2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and everyone associated with Arlesey Town ahead of this evening’s clash. We have again gone for what feels like an eternity without a home game and now have 6 of our next 7 here at Creasey Park. Before I get into Saturday’s game and the numerous squad updates, I want to start with a thank you to you all especially over the last 6 weeks. Some may call it a transitional period, some might call it horrendous luck, some might call it poor but there is no hiding from it 4 points from the last 4 games isn’t something I will beat my chest about. I believe in football there are one of 3 states you operate in as a club. Survive, strive, or thrive. It is fair to say at every stage during our 2 years as a management team we have gone through each one of those phases. I write these notes in the early hours of Sunday morning with Saturday’s defeat fresh in my mind. In life you don’t always get what you deserve and that was certainly evident on Saturday. We deserved so much more but that is life. It is easy for us all to feel sorry for ourselves and unfortunately there are multiple reasons I believe that have contributed to struggling to find consistency and form. Our injury list is without a doubt the main issue. You are only as good as the player’s available to you. On Saturday it was painful to see Connor Coulson, Carl Knox, Benji Crilley, Kyle DavisonGordon, Luke Dunstan, Terrence Muchineripi and John Smith all injured and unavailable for selection. On top of that we have now lost Ethan Creary to a bad hamstring injury maybe we can all allow ourselves a degree of sympathy and self-pity. Whilst I think it is important, we allow ourselves to feel a degree of self-pity we must now wallow in it. Injuries are part of football, and 8 people’s disappointments are now 8 players opportunities. We welcome to the club for their home debuts Jesse Armoo, Emmanuel Gbejuade, Andrew Osei-Bonsu, James Lauder and Jake Anthony. Jesse Armoo is a player we were interested in in the summer having seen him play over the last season. Jesse is physically imposing, loves a tackle and adds composure to our midfield in possession which has been evident in his first 2 games. He has undoubted leadership skills, and we are delighted to have him. Bienvenue Jesse Le Chopper, travaille dur. We are also delighted to announce Emmanuel Gbejuade. Emmanuel joins us from Godmanchester Rovers where he shone throughout the season. Emmanuel is an exciting winger that likes to face defenders and go at people in 1v1 situations. He has form for long range goals so don’t be surprised when HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 you see the net bulge from distance. I have no doubt he will be popular with you all. Andrew Osei-Bonsu rejoins the club after a spell many years ago from Daventry Town. Andrew, I have known for many years and admired as a player. I remember him playing against me for MK Dons as an up and coming professional during my many years at Luton Town. Andrew is technically outstanding, athletically excellent, and all-round talented box to box midfielder. I absolutely have no doubts the best is still to come from Andrew. Next is another superb addition in James Lauder who joins us from Kempston Rovers and is joining for his 2nd spell at Dunstable Town. I was instantly impressed with James and his high energy, tenacity and decision making in possession. He adds quality on the ball to the midfield, his high energy output and mobility allows us to bring a different dimension in the midfield areas which will be invaluable for the coming months. He had an excellent debut week and have no doubts we will continue to improve him, and he will be a great addition. Finally, we get to see Jake Anthony in the Dunstable Town blue tonight. The word debacle gets branded a lot in football but never has a truer word been spoken when it comes to finally completing this deal. Nothing to do with clubs or players just an arbitrary rule that has prevented Jake from playing for us over the last 3 games. Jake is a proven goal scorer at this level and has delivered for Harpenden Town and Cockfosters. Jake is strong, gets a hold of the ball to bring others in and has the ideal work rate to allow us to press the game high up the pitch. I am really pleased to welcome Jake to the club and see the goals flying in. The lessons learned have been aplenty and its now about moving forward and what comes next. The biggest lesson I have learned this season is the Journey is always better than the destination. I have put a huge amount of pressure on myself, my coaches and players. What I have done is focusing on the destination and have lost sight of the here and now and haven’t enjoyed the journey enough which is sacrilege. I speak often about players getting back to their DNA, well I have had the same epiphany. Impatience is a terrible trait of mine and has led me personally to focus on the wrong direction which I believe has been counterproductive. I liken my feelings to the world-famous Route 66! It’s much easier, quicker, and more convenient to simply fly from Chicago, Illinois to California but where is the enjoyment in that? Millions and millions of people have driven that famous route consisting of 2448 miles simply for the journey. The desire to embrace famous landmarks that takes far more time but with a much greater journey and sense of purpose far outweighs the convenience of flying! That is like us now. 26 League games remain! 