2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton Welcome to Kane, the coaching staff, players, and the supporters of Shefford Town & Campton ahead of this evening’s clash. A quick return to league action is incoming 48 hours after our disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Baldock Town. Shefford have proved another difficult side for us over the last 2 seasons with only 1 win against them, 2 losses and a draw early this season. We will be looking to replicate the same level of performance we showed against them last season here at home as opposed to what we served up at their place early in the season. Shefford come into the game unbeaten in 4 games which have included impressive wins against Tring Athletic and St Panteleimon as well as drawing with Bedford on Tuesday night before losing on penalties. It is a tough game that awaits us, and it is important we don’t dwell on Tuesday night; we park it and move forward quickly. Tuesday night was disappointing to lose at home. It has nothing to do with Baldock’s league position as we have no divine right to win any games at this level. I was more disappointed with the lethargic way we played in the 1st half. I was devastated for Carl Knox to have sustained another setback. Knoxy is genuinely one of the nicest, most genuine people you could wish to meet. He has worked so hard to get back to playing and to see him not get up after a terrific save was gut wrenching. There were no words I could afford him and all I could simply provide him was a man hug and a few words of comfort. Then to see Joe Sellers-West overstretch his hamstring which was probably as much down to fatigue left me feeling more bitter than angry. The fixture backlog for not only us but for other teams has been terrible to see. 4 games in 7 days for any team is ridiculous. The collateral damage for these players is felt by us all. When you consider on several occasions, we have been refused the chance to move games to our ATP2 it was almost inevitable there would be injuries. Poor Ricardo Green, Josh Hatton and James Lauder who were withdrawn at half-time last looked dead on their feet. I have a great deal of admiration for their desire to play through fatigue for me and for that I can’t thank them enough. 1st half we looked leggy, looked 2nd to every loose ball and a wonderful bit of quality from Baldock Town ultimately lost us the game. In true Dunstable Town fashion we never gave up and pushed for an equaliser right to the final whistle. It wasn’t to be but to see my lads applauded off by 155 people on a Tuesday night cushioned the blow. I have been so guilty this season of losing sight of what is important. I have spent far too much time obsessing about results and failings that I have completely lost sight of what is important. I have lost sight of the things that go way beyond the result on the HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 pitch. Scottie and Ian Bateman in the bar presenting another one of my lads Ethan Creary with a 100-appearance shirt to join Joe Sellers-West is fantastic. Joe and Ethan have been a part of my life for 7 years and to see how they have matured makes me feel both proud and emotional. I remember their debuts at home to Aylesbury Vale Dynamos as if it was yesterday. To see how they have both grown has been great to see. The support and patience you have all shown them both during turbulent times is a credit to such a special club. They have had bumps but have also created incredible highs and I am immensely proud of both. Today I received an incredibly heartwarming message from club legend Peter Bottom, off the back of my programme notes against London Lions. Anyone that is new to the club that hasn’t met Peter, I suggest you take a moment to spend time with him. Peter is a fantastic human being, incredibly positive and does so much that is unseen but appreciated. The work Peter did in the summer to build a kitchen in the hub was exceptional. Peter is too humble to ever accept a thank you but from us all a massive thank you is due. Peter’s message whilst most of the content out of respect to Peter will remain private was incredibly humbling. Peter’s words of support to me after what I have described as a “disaster” of a season really gave me a slap of reality. I wrongly assume that when we lose, I am like a leper and should be treated accordingly. Peter’s message went a lot deeper in terms of the joys we bring him after some terrible individual adversity. His words resonated with me that life isn’t always defined by tangible results. Peter I am immensely thankful for your kind words. It hasn’t just been the supportive words from Peter this season. I have had copious amounts of messages from so many people this season. This season during horrible times, rubbish results and ultimate disappointment at some point I have received messages from Scottie, Ian Bateman, my