2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Aylesbury Vale Dynamos Good evening and welcome to the management, players, and supporters of Aylesbury Vale Dynamos ahead of this evening’s season opener. I am immensely pleased to write those words “season’s opener”. I have said it a number of times but I’ll say it again nothing beats that competitive edge and need to win 3 points. Pre-season serves a purpose in terms of building base fitness levels and preparing for the season opener, but nothing comes close to the need to win 3 points. Since taking the job, tonight will be my 5th meeting with Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. The 1st season in charge saw us lose 2-0 in our 2nd game in charge, a game in which we played well. The following game in January a late stoppage time equaliser denied us the 3 points. Last season saw us pick up 6 points over the 2 games but both games were tough encounters and I have no doubts that tonight will be, yet another closely fought game. No matter how pre-season has gone you never quite know just how well you have prepared probably until the end of September. I am naturally delighted that we can commence our season on home soil and with home support. The key thing we want on and off the pitch this season is intensity. As supporters you play a critical role in driving that intensity. We were incredibly grateful as a group last season to have had so many special moments at Creasey Park. This season there is a pressure on us all and that is driven solely by me. You will know by now I despise mediocrity and that Step 5 mindset of just turning up. Our need to retain a group of players and winners that we felt could take us forward was critical for the forthcoming season. The league is going to be tough; I don’t hide from that fact. I go into the season filled with cautious optimism. We have a settled squad of players that know each other, they understand the dynamic of the club and buy into the key ethos and values that represents. We lead the way off the field on so many different facets of what makes us such a unique club. Our programme, social media platforms, podcasts and player care is the best around without any question in my mind. The players are aware of that level of care from so many wonderful people off the field that ensures they have the support they need and why they have shown tremendous loyalty to us. The off-field shenanigans at Step 5 this close season have been incredible. I am so pleased our football club conducts itself with dignity and doesn’t draw attention to ourselves the way some other clubs do. This season is all about improvement on last season. I am a big advocate of the HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 Kaizen mindset and the desire for a cycle of continuous improvement. Each of our players are better for the experience attained last season. Hindsight continues to be a superb tool for us as coaches and players. The lessons learned last season are invaluable for us all. It is imperative that we heed those lessons and use them to our advantage this season. The beneficial thing with last season’s shortcomings was that the players have a much greater understanding of where we fell short. We have ensured during the summer months that we have got a squad that has enough depth to ensure we can stick to our way of playing. Injuries unfortunately have already hindered us this pre-season. We have lost Kyle Davison-Gordon for the season. We also start the season without the influential Benji Crilley and Kelvin OseiAddo who came back sharp like he did last season. All 3 players are big misses and there is no question about that. Benji Crilley is nearing full fitness and it will be fantastic to have him back. Kelvin OseiAddo will be back sooner that initially 1st feared. All 3 are great lads and will be badly missed this evening. The positive out of that is that we have Luke Williams and Dylan Baker that have done so well in pre-season that ensures we have excellent players in the position filled by Kyle Davison-Gordon. Benji Crilley was outstanding especially towards the back end of last season and was instrumental in our 8-game unbeaten run. We are fortunate we have some excellent depth in midfield which cushions the blow of losing a player of Benji’s magnitude. Kyle Faulkner, Danny Webb, and Joe Sellers-West ensure we have excellent firepower at the front end of the pitch in the absence of Kelvin. We have Sean Immanuel returning and Nimmi making continuous progress, we have strong options. The league is never won by 11 players. The squad play a critical part in the overall success of the season. We need to ensure 1st and foremost every single week that we keep 11 players on the pitch. Last season we had moments that left us with 10 men which always creates a mountain at these levels. Had we have kept 11 players on the pitch at Ardley and at home to Potton I have absolutely no doubts we would have been 4 points better off at the end of the season. I am excited as I know the directors, coaches, players, and supporters are. I have been waiting for our squad to emerge onto the Creasey Park for the season opener the same way a child awaits Christmas Day. I am excited for our supporters to see our players again and am excited for another superb atmosphere. I am excited and hopeful that we will be hearing Matt Carrington’s booming voice on the microphone shouting “GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL for Dunstable Town”. Welcome back to our incredible Regiment ahead of this season. Every 3 points and cup win this season is for all of us that live Dunstable Town. We aim to bring smiles to faces, heart racing moments, togetherness, passion, and a common goal which is to continue with a club that makes us all proud on and off the pitch. I am sure there will be the odd disappointment in there and some interesting post-match podcasts. Whatever happens this season let’s all make sure that “In spite of it all, life is beautiful.” Joe Deeney

