2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v FC Romania Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all at FC Romania to this evening’s match here at Creasey Park. FC Romania have started the season in decent form as they find themselves sitting in 6th place just outside the playoff position. The game will encounter 2 teams looking for the result to propel us to what I think is our target this season, a playoff spot or higher come the end of the season to allow us to move up the ladder and continue to grow as successful clubs. Romania will be no mean feat and we must play at our absolute best to make sure that on our home turf, under the lights, backed by numbers it is us that are celebrating after the final whistle. BUT if we expect Romania to roll over and let us take the win at home, we’d be in for a rude awakening. We will fight with desire, passion, professionalism, and intensity to ensure that we give our fans and our club a boost tonight. Fortunately, from the weekends game we didn’t gain any further injuries within the match squad, so we go into tonight’s game with a similar team from Saturday. A 76-mile round trip from Creasey Park on Saturday saw us take on bottom of the league Sawbridgeworth Town. This mentality that we were playing a team at the foot of the Spartan was quickly shifted out of the minds of us as a coaching body and the playing squad. No game in this division is an easy one and if we decided to drop our standards because of our mentality to dismiss the opposition I’d be writing these notes on the back of a loss. We started the game going uphill on a boggy, clammy heavy pitch but we weren’t going to let them be excuses it was the same for both sides. Within the first 15 minutes we could have had the game wrapped up as we created chances galore but unfortunately just failed to hit the back of the net. This gave Sawbridgeworth encouragement and someone we went into the break trailing 1-0. Somehow Sawbridgeworth managed to keep 11 players on the pitch as their captain hacked down Danny Webb, who with his raw pace would’ve gone on to be one on one with their goalkeeper, only to be shown a yellow card, maybe the ref left his red in the changing room. A rocket from Joe at half time we went into the 2nd half knowing that with the quality we possess and the intensity that we know we can play at, within this 2nd jalf we can blow these out the water and turn the tie on its head. We then found ourselves 2-0 down which wasn’t in the script and knew we had to pick up our shovels and dig deeper than we’ve ever dug before. As you’d expect and it’s clever, match balls slowly went into COACH Anthony Christophi 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 hiding, goal kicks were taking an age and anytime the ball went dead the clock ticked by. We managed to combine well and after a bombardment we got our goal through Danny Webb just 7 minutes after their second in the 72nd minute. We were calm, we believed in ourselves and our ability. A slight tweak to the system allowed us to expose opposition frailties and in the 90th minute a pass infield found its way to Harry Beamount just outside the penalty area with space and time, he set himself with a great first touch and wrapped it into the top right-hand corner sending us into wild celebrations. We pushed and pushed for the winning goal but unfortunately time just ran out on us. Once again, our character was undeniable to come back from 2 goals down in difficult circumstances was excellent but not the perfect result we craved. Hopefully tonight we can put in a performance to be proud of and in our manor, our back garden we can do just that. We believe in our players and with your support tonight can be special. Many thanks to the supporters who made the long journey at the weekend, and we look forward to seeing you all tonight! On a personal note, I asked Joe if I was able to write these notes today and for me it falls on a special day. Many of you know I lost my father on the 22nd September and myself at the age of 26 it was something I was least expecting. On Thursday last week, I took the pre-match YouTube and expressed my feelings towards the staff supporters and players who have contacted me in this time and supported me with many messages. I have felt much love and strength. To Joe and Kyle, thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to take breaks when needed, for not putting any pressure on me, for allowing me to be at matches and training and for their kind words of support and love. To the chairman, Andrew, and all at Dunstable town. Many thanks for the flowers that were sent, the kind messages that I received, the shout outs on Podcasts and the personal chats that I’ve had with many of you. To our players thank you for understanding, thank you for being patient and thank you for your support. This club is one big family and it showed when we played at home to Stansted and once Joe Sellers-West scored his hat-trick, the lads came over to the dugout and celebrated with me which was unbeknown to me. I felt love, I felt strength, and it made me realise how special this family really is. In my religion and beliefs, today marks the 40th day of my dad’s passing. We believe that for the first 39 days, he roams the world and goes places that he wanted to go and on the 40th day is when he finally makes his last journey to everlasting paradise. Unfortunately, he never made the journey to Creasey Park to watch us play, but he called me after every match to find out how we got on, and I know that he will be watching on tonight, urging the lads on to get a result. Once again, a huge thank you to everyone associated with Dunstable Town Football Club and thank you to my dad for being the best ever. I hope your journey to paradise is a safe one and I’ll miss and love you forever.