incredible Chairman Andrew Madaras, Neil Barker, Matt Carrington, Julian Nutley, Steve Lewington, Kristy Lewington, Wayne Upton, and Andy Burrows to name a few. That coupled with many a supportive handshake and words of encouragement after a difficult result are always appreciated. The emotional guilt doesn’t go away of us falling short of our goals this season, but it does numb the pain. My last 2 and a half years with the club has created a lifelong group of people that I have got to meet and go on a journey with. I am not Derren Brown and have no idea how long this journey will continue. What I do know is that the friends I have made I genuinely hope will last a lifetime. You are a fantastic group of people. I never take what I have from you all for granted as what you provide is unique and special. We failed this season, no doubt about it. Form is temporary but class is permanent. I have a great deal of belief in myself along with Durcs and Anthony who are both top drawer and everybody associated with the club. It’s a great club it’s as simple as that.. To finalise I think a paragraph from Peter’s text finishes my notes perfectly and I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing. “For me Joe, it is not so much about winning (sounds odd) but I love coming down to watch your team, you, Kyle, Ant, Adam, and your boys the players. Win, lose or draw. I get to have an experience, meet my new friends, have a beer etc. I know other supporters who think the same as me.” Enjoy today’s game. Your proud Head Coach

4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton It only sems like yesterday that I was sat here writing programme notes and (checks calendar) it really was only yesterday that I was writing programme note for the Baldock match. Fast forward 24 hours and just like buses, you wait ages for one and then two come together, we have another match just 48 hours after our last one. Tonight, it’s a pleasure to welcome Shefford Town & Campton to Creasey Park. We wish their committee, supporters, players, and coaching staff a very warm welcome and hope they enjoy their evening in our company. Irrespective of the score let’s hope we get to see a good game of football and a good advert for the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division. Tuesday night’s performance against Baldock didn’t hit the highs of the previous three unbeaten games but I still thought overall a draw would have been a fair result. I said in the programme notes that our games against Baldock are always tight and competitive and Tuesday night was no exception. It was wonderful to see Ethan Creary receive his personalised shirt from the Regiment to mark his 100th appearance for the Club, just as it had been to see Joe Sellers-West receive his on Saturday after the thrilling victory over London Lions. When Joe took over as Head Coach, Gaz Levy & I had our first meeting with Joe in the Glider on Lowther Road. We went through the players that were in the squad at the time, shout out to Dylan Baker who is the only survivor from that list, and Joe told us of the players that he would be bringing to the Club. Ethan, Joe, Ruairi & Terrence were the names that I can still remember. It wasn’t just their abilities with a ball that Joe spoke about but their characters and their abilities to represent the Club which mattered so much to him. Over the three seasons we’ve been fortunate enough to have the lads with us we’ve watched them develop and mature into outstanding footballers and young men. It’s a humbling thought to realise that Ethan, Ruairi and Terrence are still only 21 and Joe just a year older. The average age of the players on Tuesday was just 22 years old. Sean & Alex are just 17, Josh is 20. None of them have looked out of place and have taken to the rigours of Senior football like ducks to water. Just like Axel Piesold who has broken into the Hatters first XI squad recently, there’s a good chance that one or two of these talented young Blues can make their mark in the First Team, impress the scouts and land a contract with a professional club. Last Thursday I had the privilege to watch Ciaran Alexander’s U18s chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 beat Leighton Town 2 – 0 at Creasey Park, in a commanding and dominant performance. There were some big performances on the night and just like last season when Joe gave minutes to Caleb, Dennis, Nat & Alex, I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two of Ciaran’s lads don’t get the opportunity to show off their talents as part of the First Team squad this season. Those of you with a penchant for the finer foods will no doubt be missing the delights of their matchday pie and mash. Mark’s trailer was broken in to and the damage caused was astronomical. It’s taken him a long time to get his new trailer ready and it was great to see him at Creasey on Tuesday night to