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 I’m writing this shortly after the Barnet game, due to printing deadlines, and am enjoying the rain from my Bournemouth hotel bedroom! Welcome to 23/24, and what a season it promises to be! Complacency is something this club does not suffer from. Both on and off the pitch we are determined to be the best that we can be. The retention of most of last season’s squad augers well, and we are hopeful that we will be dining at the top table throughout the season. We’ve enjoyed a highly entertaining preseason with no lack of incident, and one or two events that I’m sure we won’t see repeated. ‘Bizarre’ would be an accurate description of some of the things we’ve witnessed. The late ‘Saint and Greavsie’ famously said, ‘it’s a funny old game’. No one who knows me will be surprised that I’d just like to shout out to my hometown team Luton Town. I was privileged to be at Wembley to witness their promotion to the Premier League. I’m not ashamed to say that I had a tear in my eye, and will equally shed more, if the Blues achieve a promotion at the end of this season. There are many components that go to making a successful team. We’re more than happy with Joe and his coaching team. There will be no stone unturned, the team will be meticulously prepared, and you can be sure there’s more than one plan up their sleeve. Your support is equally important and let’s be clear, it does not go unnoticed! Both home and away we are amongst the most vocal, if not the most vocal in the league. Your support at away grounds is second to none and has often been that proverbial ‘12th Man’. Please encourage your friends and work colleagues to give Dunstable Town a visit. We’re sure they’ll get hooked. Over the pre- season there have been many things going on ‘off the pitch’. Our commercial team has welcomed Andy Watts on board, and he’s already proving to be a great acquisition. Renewing current sponsorships and looking for new partners is a never-ending quest, and I couldn’t be more delighted with the partnership we’ve just signed with Dunstable Town Cricket Club. Both Andy and I have played for the club, Andy with no small amount of skill, myself with enthusiasm but precious little else! It’s a great club that shares our values and we’ll be sharing the details of the partnership in more detail in due course. So, in conclusion, strap yourself in, turn up the volume, and enjoy the ride, and as Andy Burrows says, ‘Come on you mighty Blues! Neil Barker Partnerships Neil Barker

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Aylesbury Vale Dynamos Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket, and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly, Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, some 200 players being registered, this also including Stocklake Ladies. In 2000 four youth teams won league and cup honours, whilst the senior team went on to win the Aylesbury District Cup, the Field Shield and ADL Premier Division runners up. At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Aylesbury Vale Dynamos United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi-professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last ‘level five’ team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters, and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. They were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, their success continued, becoming double winners winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi-final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league. the last five games Aylesbury Vale Dynamos l3-2 a l1-4 h l1-3 h w5-0 h w1-2 a
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 The 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back-room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 after ten seasons in the Southern League the club was relegated back to the South Midlands League after a difficult period for the club. Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12’s Aylesbury & District League (ADL) but went on to win the 13’s & 14’s league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football at the highest possible level. It seemed that the management changes and signings made by the new management duo of Michael East and Liam Dwyer did not have the desired impact on the team’s performance. Despite the initial expectations, the team struggled in both the FA Cup and the Vase, resulting in their elimination from both competitions. Following these disappointments, another change in management occurred in November, with Jordan King and James Green taking over the team. They brought in several former Winslow United players to improve the squad. While results did improve to some extent, the team failed to reach its full potential and only managed to secure a mid-table finish in the Spartan South Midlands Premier League. Despite the signings and changes in management, the team never seemed to find its rhythm and struggled to sustain a higher level of performance throughout the season. During the close season, the managerial transition resulted in the replacement of King and Green with Paul Batchelor. Batchelor is a familiar figure to fans, as he had previously served as a member of Ben Williams’ management team during Williams’ tenure. Furthermore, Batchelor demonstrated his managerial abilities by successfully guiding Holmer Green to safety last season. today’s visitors Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

