2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Crawley Green Good afternoon and welcome to Paul Blackman, Sean Griffiths, the players, and all associated with Crawley Green ahead of this afternoon’s clash. I write these notes in hope that the weather is kind to us! Crawley Green play on an artificial pitch and at the time of writing we have written to the league requesting an opportunity to play on our very own artificial pitch which makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, we have had our request denied by the league for reasons that I find hard to fathom at this stage of the season. I must regularly pinch myself to remember that this is the Spartan Premier League and not the actual Premier League. We unfortunately don’t possess the same pitch facilities and equipment to retain the pitch quality in December that we have in August but let’s be honest who does at this level? Surely the most important thing is to get games of football on. I struggle to believe that the lack of a stand and some other arbitrary rules prohibit a game of football for commencing. I would counter the argument that perhaps having a game of football on is a huge benefit to our supporters, players and everyone attached to our wonderful club. Would our supporters care about a plastic seat as opposed to a cushioned seat to see their team play on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm? Ever since I was a child, I always knew football as being played at 3pm on a Saturday! The reality of any club at our level, above or below is that attendances are always substantially higher on a Saturday afternoon then the inevitable lower attendances on a Tuesday night where sometimes life gets in the way! The decision to refuse our game on our artificial pitch is dumbfounding. After all it was ok just 8 months ago when we hammered Harpenden Town in front of a crowd substantially north of 200 that created a superb atmosphere. It feels like the inevitable delay of the inevitable! Am I the only one who sees a terrible January and February that creates an horrendous back log for every club for the last 6 weeks of the season? Do I believe Crawley Green would have a problem playing on an artificial pitch? Bearing in mind they play on one for every home game and it was only four weeks ago they beat us on an artificial pitch. Let’s just hope that mother nature is kind, and we can get a game of football and start to get a regular run of games. We certainly face a very tough game against Crawley Green this afternoon. This time of year certainly brings a huge amount of change and we are no different. We have been very busy in revamping the squad. Ruthlessness seems to have been a present Durcs, Anthony and I were all gifted as a present HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 during the holiday season. We have a big squad and now is the time to ensure we reduce the squad size to focus individual attention on the players we believe can help us kick on for a massive 2nd half of the season. I have reviewed the last 2 seasons of highlight reels on YouTube which was fantastically put together by Brad. It is a hard watch and I allowed myself to step out of Manager mode and into Supporter mode. There were so many stand out moments of sheer jubilation, adulation, and many other raw human emotions. Unfortunately, those euphoric moments have been replaced by frustration and commiseration and that for me really hurts. I have scratched my head frantically to the point I am at least 80% balder than normal trying to fathom a genuine reason. I am sad to report that as of, yet I have been able to reach a definitive conclusion as to why we haven’t hit the levels of the last 2 and a bit seasons. I have been exceptionally thorough of my own self- analysis. Have I thought about doing the honourable thing and resigning? Absolutely I have, more than I would have liked If I am being honest. I simply haven’t because if it is 1 person, I trust more in the world than anyone I have ever known it is me! If I could have 1 person in the trenches in the middle of a crisis it would be me. I don’t know the word quit, it’s a cop out and I am not about that. I am about fighting on and until someone from the club tells me otherwise, I fight on. I’ve had much greater adversity in life than a bad run of results so fighting my way up the Spartan Premier League is a minor challenge as far as I am concerned. I don’t say this in selfadulation it is merely a reminder that when it comes to biting down on a gum shield and swinging for survival I have been there, done it and not only worn the t-shirt but thrown the t-shirt away after! If you are doubting me, I understand and I can’t blame you. What I will say is though in a few months’ time quote me when I say we have turned It around and we are in a very different position. I have never been more determined in my life to get success and once I get the bit between my teeth I never let go. I am absolutely delighted to welcome two new signings. Firstly, we have finally managed to sign centre back Will McClelland to the club. Will is exactly what we miss. He heads, is aggressive in the tackle and operates with a defend 1st mentality. He is outstanding defensively from set plays and also chips in regularly with goals from set plays and despite the long-drawn-out process of getting Will signed I am absolutely delighted to welcome him here. Secondly I am over the moon to sign centre forward Ezra Forde. Ezra has been my number one target ever since I took the job. Ezra scored over 120 goals for me in less than 2 seasons at Luton Town Cedars. I took him with me to Oxford City at National League South where he continued to score goals. He has been proven at Step 3 and 4 and is a fantastic addition to the