15 of these are at Home. Now the sole focus for us is the next game. Concentrate on the next 3 points, enjoy each game, win each game and I still fully believe we will be right in the mix come April. The support has been immense and greatly appreciated. Tring Athletic were delighted with 197 on Saturday and that is mainly due to our travelling army of supporters. A crowd of less than 200 at Creasey Park these days is often greeted with surprise. I never take support and attendances for granted, to support us is an expensive hobby and we have a great deal of gratitude for that support, long I hope may that continue. Enjoy today’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town Good evening everyone and welcome to Creasey Park for this evening’s SSML match v Arlesey Town. A special mention to Arlesey’s Secretary, Chris Sterry, who was DTFC Secretary back in the day, and who is one of my go to members of the Secretary’s Union when the vagaries and complexities of football administration baffle and perplex me to distraction. We wish Chris and all his colleagues from Arlesey an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home at the end of the evening. Thanks to all of you who travelled in large numbers again to London Lions and Tring on Wednesday & Saturday respectively. Wednesday was the third time this season that we’ve scored three goals away from home but have come away with nothing on two of those occasions. Former Arsenal U21 player Austin Lipman who scored all four of the Lions goals was the main reason why we left Rowley Lane with nothing. Tring on Saturday saw us match our opponents in every department and succumb to a last-minute goal to deny us a more than fully deserved point. Non partisan observers have pointed to Kelvin’s disallowed goal and a “last man” foul punished only with a caution. I must give special praise to all of the players, especially the new lads who have had to adapt quickly to DTFC life. Wednesday’s game meant there was no training session on Thursday to prepare for the Tring game. There was plenty of praise for James Lauder’s performance in midfield. Older supporters will remember James from his time with the Club pre-Covid, coming through the ranks of the Development Team to become a First Team regular under Gareth Jackson. There was also praise for 17 year old keeper, Sean Locke-Hart who made his debut for the Club and did himself proud with his mature and confident performance. Sean needed to be drafted into the ranks quickly to cover for Connor who was injured at London Lions & Karl Knox who remains out through injury. We wish both speedy recoveries. Another player returning to the ranks is Andrew Osei-Bonsu who a lot of you will remember from our Step 3 days. Andrew came to the Club with Peter Kioso, aged 18, after leaving MK Dons, having made his 1st team debut in the EFL Cup aged just 17. On his day, Andrew is as good as it gets at this level and higher. Undoubtedly skilful and a defender’s nightmare with his dribbling skills. I can still remember Andrew’s first half goal away at St.Neots and a shot that was so hard away at Kings Langley it shook the crossbar chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 so hard it was still shaking seconds afterwards. He’s still only 24 but has played at Step 2 for Billercay and for East Fife in Scotland & Larne in Northern Ireland. The injury curse that has disrupted Joe’s plans and preparations so significantly this season shows no signs of improving. Benji Crilley, Luke Dunstan, Kyle Davison-Gordon, Ethan Creaey, Connor Coulson, Karl Knox, John Smith all out injured along with the news that striker and last season’s joint top goal scorer Kyle Faulkner has taken up a new position outside of football which prevents him from playing have been big losses & Joe is slowly but steadily carrying out the necessary rebuild & needs all of us to fully support him. Results will turn. I have absolutely no doubt about that. And one man we hope will be part of that is Jake Anthony who is available for selection this evening following his move from AFC Welwyn. 55 goals in 112 games for Harpenden Town is a formidable record and one we all hope Jake can replicate, if not improve on here at Creasey Park. On Sunday we play Woodford Town in the 1st Round of the Isuzu FA Vase. Normal admission prices apply, but Season Ticket holders are reminded that STs cannot be used for this match, nor are complimentary League tickets distributed to the Club’s owners as part of their loyalty package. Enjoy tonight’s match. Let’s get behind Joe & the players and be loud and proud but as always respect our opponents and the match officials. See you on Sunday.