2 DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Lions Good afternoon and welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all associated with London Lions ahead of this afternoon’s league fixture. Another difficult afternoon awaits us as we look for an elusive win that feels like an eternity since getting. Unfortunately, the Shefford game was postponed so we should in theory be fresh going into the game. We are expecting another tough encounter with London Lions this afternoon and we will have to be at it. I won’t lie. I am filled with a wide range of emotions regarding this season. I am deeply disappointed that with only 10 games left that we unfortunately must resign ourselves to another season in the Spartan South Midlands Premier. All I can offer to you all is my apologies for not reaching our goal. I never hid from wanting to get us out of this league this season and quite frankly, expected us to be fighting at this point for promotion. I could never have foreseen the events of this season unfolding the way they have done. I wanted so much to do it for my chairman, all my directors and for every one of you supporters that have given me unwavering support from day one. I am filled with guilt at not achieving the goal that I set and the goal that I am sure you would all have expected us to achieve. Unfortunately, we look very likely to fall a long way short of our target, bar a miracle. We have 8 home games left and 2 on the road and now it is very much a case of keeping an eye on the future. It’s a period of reflection that Is required by us all and about setting a plan moving forward that ultimately gets Dunstable Town FC back to Step 4. There are invaluable lessons I have learned this season. My personality is fiercely loyal to people around me and that has bitten me in the rear end. Players were financially rewarded that did well for us last season and the season before that. I like to reward players that did well and pay them what they deserve, not what I can get away with. I have felt massively let down by the investment in people this season. I have done as much self-analysis as I can possibly do. I have shared my selfanalysis with many who are quick to criticise me for being overly self-critical. I however don’t accept being overcritical as I remind myself of the targets set against what we have achieved throughout the season. Durcs, Anthony, Adam Ashton nor I took any form of a pay rise this season. The players did accept their pay rises and I accept that. Unfortunately, we haven’t received value for money and that is the harsh, brutal reality of the situation. Our inability to string consistent performances and consistent team selections has been an issue. I have been fed up with players reporting HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 injuries, then being fit, then being injured again, then being unavailable and for me, it has been an unbelievable hinderance. I have a great relationship with Andrew, Neil and all the Directors and at some point, we will all sit down and hatch a plan for the club moving into next season. Before we get to any conversations, we have 10 league games we want to win. At no point this season do I have any desire for us to experiment at the detriment of results. I hate losing and I hate drawing and winning is an addiction. I want to win 10 games and I want to ensure there are some much needed answers to questions going into the summer. We need to see who can realistically take the club forward in the summer. Too many have managed to survive through circumstances without really delivering the tangible performances required to warrant their time here. Alex Butt and Sean Locke-Hart have both shown reliability and offer a very promising glimpse into the future. They both want to be here; they both work incredibly hard and look after themselves and are excellent people. We need more of them. Aiden Kavanagh and his older brother Connor Kavanagh are another 2 players that fit the exact same mould and aren’t far off their debuts. It isn’t to say that everyone we have are bad lads and that they should all be moved on but too many have massively underdelivered and their time is coming to an end. Football has always been and will always be judged by numbers, results, and performances. Have our performances deserved more points this year? Yes, I feel they have. There have been so many games where we have been dominant and either got beat or come away with a point which without a doubt effects confidence. Do we deserve to be in the promotion mix this season? Honestly, no we don’t. We have been nowhere near good enough over the course of 28 games to justify saying we should be pushing for promotion. No-one will take more responsibility for this season’s shortfall than I will. The buck always stops with me. Luckily, I have broad shoulders, both figuratively and metaphorically and, I have Kevlar skin in which criticism doesn’t penetrate my core. I look in the mirror daily and analyse myself. Despite the disappointment in league position, I can say it’s not due to a lack of effort or desire. I and we, as in Durcs and Anthony have done the best we possibly could. A failing in the results is a number of things that have led us to the less than desirable outcome. The support we have received from everyone at the club has been terrific and incredibly humbling. I feel as though people who know us, know that it isn’t down to a lack of effort. It’s over the course of 30+ games inclusive of cups we just haven’t been good enough. It hurts me to say that but as the great saying goes “The truth hurts”. We have a duty as a team and by team, I mean me, Durcs, Anthony, Adam, Steve Lewington and all the players to deliver each game as though it is our last. Tomorrow is never promised in life or in football and I assure you all that the beach towels, flip flops and suncream can wait in storage until June! There is not one thought that enters my mind to just see this season out. I want to enjoy the last 10 games and embrace every minute of this season. The reality is that you can only enjoy games properly when you win. 2nd place is always 1st loser in my mind, it always has been, and it always will be. Thank you for all the support you show us all, it hasn’t always been deserved this season but its enormously appreciated. Enjoy the game.