group. He is a Number 9 and whilst for the last 18 months has been deployed both wide and as a Number 10, I have no doubts in a short space of time his name will be sung from the stands when he is smashing goals in. You will love him. I would like to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support. It has been challenging to say the least and I get that more than anybody else. Keep the faith and I promise you a run of results is just around the corner. Enjoy today’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Crawley Green A very warm welcome to all of you coming to Creasey Park for today’s match versus local rivals, Crawley Green FC. Thank you for braving the elements and coming out to support local football whether you’re a passionate Blue or Claret, I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and get to see a good game of football. A special welcome to Paul Blackman, Sean Griffiths, the players, and committee of Crawley Green FC. The Clarets deservedly claimed local bragging rights when we played them at the Brache four weeks ago. We weren’t at our best and lost out to two clinical finishes from former Blues, Jimmy Doherty & Joe Hankins. We know we’ll need to up our game if we’re going to get anything from today. The signs though are promising. We came back strongly away to FC Romania last Saturday. We certainly deserved something from the game and Danny Webb’s never say die 97th minute goal, may have proved to be only a consolation goal in the record books, but it did exemplify the effort that the lads gave during a much better second half performance. I’m relieved we don’t need to play FC Romania again this season. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory at Creasey Park in October we were the architects of our own downfall, but we should have had a draw at the very least as we should have done on Saturday. To have gained 4 points from the two games may have been a bit generous, 3 points probably about right, 2 points, ok I could live with that, but 0 points is just not cricket! And while I take nothing away from Crawley Green for their win on the 2nd December we’d hit the woodwork twice, missed a penalty before Jimmy Doherty’s wonder strike at the end of the first half. There’s an old saying in football that come season end the table doesn’t lie and all the dropped points, harsh decisions and flukey last minute equalisers and winners will have evened themselves up. I hope that proves to be the point because now we just don’t seem to be getting our fair share of luck. I hope though that the signatures of Will McClelland and Ezra Forde will consign four leaf clovers to stay growing in gardens. I’m delighted to welcome both to Creasey Park and hope they can both recreate the form that they have shown at other clubs and demonstrate the skills that have had Joe & Kyle so keen to bring them to the Club. I’m also very pleased to welcome Ciaran Alexander to the Club. Ciaran chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 has taken over the running of the U18s in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. Ciaran is supported by Connor Kavanagh and Jack Young as Assistant Coaches. Another new addition to the Club’s team of volunteers is Callum Wylde who is responsible for driving new Club ownership. It’s one of the areas where there is untapped growth and a “the sky’s the limit” number of individual club owners. If you’re not already an Owner, please consider becoming one and have a chat with Callum on matchdays. Ian Bateman, ably assisted by Andrew McCloskey & Peter Bottom keeps taking the Walking Football groups to new levels. We had a very successful meeting with Tibbs Dementia Fellowship just before Christmas and will be working with the local NHS Dementia diagnosis team to offer Walking Football to more people living with dementia. As this is an online edition you may be reading it as a supporter who is not able to get to the ground for today’s match. Your support is still very important to us, and I’m always pleased to receive emails and letters from home and abroad. I’ve just finished replying to one of our Dutch supporters and look forward to welcoming him to one of our home games before too long. Hopefully today’s match goes ahead, and you’ll see our Hospitality Manager Jackie Carrington provide matchday hospitality to today’s match sponsors in the CBS Hub. Jackie’s providing home made food for the sponsors & the Hub makes a great venue to host celebratory occasions or company matchday sponsorship. We believe it’s excellent value for money so please get in touch if you’re interested in sponsoring a match between now and the end of the season. I’d like to extend my thanks to all the volunteers at the Club, whether they’re our Youth Section coaches and assistants, our Lionesses coaching and admin team, Ciaran, Connor & Jack, our Community support groups volunteers and all the matchday & behind the scenes volunteers who keep all aspects of the Club ticking over. It’s a herculean task performed diligently and without complaint by so many people all having to juggle work, family, and other commitments along with their DTFC roles. Without all of them beavering away in the background this would be a very different Club. I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of what they do or begin to thank them adequately or sufficiently. Enjoy today’s game. Be loud. Be proud. But please be respectful towards our opponents and today’s match officials. Happy New Year to you and yours from myself, Matt & all the Club’s Directors.