let us know it should be ready for the home match against MK Irish on 30th March. That will also be the last time we play when Dunstable Town Council are our landlords. Beds FA take over the management and running of Creasey Park on the 1st April, so I’m going to take this opportunity to thank James Slack and Hayley McKee, and their duty managers and staff for the support and backing we have received from them in the past few years. They’ve gone above and beyond many times when they didn’t need to and for that as well as a hundred and one other reasons the Club owes them our heartfelt thanks and gratitude. March 30th is also the date for our first Darts Tournament. It starts at 7pm and we’d like as many supporters as possible to form teams to enter the competition to take on the First Team darts enthusiasts. The number of places left is dwindling so please get in touch if you’d like to take part or if you just want to come down & chat with Joe & the players & enjoy a drink with fellow supporters. Before that though we travel to Bedford on Saturday & then on Thursday 28th March, Dan & Matt’s U18s Lionesses play the final of the League Plate against Aylesbury Utd at Kempston Rovers ground. Kick off is 7.30pm & I know the players and coaching staff would be absolutely thrilled to see good DTFC support there to cheer them on. Thanks to all of you who supported the lads on Tuesday. It was a difficult night, but you stuck with them, got behind them & gave them a wonderful round of applause at the final whistle. You are without doubt, head and shoulders the best supporters in the League. Enjoy tonight’s game. Lets get behind Joe & the lads from the kick off and be their 12th Man. Be loud, be proud but please be respectful of our opposition and the match officials.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Shefford Tn & Campton Shefford is a town and civil parish located in Central Bedfordshire. At the 2001 census it had a population of 4,928 and was estimated to have grown to 5,770 by 2007. The population at the 2011 Census had risen to 5,881. The River Flit and the River Hit run through the town. The Flit runs from Flitwick and joins the River Ivel on the edge of Shefford. The Ivel eventually joins the River Great Ouse just north of Sandy. The name Shefford is derived from “sheep-ford” because there had been a sheep market and ford crossings over the two rivers that run through the town. Shefford has been home to a number of noteworthy residents throughout its history. One notable figure is Sir William Lukin, 1st Baronet, who resided in Shefford during the 17th century. Lukin was a Member of Parliament, a Commissioner of the Great Seal, and received a baronetcy from Charles II. Another notable resident is Peter May, a renowned crime writer and novelist. Although born in Hertfordshire, May lived in Shefford for a significant period and gained recognition for his detective novels, particularly the China Thrillers series. George Thomson, a British physicist, and Nobel laureate, also called Shefford home. His research on electrical conductivity in gases led to his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937. Sir John Vincent, an eminent historian and academic specializing in British political history, resided in Shefford for many years. He served as the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1978 to 1989. Shefford Town & Campton Football Club (The Bluemen) are based in the town of Shefford, Bedfordshire. The team plays its home matches at Shefford Sports Club on Hitchin Road in Shefford and at Campton Playing Fields, Rectory Road in Campton. The club is competing at the 10th tier of the English football league system in the Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One. The club also has a reserve side competing in Premier Division of the Bedfordshire County Football League and U23 and development teams appearing in the same league structure. Founded in 1910, the club played its first football in September when it began to enter a team into the Biggleswade and District Junior League. Playing home matches at Ivel Road, the team contested this local competition until 1949–50, when Shefford began to enter its team into the South Midlands League. The side won the Beds Senior Cup that season, a feat it repeated in 1953. After finishing runners-up in the Beds Senior Cup, the following year, winning it again in 1955 and capping these feats with two successive league championships, Shefford Town started to contest the Parthenon League against teams from further afield – some away trips took the team as far as London. In the new league, Shefford finished as runners-up in the first season before spending two more years in the

