2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Sawbridgeworth Town Good evening and welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all associated with Sawbridgeworth Town ahead of this evening’s cup clash. Our last game against Sawbridgeworth saw us equalise late on to gain a point in a 2-2 draw. If I have said it once I have said it a million times which is that there are no easy games at this level. Every game is always a challenge and on any given day anyone can beat anyone in this division. Whilst it was only just over a couple of weeks ago, we played Sawbridgeworth Town in the league fixture so much has happened that makes it feel like a lifetime ago. Firstly, the FC Romania debacle is something I want to address. I am incredibly gutted for all my players and my supporters for the fact that we left the game empty handed especially after giving it a right go. They are the margins in football unfortunately we were so close to 3 points that became 0 zero points in the blink of an eye. I am further to believe that there were some less than savoury scenes in the aftermath of the game. It is a shame that unfortunately people cannot win with dignity and remain humble and feel the need to behave in a poor manner. It is one of the things that I am constantly reminding our players about is the importance of behaving in the right manner post-game irrespective of result. Is it hard? You bet it is! Football is emotional, the highs of winning are addictive, the feeling of loss is the polar opposite. One bit of advice I get all the time is the need to stay balanced, never too high and never too low! It would be fair to say so far this season hasn’t gone as planned and there are a lot of things that haven’t quite gone the way we wanted them to. As the Head Coach responsibility always falls at my door and that is always the way these things go. There is still a lot of football to go and if anyone thinks that promotion is out of our reach in the middle of November then think again! In our 1st season off the back of a 5-0 hammering away at Flackwell Heath and a narrow loss the following week against eventual champions New Salamis we mounted a 14-game unbeaten run that saw us jump from 20th to 9th place. Last season when we looked dead and buried with 8 games to go, we mounted an incredible push to get us to within a grasp of promotion having been undefeated in the final 8 games! The way I see it is that this season we have had an indifferent start to say the least but now is the time to back the players and we back ourselves to get up the league. It is always easy to look for excuses and be in denial when results haven’t gone the way we were hoping. Performances needed to be better in several of those games without a doubt, HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 but my word have we had some stinking luck. No disrespect intended to anyone in the squad but whenever we get injuries they seem to be in clusters and always seem to be to integral players within the team. We have been unable to get our best side or even close to it yet. We have Tolu Ikuyinminu, Ethan Creary, Benji Crilley and Joe SellersWest nearing a return to the squad. This coupled with the new players settling into our way of playing certainly creates a cautious level of optimism. There are things that are out of our control, injuries, suspensions, unavailability, and various other factors are always things you can’t plan for. What we can do though is fight for every point and the only way we will start to build a run and momentum is by everyone being prepared to do the less glamorous things. We have match winners in the group, we have technically capable players that handle the ball very well. What we have got back to in the last couple of games is running hard and what often feels like thankless yards. We have been more combative in our play, got blocks in and been prepared to run for each other. I have a belief in this group that good times are around the corner. I have been around football for over 30 years and have experienced enough to know that I am merely a custodian of this football club. One thing I will never ever do is outstay my welcome. If we fall way off the pace and the consensus amongst the wonderful board and supporters feels like it is time for a change then rest assured, I will do the right thing and depart. There will never be a time in my tenure when I sit there and allow us to stagnate. Nobody is more disappointed with the start than I am, but we fight on. It’s not easy and the balance is completely wrong in my life. Losses stay with me relentlessly until the next game and I am guilty of over analysing every single decision. When we win, I have a couple of hours of enjoyment and then move on ready for the next battle. I was born and raised to be a winner. There are things I have had to learn to reluctantly accept. I have started to understand that for me football feels like life and death however to some of the lads, football is a hobby and they probably switch on at 8pm on a Thursday, switch off at 10pm and then switch back on for game days. We still get anything between 26-32 players every single training session without fail. That goes to show the level of commitment that players must train. I appreciate we are going through a run that is alien to us all after 2 years of a relative degree of success. I have said it before and will say it again the support you continue to give me, Kyle, Anthony, Adam and all the players is massively appreciated. I am a fan myself and get frustrated for you all. The thing I love about the club is how everyone has stuck together, and I have no doubt that with such great people that the football club will continue to thrive in the short, medium and long term, long after I am a distant memory. The stop start schedule and lack of Saturday games has been frustrating but all we can do is concentrate on what we do. Our focus is always the next game and ensure we get the next win. The only thing in football to do is concentrate