2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Biggleswade United Good evening & a huge welcome to Gareth, Jordan, the coaches, players, supporters, and all associated with Biggleswade United ahead of this evening’s league clash and a return home. Biggleswade United set the pace earlier in the season and despite a difficult run of results of late, present us with a hugely difficult test tonight. I alluded to form on many occasions in my previous programme notes and how in this league a fantastic run can sometimes culminate in an equally challenging run of results. Biggleswade come into the game off the back of a disappointing result on Saturday at home to Colney Heath. I was asked on Saturday evening if now would be a good time to play Biggleswade United? My answer is we will only know at 10pm. I am very weary of an inevitable backlash this evening. Biggleswade United have really good players all over the pitch and several players I have admired as well as an excellent joint management partnership of Gaz and Jordan that know this level inside out. Whilst results won’t be what they have been hoping for things can change so quickly and we need to ensure that we don’t allow ourselves to be victims of their turnaround this evening. Prior to the last 4 games we went on a horrific run ourselves where it genuinely felt like we would never taste victory ever again. It sounds dramatic but once you are in a rut like that It feels like the tide will never turn. I am glad that over the last 4 games we have got back closer to ourselves but still we have loads of work to do. We enter a massive period for us as a group over the next 11 weeks that sees us play 16 league games of which 10 are at home and in addition to that another 2 cup games as a minimum. As predicted the schedule is going to be full on between now and the conclusion of the league campaign. Momentum and consistency have been incredibly hard to achieve for such a number of circumstances. Whilst consistency has been so hard to find this season with regards to team selection, a run of games and performance levels there have been many things that have remained consistent. The consistent support you have all shown me, Kyle, Anthony and all our players has been fantastic. The support the Chairman and Board of Directors have given us has been unbelievable especially after a horrible run of results. I was very honest about my feelings during that run. There was never any external pressure coming at us, just the pressure I created for me, Kyle, Anthony, and the players. We stuck together and that is the constant driver behind and incessant need to perform and get us into those play off places. That is by no means HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 over and done with and all we need is to turn 4 games unbeaten into 5 games unbeaten tonight and just keep finding a way to win. Clean sheets and being hard to beat has always been a basic need for my teams. An ability to keep the ball out of the net consistently always shows a team’s true character. Any team can produce a moment of magic in an instant to win a game, it takes a lot of huge characteristics to keep a team away from your goal for 95+ minutes. I want to refer to 2 players that I have been absolutely delighted with that personify how we go about things. Danny Webb and Tolu Ikuyinminu are statistically our most productive attacking players and get us all off our seats on a regular basis. What is even more impressive is their attitude to press, track and shut down opponents from the front that gives us such a solid platform when defending from the front. Their work rate does not go unnoticed, and it is appreciated by us all. Speaking of dedication and work rate I also want to give a huge thank you to Steve Lewington. Steve is without a doubt the best kit man in the business in my opinion. His attention to detail, planning, preparation, support, and everything he does is exceptional. He deserves all the praise he gets for his work that goes above and beyond for our football club. He has Luton Town season tickets and sacrifices the opportunity to watch his beloved Luton in the Premier League of all places to go above and beyond for us all. Without Steve my job would be impossible, he really is the glue that keeps us all together during the toughest of periods and makes my job a lot easier. He never takes the credit, always says “it’s his job” when thanked but believe me, what he does is above and beyond anything I have seen. For me to say that who is probably the most demanding person since Lord Sugar is saying something. Freddie Lewington also deserves a huge thank you from myself and the players. Freddie as you will all know is as passionate about Dunstable Town as anyone. When all his mates are running around in Premier League shirts, Freddie like his brother George don the Dunstable Town shirt with pride. Freddie a Luton Town season ticket holder was given the straight choice of watching Luton Town vs Everton in the FA Cup or coming to watch us at Potton United! Being a huge Luton Town supporter myself I would have understood if Freddie had chosen Goodison Park. He did not, he chose to follow us. Humbled beyond belief to have heard that. Thanks Freddie, absolute hero to us all. The support you gave us at Potton United was absolutely immense. I am sorry we did not bring the 3 points home, but we did