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v FC Romania Good evening everyone and welcome to Creasey Park for this evening’s SSMFL match against FC Romania. Our opponents are based in Cheshunt and for those of you who are unfamiliar with their history, they’re nicknamed The Wolves and were founded in 2006 by a group of emigres keen to establish a “home from home” club. I was at an event on Monday evening at Beds FA & bumped into our former player Marius Patru, who many of you will remember from our Step 4 days and known to us all as “Paddy”. Paddy & I had a quick chat & I know he’s looking forward to coming back to Creasey Park, this evening. We wish Paddy & colleagues and all FC Romania supporters an enjoyable evening at Creasey Park and a safe journey home at the final whistle. I couldn’t fault the efforts of the boys last Sunday in the 1st Round of the Isuzu FA Vase match against Woodford Town. Every player acquitted themselves admirably & I thought that had we got a draw in the 90 minutes nobody could claim we weren’t worth it. But that’s football for you, you don’t always get what you deserve, and I was pleased after the game to see the mood in the camp still upbeat and positive. In goal, Alex Desmond made his debut as did Levi Squillace at the back, both had excellent games & can only strengthen Joe’s selection options. We don’t budget for anything other than “runners up” money from both the FA Vase & FA Cup. That way, Joe knows with certainty that we can maintain the budget we agreed with him at the start of the season. Winning prize money would of course have been very handy but the Club’s Treasurer, Lee Nania, and Matt Carrington & Dudley Peacham before him, have all been financially cautious in their decision making and always worked on worst case scenarios in order for us to always balance the books. Sunday’s stats were interesting and give you an indication of the way football economics work at Step 5. Gate receipts from Sunday totalled just under £900. We needed to pay our opponents travelling expenses and the match officials’ fees. Once we’d made those payments it left both clubs with just under £250 each. When you take into consideration, we hired the pitch from the Council & are obliged to provide post-match food for players, match officials and committee members, we were left with about £75 “profit”. Just about enough to buy three new footballs. That is why we’re so grateful to the incredible generosity of all our sponsors and owners who enable us to provide attractive entertainment week after week for what we believe to be a fair and reasonable price. chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 It’s also why fundraising both on matchdays and throughout the season are also incredibly important. I want to say a special thank you to Nick Jackson who volunteers his time on matchdays to sell merchandise. On Sunday, Nick won the 50-50 prize and donated half his winnings back to the Club. Thank you also to Ron & Vera Roberts for doing their bit on the merchandise stall. It was great to see Ron back and recovering from being unwell recently. Friday night saw us hold a pre-Halloween Quiz Night at Dunstable Cricket Club. You may remember that we announced a special partnership with Dunstable Town Cricket Club back in July. Over 70 people attended and had a wonderful time being quizzed by Matt and raising lots of money for the Club at the same time. None of it could have happened without the sterling preparatory work carried out by Peter Bottom whose organisational skills are second to none. There are tickets available for the Winter Ball which is being held on Saturday 2nd December at Tillsworth Golf Club. There’s live music from The Trollies, as well as a hot buffet. Dress code is formal. Tickets are priced at £40, with a small number of VIP tickets available at £50. For more details please email [email protected]. It’s important to state that profits raised from both evenings go towards the Club’s community support groups and to the football requirements of both our Adult & Junior sections. As always, thanks again for your incredible support this evening. Be loud, be proud, be the Team’s 12th Man, but please show respect to our opponents and match officials.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history FC Romania The team was formed in 2006 by Romanian immigrants in the UK who had played at various football clubs in their home country. Most of the players and manager worked on construction sites in London, and, on Saturdays, they played football. Ionuţ Vintilă entered the team into the Sunday London Weekend League playing their games on Hackney Marshes. FC Romania won their division in the first season and finished runnerup in the next. Ionuţ Vintilă is the manager and president of the club. Back home, Ionuț was playing football for Târgoviște Chindia before he moved over to England in 2005, hoping for a better life for him and his family, like many other Romanians since then. In 2006 in London, over some pints, a few Romanians decided to get a football team going and pointed at Ionuț when deciding who the manager should be. The role came to him rather than the other way around. He now has his Football Management Licence from UEFA, which is recognized all over the world, after 18 months of courses, match visits from the FA representatives and a project of over 70 pages about his coaching strategies for FC Romania. John