12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton competition. After three years, the long journeys and sparse league programme led the club to join the more local United Counties League. In 1960–61, the league championship came to Shefford, and the club added the North Beds Charity Cup to its trophy cabinet during the same week. The following season saw a drastic change in fortunes, as the team finished second from bottom – the club reacted by arranging a move back to the South Midlands League. The team came third during the first season back in the division, and in 1973–74 the team finished as runners-up. However, the club was relegated in 1975–76. Success didn’t come back to Ivel Road until the early 1980s – in 1982–83 Shefford lifted the Division One title and finished the following season as league champions. During 1983–84, Shefford also won the North Beds Charity Cup, the Biggleswade Knockout contest, and the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup. The North Beds Charity and Biggleswade Knockout double was repeated the following year. During the late 1980s the club stagnated, as the team tumbled back into Division One after finishing bottom in 1989–90. After three uneventful seasons, Shefford Town were moved to the Senior Division on league re-organisation. Though performances improved, with the team finishing fifth in 1993–94, the club was wound up and played its final match on 18 May 1994. Shefford Town Football Club was reformed in 2009 by Dan Pinkerton and Graham Earl, who had been involved in local youth football. The new club was accepted into the Bedfordshire County Football League for the 2009–10 season, and assigned a place in Division Two, at level 13 of the English football league system. In 2010 Shefford Town merged with near neighbours Campton. The club has had success both on and off the pitch in recent years since its reformation, the club were crowned Bedfordshire County Premier Division Winners in 2011–12, 2017–18 and 2018–19. The Bedfordshire County League Britannia Cup was won in both 2011 & 2014, 2019 and the East Beds Charity Cup was won by the Reserve team in 2015. The Club has also finished runners up in the Biggleswade knockout cup in 2015, 2016 & 2017. the last five games Shefford Tn & Campton l1-2 h w1-2 a d2-2 a w3-2 h d1-1 h

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 At the end of 2018–19 season Shefford announced its intentions to seek promotion into the Spartan South Midlands Football League, they duly wrapped up the Bedfordshire County League title and passed the relevant ground grading, so the club stepped back into the league it folded out of back in 1994. Under the Stewardship of Kane Dougherty and James Taylor the club topped division 1 during the curtailed season of 20/21 and finally guided us to promotion via the playoffs during the 21/22 season as well as winning the Divison 1 Cup. Shefford Town & Campton play fixtures at two local grounds, Rectory Road in Campton has been the club’s home since the 1920s and is still used by the club today, a typical village playing field with purpose-built Step 7 changing facilities, what is remarkable is that these facilities were brought into the 21st century through the hard work of the club’s players and management to ensure they could continue to play out of the club’s spiritual home. For the 2014/15 season, the club moved into its current home at Shefford Sports Club on Hitchin Road in Shefford. The new ground boasts a fantastic clubhouse, changing facilities and a well looked after pitch. In the spring of 2019, the club added a new stand with standing capacity for 100 spectators to assist with its push for promotion to step 6 of the Football League Pyramid. Shefford’s historic ground was on Ivel Road in Shefford. When the club folded in 1994 the land was left derelict until development started on it in the late 2000s. This paved the way for the new facility on Hitchin Road to be built. In their inaugural season at Step 6, Shefford Town & Campton’s Blueboys put up an impressive performance, securing a fourth-place finish and earning themselves a playoff spot. The semifinal match against the favoured Winslow United resulted in a routine 2-0 victory, setting the stage for a memorable day at Hitchin Road. A crowd of 410 spectators witnessed an exhilarating 4-1 triumph over Wellingborough, securing promotion to the Premier Division. Notably, it was also their first season participating in the FA Vase, where they reached the Third Round but unfortunately bowed out with a 5-0 defeat to Anstey Nomads. Moving up to Step 5, Shefford Town & Campton began their first season with a bang, clinching four consecutive victories and finding themselves at the top of the table by the end of September. However, as other teams caught up on their games in hand, the natural order of things prevailed, and Shefford gradually settled into a respectable 15th place by the season’s end. This season also marked their debut in the FA Cup, where they showcased their abilities by reaching the Third Qualifying Round and securing victories against Dunstable Town and Grays Athletic along the way. today’s visitors Shefford Tn & Campton