all we could. The way you conducted yourselves in the face of some incredibly challenging moments was an absolute credit to our Football Club. I was proud of you all. To see so many of us travel to Potton on a Saturday afternoon in January and roar the lads on was superb. The claps of appreciation to us all when we left the pitch at the end despite that gut wrenching 2 points dropped so feels like a loss feeling I had, and I am sure you all shared was really inspiring. As I have said to the players, we need to manage games better and turn such dominant performances into emphatic victories. My players are working incredibly hard, we will not stop working to get our Dunstable Town family to where we all want to be. It will not be easy, but we are so much stronger together. In the football world where so many teams turn in on each other to see our loyalty and togetherness is something to behold. Thank you to you all and enjoy tonight’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Biggleswade United Good evening, everyone & welcome to Creasey Park for this evening’s Spartan South Midlands Football League, Premier Division fixture against Biggleswade Utd. Thank you for braving whatever elements the weather gods have ready for us and coming out to watch what I expect to be an exciting contest between our two sides. There’s always a special welcome from me for Tracey James who is the Biggleswade Secretary. Tracey’s devotion and love for her club is an increasing rarity in the game these days. She’s served Biggleswade Utd for more years than she’d prefer me to tell you & is one of the unsung heroes of the non-league game. Whatever inter club rivalry exists there is an unofficial secretary’s union who will support each other and answer any questions relating to the vagaries and peculiarities of the FA rule book. Tracey is one of my go-to colleagues when I’m faced with a situation I’ve never come across before & has helped on many an occasion. I hope Tracey & all her committee colleagues, the players, and coaching staff and all the supporters of Biggleswade Utd have an enjoyable evening in our company & a safe journey home come 10 o’clock this evening. Many thanks to all of you who travelled in good numbers up to Potton on Saturday. The attendance was Potton’s highest of the season & not for the first time your support exceeded the home Club’s average and was recorded as their highest of the season. Saturday’s attendance of 171 was nearly 100 higher than their season average of 87 so we’re getting back to nearly 100+ supporters travelling to away matches. Something we achieved three times last season, but only once this season for the derby away at Harpenden. The first half performance from the lads was, I think, some of the best 45 minutes of football I’ve seen us play all season. Without the heroics of the Potton keeper who made save after save we could have been three or four up by half time. The link up between Tolu, Danny & JSW was beautiful to watch. But as every seasoned football coach will tell you, failure to put games to bed can come back and bite you on the posterior as happened on Saturday. Just two minutes away from a 4th consecutive win and clean sheet, Potton were awarded a penalty and a share of the points. It was one of those games where despite the draw, it felt like a defeat. Even so that makes it 10 points from a possible 12 and with only four points separating Biggleswade Utd, currently in 14th place & Colney Heath, currently in chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 7th place, there is still everything to play for. Of our remaining 16 League games left to play, 10 are at home, with only six away. We have the 3rd best record at home and conceded the fewest number of goals at home. In fact, the defence overall is the 4th meanest in terms of goals conceded so the stats suggest we should be looking to finish the season strongly. A fortnight earlier we’d beaten Potton Utd at home in front of an excellent crowd of 239. The first half had been a dour affair but sprang into life with, I believe, just 19 seconds of the second half played, when Harry Beaumont volleyed home a sumptuous volley which was followed up by a Tolu special, 20 minutes later. On the left-hand side of the goal, Tolu struck the ball with such power that even from the tightest of angles the Potton keeper could do nothing to keep the ball out. In between then, of course, we’ve had the same bad weather postponement that blight the non-league game up and down the country at this stage of the season. There’s a compelling argument for more clubs to follow Harpenden’s lead and turn the grass pitch into an all-weather pitch. I’m a football purist at heart and grew up in the old days watching football at the mud bath that was the old Baseball Ground. But the thing about the old days, is that they are exactly that, the old days. Times change, attitudes change, and we tend to give a damn more about player and spectator well-being than back in the day. We don’t own Creasey Park, just hire the facilities, so it’s not our decision whether to spend north of half a million pounds to turn the pitch into an all weather pitch, but it makes sense to do so, not just in terms of making sure there are less postponements but also from the perspective of enabling both Dunstable Town & AFC Dunstable register new teams and benefit all the young people in our local community who want to be part of a thriving football community able to meet their needs. From a financial perspective I’m just surprised the Council haven’t taken the plunge already. I’m sure the decision makers have access to the same information that we do and can do the same sums that show how the capital expense involved in the initial outlay is more than recouped within the first few years of its usage. Enjoy tonight’s game, be loud, be proud, but as always please be respectful of our opponents and this evening’s match officials.