My Life as a Black
Brant
Chick Days
I hatched in the summer in july with my brothers and
sisters in my mama's very soft nest up in the canadian
arctic.
We live with all of the other families up north in one
big group, or one big family as i see it!
Mama fed us eelgrass and little bugs for the first
two days, after that we just got out of the nest and
did it ourselves!
The first time down south!
After 40 days, I got my feathers! It was getting cold
so it came in handy!
Around the middle of Fall, mama told me we have to
fly a really long way to Southern california. She
said it was a long flight, but with breaks so everyone
can rest.
Halfway point
Only half way there! That means i have to molt for
the first time. Time to change out of my coat and get
ready for the nicer weather!
Next stop, our summer home in baja California!
Vacation time!
Mama never told me how nice it is down in
california. This is so much nicer than how cold it is
up in Canada right now! Everyone was exhausted
from that flight down, that only took us two weeks!
Did you know we live for 15-20 years? That means we
can do this same flight over and over again! What am
i saying, i haven't even flown back home for the first
time yet!
The return back home
After building up our energy by eating sea grass and
insects, we finally get to go home! It is late march
now and we have had too much fun in the warm sun!
This is my first time going back to my summer home,
hopefully we won't get caught by hunters or getting
lost over the cities on the coast!
Home sweet home!
We made it back home! It was a long journey back but
we made it look easy! It's definitely a lot warmer
than i thought it would be, It's been like that for a
while my mama would tell me, it’s just getting hotter
and hotter. However the world is a changing place!
And hopefully humans will know the power of
climate change soon enough!
The end
