch, except Kembangkuning prison, which
was built after independence. Of these, Batu (literally "stone") prison is
considered the most famous.
From the mid-1990s, the island was intermittently promoted by local
authorities as a tourist destination, primarily for its caves, beaches, and
unusual wildlife that is extinct on Java.
Notable attractions include Permisan beach (Pantai Permisan) with its
beautiful white and gray sands near the Permisan jail lighthouse, Ranca
Babakan on the west coast of the island, White Sands beach (Pantai Pasir
Putih), and several caves such as Queen's cave (Goa Ratu). According to the
Cilacap Tourism Office, Nusakambangan was opened as a tourist destination
following an agreement between the Central Java Governor and Ministry of
Justice in 1996. The Cilacap government then invested some Rp 1.7 billion
(around $200,000) in preparations for the opening up of the island, most of
which was used on the construction of tourist-related infrastructure. A special
agency was also established to manage tourism on the island, with the
Nusakambangan Prison warden made head of the agency and Cilacap
Tourism Office chief as the deputy. No individual tourists are allowed, all of
the tourists within a group of minimum 15 persons which is arranged by
56 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
tourist agency then will be accompanied by security officers until maximum 6
p.m without overnight stay.
One of the main cultural events is Sedekah Laut (sea sacrifice), which is
held by the SurakartaSunanate every Satu Suro (new year) in the Javanese
calendar.

National Monument
The National Monument (Indonesian: Monumen Nasional,
abbreviated Monas) is a 132 m (433 ft) tower in the centre
of Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta, symbolizing the fight for
Indonesia. It is the national monument of the Republic of
Indonesia, built to commemorate the struggle for Indonesian
independence.
Construction began in 1961 under the direction of
President Soekarno. Monas was opened to the public in
1975. It is topped by a flame covered with gold foil.
The monument and the museum are open daily from
08.00 until 16.00 Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7)
throughout the week except for the Mondays when the
monument is closed. Since April 2016, the monument also
opens during night time, from 19.00 until 22.00 in Tuesday
to Friday, and from 19.00 until 00.00 in Saturday and
Sunday
After the Indonesian government returned to Jakarta from Yogyakarta in 1950 following
the Dutch recognition of Indonesian independence, President Sukarno began to contemplate
the construction of a national monument comparable to the Eiffel Tower on the square in front
of the Presidential Palace.
On 17 August 1954, a National Monument Committee was established and a design
competition was held in 1955. This attracted 51 entries, but only one design, by Frederich
Silaban, met any of the criteria determined by the committee, which included reflecting the
character of Indonesia in a building capable of lasting for centuries. A repeat competition was
held in 1960, but once again, none of the 136 entries met the criteria.
The chairman of the jury team then asked Silaban to show his design to Sukarno.
However, Sukarno did not like the design as he wanted the monument to be in the form of a
linga and yoni. Silaban was asked to design such a monument, but his design was for a
monument so large that it would have been unaffordable given the economic conditions at the
time.
57 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
Silaban refused to design a smaller monument, suggesting that construction be delayed
until the Indonesian economy improved. Sukarno then asked the architect R.M. Soedarsono
to continue with the design. Soedarsono incorporated the numbers 17, 8 and 45, representing
the 17 August 1945 Proclamation of Indonesian Independence, in the dimensions of the
monument.
The construction of Monas proceeded in three stages. The first period, from 1961/1962–
1964/1965 began with the official start of construction on 17 August 1961 with Sukarno
ceremonially driving in the first concrete pile.
A total of 284 piles were used for the foundation block. A further 360 piles were driven in
for the museum foundations, with work being completed in March 1962. The walls of the
museum in the base were completed by October. Construction of the obelisk then commenced
and was finished in August 1963. Work in the second stage, from 1966 to 1968, was delayed
by shortages of funding and the aftermath of the 30 September Movement coup attempt.
In the final phase, from 1969–1976, the dioramas for the historical museum were added.
Problems remained once construction was complete, and work was needed to solve problems
with water leaking into the museum. Monas was officially opened to the public on 12 July
1975.
The location of Monas is known as Merdeka Square.