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Crawley Green Crawley Green is a suburb of south-east Luton near to London Luton Airport, in the Borough of Luton, Bedfordshire, England. The area is roughly bounded by Crawley Green Road to the north, Devon Road to the south, the Midland Main Line to the west, and Vauxhall Way to the east. The area was historically owned by the Crawley Family, owners of the now demolished Stockwood House and Stockwood Park. Crawley Green was originally a hamlet and farm on Crawley Green Road, near its junction with Hart Lane. The old farmhouse still stands at 124 Crawley Green Road. Nether Crawley Farm was slightly further up the road near what is now Vauxhall Way. Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99-year lease from the Council. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, had been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately, in that time they had failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years, to enable the team to continue to play at that level. This was a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), meant that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals. Luton Town installed a brand-new allweather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green completed the remaining requirements. This included new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile, and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen. “In the past we have seen a few exCrawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition, the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system. “A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Crawley Green youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people can participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income, and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, selfconfidence, and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.” Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.” The Brache had previously been used by Vauxhall Motors (Luton) until an artificial pitch was installed for hockey in 1991, forcing the club to resign from the Isthmian League; the pitch was later upgraded to 3G astroturf. A wooden stand remains in place from the Vauxhall Motors era. Their badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colours. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. the last five games Crawley Green 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC d3-3 a w2-0 h l4-1 a l1-5 h l6-0 a
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. They joined Division One of the South Midlands League in 1995, and when the league merged with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League in 1997, they were placed in Division One North. However, they left the league at the end of the 1997–98 season. In 1999 the club re-joined the Spartan South Midlands League, and were placed in Division One, which was renamed Division Two in 2001. They won the Division in 2004–05 but were not promoted. In 2007–08 they finished as runners-up and were promoted to Division One. In 2011–12 they won the Division One Cup. They won it again in 2015–16. The season also saw them finish second in the league and earning promotion to the Premier Division. The first season in the Premier Division the club finished mid table, but the following season they escaped relegation by 1 point. The 2018-19 season saw them finish in the top half of the table and hoping to improve on this standing the following season. Sitting in 8th place when the season was abandoned and in 12th place when the 2020-21 season was scraped, they could have hoped for a bright 2021-22. By November sitting in 20th place with just 2 wins from 16 games Crawley appointed Paul Blackman as their manager. They got their first win under the new regime in the New Year with a 4-2 victory at Baldock Town. A further 5 wins saw them avoid relegation with a superior goal difference to London Colney, who in turn escaped the drop due to a reprieve. The Dirty Ducks experienced early eliminations from both the FA Cup against West Essex and the FA Vase against neighbouring team Dunstable Town. The team’s early exits from the cup competitions provided them with an opportunity to redirect their focus towards the league. Additionally, they had a commendable performance in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy, where they reached the 3rd round before being eliminated by the eventual winners, Rugby Borough. Holding several games in hand over their competitors, they claimed the top spot in the table for a considerable period. However, as the new year arrived and other teams caught up with their extra matches, Crawley Green began to settle into their natural position in the standings. By the end of February, they slipped down to 5th place. Unfortunately, they only managed to secure two wins in their last 15 league games. Nevertheless, their final position of 12th marked a significant improvement compared to the previous season’s performance. today’s visitors Crawley Green

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 The Lionesses had enjoyed an away win over Goffs Oak Women by 4 goals to 2 only seven days earlier prior to this meeting at Creasey Park. From the first minute the Ladies took control of the match with some good passing moves showing how Manager Dan Lawrence & Coach Matt Collins had put their mark at training sessions on the squad with all the hard work from the beginning of the season turning a group of individuals into a team! The Ladies showed that they are now a controlled unit with shape and confidence throughout the team. A lovely move on 16 mins saw a strike from Seval to put the Lionesses one up. Then in the 23rd min Bibs Owen scored her first and soon after she followed up with her second goal. The Blues were now in total control and after two more lovely footballing moves Ella weighed in with 2 goals in the 43rd & 45th minutes. The second half again saw our girls in control with goals soon coming with a nice finish from a tight angle from Katy on 50 mins, then on 56 mins Bibs was put through on goal and she soon executed the finish to claim her hat trick. The Lionesses did take their foot off the pedal a little from then on and allowed Goffs Oak to get more into the game but with the Blues goalkeeper Olivia Lawrence in no mood to give away a clean sheet she did what she had to do to keep it. Although on 78 mins we saw one of our Ladies go into the sin bin the 10 remaining Lionesses saw the game out in controlled fashion to claim a seven-nil win. The match was watched by a healthy crowd on ATP2 of approx 40. Match report by Pete B

