Principles of Design Amad Clark Period:1
Emphasis • Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer's attention. Usually, the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc. • For example, using a dark-colored element within a brightly colored page is likely to emphasize the dark-colored element against the rest of the content.
Balance • Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. • If you draw a line down the center of the page, all the visual elements on one side of the screen are mirrored on the other side.
Alignment • Alignment is the arrangement of elements on a page that keeps them from being a complete disorderly mess. • There are several examples of alignment in graphic design. They include edge, mixed, vertical, center, justified, visual, and horizontal alignment. Edge alignment determines the placement of elements about the edge of the page or canvas.
Contrast • The design principal contrast refers to the use of visually different elements. In addition to capturing attention, contrast can guide the viewer's eye to a focal point, highlight important information, and add variety, or even drama, to a design. • It can be as simple as using light and dark colors and big and small sizes. Or it can be more complex and involve using different shapes, textures, and values.
Repetition • In design, repetition means reusing elements — colors, patterns, fonts, images, textures and more — throughout a piece of work. • For example, you could draw a line horizontally and then draw several others next to it.
Proportion • Proportion in the principles of design is the sense of unity created when all the elements in a composition relate well with each other. • For example, the relationship between the vertical and horizontal measurements of a wall hanging.