The towering monument encapsulates the philosophy of Lingga and Yoni. Lingga
resembles an alu rice pestle and Yoni resembles a lesung rice mortar, two important
traditional Indonesian tools. Lingga and Yoni also symbolize harmony, balance, fertility and
eternal life with the lingga phallic symbol, representing masculinity, positive elements, and
daytime and the Yoni the female organs symbol, representing femininity, negative elements,
and night.
It also resembles the bloom of the famous Amorphophallus titanum, native to Indonesia.
Indeed, fiberglass Amorphophallus and Rafflesia sculptures are installed around the
monument. The monument consists of a 117.7m obelisk on a 45m square platform at a
height of 17m, the goblet yard. The obelisk itself is clad with Italianmarble.
The northern pond measuring 25×25 m was designed to cool water for the air conditioning
system of Monas as well as to enhance the beauty of the surrounding area. To the north,
there is a statue of Indonesia national heroPrince Diponegoro by Italian sculptor Cobertaldo.

Istiqlal Mosque
(Indonesian: Masjid
Istiqlal,lit. 'Independence
Mosque') in Jakarta,
Indonesia is the largest
mosque in Southeast Asia
and the third largest Sunni
mosque in term of
capacity. This national
mosque of Indonesia was
built to commemorate
Indonesian independence
and named "Istiqlal", an
Arabic word for
"independence". The
mosque was opened to the
public 22 February 1978.
Within Jakarta, the mosque
is positioned next to
Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral.
After the Indonesian National Revolution 1945–1949, followed by the recognition of
Indonesian independence from The Netherlands in 1949, there was a growing idea to build a
national mosque for the new republic, which had the largest Muslim population in the world.
The idea of constructing a grand Indonesian national mosque was launched by Wahid Hasyim,
Indonesia's first minister for religions affairs, and Anwar Cokroaminoto, later appointed as the
chairman of the Masjid Istiqlal Foundation. The committee for the construction of the Istiqlal
Mosque, led by Cokroaminoto, was founded in 1953. He proposed the idea of a national
mosque to Indonesian President Sukarno, who welcomed the idea and later helped to
supervise the mosque's construction. In 1954 the committee appointed Sukarno technical
chief supervisor.
Several locations were proposed; Mohammad Hatta, Indonesian vice president, suggested
that the mosque should be built near residential areas on Thamrin avenue, on a plot where
Hotel Indonesia stands today. However, Sukarno insisted that a national mosque should be
located near the most important square of the nation, near the Merdeka Palace. This is in
accordance with the Javanese tradition that the kraton (king's palace) and masjid
agung(grand mosque) should be located around the alun-alun (main Javanese city square),
which means it must be near Merdeka Square. Sukarno also insisted that the national mosque
should be built near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church, to symbolize religious harmony
and tolerance as promoted in Pancasila (the Indonesian national philosophy and the five
principles which constitute the philosophical foundation of Indonesian nationhood). It was
later decided that the national mosque was going to be built in Taman Widjaja Kusuma
(formerly Wilhelmina park), in front of the Jakarta Cathedral. To make way for the mosque,
the Citadel Prins Frederick, built in 1837, was demolished.
Sukarno actively followed the planning and construction of the mosque, including acting as
the chairman of the jury for the mosque design competition held in 1955. The design
submitted by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra, with the theme
"Ketuhanan" (English: "Divinity") was chosen as the winner. The foundation stone was laid by
Sukarno on 24 August 1961; the construction took 17 years. President Suharto inaugurated it
as the national mosque on 22 February 1978. As of 2013 it is the largest mosque in the
region of Southeast Asia, with a capacity of over 120,000.
In display of religious tolerance, during large Christian celebrations such as Christmas,
Istiqlal Mosque helped provide parking space for worshipers of the nearby Jakarta Cathedral
The mosque has seven entrances, and all seven gates are named after Al-Asmaul-Husna,
the names of God in Islam. The number seven represents the Seven Heavens in Islamic
cosmology. The wudu (ablution) fountains are on the ground floor, while the main prayer hall
and main courtyard are on the first floor. The building consists of two connected rectangular
59 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
structures: the main structure and the smaller secondary structure. The smaller one serves as
main gate as well as stairs and prayer spaces.
