2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Real Bedford Welcome to Rob, the coaching team, players, supporters, and everyone associated with Real Bedford ahead of tonight’s league game. I have no doubts Real Bedford will be looking to start where they left off in our last fixture in the cup where we were comprehensively beaten by them. In all fairness my players were taken to school and there are times when you must acknowledge on the day the class divide was obvious. It is imperative we learn and learn quickly from the events of that day. We got off to a very good start and found ourselves 1-0 up but by half time we were well and truly out of the game. It would be very easy tonight to resign ourselves to the mindset of “let’s stay in it” especially after our recent form but that’s not going to be the case. You deserve more as supporters, and frankly myself, Durcs and Anthony deserve more than we have received of late. Those of you who have got to know me well over the years know I am honest with people; I say it how it is, and I pride myself on being more mentally resilient than any other man I’ve ever met. I am proud of the adversities I have personally overcome in my life. What I don’t really talk about is when things are tough for me. My culture of where I was born and raised when we struggle emotionally, we get told “get on with it” and that is how I still operate today and don’t ever see that changing. I am very fortunate that I love life and all the things I am lucky to have. I have a wonderful wife, fantastic children, a great job that I really enjoy, and I am healthy. There are so many people at Dunstable Town, Andrew, Neil, Matt, Lee, Julian, Jackie, The Lewington’s, Peter, Cupcake, Chris, Craig, Nick, Mark, Liam, Dan, all my supporters, Brad, Abby, Scottie, Dean, Ian Bateman, Wayne Upton, Andy and so many more that I may have missed (apologies) that I love. Despite all the love my primary emotions now are suffering, guilt and frustration. This is purely down to our on-field antics this season. I spend far too much time self-analysing and self-criticising. The group in terms of personnel hasn’t been radically different from last season but I’ve finally cracked it. The 3 problems this season have been ATTITUDE, ATTITUDE and ATTITUDE! We have shown such a poor attitude as a collective. It has been like a pandemic! A lot came back in poor shape which didn’t help and more worryingly the entitlement is astonishing. We have moved several on that will naturally try to absolve themselves but were massive contributors. Unfortunately, despite moving some of them out there was a residue left that seems to have affected many others. My players and I stress the words “MY PLAYERS” QUIT TOO EASILY, BLAME OTHERS and HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 NEVER TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY bar a very small few. Do I think this would be the same if Terrence Muchineripi, Luke Dunstan, and Kyle Davison-Gordon were fit to play? No chance. They would set the examples required to get us out of this mess. How do you stop a pandemic? You remove the infected and bring in better attitudes. We have been beaten on ability this season in some games without a doubt but too many points this season have been dropped due to an inability to fight, scrap and be hard to play against. 15 goals conceded in 3 games tells me there is a fundamental problem. I can accept (to a degree) incompetence however I will never accept and tolerate denial and complete delusion. Too many car journeys have been made this season home to my family in a daze and I have spent too much time questioning myself when the harsh reality is that players need to do the same! Do my players suffer? No, I don’t think most of them do. I feel we have conned our fantastic supporters this season through our lack of professionalism and complete disregard for sacrifice. I have suffered all season and so have people close to me. My wife Erica has had to deal with my silent moods on a Saturday night that has now also become a Tuesday night. As supporters you have been fantastic. To clap us off after 2 recent hidings shows a compassion towards me and my players that we don’t deserve. We have let you down and I would fully understand abuse and beer being thrown at us. The beer can’t possibly be that good to clap us off after such a woeful season. Tonight’s group will be a very different look and a group that I can hang my hat on will compete at the very least. Alex Butt deserves his opportunity as does Sean Locke-Hart who have been absolutely outstanding in training and now the time is right to give them the chance. Charlie Gilbert I am certain will add loads to our group. Carl Knox is available for this Saturday, and I am delighted about that. Knoxy is a top man and someone who I have the utmost time for. Reliable, honest and someone who has had horrendous luck this season but what a Goalkeeper we have returning. We will need to play well tonight no doubts about it, but we need to get the basics right! Little things to some people but everything to me. Running until your lungs burn, your legs full of lactic acid and feeling sick. I do that 6 times a week in the gym and