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Arlesey Town Before the Second World War, Soccer was played on a local basis, and in common with many clubs in the area, Arlesey competed in the Biggleswade & District League and entered the Biggleswade Knock-out Cup. During the 1920’s, the club joined the Bedfordshire County League. Arlesey originally played at The Bury before moving to Lamb Meadow. The ground took its name from ‘The Lamb,’ a former Public House situated near the site which, for many years acted as the club’s headquarters and changing rooms. The birth of the modern era is owed to the foresight of officials of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. They purchased the premises and became landlords for the princely sum of just £500 in 1948. Playing fortunes fluctuated since the war and season 1950-51 saw the Blues finish as runners-up to Bletchley Town in the SML Premier Division. The following season the 1st XI lifted the championship crown, and the second string were crowned SML Division Two champions with the Youth team winning three trophies. The 1952-53 season began with a North Beds Charity Cup final win over Biggleswade Town and ended with a second successive championship win. The 1950’s had seen the Blues compete in the South Midlands and Parthenon Leagues. Season 1968-69 saw one of Arlesey’s favourite sons in charge of team affairs; Roland Legate, who took the helm as player-manager and during his 4 year spell, he took the Blues to a league runners-up spot. The start of the 1975-76 season saw Legate return and the trophies came with him. Three Hinchingbrooke Cup successes, one Beds Senior Cup, the Biggleswade KO Cup twice and the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy once. Supporting the Executive Committee’s wish to cross the pyramid to the United Counties League. With two indifferent terms in the UCL, Arlesey lifted the Premier Division in season 1984-85. During the late 1980’s the Blues won the United Counties League, Premier Division Cup, and a Beds Premier Cup final appearance against Luton Town. During the 1991 centenary year in the blues lifted the South Midlands Floodlight Cup with a fine victory over fellow U.C.L. side Irthlingborough Diamonds. With changes to support and playing staff for 1994/5 the results exceeded expectations. The South Midlands League championship was won with a record 107 points, but even this memorable feat was eclipsed when Arlesey Town defeated Oxford City at Wembley Stadium in front of over 13,000 spectators to lift the F.A. Carlsberg Vase. The 1997-98 team were unable to keep pace and their championship aspirations soon evaporated. An FA Vase 3rd round exit occurred in Cornwall’s Porthleven in December and the Blues’ last chance of picking up any silverware disappeared at the hands of arch-rivals Stotfold who loosened Arlesey’s grip on the Hinchingbrooke Cup with a 2-0 semifinal victory.
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town After a lengthy campaign the club finally received planning permission for a new ground just a few hundred yards along Hitchin Road. The first season at the new Hitchin Road ground began with nine straight victories as Ironton’s men stormed to the top of the table. With their ground grading Arlesey Town were promoted to the Ryman Isthmian League Division Three. A magnificent first season in the Ryman League, saw the club lose just two league matches (one at home and one away) as they raced away to win the Third Division Championship scoring an Isthmian League record of 138 goals and the Blues also gained the record of being the first club to attain a 100+ goal difference in the league’s history. Season 2003/2004 saw Arlesey Town in the national limelight following a fantastic run to the last 16 of the FA Trophy defeating on the way, Hayes from the Ryman Premier Division and Dagenham & Redbridge from the Nationwide Conference league. This resulted in an away game with Exeter City who had just been relegated from the football league. Although losing the game the blues gained respect with an outstanding performance. Darren Hay took on the team management during the early stages of 2006/2007 season, with Mike Brooks as the assistant manager and coach and they put together a very young and eager team for the coming 2007 campaign. This included both experienced senior players supporting by young players who broke into the first team towards then end of the previous season. With a completely new management structure in place and a new Management team, of: Gary King Director of Football, Lee Cowley Manager, Zema Abbey Assistant Manager, and Darren Staniforth as Coach, Arlesey played the season with renewed style and passion, finishing the season in 9th place in the League and getting through to the firstround proper of the F.A. Trophy and lifting the Beds Senior Cup in the last game of the season. In 2010-11 Arlesey were in the top echelons all season finished in dramatic style as they won 10 games on the bounce, had 9 points deducted on the day they thought they had won the league and then beat near neighbours Hitchin Town on Hitchin’s own ground on their last game of the season to be finally crowned League Champions. the last five games Arlesey Town l0-2 h w1-0 h w1-0 h l2-0 a l0-5 h
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 This was followed soon after by beating Biggleswade Town to retain the Beds Senior Cup at Kenilworth Road ground to give Arlesey a League and Cup Double and see them promoted to the new Evo-Stick Southern League Premier Division. The first season in the Premier League was seen as a settling in period targeting staying up and a good cup run, both ambitions were achieved with the club reaching the F.A. Cup 1st round proper for the first time in their history. The second season again saw a good FA Cup run that went again to the 1st round proper before it ended at the Ricoh Stadium against Coventry City. The season finished on a knife edge as Arlesey missed out on the play-off spot of the Premier Div by just a single point. Although promotion was narrowly missed the Red Insure League Cup was won in a 2-legged final v Frome to bring home another piece of silverware. The club appointed Chico Ramos to try to push the club forward again. His reign