on the short term I have learned that planning too far ahead is immaterial. If and I mean if we can keep our best players fit, get a settled group in a settled system then I have no doubts good things will happen. It has been an “unlucky” start to the season but as Frank Sinatra once sang “That’s life.” Enjoy tonight’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Sawbridgeworth Town Welcome everyone to this evenings Gladwish Trophy game against Sawbridgeworth Town. A distraction from the league? No not really, rather an important fixture in ensuring we continue to jell as a team. A few weeks back the two teams shared the spoils in a tight 2-2 game in the league. It did not look like our day, but we managed to show real character in coming back from two down. I’m still trying to work out why we conceded a penalty, but in the bigger scheme of things it was a competitive game with both teams deserving of something from the game. In recent weeks we have struggled to get any real momentum with gaps in the fixture list and a very long injuries roster. I’m pleased to say that there are real signs that this is changing. Whilst results have been difficult to swallow, we have deserved more from games and performances have been hugely encouraging. I missed the game against FC Romania, a result that was illustrative of ‘you don’t always get what you deserve’ and was disappointed to hear the reports of what ensued after the game. Probably enough has been said on this matter, but I know we as a club are committed to getting our own house in order. However, I will commend the actions of our stewards, who I’m told were exemplary in trying to diffuse a volatile situation. Volunteers are the life blood of any non-league club, and they certainly do not deserve to be verbally and physically threatened. As a rule, I attend Thursday training sessions, with last Thursday being no exception. It’s encouraging to report the large numbers who attend, the intensity, and the technical input from the coaching staff. There is tremendous spirit amongst the squad with the newer players now fully integrated, and several key players returning from injury. Selection looks like it’s going to a positive headache for Joe. Cutting to the chase, we do really need to be putting together a real run of results in the league, and I fully expect the boys to do this. Anecdotal reports of clubs at a higher level who struggle to get more than half a dozen at training convince me that we have something special at this club. I counted 24 at our Thursday training session! A few reflections on last Tuesday’s game against Stotfold. A soft penalty being the difference between the teams. With key players missing we acquitted ourselves admirably and contributed to what I thought was a very entertaining game. A draw would have been accepted by Partnerships Neil Barker 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Sawbridgeworth Town Established in 1897 by members of Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club, Sawbridgeworth Football Club embarked on their journey with an inaugural friendly match held on Pishiobury Park, a sizable expanse of common land located to the southern region of the Town. As the new century unfolded, the club became part of the East Herts league and subsequently relocated to Great Hyde Hall. During this period, they participated in the Stortford League and established their headquarters at the White Lion Hotel, situated in the heart of the town. Following the conclusion of the First World War, Sawbridgeworth Football Club moved once again, this time to their new home situated adjacent to the Hand & Crown Public House. The venue quickly gained popularity and hosted numerous local cup finals, becoming a focal point for football enthusiasts in the area. This era marked a significant chapter in the club’s history, as they continued to grow and leave their mark on the local football scene. In 1930, Sawbridgeworth made their move to their current ground. Initially referred to as Cambridge Road, the venue underwent significant changes, including the development of a housing estate and the establishment of a new entrance. Considering these transformations, the ground was renamed Crofters End. This new identity accompanied the club as they continued their footballing endeavours. Following the conclusion of the Second World War, Sawbridgeworth embarked on a new chapter by joining the Spartan League, which provided them with their first taste of seniorlevel football. However, their stint in the Spartan League did not yield the desired success, prompting the club to reunite with the Stortford League. Despite the setback, the club remained determined to navigate their path in local football, seeking further opportunities to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. In 1975, after changing their name to Sawbridgeworth Town, the football club experienced a significant milestone with the construction of a new clubhouse. This development prompted the club to reapply for Senior status, subsequently leading to their inclusion in the esteemed Essex Senior League. Over the following years, the club focused on enhancing their facilities, making steady improvements to the ground. Notably, floodlights were erected, enabling the Robins to partake in additional cup competitions and evening games, broadening their scope of participation. In the 1980-81 season, Sawbridgeworth Town achieved their most notable performance in the FA Vase. They advanced to the third-round, where they were narrowly defeated by Kempston Rovers with a score of 2-1. Interestingly, this scoreline mirrored the outcome of the initial match between the two teams, which had been abandoned during extra time and subsequently replayed. Furthermore, Sawbridgeworth Town experienced successful league campaigns in the 1992-93 and 1994-95 seasons, finishing as runners-up. Their strong performances during these years highlighted the team’s competitive spirit and ability to contend for top positions within the league.