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Biggleswade United Biggleswade United Football Club was re-formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second Meadow as early as 1929. Their first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division 1 they sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In 1986 they elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 1987/88 proved to be the turning point in the club’s fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. Their record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club has also attracted many new players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior Club status in just 15 years. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club’s history - winning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League’s representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season they celebrated a Division One “double” by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. They also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition’s history to achieve this feat. To crown their success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997. In the season 1997/98 they finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard-working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Biggleswade United they played their first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve “Snowy” Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy’s other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premier Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006 2007 saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins. January 5th, 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council, and the Football Foundation they installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players’ secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. At the start of the 2013 2014 season, they appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom had enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players and under their stewardship they achieved the highest Premier Division position in nine years and first silverware in seven years winning the North Beds Charity Cup for the first time in the club’s history. In November 2014 the club took a further positive step to realise their ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of Football. Following Mick and Mark’s decision to step down at the end 2014 2015, Guillem was quick to act and recruited a new Head Coach in Cristian Colas the last five games Biggleswade United l0-3 h d2-2 a l1-0 a l6-0 a l1-5 h
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 Beccera. Cristian was assisted by former professional player, Stuart Bimson, and under their guidance the team finished in eighth spot in the Premier Division in 2017 2018 - the highest position in the club’s history. Guillem was again in search for a high-quality coach and Jimmy Martin came highly recommended by his predecessor, Colas, who worked with Jimmy at Stevenage FC Academy. Jimmy was appointed Manager in May 2018, but he resigned in October 2018 having been offered a “hard to refuse” opportunity to take up a coaching role at Watford. In the season 2019 2020 the club were sitting in a highly commendable third position in the Premier Division and under the management of Chris Devane and Trishnan Patel were hoping for a promotion play off opportunity. However, in March 2020 the season was declared Null and Void by the FA after the devastating outbreak of the Coronavirus. The club were also to learn that Chris and Tishnan had accepted the offer to work at Step 4 and departed the club at short notice. Fortunately, the club were able to call upon the services of former Head Coach Cristian Colas Cristian took the club to its highest ever position in the club’s history at the curtailment of the 20/21 season leaving us second in the table on PPG. The club applied for promotion to Step 4 but were unsuccessful. A double whammy came when the club were subjected to a lateral move to the Uhlsport United Counties League. After ten years of steady progress at Step 5 the club now faced a challenging period that would require steadfastness and perseverance as they work to rebuild a squad that will once again be challenging for promotion. The club has certainly come a long way in relatively few years, but they could not have done it without the help of a very supportive Town and District Council who clearly understand the benefits of having a community-based club in Biggleswade. The club experienced a lateral move back to the Spartan South Midlands League, which brought them back to familiar surroundings. With manager Christian Colas announcing that it would be his last season at the club, it potentially inspired the players to give their all. In the FA Cup, however, the club suffered an early exit after a heavy 4-0 defeat on the road against Gorleston. Despite this setback, they had a more successful run in the FA Vase, reaching the 4th round and securing a home tie against Coventry Sphinx. In terms of their league performance, although they only managed to win one game in their last nine matches, they still achieved a respectable 5th place finish. This suggests that the team faced some challenges towards the end of the season but managed to maintain a competitive position in the league. today’s visitors Biggleswade United