I am nearly 40! I don’t see that replicated enough by the group. I never expect anything from others that I don’t expect from myself. We have been a soft touch this season which angers me more than anything. We were talking about it as a coaching group last week and were all in agreement that the 3 best tackles of the season so far have been delivered by coaches and that is no joke! The last 2 games at Arlesey Town and MK Irish have been nothing short of disastrous. I was talking to one of my old players last week away at MK Irish after the game and I think my point was really personified and he said one thing that really resonated with me. He said, “This isn’t a Joe Deeney team”. The comment was not said in malice and nor had that individual been drinking alcohol. It was said with a love and affection. The hardest thing about that comment was it was true. We have 12 games left and all I want to see is my team run hard, work hard, make tackles, take shots, put the opposition under pressure with and without the ball and do the things we have been known for. I want the suffering for our supporters to end and selfishly want my own personal suffering to finish. Thank you so much for all your support and enjoy tonight’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Real Bedford A very warm welcome to Real Bedford FC, their committee, supporters, players, and coaching staff to Creasey Park for this evening’s SSMFL Premier Division League match. We hope they enjoy their evening with us irrespective of the final score & wish them a safe journey home at the final whistle. My thanks to all of you for coming out this evening to watch the mighty Blues take on the League leaders in what I hope will be a good game of football and advert for the Spartan League. A week ago, we travelled up the A5 to Bletchley to play MK Irish in what was another tough encounter. Ricardo Green’s stunning drive gave us a deserved lead on 19 minutes and for the next twenty minutes I thought we matched the home side. But just like watching a tv show you’ve seen before and know the script backwards we managed to shoot ourselves well and truly in the foot. There must have been at least 50 – 60 DTFC fans there on Tuesday night and I can only humbly thank you for your incredible, loyal support. All of you who stayed around the tunnel 20 minutes after the final whistle to clap the players off the pitch you deserve the plaudit of the best supporters in the League. Supporting the boys when they’re winning is as easy as pie but keeping that support going when performances and results aren’t happening is another kettle of fish. While the result itself was worse than the final score 10 days earlier at Arlesey, the overall performance was better and more cohesive. We had some fight and desire in us, and it showed. Joe never dodges the hard truths and his aftermatch podcast make for some very absorbing listening as he expresses the raw emotion and pain of defeat. I couldn’t do it. Not in a month of Sundays. In all my conversations with Joe he’s never shirked responsibility for how this season has unfolded. From my perspective there are a few factors that have contributed to us being exactly where we are now. I’m not going to inflict all my musings on you now, I’ll save that for the season review, but here’s a couple of things to act as a taster. During the summer we lost Gary Levy, Jammers, and Lee. All big characters and influential in many ways behind the scenes. There’s a simple truth that teams can be successful depending not just on the skill of the individuals but also the chemistry of the individuals. It’s intangible and hard to quantify but if a team is successful don’t meddle, don’t tinker, or interfere because you do so at your peril. Secondly, we retained most of the players from last season that Joe wanted for this season. What we didn’t bargain for was being without Luke chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 Dunston & Kyle Davison-Gordon for the whole season and only having Benji Crilley available for less than half the games. Fun Fact. When Benji has played we’ve won twice as many times compared to when he hasn’t played. We didn’t plan on losing last season’s joint top goal scorer, Kyle Faulkner after only a handful of games into the season. Proven goalscorers are like gold dust at any level. Even at Step 5 clubs will pay eye watering sums for the services of someone with a goalscorers’ predatory instinct and once a season has started, they’re very difficult to prise away from the clubs they’ve agreed terms with for the season. And I could go on….as I will do in the Season Review, but the point I’m trying to make is that there are many mitigating factors which don’t necessarily jump off the page at you at first glance. Our last game against Real Bedford as I’m sure I don’t need to remind you put paid to our Dudley Latham Memorial Cup ambitions in a very clinical fashion. Sometimes you just have to shake your opponents’ hand and congratulate them on an emphatic victory, shake yourself down, lick your wounds and come out fighting which I very much hope is what I hope Joe will have told the players to do this evening. On Saturday 30th March we’re holding a Club social