and Barbara Saunders are Chairman and Hospitality Manager. Beyond their involvement in football, the couple work for the Moreton Romanian Orphans Fund, an established nongovernmental organisation located in London. Over the course of the past three decades, this NGO has organised visits to the UK for orphaned children from Romania. Barbara and John, in collaboration with Ionuț, have actively participated in bringing these children to FC Romania matches, which ultimately served as the catalyst for their first encounter with Ionuț. Since then, an enduring connection has flourished between them, as evidenced by Ionuț affectionately referring to them as “Mami and Tati” (Mum and Dad). The club has gained a lot of attention in its short life from various media outlets in England, abroad and of course in Romania. The club and the manager have appeared in sports newspapers and magazines including, BBC Sport, Gazzetta dello Sport, L’equipe, The Times, The Sun, FourFourTwo magazine to name a few and on television in the UK on BBC on Japanese TV with NHK and on Romanian TV stations Pro TV and Digi Sport. The club has developed into a focal point for the Romanian community but has also attracted many local and English fans as well. The club has ambitions to progress through the leagues and reach higher standards of football while developing the team further. The aim is to eventually have their own home and become a respected and established part of English football encompassing all the good things about England and Romania. In 2006, Ionuț took the initiative to enrol the team in the Sunday league held in London, and astonishingly, they won the league in their first season. Ionuț and his colleagues, where employed at various construction sites scattered across different areas of London. Many of these left Romania to join FC Romania, on the promise of employment contracts
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v FC Romania extended by Ionuț himself or through his professional network. In 2008 FC Romania switched to Saturday football and joined the Essex Business House Football League, playing at Low Hall Recreational ground in Walthamstow, North East London. In 2010 the club moved to the Middlesex County Football League Division One, playing at Leyton Sports Centre and finished second in their first season gaining promotion. The following season in the Premier League saw FC Romania finish second but they were denied promotion to senior football due to the ground regulations. In 2012–13 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time, beating Tring Athletic in the first qualifying round, before losing 7–0 at Hoddesdon Town in the next round. In the same season the club finished second in the Premier Division for a second successive season and were promoted to the Essex Senior League after a ground sharing agreement with Cheshunt allowed them to meet the ground grading regulations. The season also saw them win the Middlesex County League’s Open Cup with a 3–1 win over Bratham in the final. In 2013, FC Romania made a significant relocation to the Cheshunt Stadium, situated on Theobalds Lane. Historically, the site had originated as a gravel pit, but by the 1930s, it had transformed into the local dumping ground for waste materials. However, between February and October 1949, the area underwent extensive clearance and levelling, culminating in the establishment of a playing field. In that period, two Nissen huts were constructed near where the main gates are today, serving as changing rooms. These facilities lacked essential amenities such as electricity, telephone, and hot water, meaning a considerable uphill trek for the players to reach the pitch. Finally, on 29 October 1949, the ground was formally opened. In 2014–15 the club finished 6th in the league and entered the FA Cup for the first time, reaching the second qualifying round, where they lost 2-3 to Sutton United. The 2017–18 season saw FC Romania win the Essex Senior League’s Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy, beating Takeley 1–0 in the final. The club also finished third in the league, and after Shaw Lane folded, they were promoted the last five games FC Romania l2-1 a l3-0 a d3-3 a w0-5 a d2-2 a
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 to the South Central Division of the Isthmian League as part of the league readjustments. Following their promotion to Step 4, FC Romania ventured into uncharted territory by participating in the FA Trophy. Regrettably, the tournament has not proven to be a favourable hunting ground for the team, as they experienced consecutive defeats in the competition starting from the 2018-19 season onwards. However, a notable exception occurred during their final season at this level, the 2022-23 campaign, when they managed to advance beyond the first stage by securing a penalty shootout victory against Westfield. Nonetheless, their journey came to an end in the subsequent round as Faversham Town emerged victorious. Following the curtailed 2020–21 season, which witnessed an abrupt halt due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, FC Romania underwent a transfer to Division One Central within the esteemed Southern League. Upon their entrance into the Southern League for the 2021- 22 season, the team encountered early departures from the FA Cup, facing defeat against Welwyn Garden City, and the Trophy, succumbing to Marlow. Notably, their participation in the League Cup concluded with a 2-1 loss on their home ground against Harlow Town. With only the league competition remaining, FC Romania achieved a notable 12th place