34 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Biggleswade United Saturday 11th November 2023 – MLS Western Conference Play-off – The Shell Energy Stadium, Houston Despite the efforts of British Airways to ruin my first ever trip to Houston, I was in the Shell Energy Stadium to see the Dynamo’s win a second successive penalty shoot out to progress into the next round of the MLS Play-offs. There’s been a lot of criticism for the formats of the recent Rugby and Cricket World Cups which seemed to last forever. There was a joke that some of the best English rugby players playing in the domestic game in late October weren’t even born when the tournament in France started. Whilst it isn’t strictly true for the MLS in the United States, the expansion of the end of season games has probably gone a step too far in trying to elongate the season and keep the fan interest alive. The top nine clubs in each of the two divisions, or conferences, out of 29 sides who took part in the regular season. In the Eastern Conference, FC Cincinnati finished top of the pile, with a 26 point difference to Charlotte in the final playoff spot. In the Western Conference, the top spot wasn’t decided until the final weeks of the season, with St Louis City winning the division in their first season as a MLS club. Houston Dynamo finished fourth, but only five points off top spot. Fortune favours the Football Tourist sometimes and I was in Houston for a work conference. Always trying to save my employer money, I requested to travel on Saturday, where the flights were half the price they would be on Sunday or Monday. At the time of booking there was the Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 35 possibility of a Dynamo final play-off game – all I needed was for them to lose at Real Salt Lake in the second game. And they did, losing 5-4 on penalties. My hotel was a 10 minute walk from the Shell Energy Stadium and even better, had two highly rated taprooms on its doorstep. My flight would land in Houston at 1.30pm, leaving plenty of time before the 5pm kick off. In fact, we all know that in the US just because everyone says it is a 5pm kick-off, it will be 10 minutes, or more, later before they get all the pomp and circumstance out of the way. All good, until at 5pm on Friday, 15 hours before departure, BA emailed me to say they had cancelled my flight for “service operability issues”, which often translates to “we haven’t sold enough seats so we aren’t going to run a loss making service”. They did kindly rebook me on a new flight, which now required a change in Dallas. I would arrive in Houston at 5.30pm. If I could exit the plane quickly, get a cab, tip him to ride like the wind and dump my bags at the hotel I could possibly make the start of the second half. Not ideal but at least I’d get there for some of the game. Alas, whilst the flight landed on time in Dallas, and we were boarded on the flight to Houston early, we sat on the tarmac for nearly an hour. The flight time was just 44 minutes, but we spent longer waiting to take off, then taxiing to the stand on arrival than the time in the air. The taxi driver did what he can, and Real Salt Lake did their part too, with Diego Luna equalising Corey Baird’s first half strike, taking the game to penalties. The stewards on the gate at the stadium allowed me in, although it was very surprising to see so many fans leaving before the penalties. The Shell Energy Stadium is on the edge of Downtown Houston, just a five minute walk from the Baseball stadium, Minute Maid Park. It opened in 2012 as a 22,000 capacity stadium and was designed with some unique features, none more so than the west stand which as a unique part roof thing going on, and superb views of the Houston skyline from the south stand. I simply ran into the nearest entrance and found myself right on the edge of the El Battalion, the hardcore Dynamo fans. Penalties would be taken in front of these fans, and they made it as uncomfortable as possible for the Real Salt Lake players, with bottles of water, handily passed out by a sponsor, were being thrown onto the pitch. The visitors took first, successfully, as too were the next three, making it 2-2. Luna’s spot kit was then saved, giving Dynamo the advantage, but when Nelson Quinones missed for Houston, it was 4-4 with one more to take. Daniel Musovski stepped up for the visitors and his spot kick was tipped onto the post and it bounced to safety. The weight of 17,000 fans fell on 24 year old Griffin Dorsey’s shoulders and he didn’t disappoint. The fans went wild, streamers, water, beer and shoes (!) all flew through the air. The orange dry ice pumped out from the front of the stand (sorry, no pyros here), Diesel the Fox mascot moonwalked across the penalty area and Real Salt Lake trooped off.