36 DUNSTABLE TOWN v Crawley Green Aside from a couple of Isthmian South league games against Guernsey and an FA Trophy tie against Merthyr a few years ago, there’s not been many opportunities to play against teams outside of England. But this summer an opportunity arose for us to take part in the expanded Fenix Trophy, now in its third season. Developed by Leo Aleotti, the owner of Italian side FC Brera, the inviteonly tournament features clubs with a social purpose, community-focused or are aligned to a special cause. FC United of Manchester won the 2021/22 inaugural tournament, whilst last season the Danes FC Skjold were victorious in the San Siro. This season twelve teams would be doing battle, in four groups of three, playing each other home and away. Our opponents would be tournament veterans KSK Beveren and FC Oslo, themselves making their debut in the competition. It had taken months to get to this point, trying to organise the fixtures over the next few months, with the complication that FC Oslo’s season was at an end and wouldn’t start again until March. I’m sure that clubs who play in European tournaments have someone, or a team of people who focus on the logistics of travel and hosting teams from overseas. But the clubs involved in the Fenix don’t have the luxury of such resources. Which is why at 8.30am I was at Gatwick Airport waiting to welcome our visitors from FC Oslo, hoping that they had booked their flights and were on the Norwegian Air flight due to have landed 30 minutes ago. I’d already caused a mile-long queue at the single manned ticket desk at the airport’s train station by buying 64 return tickets (32 to Brighton, 32 to Lewes from Brighton), which caused the Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 37 ticket machine to overheat, and print a dozen or so more tickets than required. Thankfully, they were and as my “Welcome to England” gift to them, I bought 32 Greggs sausage rolls and passed them around the squad. Yes, they may have got up at 4am but in that moment, I could see in their eyes it was worth it. Professional clubs would have been transported to their hotel by a luxury coach, but we don’t conform to standard at Lewes. Instead, we would be on the 9.31pm Thamslink service to Brighton, where the team would be ensconced in the luxurious Ibis Hotel. Once at the hotel, the party took over reception. Whilst it is unfeasible that they would have 16 rooms ready at 10am, it was also in their interest to get as many of the squad out of reception where tiredness was already kicking in, hoping that they would feel too tired to play when it came to kick off. I left the chaps to have a few hours “free time” in Brighton, recommending a trip down to the Pier, through the Lanes and of course, a swim in the sea. We had arranged a tour of the town for them, but they were too tired to walk too far and instead took them to the Royal Oak, where we had rented upstairs for them to relax in, in the very same room in 1885 where another group of men decided to form a team and play down the hill at The Dripping Pan. The historical reference was lost on many of them. An hour before kick-off I was standing on the pitch in front of the BBC cameras, ready to do a “down the line” interview, where someone unseen to me in a studio somewhere was asking the questions. I wasn’t alone as a lost in translation issue had seen FC Oslo captain Ivar Erlien Furu emerge in full kit to do the interview rather than the CEO that we’d ask them for. Not to be deterred, the first question was fired at Ivar – “You’ve had a long journey to Lewes. Have you had a chance to look around the town and enjoy some of the countryside?”. Ivar carefully considered the question, then answered with a steely stair at the camera, “no”. It was a cagey opening few minutes, with both sides feeling each other out. With well over 1,000 in the ground, this was one of, if not, the biggest crowds the Norwegians had ever faced. Wave after wave of Lewes pressure buffeted against the Norwegian rock at the back. Both Deon Moore and Kalvin Lombombo Kalaha (aka KLK) had the beating of their full-backs and the two combined in the 15th minute, the former’s cross was nodded in at the far post by the latter. It ended 1-0. A good work out for both sides with big games ahead. Lewes hadn’t been at their most fluent best, but it had been an opportunity to get minutes in the legs of a few of the squad and they’d done well. At the far end of the ground four fans cut a lonely picture on the open terrace as they cheered on the Norwegians. It turns out they weren’t Norwegians, nor were they from anywhere near Scandinavia. A bit closer to home – Worthing. Instead of watching their side take on Havant & Waterlooville, they had incurred the cost of travelling to Lewes and paid for tickets to Lewes just so they could show the 1,100 other fans how much they didn’t like Lewes. After the game the FC Oslo players signed shirts and posed for photos with them which hopefully left them with some positive memories of their trip to The Dripping Pan.