finish, marking the highest position attained by the club in their history at step 4. The 2022-23 season proved to be a turbulent period in the annals of the club, characterised by a sequence of events including two takeovers, three managerial changes, points deductions and an eventual, albeit predictable, relegation. The season commenced with a triumph in the FA Cup on the opening day, followed by a defeat against Kidlington in the league at Yarnton Road on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline. Subsequently, FC Romania experienced elimination from the FA Cup at the hands of Heybridge Swifts, only to rebound with a victory over the eventual league champions, Berkhamsted. These instances encapsulate the rollercoaster nature of their campaign. Following the first takeover of the club at the start of the 2022–23 season, John Mackie and Terry Spillane were appointed joint-managers, the first managers of the club since it was founded other than Vintilă. However, Mackie left after a month, and Spillane soon after, leaving Chico Ramos in charge. Vintilă re-purchased the club in February 2023 and appointed himself as manager, but was unable to save the club from relegation, as they finished bottom of Division One Central and were relegated to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League. For the coming season Ionuţ Vintilă remains in his role as manager and has been joined by Kevin Christou as his assistant, Matt Coker joined as first team coach and George Georgiou returned as director of football. today’s visitors FC Romania

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 29 dunstable town fc Under 18 Lionesses Saturday 28th October HOME vs Pitstone & Ivinghoe Well…. A great weekend for the Under 18 Lionesses. At last, just reward for their patience and commitment to footballing principles. The girls showed real perseverance to secure their first win of the season. Having been on the end of a series of losses that were not a true reflection of the matches, the u18 Lionesses took out their frustration out at home to Pitstone & Ivinghoe. Chances in the first few minutes were not taken and then a freak goal conceded in the 5th minute could have meant heads dropped. Not the case. The Lionesses stuck to their passing principles and got their rewards from a surprising source. A corner in the 20th minutes led to the Goal of the Season so far. Captain Eva Rawson made a late run from centre back to meet the corner full on the volley. From 15 yards out she leapt to smash it high into the net…. Unbelievable from the skipper. Her first goal in 4 years. After this the Lionesses were dominant. A mixture of wasteful finishing and a resolute goalkeeping performance for the Pitstone keeper meant the Lionesses did not break through until a minute before half time. A quickly taken throw allowed Mai Massink to break down the left wing. Cutting inside the right back she squared the ball for Erica Gough to smash home. A thoroughly deserved 2-1 lead at half time. Patience was the message from the coaches at the half time team talk. The Lionesses didn’t have to be patient for too long….. 2 quick fire goals in the 47th and 50th minute took the Lionesses out of reach. Goals from Mai Massink and Scarlett Maher was just the start. 3 more were to follow. Scarlett Maher and Mai Massink were both to take their second goals; with the ever energetic, Jas Golby, picking up a goal that she thoroughly deserved. A great team performance and thoroughly deserved. The Under 18s return to Creasey Park on Saturday 11th November to take on MK United.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 dunstable town fc Lionesses Sunday 29th October AWAY vs Cranfield United Ladies A composed performance saw progress to the next round of the league cup with a 5-1 win at Cranfield United. This was a tricky game following a home win against the same opposition the week before. The previous week’s 6-2 league win at Creasey Park meant an opposition looking for payback. With 3 clear chances made in the first 5 minutes, was it going to be one of those days. One sided in terms of possession and chances; but were the Lionesses going to pay for not taking the chances. On 14 minutes a corner for the Lionesses was fired in and at last a touch of fortune. The ball flying in off the head of a Cranfield defender. 1-0 Lionesses. No more than they deserved, but not from one of our own. Elizabeth ‘Bibs’ Owen had been running the Cranfield right back ragged. Numerous chances had slipped by. In the 30th minute she got her reward. 2-0 Lionesses. Exhausted, ‘Bibs’ took a few minutes to recover. Calm and controlled passing from the keeper to the forwards meant that the victory looked likely. 3 further goals for the Lionesses followed in a 9 minute spell. First, a thumping drive from Ella Allwood. She’d dominated the midfield, driving from deep linking the play from back to front. The 4th came from a corner, swung in from the left. Confusion again created in the 6 yard box before Emily Hobbs rose to head in from close range. A 5th was to follow from ‘Bibs’ Owen again. Having recovered from her 1st half efforts. She returned to the pitch to score at the back post with her first touch after returning to the pitch. A swift break down the right hand side saw the cross fired across into the 6 yard box for Owen to bundle in. A close range swivel and shot from the Cranfield no.9 meant all of the efforts of the Lionesses back line of Khan, Mapp, Rawson and Rhodes didn’t get their reward. Olivia Lawrence, in goal, had no chance as she dived full length to her left. Not bad for a back 5 who are all teenagers….