4 DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Lions A very warm welcome to the committee, supporters, players, and coaching staff from London Lions. On a Tuesday evening in October, unfortunately marked by heavy rain, our team encountered a significant challenge at Rowley Lane. The Lions triumphed with a decisive 4-3 victory, with all their goals scored by Austin Lipman. We hope that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, a future encounter may occur under more favourable weather conditions, allowing us to fully appreciate both the competition and the Rowley Lane facilities on a pleasant Saturday afternoon. In the form table the Lions are sitting in 8th place with ten points from their last six games, while we sit in 19th place with three points from the last six games. However, Saturday’s performance “away” at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos showed this incantation of Joe Deeney’s style of football is learning its trade fast. Two down with three minutes plus stoppage time on the clock and up popped Joe Sellers-West in his 100th game for the Club to score an absolute beauty and lift everyone’s spirits. Then in the 95th minute Ricardo Green showed the reason why you should run until you drop, seized on a loose ball & punished the Aylesbury defence in the most clinical way possible. One point felt like three, just as it had done on Tuesday evening when Bedford came to town for the second time in just three weeks. A radical overhaul of the squad meant a full debut for 17 year old Alex Butt and 20 year old Josh Hatton who had moved from Leighton Town only hours before kick off. In goal was 18 year old Sean Locke-Hart, almost a veteran with two games already under his belt earlier in the season where he had conceded only two goals in over 180 mins of football. Anyone who thought the game was a formality and all the away team needed to do was turn up and we’d roll over and allow them to knock in another six, was pleasantly surprised as the Blues turned in their best performance of the season to stifle the League’s top goalscorers, and thanks to the ever-green silky skills of Joe Reynolds who bagged a late volley to give us our first two all draw of the week. Josh Hatton scored on his debut and the Team, to a man, did just as instructed and reaped the rewards and the accolades. Deservingly so. In a season of disappointment and few successes to cheer and raise the roof this two all draw felt like a win, and a bloody good one too. Alex Butt deservedly received the Man of the Match award and Joe’s faith in his chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 young charges was rightfully rewarded by a fearless and inspired display. Ignore the Twitter trolls. They have as much insight into the inner workings of the Club and the mood in the dressing room and Boardroom as I have of their lives. We’re all good thank you and are looking ahead to next season and not behind at this one. Who’s your money on for the League title and instant promotion to Step 4? The top of the table clash between MK Irish & Real Bedford on Saturday drew a crowd of 515 in which neither side gave any quarter with the game finishing goalless. It was probably a better point for Bedford than for MK Irish, but the Bletchley men still have three games in hand over their opponents who still occupy the automatic promotion position. Bedford are 4 points ahead of MK Irish with goal differences of 74 and 70 respectively. However, Bedford have hit a bit of a bump in the road securing “only” nine points from their last six games compared to MK Irish’s haul of sixteen from eighteen possible points. The race to the promised land of the Southern League Central Division 1 looks set to go to the wire. In our own all small way, we could still play a part in determining where the silverware goes. We play Bedford away on Saturday March 23rd & then a week later play MK Irish at Creasey Park on Saturday March 30th. The home game against MK Irish is then followed in the evening with a DTFC Darts Tournament which will be attended by all the First Team players and coaching staff. We’re hoping as many supporters as possible stay on for the event as this will be an ideal time to meet and chat with Joe & the players, while those of you with a steady hand and fancy standing on the oche please contact Claire Lewis (claire. dunstabletownfc@gmail.com) for more details on how to join the competition. Next up at Creasey Park is Baldock Town on Tuesday 19th March quickly followed by another home game on Thursday v Shefford Town & Campton. However, before then the matter in hand is today’s game against London Lions. Enjoy the match. Be loud, be proud and be Joe’s 12th Man. But please be respectful towards our opponents and the match officials.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history London Lions The club was established as MALEX in 1995 by Maccabi Association London who were seeking a new challenge beyond Sunday league football. The new club joined Division One of the Hertfordshire Senior County League. In 1999 they were renamed London Lions but remained an all-Jewish club. Their first season under the new name saw them win the Division One title, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2006–07 the club won the Herts Centenary Trophy, beating Metropolitan Police in the final. The club were initially based at the International University in Bushey, Watford before moving several times and playing at grounds including the Copthall Stadium in Hendon and the Gosling Stadium. In 2002 they relocated to Rowley Lane in Arkley. However, when the club were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League in 2010, they were required to groundshare at St Albans City, Broxbourne Borough and Hemel Hempstead Town as Rowley Lane did not have floodlights or a stand. In normal times, week in, week out, thousands of players and families of all ages play or watch sport, enjoying being with their teammates