32 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton Sunday 25th February 2024 – AGF 2 FC Midtjyllland 3 – Danish SuperLiga – Cere Park, Århus, Denmark Football is a game of two halves of 45 minutes, but recent changes to the laws of the game Often means that a match will end up lasting an extra 10 or 15 minutes. As Sunday’s SuperLiga’s game entered the 104th minute AGF were laying siege to the FC Midtjylland goal who were defending with their nine men, eight if you exclude the limping right back. The home side had failed to build on a dominant first half performance, having to rely on a 76th minute Patrick Mortensen penalty to bring them back on level terms. The away side were hanging on for a point, throwing themselves into every challenge, trying to see out the final minute of the sixth added minute. but then from somewhere the Brazilian substitute Charles broke through the middle and a ball was laid up on a plate for him and he dinked the ball over the AGF keeper to score. The Brazilian was booked for his celebration, but no manager would begrudge that (it would’ve been amusing if he’d already been on a yellow though). The eight fit men from Herning had pulled off the most remarkable result. Rewind a couple of hours and I’d arrived from Vejle by train. I resisted the temptations of a cab, wanting to see a bit of Denmark’s second city. It’s a fair trek out to Ceres Park from the city centre but as darkness fell, AGF fans made their way on buses, bikes and on foot to one of the oldest stadiums in Denmark, first used for athletics by Aarhus Gymnastikforening, or AGF, in 1919. Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 Located next to Tivoli, the family funfair, the ground has gone through numerous redevelopments through the years, but it is only now that the conversion from a multi-sports venue to a dedicated football stadium is happening. The straits of the athletics track has already disappeared, with the pitch moved 10 metres south to accommodate the new stand rising on the far side. For now, the fans fill the two tiers that sweep around the rest of the pitch. AGF are five-times winners of the Danish Championship, their golden period coming from 1954 to 1961 where they won four championships and four Danish Cups. In 1961 they reached the quarter final of the then European Cup, where they lost to Barcelona. But since 1996 when they won the last of their ninth Danish Cup’s they have been trophyless. A third-place finish last season was somewhat of a surprise, but having built a platform, they were looking to push on this season, coming into the game against 3rd place FC Midtjylland in 5th place. The visitors, one of the only sides able to occasionally break the Copenhagen dominance in the last fifteen years, were looking to go top of the table, in a very close three-way fight with the big two from the Danish capital. They had come in their numbers, making the hour journey from the west, and had arrived with a heavy police presence. Below the main curve tier various grills had been set up cooking meaty sausages and kebabs. The craft beer scene had also managed to muscle its way in to the traditional domestic brewing scene so there was an alternative to the Ceres on offer. Big (litre) of a Danish IPA and a kebab in hand I headed up to the top tier in time for the club anthem, a tad on the long side, to be belted out. It was a cracking game with the home side ahead thanks to a 9th minute Mortensen penalty, awarded after the first of six decisions that went to VAR – AGF’s impressive winger Anderson initially being given a yellow for diving before it was overturned, and the foul given. In total there were 37 shots in the game, with 16 on target, with the majority coming in the opening fortyfive minutes. But you must take your chances and AGF were guilty of not doing that, allowing the visitors back in the game in injury time from the penalty spot. Three minutes into the second half and Midtjylland had the lead in the most bizarre of circumstances. A corner was sliced clear and looked to be going out for another but bounced with huge backspin, fooled the defence and Hanbeom tapped home at the near post. Their delight lasted all of sixty seconds though before Paulinho was shown a second yellow card. The home side pressed and pressed but needed another VAR decision to equalise. A challenge in the area was deemed fair by the referee only for the video assistant to ask the referee to look again. He changed his mind, awarded the penalty, and sent off Ingason for the challenge. Mortensen scored and set up an enthralling final 15 minutes. Nobody was going anywhere in the ground, with their seemingly only one winner but that late late goal by Charles saw the flares come out 8n the away end and the home fans leave by the nearest exit. Football,eh?