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Sawbridgeworth Town In more recent times, Sawbridgeworth Town Football Club has undergone expansion by establishing a thriving junior setup. This initiative caters to the youth of the town, starting from the U7s side and extending up to the U11s. Additionally, the club boasts a competitive Ladies section, further diversifying its offerings. These complementary units, consisting of the junior teams and the Ladies section, operate alongside the club’s Senior Side and Reserves, collectively operating under the umbrella title of Sawbridgeworth Town. This comprehensive approach showcases the club’s commitment to fostering football talent across various age groups and genders, solidifying their status within the local football community. In the 05/06 season, Sawbridgeworth Town experienced a notable level of success across their teams. The senior side achieved a significant triumph by clinching the Herts Charity Shield. The Reserves showcased their prowess and determination, emerging as champions of their respective league. The Ladies side also made impressive strides, reaching the play-offs. Overall, it was a season marked by accomplishments and commendable performances from all levels of the club, exemplifying their commitment to excellence and their collective drive to succeed. In the 2007/2008 season, Richard Branchflower assumed the role of First Team manager, ushering in an era of fresh possibilities for Sawbridgeworth Town Football Club. This transition marked an exciting change of direction, as the club embraced a completely new management structure, poised to guide them towards a promising future. The intention behind this transformative move aligned with the vision set forth by chairman Steve Day, emphasizing the importance of total integration among the Youth, Reserve, and First Team squads. The objective was to foster a seamless connection and unified approach across all levels of the club. However, Richard Branchflower eventually resigned from his position later in 2008, prompting a new chapter for the club’s management. Stepping into the role, Peter Wickham and Kevin Shuttleworth took the reins, assuming the responsibility of leading the team and steering them towards continued progress. This managerial transition represented another significant development in the club’s journey, as they navigated the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. In 2012, Peter Wickham commenced his fourth year as the manager of Sawbridgeworth, accompanied by Marc Das as the Assistant Manager. DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 season brought about a positive addition to the senior setup with the introduction of Steve Pridmore as the Senior Reserve Manager and Kevin Shuttleworth as the Senior First Team Coach. The club’s focus remained steadfast on the development and progression of players through the ranks. A significant step in this direction was the integration of the U18 team into the senior setup, which had already shown promising results. During the latter part of the 2010s, Sawbridgeworth Town enjoyed a period of success, consistently achieving top ten finishes between the 2013- 14 and 2017-18 seasons. Notably, their performances in the league were accomplished despite facing point deductions in the 2016-17 season. In the season prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, Sawbridgeworth Town concluded their campaign by securing the 18th position in the table. Although they occupied a lower rank, it is worth mentioning that they finished a comfortable 13 points ahead of the relegation-threatened Barkingside. Following the resumption of football after the pandemic, Sawbridgeworth Town faced ongoing challenges during the 2021-22 season. The team found themselves locked in a difficult battle, ultimately finishing 19th out of 21 teams in the league. Their position was precarious, as they narrowly escaped relegation by a mere two points. The fate of Sawbridgeworth Town hung in the balance until the final game of the season, where they needed St Margaretsbury to suffer a loss. St Margaretsbury were soundly defeated 6-1 by Redbridge. Meanwhile, the Robins displayed a dominant performance at their home ground, Crofters End, securing a convincing 4-1 victory over West Essex. This crucial win secured their Essex Senior League status for another season. In the 2022-23 season, Sawbridgeworth Town found themselves in a situation that mirrored the previous year, finishing in the bottom three of their league. Despite comfortably securing a 10-point lead over Clapton, they expected to continue competing in the Essex Senior League for another season. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when the FA announced the league allocations. Sawbridgeworth Town was laterally moved from the Essex Senior League, where they had been competing since 1976, to the Spartan South Midlands League. This lateral shift had repercussions for the club, resulting in the departure of certain players, staff, and volunteers. The change in league affiliation meant that some individuals chose to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Additionally, in early June 2023, Sawbridgeworth Town faced another setback when their joint manager, Kieran Amos, departed to take a coaching role at the Isthmian Premier League club, Bishop’s Stortford. This left Ben Taylor in charge as the sole manager heading into the new season. These changes signalled a period of transition and adaptation for the club, as they prepared to compete in a new league and navigate the adjustments that came with it. The club will need to regroup, reorganize, and establish a new foundation to face the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead in their new footballing environment. today’s visitors Sawbridgeworth Town