38 DUNSTABLE TOWN v FC Romania This was my fourth trip to the land of fire and ice, and I’d yet to see a game. I’d had a wander around the national stadium at Laugardalsvöllur, the 10,000 capacity ground next door to the biggest outdoor swimming pool on the island but never had the sniff of a game. Pick the right weekend and you cannot walk more than a few hundred yards in Reykjavik without stumbling on a ground – with 30 clubs playing in and around the city. There were games on both nights we were there, but I didn’t want to be greedy so suggested we only went to one on each night, rather than the two which was possible. I had no idea what to expect. Average attendances for league games in the Pepsi Deildin, the top flight in Iceland, were less than 800 in 2022, with the best supported team being U Breiðablik Kópavogur, the upstarts from Kópavogsbær in the Höfuðborgarsvæðið region of Reykjavik who had won the 2022 league championship. I’d like to see you ask a taxi driver to take you there after a beer or two. Valur has spent most of its time in Icelandic top flight football, having only played 3 seasons in the clubs history outside the top tier, and is one of the most successful football clubs in Iceland with 23 Icelandic championships and 11 Icelandic Cups. For the past three seasons they have entered the Champions League, losing to Rosenborg, Maribor and Dinamo Zagreb respectively. European football does pose a problem, as the surprise package from Norway this season, Bodø/Glimt, showed in that whilst the rest of the domestic league shuts down for the winter break, they have to keep playing in Arctic conditions. The club holds the record attendance to a football match in Iceland with Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39 18,243 spectators in attendance v Benfica in 1968, although that was at their old stadium. The current stadium, Hlíðarendi (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈl̥iːðarˌɛntɪ] if that makes it any easier for you), opened in 2008 and is a one sided affair, attached to an indoor sports hall. As with most pitches in Iceland, it is a 3G, as too are most in the country, which is understandable with the weather in these parts. The performance of the national side in the last few major tournaments, both Men’s and Women’s is attributed to providing community facilities based around 3G pitches around the country, both indoor and outside, encouraging more youngsters to play the game. Information on the game, aside from location and kick-off time was scant. My Icelandic is rusty to say the least but from Google Translate it appeared entry was free, and coffee was 250ISK (£1.50) or vice-versa so we made our way towards Perlan, the “Futuristic revolving glassdomed fine dining restaurant in park setting, with cocktail bar” that sits atop a hill overlooking the city, ducking into the ground just before the ascend requires oxygen. It was indeed free entry, and coffee was indeed 250ISK. Confident in my Google’s ability to make sense of Icelandic, I tried to order a hot dog in local language, which just led to smirks from the young girls behind the counter, who responded in perfect English. The single stand afforded some good views of the sunset to the west, which were the highlight of a goal less first half. Valur have a decent squad, made up of Icelanders, Danes, a Dutch keeper and former US international Aron Jóhannsson, born of Icelandic parents in the US. They huffed and puffed against a spirited HK, or to give them their full name, Handknattleiksfélag Kópavogs side, promoted to the top division for the start of the 2023 season, hailing from just outside the capital. Kópavogur is one of Iceland’s most prominent sites for Icelandic urban legends about the huldufólk, or elves, as we would better know them. There was little to shout about in the 2nd period and with two minutes to go we headed out, conscious of the 9pm food curfew. As we stepped out of the ground, of course, we missed the one and only goal, scorer still to this day unknown. The following night we had the joy of Thróttur Reykjavík vs Fylkir at Þróttarvöllur, a venue not a stone’s throw away from the National Stadium, but also a similar distance from the RVK Brewing Company taproom, which I am not ashamed to say, waylaid us for a good 75 minutes of the game, by which time the away side had gone into a 2-1 lead and that’s how it stayed. There’s sometimes more to life than football, as the RVK C & C Stout (“This is what do you get when you introduce a dozen cinnamon rolls to a Russian Imperial Stout. Dark, handsome and sophisticated with an intensely complex flavor profile. One may find notes of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and liquorice intertwined in a delicate balance’) proves. Reykjavik is up there with the best for a weekend (or late week) getaway. Yes, it is expensive and yes, it can be freezing (the temperature dropped from a daytime high of 8 degrees when we were there to a low of -13 a week later), but the scenery, the friendliest of people, the food, the beer and occasionally, the football, make it a sure-fire winner of a weekend.