evening. It will be a darts themed evening which is being organised by our Events Manager, Claire Lewis. All the first team players will be there. All are welcome, so please make a note in your diaries. On Thursday Club officials will be paying their final respects to Colin Tibbett at his funeral service. I wrote about Colin in my last programme notes. His passing is almost the final call of a generation of DTFC supporters. Colin deserves a lovely send off to mark his time spent as being one of life’s gentlemen. Finally, it was announced last week that the day to day running of Creasey Park has been awarded to Beds FA, which means that from the end of this month Dunstable Town Council will no longer have any input into the running of the Centre. We fully expect Hayley, Georgie & Lauren and all the staff to stay working at the Centre albeit in different coloured uniforms. We don’t know what it means for us as a Club and our plans for sustainable growth but will give owners and supporters regular updates as and when we learn more. Enjoy tonight’s game. Be loud, be proud, be Joe’s 12th Man but please be respectful of our opponents and this evening’s match officials.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Real Bedford Real Bedford is a club based near Cardington, Bedfordshire. The club has had many names over the years and are currently members of the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and play at McMullen Park, just off the A421 on the outskirts of Bedford. Bedford United FC was formed in 1957 as the works team of printers Diemer & Reynolds. Founder member, the late Jim McMullen, is remembered in the name of the ground, McMullen Park. In 1971 the club joined Division Three of the United Counties League, which was renamed Division Two the following season. They remained in Division Two until leaving the league in 1979, dropping into the Beds County League, going on to win Division One in 1979–80. In 1989 they joined Division One of the South Midlands League, becoming a member of the Senior Division following league reorganisation in 1993. In 1995–96 they finished third in the division, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Initially, the club commenced its football journey on a works pitch in the local area. Subsequently, they relocated to Cople, a nearby location, before finally establishing their home ground at Allen Park in Bedford. After their tenure at Allen Park, the club moved once again, this time to Fairhill on Clapham Road, where they continued to play their matches. However, the land on which Fairhill was situated was eventually purchased by Sainsbury’s, necessitating another relocation for the club. Under an agreement with the Council, the club underwent a relocation to Hillgrounds in Kempston, before eventually settling in their current ground in 1996. In 2000, Bedford United entered a trial merger with Bedford Town, but by the 2001–02 season, they had resumed their independent administration. Following lengthy negotiations with a local football club named US Valerio, both teams made the collective decision to unite their forces and establish Bedford United & Valerio FC for the 2002–03 season. Originally established as Unione Sportiva Valerio, with the name inspired by the Italian phrase for “Sporting Union” combined with the founder’s surname, Mr. Nicola Valerio, US Valerio commenced its journey in 1985 as part of the Michael R Peters Sunday League. Over the years, the club experienced considerable success. Notably, in the 2005–06 season, US Valerio emerged as the champions of the Harrison & Rowley Cup. It wasn’t until the 2000–01 season that the club ventured into junior and youth football, entering teams into the former Bedford Chesham League. At the conclusion of the 2005–06 season, Bedford United and US Valerio underwent a complete merger, resulting in the formation of Bedford Valerio United FC. Consequently, the club adopted this name for the 2006–07 season. However, following the dissolution of the Valerio Group in 2007, the decision was made to shorten the club’s name to Bedford Football Club, effective from the 2007–08 season onwards. During the 2012–13 season, the club achieved notable success by securing the Bedfordshire Senior Trophy title,
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Real Bedford alongside a commendable 5th place finish in the Spartan South Midlands Division One. However, their journey in that season did not extend to participation in the FA Cup or the Vase. Their path to claiming the Bedfordshire Senior Trophy involved triumphs over Oakley Sports and Kent Athletic. A resounding 8-0 victory against Ickwell in the quarterfinals propelled them to the semifinals, where they faced Caldecote and emerged triumphant with a 4-0 scoreline. Eventually, they sealed their first-ever Trophy victory by defeating Potton Utd with a 1-0 result in the final. Despite securing a commendable 3rd place finish in the league during the 2013-14 season, it was a year of disappointment for the club. Their aspirations in the FA Vase were cut short with a resounding 6-0 defeat against Hillingdon Borough. However, their league campaign showcased an exhilarating performance. With 26 victories and