There are seven entrance gates to the Istiqlal Mosque. Each door is named from the
Asma'ul Husna (99 Names of Allah). Of the seven doors are three doors namely Al Fattah, As
Salam and Ar Rozzaq is the main door. The seven doors are:
Al Fattah/( ﺍﻟﻔﺘﺎﺡGate of Opener): the main door on the northeast side opposite the
Cathedral Church. This door is a door for the public that is always open and is located
in a companion building with a small dome above it.
Al Quddus/( ٱ ْﻟﻘُﺪﱡﻭ ُﺱGate of Sanctity): the door on the northeast side is located at the
corner of the main building of the mosque.
As Salam/( ٱ ْﻟ ﱠﺴ َﻼ ُﻡPeace Gate): one of the main doors is located at the north end at the
corner of the main building. The door goes directly to the front shaf of the prayer line,
so this door is used for important VIP guests, such as clerics, foreign guests,
ambassadors from Muslim countries, and other important guests at important religious
events.
Al Malik/( ﺍﻟﻤﻠﻚKing's Gate): VVIP door on the west side at the corner of the main
building of the mosque. Like the door As Salam, this door is also directly headed near
the front shaf of prayer lines, so this door is used for important VVIP guests such as
the president and vice president of Indonesia as well as visiting country guests.
Al Ghaffar/( ٱ ْﻟﻐَﻔﱠﺎ ُﺭGate of forgiveness): this door is located at the south end of the
courtyard hall building, just below the minaret of Istiqlal Mosque. This door is the
closest to the southeast gate as well as the furthest from the mosque mihrab.
Ar Rozzaq/( ٱ ْﻟ ﱠﺮ ﱠﺯﺍ ُﻕGate of sustenance): one of the main doors is located in the middle of
the south side of the hall of the Istiqlal courtyard. From this door there is a straight
corridor linking it to Al Fatah's door on the northeast side.
Ar Rahman/( ٱ ْﻟ ﱠﺮ ْﺣ َﻤﺎﻥGate of Compassion): this door is located in the southwest corner of
the mosque's hall building, near the door of Al Malik.

Raja Ampat Islands
Located off the northwest tip of
Bird's Head Peninsula on the island
of New Guinea, in Indonesia's West
Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the
Four Kings, is an archipelago
comprising over 1,500 small
islands, cays, and shoals
surrounding the four main islands
of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and
Waigeo, and the smaller island of
Kofiau. The Raja Ampat archipelago
is the part of Coral Triangle which
contains the richest marine
biodiversity on earth. Most of the
archipelago is in the Southern
Hemisphere, with a few small
islands northwest of Waigeo such as
Sajang Island in the Northern Hemisphere. Some of the islands are the northernmost parts of
the Australian continent.
Raja Ampat Regency is a new regency which separated from Sorong Regency in 2004. The
population of the Regency was recently (January 2014) put at 49,048. It encompasses more
than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine
national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua province of Indonesia
which was formerly Irian Jaya.
The name of Raja Ampat comes from local mythology that tells of a woman who finds
seven eggs. Four of the seven hatch and become kings who occupy four of Raja Ampat
biggest islands whilst the other three become a ghost, a woman, and a stone.
History shows that Raja Ampat was once a part of Sultanate of Tidore, an influential
kingdom from Maluku. Yet, after the Dutch invaded Maluku, it was claimed by the
Netherlands.
The first recorded sighting and landing by Europeans of the Ampat Islands was by the
Portuguese navigator Jorge de Menezes and his crew in 1526, en route from Biak, the Bird's
Head Peninsula, and Waigeo, to Halmahera (Ternate).
The English explorer William Dampier gave his name to Dampier Strait, which separates
Batanta island from Waigeo island. To the east, there is a strait that separates Batanta from
Salawati. In 1759 Captain William Wilson sailing in the East IndiamanPitt navigated these
waters and named a strait the 'Pitt strait', after his vessel; this was probably the channel
between Batanta and Salawati.
The main occupation for people around this area is fishing since the area is dominated by
the sea. They live in a small colony of tribes that spreads around the area. Although
traditional culture still strongly exists, they are very welcoming to visitors. Raja Ampat people
are more like Ambonese than Papuan people and now some of them are Muslim and some of
them are Christian.
61 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
The oceanic natural resources around Raja Ampat give it significant potential as a tourist
area. Many sources place Raja Ampat as one of their top ten most popular places for diving
whilst it retains the number one ranking for underwater biodiversity.