had been blighted by the COVID pandemic with two uncompleted seasons although some progress seemed to be happening on the pitch. Also, off the pitch saw ex player Dave Kitson come back to the club he started at as Chairman and a complete refurbishment of the clubhouse and dressing rooms. Although progress was made a further change in management came in December 2021 as Martin Standen was appointed to take charge of the team. Martin left the club after a short tenure and skipper Adam Randall took the reins until the end of the season. With the new season underway, Nick Brown was appointed as the club’s manager, bringing a new direction to the team. Their journey began with disappointing exits from the Vase against MK Irish and in the FA Cup against Barton Rovers after a replay. However, they managed to secure a 2-1 win over Barton in the Beds Senior Cup, sealing revenge. In the County Cup, they suffered a crushing 5-0 defeat at the hands of Bedford Town, and a similar fate awaited them in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy, exiting in the quarterfinal against Step 6 Rugby Borough with a 5-0 scoreline. Their fate in the league hung in the balance until the last match against Hoddesdon Town, where the winner would potentially avoid relegation. Despite Hoddesdon taking an early lead, Matt Gilbert scored his first senior goal to equalize on the 30th minute. Two more goals from Tom Millet and Rory Bubsy secured a victory for the Blues, saving them from relegation and sending Hoddesdon Town down instead. In the current season, Arlesey Town experienced a tough setback in the FA Cup, losing 5-1 to Sawbridgeworth Town. They also encountered controversy when their match against Potton United was postponed. On a more positive note, they advanced to the First Round of the FA Vase with a 1-0 victory at home against Penn & Tylers Green, a Step 6 team competing in the Combined Counties League Division One. today’s visitors Arlesey Town

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 29 dunstable town fc walking football On Saturday 16th Sept our walking football team took part in a tournament at Flitwick Leisure Centre consisting of 5 teams, including a team from Tottenham Hotspur. The team was made up of 9 current players, Steve Broughton, Tony Dunne, Terry Emm, Dave Golding, Adam Lew, Steve Neate, Ian Pegrum, Ian Steele & Dave Streeton. The set up was to play four 15 minute games and then the final would be between the top 2 teams. Speaking to other teams beforehand, it was clear that they all competed on a regular basis and our team were only competing in their second competition. The first game went well, against Maulden Orange. We were subject to a couple of penalties and took our time to start to play together against well established opponents. We fought well and did hit the back of the net, with a goal from Ian Pegrum, but unfortunately lost the game 5-1. The second game was an improvement, we were against Tottenham Hotspur this time and they were a formidable opponent. We played well and kept them at bay and scored again, with a second goal in the competition from Ian Pegrum, but again ended up losing 3-1. The third game was against Maulden, and we were starting to find our feet. Both teams had chances. There were saves from both keepers, we were unlucky not to score on several occasions, but the final result was a 1-0 defeat. The final game was against M&J Kempston. We took the lead from an amazing goal from Ian Pegrum, receiving the ball from the keeper and taking it right up the other end and smashing it past the keeper. We scored 2 further goals with some lovely football from Dave Golding and Dave Streeton and hit the post twice, but alas we couldn’t get the result we wanted and lost 4-3. Every player gave their very best and their determination to compete with well established teams and players was excellent. We have another tournament coming up in October and are looking to continue to compete in more. Many thanks to ASDA in Dunstable who sponsor our kit and a thanks to Ian Bateman for all he does for our team.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 SSMFL premier division match report The recent League fixture between Harpenden Town and Dunstable Town drew a substantial crowd of 427 spectators, thanks in part to the significant presence of Dunstable fans who made the journey to support their team. The match marked a historic occasion for Harpenden Town as it was the first competitive game played on their new 4G surface. The newly developed facility boasts modern terracing, stands, and hardstanding supporter areas, providing a state-of-the-art platform for the town’s players to showcase their talents. The backdrop of the scorching hot weather added an extra layer of intensity to the contest. However, for Dunstable Town, the outcome of the game was a step back from their recent form, where they had managed to secure seven points from the previous three matches. The frustration and disappointment were palpable, and these emotions were evident in the candid post-match interview with Joe Deeney, the team’s manager. In his typical fashion, Joe acknowledged Harpenden’s welldeserved victory and praised their performance on the day. Still, he couldn’t help but express his bewilderment at the inconsistencies plaguing his team, likening them to a complex puzzle that is challenging to solve. The match began with Dunstable creating promising opportunities in the early minutes, but they