a remarkable 108 goals scored, the team displayed their prowess on the field. Unfortunately, despite their impressive efforts, promotion eluded them as they narrowly missed out to Kings Langley on goal difference. In the 14-15 season, their performance in Division One resulted in a third-place finish. However, this time around, their strong performance secured them promotion to the Premier Division by winning 26 league games, narrowly missing out on the second-place spot held by Broxbourne Borough by just one point. Their journey in the FA competitions was cut short, as they were eliminated early on by Kings Langley in the FA Cup and by their neighbouring team, Kempton Rovers, in the Vase. Despite these setbacks, they had a commendable run in the Challenge Trophy, reaching the semi-finals only to be eliminated by Kings Langley. Additionally, they made it to two more semi-finals in the Division One Cup and the Beds Senior Trophy. However, their aspirations for silverware were halted at the semi-final stage in all three competitions. Nevertheless, their performances throughout the season kept them in contention for the title, competing fiercely with Kings Langley and Broxbourne Borough until the very end. A series of three losses in the last month proved to be their downfall, ultimately costing them the title. The subsequent season proved to be a challenging one for the club, as they encountered issues both on and off the field. Unfortunately, their struggles the last five games Real Bedford 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC l2-1 a w1-6 a d3-3 h l4-3 a w2-1 h
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 translated to their performance, as they finished at the bottom of the Premier Division, resulting in relegation back to Division One. Throughout the season, the club faced a significant setback with player instability, employing a staggering number of over 80 players. This constant rotation hindered their ability to find a consistent rhythm, and as a result, they were only able to secure victory in nine league matches. Adding to their difficulties, a 3-point deduction further exacerbated their situation, contributing to their downfall and relegation from the Premier Division. It was a season marred by challenges and setbacks, and the club’s inability to find stability ultimately proved costly in maintaining their place in the division. In April 2022, the club underwent a change in ownership as it was acquired by Peter McCormack, a prominent bitcoin podcaster. Peter assumed the role of chairman and expressed his ambitious vision for the club, articulating his desire to see it ascend to the Premier League. He highlighted the population comparison between the club’s town, which consisted of 174,000 individuals, and Burnley, a town with a population of 90,000 that boasted a Premier League club. This contrast fuelled his belief that the community had the capacity to support league football. Emphasizing the club’s low starting point, he saw it as an opportunity to build the club according to their desired principles and construct a team aligned with their vision. However, he cited his personal connection to Bedford as the primary motivation behind his investment, considering it his hometown. Pete McCormack hosts one of the most influential Bitcoin podcasts worldwide, named “What Bitcoin Did,” which garners an impressive monthly listener base of over 1,000,000 downloads. Rob Sinclair transitioned from his role as first team coach at Dunstable Town to become the manager of Eynesbury Rovers after a successful tenure of 10 days. His appointment took place on the 18th of October, when Eynesbury Rovers occupied the 9th position in the table. Sinclair guided the team throughout the remainder of the season, ultimately finishing in the same 9th position. However, his journey with Eynesbury Rovers concluded as he departed from the club on the 10th of May 2022 to join Real Bedford. In his inaugural season, the club achieved remarkable success by clinching the league title with an outstanding total of 99 points. Their dominance was evident as they suffered a mere three defeats throughout the league campaign. Additionally, they displayed their prowess by securing victory in the Beds Senior Trophy, culminating in an impressive 6-0 win against Elstow Abbey, a prominent Bedfordshire County side. With such a commanding performance in their first season, the club’s achievements have fired anticipation and raised aspirations for a potential ascent to the Premier League. The future seems bright, and the team’s accomplishments suggested that they possessed the potential to compete at the highest level of English football. today’s visitors Real Bedford