According to Conservation International, marine surveys suggest that the marine life
diversity in the Raja Ampat area is the highest recorded on Earth. Diversity is considerably
greater than any other area sampled in the Coral Triangle composed of Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and East Timor. The Coral Triangle is the
heart of the world's coral reef biodiversity, making Raja Ampat quite possibly the richest coral
reef ecosystems in the world.
The area's massive coral colonies along with relatively high sea surface temperatures, also
suggest that its reefs may be relatively resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral
disease, which now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystems around the world. The
Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.
The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the
Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the two
oceans. Raja Ampat's coral diversity, resilience, and role as a source for larval dispersal make
it a global priority for marine protection.
1,508 fish species, 537 coral species (a remarkable 96% of all scleractinia recorded from
Indonesia are likely to occur in these islands and 75% of all species that exist in the world),
and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering. Some areas boast enormous
schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs.
Raja Ampat Islands have at least three ponds containing harmless jellyfish, all in the
Misool area.
Although accessing the islands is not that difficult, it takes some time. It takes six hours
flight from Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia to Sorong. Then, taking a boat to reach the
islands is necessary.

St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Jakarta
Jakarta Cathedral (Indonesian: Gereja Katedral
Jakarta) is a Roman Catholiccathedral in Jakarta,
Indonesia, which is also the seat of the Roman Catholic
Archbishop of Jakarta, currently ArchbishopIgnatius
Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo. Its official name is Gereja
Santa Perawan Maria Diangkat Ke Surga (from Dutch,
De Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming, in
English: The Church of Our Lady of Assumption). This
current cathedral was consecrated in 1901 and built in
the neo-gothic style, a common architectural style to
build churches at that time. The Jakarta Cathedral is
located in Central Jakarta near Merdeka Square and
Merdeka Palace, it stands right in the front of the
Istiqlal Mosque.
The plan of the cathedral took the form of a cross with a length of 60 meters and 10
meters wide, plus 5 metres on each aisle. It is a cathedral because it contains the "cathedra",
the throne of bishop. The main entrance of the building is facing west. At the center of the
main portal stands a statue of Our Lady Mary while on top of the portal there is a sentence
65 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
written in Latin: "Beatam Me Dicentes Omnes Generationes" which means "All generations
shall call me blessed". Besides, there is a large round stained glass Rozeta Rosa Mystica,
which is the symbol of Mother Mary.
There are three main spires in Jakarta Cathedral: the two tallest ones measured 60
metres tall and are located in front on each side of the portal. The north tower is calledTurris
Davidica, or "Tower of David"—a devotional title of Mary symbolizing Mary as the refuge and
protector against the power of darkness. The south tower, also 60 metres tall, is called "The
Ivory Tower", which the whiteness and pureness of ivory describe the pureness of Virgin
Mary. On the Ivory Tower, there are old clocks that are still functioning as well as a church
bell. The third spire rises above the roof's cross intersection and measured 45 metres tall
from the ground, and is called "The Angelus Dei Tower".
The building consists of two floors, the upper floor can be reached from a flight of stairs in
the northern tower. Originally, the second floor used to be the place for the choir during
masses, but since the cathedral is quite old, there is concern that the building cannot support
the weight of too many people upstairs. Today, the upper floor functions as the Jakarta
Cathedral Museum, housing the relics of Catholic rituals, such as the silver cups, hats and
robes of the Dutch East Indies and Indonesian Archbishops and Cardinals. The museum also
displays the history of Roman Catholicism in Indonesia.
On the southern side, there is a statue of Pietà, describing the sadness of Mother Mary
while holding the body of Jesus Christ after crucifixion. The wall surrounded the interior have
several scenes depicting Stations of the Cross. The cathedral has four pulpits for confession
services, two on each side. At the center, there is a high raised wooden podium with shell-
shaped roof for sound reflection. The podium was installed in 1905 and display the images of
Hell on the lower side while the images of Jesus' sermons and other scenes are on the middle
side. The top of the podium display the scene of Heaven adorned with winged angels. On the
southern side, there is a large Neo-Gothic style organ made in Verschueren, Belgium, then
moved and installed in Jakarta in 1988. This organ was taken from Amby village near
Maastricht.