failed to convert them into goals. Unfortunately, their missed chances came back to haunt them as Harpenden Town took the lead just ten minutes into the game. What followed was a competitive halfhour of play where both teams showed their mettle, but just before the halftime whistle, Harpenden Town managed to extend their lead, making it 2-0. The second half of the match didn’t bring the desired change in fortunes for Dunstable Town. Harpenden Town continued to capitalize on their momentum, adding two more goals to their tally. The final scoreline reflected a somewhat one-sided contest, which might have been harsh on Dunstable considering the effort they put in and the chances they created. Despite the disappointing result for Dunstable Town, it was clear that the day belonged to Harpenden Town. Not only did they secure a convincing victory on the pitch, but the atmosphere in the newly developed facility was undoubtedly electric, with the large crowd showing their support for the home side. In conclusion, the League fixture between Harpenden Town and Dunstable Town was a historic occasion, marked by the unveiling of Harpenden’s impressive HELP USENSUREMATCHES ARE SAFE AND ENJOYABLE FOR ALL LOVE FOOTBALL. 38 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town Saturday 6th May 2023 3pm – Scottish League Two – New Dundas Park, Bonnyrigg There are calls for the National League in England to become League Three, and an additional promotion and relegation spot awarded. The National League has a dearth of former Football League sides in, some on their way down (Scunthorpe United and Torquay United for instance are now playing in The National League North and South, respectively), whilst others are very much on the up. Wrexham and Notts County’s titanic battle for promotion last season showing the rude health and benefit of a spell outside the Football League. But in Scotland it is still very much a closed shop. Currently, only one side is potentially relegated from the Scottish Professional Football League structure come the end of the season. Potentially, because whoever finished bottom of League Two has a second (and third) chance with a two-legged play-off against the side that emerges victorious from the Champions playoff between the Highland and Lowland Leagues. In recent years there has been some notable successes of teams coming up and carrying on the momentum. FC Edinburgh, Cove Rangers and Kelty Hearts have all won subsequent promotions, having replaced sides like East Stirlingshire, Brechin City and Berwick Rangers. But this season has been slightly more challenging for Bonnyrigg Rose who replaced Cowdenbeath a year ago. With just two games to go at the end Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39 of last season, Bonnyrigg were one of three sides that could still finish bottom. Having been bottom of the league for 10 games in the early part of 2023, they climbed off the foot of the table, only to return to it in the second to last game after bottom side Albion Rovers took an unlikely lead at East Fife. Fortunately, the home side turned it around in the second half, but it still meant that they had to beat Elgin City, themselves one of three sides that could have been relegated, on the final day of the season to be sure of safety. Whilst there would be some eyes and ears on Albion Rovers home game against Champions Stirling Albion, the maths was simple enough. Three points and it didn’t matter what happened elsewhere. Despite a challenging first season in the SPFL, the fans had flocked to New Dundas Park, with an average attendance of over 900 during the season. Over 2,000 arrived for the visit of Elgin City, more than at any game in League’s One and Two. The first half was tense. The home side couldn’t afford to make a mistake, so were relatively cautious in their approach. A goal-less first 45 minutes in both their game and the one at Albion Rovers didn’t help settle any nerves in the crowd. One goal in either game could decide the fate of the season and fortunately that goal came in the 49th minute, when striker Keiran McGachie hooked in a loose ball from a corner to give Rose the lead. Three minutes later Albion Rovers took the lead. On the hour mark the game, and Bonnyrigg’s fate was sealed. McGachie was on hand to turn the ball home from 12 yards and celebrated as if he had won the cup final, ripping off his shirt and parading in front of the covered terrace. Rose were staying up. Albion scored a second, but it was irrelevant. Gray added a third for Rose and they would be dancing in the streets of Bonnyrigg for days to come. Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic can look forward to another season in SPFL and rewarding their fantastic supporter base. While Albion Rovers faced a two-legged play off against Lowland winners The Spartans. Following a 1-1 draw at Ainslie Park in Edinburgh, the Lowland League champions went into the return leg at Cliftonhill as the underdogs, but backed by a noisy away support, they took the lead on 15 minutes when Blair Henderson netted from the penalty spot. Albion Rovers pushed for an equaliser but their caused was harmed by Blair Malcolm’s red card on 76 minutes and could not find a leveller, meaning they are relegated and will play Lowland League football next term. Spartans’ victory means that the city of Edinburgh will have four teams in the senior leagues next season, as they join Edinburgh City, Hearts, and Hibs in the main SPFL set-up.