32 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Real Bedford Frosinone, like many provincial towns in Italy, enjoys a stunning location. Surrounded on three sides by the Ernici and Lepini mountains, in what is known as the Valle Latina (“The Latin Valley”), there’s few better vistas on a sunny day that the view from the old town across the surrounding area. However, arrive on a misty evening, where you are doing circuits of the tiny one-way alley ways of said old town looking for a parking space, it isn’t so serene and beautiful. We’d headed south from Terni, down the A1 and finally located our hotel. There was a spooky feel about the deserted streets when we headed out for dinner. We’d got a recommendation from someone to go to A La Rosa, a family run restaurant on our route back from the pub. It was 8.30pm and one table was taken. We went in but whether it was our half-arsed attempts to speak Italian, or the fact they simply wanted an easy Saturday night, the answer to our request for a table for two (or twenty, twenty-two or two hundred) was that they were fully booked. A sweeping gesture with a hand over the empty restaurant hardly reassured us that it was true. We went next door. They had pasta and that was good enough for us. Sunday morning dawned and the mist hung over the elevated old town. The BBC weather app said it would clear and we’d have a sunny late morning. By 10:45am when we parked a short walk from Stadio Benito Stirp the clouds were slowly drifting over the mountain tops, revealing a stunning blue sky. The fan stalls were in operation, the food vans serving up porchetta roles and grilling beef steaks, adding colour to the aroma of the Sunday lunchtime kick off. Fans milled around, enjoying the sunshine and the relaxed atmosphere. Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 It was a million miles away from some of the scenes we see back in England. Danny and I debated whether 12.30pm on a Sunday was the perfect kick-off time. Early enough to get back home for a Sunday lunch and an afternoon stroll, or even get to another game. Despite the early start, and the 450-mile journey from Turin, they had sold out their allocation and were in good voice as we entered the stadium. The view from our seats was stunning. Snowpeaked mountains, framed by a brilliant blue sky above the stands. Add in our porchetta rolls filling an elevenses hole this was the best day ever. The Stadio Benito Stirp is a fantastic stadium, despite being rather modest in size. A capacity of just over 16,000, with one main stand, with its steel legs setting it apart from the rest of the ground that was one continuous wrap around. The redevelopment of the old municipal ground, known as the Matusa, started as far back as the mid-1980s but due to a lack of cash, and need as the club played in Serie C, wasn’t completed until 2017, just after the club had tasted Serie A football for the first time. After returning for another season in 2018-19, they were relegated but were promoted as champions of Serie B again last season. Desperate to avoid a swift return for the third time to Serie B, the club strengthened their squad in the summer and came into the game against Torino sitting nicely in mid-table, one point and one place behind the visitors. The club anthem rang out around the ground as the two teams emerged into the sunshine. We joined in, twirling our scarves above our heads like there was no tomorrow. “What do you want from this game Stu?” Danny asked. I’m a simple man so I wanted a sending off, a penalty and a controversial VAR decision. What I didn’t expect was to see all in the space of 30 first half seconds. The game started cautiously with the away side slightly shading it, but our gaze was still on the stunning backdrop when the Torino bench were furious that Frosinone’s Anthony Oyono remained on the pitch, having been booked early doors then flying into a second tackle high and late. But Torino’s ire turned to fortune a few minutes later when Kaio Jorge appeared to be pulled to the ground in the area as he was clean through. The referee initially gave the Frosinone player a yellow for diving but on the advice of the VAR team, he was summoned to the pitch side monitor. A minute later he sprinted across the pitch but didn’t give the penalty, instead awarding Torino a free kick for an alleged foul in the build-up. Jorge’s yellow still stood. We changed ends at half-time in true non-League fashion, with a different perspective of a similarly stunning backdrop of mountains. Torino looked the most likely to break the deadlock but never really without troubling Stefano Turati in the Frosinone goal. They did have the ball in the back of the net in injury time, but the flag was already up. The full-time whilst saw the players take the applause of the fans before they headed off for their Sunday roast. We wandered back to the car, still in awe of the surroundings we found ourselves in before we headed back up the road to our final game of the weekend, a tasty Serie D encounter in the village of Genzano di Roma.

TRAVELLING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT The 61 Red Eagle bus from Dunstable takes you directly to Aylesbury town centre via Tring, making stops in some villages along the way. The closest train station is Aylesbury Vale Parkway. You can get there from Luton by taking a train to London Marylebone. RECOMMENDED PUB(S) The Cotton Wheel (HP19 9BF) is your closest option, a Hungry Horse pub with Greene King IPA on tap. If you’re coming to the match via the town centre, The Hop Pole (HP19 9AZ) boasts 10 cask ales and a good menu. On Buckingham Road, the Horse & Jockey (HP19 9QL) serves up decent food with London Pride and Doom Bar.