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 Originating from our Wildcats program, the U10s Lionesses are a team, passionately embracing football and absorbing valuable lessons from each game. Witnessing their remarkable progress over the past 3-4 months has been truly inspiring. This weekend, the girls displayed an astonishing performance, confidently expressing themselves on the ball with an unwavering never-give-up attitude. I take great pride in contributing to the initiation of the girls’ section within the club. From having no girls’ teams, we are now set to launch a brand-new U9s side next weekend, and I’m excited about the U10s, U14s, and U18s teams entering their first season. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Sears Electric for sponsoring the match kits, First Choice Carpets & Flooring for sponsoring the rain jackets, and RJM Coaching for joining us in enhancing the coaching side for the U10s girls. youth COACH Wayne Upton 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

36 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Sawbridgeworth Town Sunday 22nd October 2023 Regionalliga Nord – Stadion Hoheluft It’s been a while since I’ve been able to sneak a game in whilst travelling for work – blame global event organisers who schedule conferences I need to attend outside the relevant domestic seasons. But finally, I had a chance to combine the two, heading to Hamburg for a few days – I just needed the fixtures to fall in line with my travel plans. There were certainly enough fixtures in and around the city on Sunday, starting from 10.30am, extending through the afternoon and early evening. Alas, the Hamburg had played on Saturday, St Pauli were away so I’d have to dip into some of the extensive lower league pyramid for my fix. I didn’t want to be greedy, nor forget why I was in Hamburg in the first place, but unable to check into my hotel room until after 3pm meant I had to do something, and fortunately that something was virtually on my doorstep. Back at home I have drawn my active football watching line at Step 6 of the English game, but I had no clue what level I was watching in my first game. I think that the Kreisliga Hamburg 6 sits within my level of tolerance, but if not, I can claim an accepted exception based on the ground. A caged 3G isn’t my idea of a fun watching experience but when the ground is in the shadow of the Millerntor Stadium, home of St Pauli and the remarkable Feldstrasse Bunker, a 35-metre-high structure that was designed to house 18,000 during WW2. Today it is now an apartment complex, overlooking the home of St Pauli, where their 4th team were taking on HSV Bambek-Uhlenhorst III. Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 37 A five-minute walk up the road and it was time for game 2 – a tasty Bezirksliga Hamburg Süd game between VfL Hammonia and FC Bingöl Hamburg, at the Sportsplatz Sternschanze. Again, another caged 3G but overlooked by a superb turret structure. But these games were mere appetisers for the main course, the Regionalliga Nord game between FC Teutonia 05 and Blau-Weiss Lohne. The Regionalliga is the regionalised fourth tier of German football. Above are famous names such as Dynamo Dresden, 1860 Munich and 1.FC Saarbrücken. Below it’s a far more local affair in the Oberliga. Whilst attendances at step 3 are a respectable 8,100 on average, at step four it drops to around 1,500, so there was little surprise there wasn’t a queue to buy tickets when I arrived at Stadion Hoheluft, home of SC Victoria, as well as tenants FC Teutonia Altona-Ottensen and St Pauli’s reserves. Teutonia’s linage is complicated and not one to try to explain without pieces of string and lots of sticky notes. Suffice to say that their name gives some clue to the various mergers over time. The club were awarded a place in the restructuring of Step 4 back in 2020 but by their own admission, were still a long way off being ready to take the next step, averaging around 500 fans in the 17,000-capacity stadium. Ten Euros for a ticket, five for a beer and three for a sausage. Whatever happened now on the pitch was a bonus, and we didn’t have to wait long before top scorer in the season so far Ole Wohlers netted after just three minutes. I’d wandered round to take my position on the terrace, wide and steep steps which had manicured grass which would send the stadium assessors in England into apocalyptic fits. The home support was gathered in the main stand and a small, elevated patio area but no hardcore/ ultras style fans, which is unusual in Germany. BW Lohne equalised to silence in the 10th minute when Emanuel Mirchev turned the ball into his own net from a corner. Seven minutes later AffamefunaMichael Ifeadigo restored the home side’s lead with an effort from the edge of the box. I took my place in the main stand for the second half, a wonderful structure with a wooden timbered roof and a glitterball. Perfect for the hardcore, German techno-rock pumping out the speakers as the teams re-emerged. Teutonia extended their lead, Lohne hit back before two late goals from the home side gave the final score a slightly generous 5-2 look. It was an odd spectating experience – almost as if the fans were going through the motions. Perhaps it was normal for this level or just a Sunday afternoon thing? Either way, one short bus ride later and I slipped back into the working world, football tourism would take a back seat for a few weeks.