and friends and competing in healthy outdoor activity. For everyone from age five to the over 55s, Rowley Lane provides outstanding facilities that are a credit to our community. Six pitches, a floodlit stadium, 3G facilities, clubhouse and changing rooms, an on-site nursery and 50 acres of green land – the facilities are unrivalled. Originally known as the Laing Sports Club, Rowley Lane underwent a transformation when it was acquired by the London Lions Football Club. The club, originating from the former M.A.L. Club, sought a permanent establishment to cultivate a stable future and expand beyond solely a men’s football team. This marked a departure from their previous nomadic existence. However, the grand scale of their aspirations and the subsequent growth that would follow was likely beyond their initial expectations. A youth section was quickly established and over time significant investment was made in more pitches, including an artificial 3G pitch that catered for a huge number of teams, making it one of the biggest and best grass roots sports centres in Hertfordshire and the biggest centre for Jewish sport in the country. Despite the remarkable progress of the London Lions first team, as they ascended the leagues to compete at higher levels and participate in prestigious tournaments like the FA Cup, the existing facilities struggled to keep pace. Consequently, the team was compelled to resume their nomadic existence to comply with the regulations associated with playing in superior leagues. This arrangement aimed to afford Jewish footballers the opportunity to compete at the highest possible level. However, a significant turning point occurred in 2015 when the Alan Mattey

12 DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Lions Stand, named in honour of a former player who passed away in 2006, was unveiled. Additionally, investment in new infrastructure, including a top-tier pitch, enabled the first team to return to their home ground, as the club redirected resources to enhance the available facilities once again. Rowley Lane today is a hub of daily sport, whether training or matches, to give kids and adults the chance to compete at all ages and a range of abilities; all with the Jewish community at its heart. Maccabi London FC is at the centre of activity, now with girls’ football growing each year too. When the Brady Maccabi Youth and Community Centre finally closed in 2008, the board along with the London Maccabi and Maccabi Foundation trustees felt it was right to move to Rowley Lane with the idea of joining forces with Maccabi London Lions in the years to come. The merger of Maccabi London Lions and Brady Maccabi finally came to fruition in 2019 and it saw the start of a new era for the Jewish community at Rowley Lane, but it will never forget its history and its journey via the East End of London, Compayne Gardens and Edgware. As well as this, Rowley Lane has been home to lacrosse, cricket, a Herts football refereeing development centre and many other sporting and social events. Rowley Lane also serves as a key training hub for the Great Britain Maccabiah Games squad who compete in international tournaments, representing the best in sporting excellence in our community. Maccabi London Lions were Premier Division runners-up in 2008–09 and went on to win the league in 2009–10, resulting in promotion to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League. They won the Herts Centenary Trophy for a second time the following season with a 3–2 win over Letchworth Garden City Eagles in the final. In 2012–13 the club won the Division One title, resulting in promotion to the Premier Division. However, they finished bottom of the Premier Division the following season and were relegated back to Division 1. After finishing seventeenth in Division One in 2014–15, Maccabi London Lions dropped back into the Premier Division of the Hertfordshire Senior County the last five games London Lions w1-2 a l3-2 a w1-2 a w1-2 a l1-2 h

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 League. Renamed Maccabi London Lions, they won the Anagram Records Trophy in 2015–16. The following season saw the club win the Herts Centenary Trophy, the league’s Aubrey Cup and the Premier Division title, resulting in promotion back to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League. In 2017–18 the club won the Division One Cup with a 3–1 win over Southall in the final. The following season saw them win the Herts Centenary Trophy, defeating Belstone 5–1 in the final. London Lions faced an unusual outcome in both the FA Cup and Vase tournaments in the 2020-21 season, encountering an early elimination against the same opponent. In the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, they were defeated by Walthamstow with a score of 2-3 at the Wadham Lodge stadium in August. A subsequent encounter took place in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, where London Lions once again faced Walthamstow and suffered a 1-3 defeat. Following the curtailment of the 2020–21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club won the Gladwish Spring Cup, an emergency competition organised by the league. At the end of the 2020–21 season Maccabi London Lions were transferred to Division One of the Combined Counties League, which the club won at the first attempt to earn promotion to the Premier North Division; later completing a double by winning the Division One Challenge Cup. In addition to their successful league campaign, the club demonstrated commendable progress in the FA Vase, advancing to the 4th Round. Along the way, they achieved victories against formidable opponents such as St Panteleimon, Thetford Town, and New Salamis. However, their journey came to an end with a disappointing 6-0 defeat at the hands of Coventry Sphinx. During their previous venture into Step 5 football, the club experienced a dismal season, finishing at the bottom of the league table, managing to secure only