There are three altars in this cathedral: on the left side is "The Altar of Saint Mary", to
celebrate the assumption of Mary to Heaven. The altar was made in 1915 by Atelier
Ramakers. On the right side is "The Altar of Saint Joseph", completed in May 1922. The
throne of bishop called "Cathedra" is located on the left side with three thrones. The main
altar located in the center was made in the 19th century in the Netherlands. It was moved
from a Jesuit church in Groningen in 1956. In this altar there is a main cross of Jesus and the
tabernacle.
The body of the building was made of thick red bricks covered with plaster and applied
with patterns to mimic natural stone construction. The large wall was made to support wide-
spanned teak beams in the roof construction. The top of the spires was made from iron
frame, while the roofs were made of teak wood construction. Actually, iron and wood are not
suitable as typical Neo-Gothic architecture materials usually employ stone masonry. However
these materials were chosen because they are relatively lighter than stone masonry,
considering Indonesia is a region that is prone to earthquakes.

Raja Ampat or 'Four Kings', is the name given to some islands in West Papua and comes
from a local myth. The four major islands are Waigeo, Misool (which is home to ancient rock
painting), Salawati, and Batanta. Raja Ampat is located in the bird head of the island of
Papua. Underwater enthusiasts flock to this region because it offers the world's best marine
sight. In the Raja Ampat islands, divers can explore vertical underwater walls. The thrill of
drift diving is another great challenge.
The territory within the islands of the Four Kings is enormous, covering 9.8 million acres
of land and sea, home to 540 types of corals, more than 1,000 types of coral fish and 700
types of mollusks. This makes it the most diverse living library for world's coral reef and
underwater biota. According to a report developed by The Nature Conservancy and
Conservation International, around 75% of the world's species live here.
When divers first arrive here their excitement is palpable. It's common to hear people
praise God as they take in the remarkable scenery. Others prefer to remain in silence taking
in the overwhelming sight of so many islands with crystal clear water that softly brushes over
the white sandy beaches.

The Houses of the Toraja
The ethnic groups in the mountain regions of southwest and central Sulawesi (Celebes)
are known by the name of Toraja, which has come to mean "those who live upstream" or
"those who live in the mountains". Their name is in fact derived from the word Raja, which in
Sanskrit means "king". The society is hierarchically structured: the noblemen are called
rengnge, the ordinary people to makaka, and the slaves to kaunan; birth determines which
rank a person will occupy.
The distinctive features of the traditional houses (tongkonan) of the Toraja are the
"buffalo horns", the roof design and the rich decoration on the walls. The buffalo is a symbol
of status, courage, strength and fighting spirit.
Designed as a representation on the universe, the tongkonan is constructed in three
parts: the upper world (the roof), the world of humans (the middle of the building), and the
underworld (the space under the floor). The highly distinctive roors constructed by the Toraja
given rise to various ingenious interpretations. Certainly the roof is something of deep
significance for the Toraja, and even today they build "modern" (in other words houses built
with cement) houses with such roofs.

at an airspeed of 400 miles per hour. The time is 1:25 pm. The weather looks good and
with the tailwind on our side we are expecting to land in London approximately fifteen

77 Students’ Book 1 A for X Grade Students of Senior High School
I'll talk to you again before we reach our destination. Until then, sit back, relax and enjoy
the rest of the flight.
Safety Briefing
Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the crew I ask that you please direct your attention to
the monitors above as we review the emergency procedures. There are six emergency
exits on this aircraft. Take a minute to locate the exit closest to you. Note that the nearest
exit may be behind you. Count the number of rows to this exit. Should the cabin
experience sudden pressure loss, stay calm and listen for instructions from the cabin crew.
Oxygen masks will drop down from above your seat. Place the mask over your mouth and
nose, like this. Pull the strap to tighten it. If you are traveling with children, make sure
that your own mask is on first before helping your children. In the unlikely event of an
emergency landing and evacuation, leave your carry-on items behind. Life rafts are
located below your seats and emergency lighting will lead you to your closest exit and
slide. We ask that you make sure that all carry-on luggage is stowed away safely during
the flight. While we wait for take off, please take a moment to review the safety data card
in the seat pocket in front of you.