30 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Aylesbury Vale Dynamos Every season someone, somewhere in the professional game will raise the idea of Premier League B teams being allowed to play in the English pyramid. It’s not enough for some of these B teams to be allowed to play in the Football League Trophy, a competition that is derided by most and often “attracts” record-breaking low attendances in the group stages. North of the border some Premiership sides enter their B teams into a similar competition, the Scottish Challenge Cup, but the two Old Firm clubs have been allowed to put their Under23s into the Lowland League, one of the feeder leagues into the Scottish League for a trial season. The agreement was part of a wider proposal to restructure the professional game that would see “colt” teams such as Rangers and Celtic’s Lowland League squads being accepted into the professional structure. That is still awaiting approval, with some understandable opposition to the move, which may mean the two clubs may find themselves without regular competitive football next season. Both were competing at the top end of the Lowland Table although some distance from league leaders Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic who had dropped just 10 points from 27 games and looked destined to reach the play-offs for a spot in next season’s Scottish League Two. Not that it really matters for either, as they cannot be promoted (or relegated) With a number of the sides sharing facilities with SPFL clubs, Friday night games aren’t uncommon in the Lowland League. With Alloa Athletic hosting Cove Rangers on Saturday, tenants Broomhill moved to Friday night to host Rangers B. The club were formed as BSC Glasgow back in 2014 off the back Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 of an extensive community programme and as a route into senior football for their pathway players. In the summer of 2021, Broomhill split from BSC Glasgow, retaining their place in the Lowland League, hoping to better their 4th place finish in 2021. There is a catch 22 situation when it comes to development sides. The top professional clubs have stockpiled good young players for years, often sending them out on loan for seasons at a time before releasing them when they reach 23. For many of these players they will have been at a club for ten years or more before they are released, so the club can bring in the next crop of wannabes. Most promising youngsters will have made the first team squads by the age of 21 these days and so those still waiting, do so in a strange no man’s land of Development leagues, playing against similar teams, similar players with similar futures. But for the promising players it doesn’t do them any good to be sitting on the bench come 3pm on a Saturday (or whenever they play for the TV cameras). As part of their development, they need to be playing regularly, against professional players. And herein lies the issue that clubs all the way from Step 4 upwards face. With limited resources (pitch time, coaches and even kit) many clubs can’t maintain a B/Development/U23s side which leaves a gap between players coming out of Under18s sides and first team squads. Down at Lewes we have had many promising youngsters, some of which have gone on to today be playing in the professional game such as Fin Stevens at Brentford and Ricky Aguiar at Swindon Town. They’ve stood out as 18 year olds but for a number of reasons weren’t given the chance in the first team. So, they moved away and got their chance at other clubs and worked their way up. The concept of a B team bridges the gap if they play against senior rather than junior teams. Brentford are one of the growing number of clubs that has abandoned the concept of a traditional academy, putting focus and resource into their B team which is used as a recruitment vehicle for players who have been released at the end of that U23s season. They then invest time to polish some of those unseen diamonds. For sides, like Broomhill, they use the games against Rangers and Celtic B to benchmark their progress. A win against these “elite” squads is a major feather in their caps. Whilst the technical ability of some of the full-time Rangers players was clear to see, the determination and pressing by the part-time Broomhill players made for a close game. There are clear benefits in games like this for both sides but it’s important that B sides aren’t used at the expense of legitimate progress of other sides. Is there more benefit in Arsenal U23s playing in the EFL Trophy or one of the National League sides who are in many instances on a par, or even playing/ being run at a higher level than EFL sides? Why should a professional side get priority over other clubs who have worked their way up the pyramid. Whilst this appears to be a one season experiment in Scotland, there is a danger that the league structure will be expanded for the wrong reasons, driven by a desire to placate the minority rather than thinking of the long-term impact on Scottish football in general.