three victories. Nevertheless, the team remained optimistic about their upcoming campaign, strongly believing that they could achieve improved results. With early exits from the FA competitions and a departure from the County Cup due to defeat against local Championship club Watford, the club was able to shift their focus towards the league. Despite facing a points deduction, they demonstrated resilience and determination, ultimately attaining a commendable 11th place finish in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Premier North Division. Upon the release of the league allocations by the FA, London Lions made a generous gesture by voluntarily surrendering their place in the Combined Counties league to Ardley United. The latter team had lodged an appeal against their initial placement in the Spartan South Midlands League. As a result of Ardley’s successful appeal, they were subsequently transferred back to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League for the 2023–24 season. today’s visitors London Lions

32 DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Lions If Sky and the Premier League announced a 9pm Saturday night kick off, there would be outrage. It would be inconceivable that such a kick off slot would be chosen for a local derby or high-profile game, with the police wanting to avoid any alcohol fuelled high jinx. But in Spain, it’s a regular occurrence. Even when fixtures are set with less than a couple of weeks’ notice, and with the away fans having no means to return home after the game, it’s accepted by all. This week’s game saw Celta Vigo host Real Sociedad – a journey from San Sebastián to Vigo of 475 miles each, 7 hours in a car or 7 days walking if you were following the El Camino de Santiago. Now that’s a fixture change to really kick up a fuss about. With the freezing weather in England ripping apart the fixture list, and having a free Saturday on the cards, the Football Tourist crystal ball suggested a trip to Galicia, to see Celta Virgo’s game. Ryanair delivered in terms of decent timed flights at less than £15 and it was game on. Alas, I had to pass on a second game over the weekend, leaving Danny to go solo to A Coruna for their third-tier match on Sunday night against Ponferradina. But we had the pleasure of a late tapas lunch and then a wander around the compact city centre of Vigo, the setting, as all literature aficionados will know of Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, a challenge for any serious ground hopper to complete in their lifetime. The Estadio Municipal de Balaídos is a fair walk out of the centre, as we would find out later when we couldn’t get a taxi post-match. Owned by the city council, it was initially opened in 1928 and then Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 went through significant redevelopment for the 1982 FIFA World Cup where it hosted Italy’s three group stage games. In 2017 further redevelopment began, starting by rebuilding one of the end stands, removing the curvature and bringing the fans right up to the action. The final work will see the Gol end demolished and rebuilt bringing the capacity up to 31,000 but there’s no timescales for that. Despite over ninety minutes until kick off, the bars around the stadium were rocking. We chose Nuovo Balaídes, with its walls adorned with Celta scarves, memorabilia and the hub for the requisite bocadillo purchasing for half time. Celta Vigo hold several records in Spanish football. Alas, none are related to on the field success. Having the longest running shirt sponsorship deal (Citroen from 1985 to 2016) or 24 years with one kit manufacturer (Umbro) may not populate the trophy cabinet but means less dusting. The biggest game in their history came back in 2017 when the club reached the semi-finals of the Europa League against Manchester United – an event still celebrated by the fans with plenty sporting half and half scarves from the game. The fans piled into the stadium in the last fifteen minutes before kick-off, a very English trait but just in time for the lights to dim, the club anthem to begin, cumulating in the teams emerging onto the pitch. A few hundred Real Sociedad fans were dotted around, aside from a hundred or so in the away section. One strange chap, wearing a paper chef’s hat decided he was trot around the concourse at the top of the away section for the duration of the game. Nobody knew why but apparently; he did this at other games too. The game was as tight and even as it could be, aside from the result, with former Celta midfielder Brais Méndez scoring the only goal of the game in the 11th minute, a superb effort from 25 yards. Celta thought they had scored themselves ten minutes later, but the referee deemed that when the Sociedad keeper dropped the ball over the line, he was unfairly challenged by a forward. Five minutes before the break Sociedad were forced into a substitution, Aihen Muñoz departing on a stretcher with a leg injury, replaced by Scottish International and former Arsenal midfielder Kieran Tierney. In the 52nd minute Méndez almost had a second, but his shot hit the post. Three minutes later Luca de la Terra forced the visitor’s keeper into a good save. The Celta fans in the stands behind the goal kept the atmosphere up, willing the team to keep the pressure up but there was no cutting edge. Up front for Vigo is former Liverpool striker and club legend, Iago Aspas. At 36 years old he’s not the player he was, understandably but still chased every ball. But ultimately his efforts fell short. Sociedad grabbed all three points. The two sides would meet again on Tuesday night back here at the Balaídos in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey. In the grand scheme of things, the Spanish Cup offers more hope to break the 101-year trophy hoodoo than the league. A short, but very sweet trip. Vigo is a big yes on the Football Tourist map. Just be prepared for an uphill walk on the way back after the game.
