2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Stansted Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and everyone associated with Stansted FC ahead of this afternoon’s clash at Creasey Park. We and Stansted come into the game off the back of an unplanned break. It has been 11 days since Stansted played and we have also been without a game for 18 days. I am sure Stansted are as eager to resume playing as we are, and I am sure the supporters from both sides will be excited to get out and watch a game of football again. An 18-day break in September was certainly not something I had originally wanted but, in all fairness, I believe it has been extremely productive in terms of us resetting and realigning what we are about and getting back on the training pitch. We have managed to get excellent work into the group. I have had a long period of reflection over the last few weeks which has been uncomfortable but again productive. I have a deep intrinsic belief that the most painful moments during any adversity is to look yourself in the mirror and strip everything back to the roots. To go through that catharsis, you need to be prepared to ask yourself some difficult and soul-searching questions. It is too easy to look in the mirror when things are going well full of self-adulation and be narcissistic lapping up all the praise. The harsh reality is that I haven’t enjoyed the highs enough and nor have I allowed myself to revel when things are going well. In addition to that I have also been overly self-critical when things haven’t gone well. When analysing why I haven’t enjoyed this season as much, it was quite a simple conclusion in the end. There have been a contingent within the group that haven’t been good for each other this season. There has been an “entitlement culture” that has crept in and from out of nowhere which has led to excuses and subsequently poor performance levels. The equation I have learned which is Entitlement + Excuses = Energy Sappers! If you are to ever be successful in any industry you need to ensure you have everyone aligned and on the same journey. Accountability starts with the individual and to progress with me at our club we all need to own our actions, acknowledge our shortcomings and get back to the absolute cornerstone of my own personal philosophy. I developed an acronym many years ago on a sun lounger in much warmer climates about the type of individuals I want with me. The acronym is HEROIC. Hardworking, Energetic, Resilient, OpenMinded, Intense and Consistent. They are the 6 qualities that I want from every individual. Already by the 6 qualities I HEAD COACH JOE DEENEY 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 demand you can draw conclusions as to why we have started so poorly. We haven’t displayed those key qualities anywhere near enough this season which has been both disappointing but surprising. If we can get back to the key “HEROIC” principles that our Dunstable Town teams have been synonymous with in recent years, then we will start to progress to how I want us to be. I feel revitalised, re-energised, focused and like a kid at Christmas. I cannot wait for 3pm and to hopefully see the excellent work from the lads on the training pitch bear fruit where it really matters. There is always trepidation at the time of writing which is on a Thursday. We have a training session to come, and life sometimes can throw unavailability and illness at you that sees Plan A dissipate in rapid fashion. I am hopeful that we can field a group of players this afternoon that is the same we have been working with in recent weeks. There has been a huge difference to the group over the last 2 weeks. Selection will be based upon attitude and application first and foremost. The message during one of my many impassioned speeches to the group have been clear and concise, the dictatorship is back, and the democracy is over! It is now the Management team’s way or hit the motorway and go somewhere else. Whether it is seen as “old school” I don’t really care. The “group” consisting of individuals have shown that when left to mutterings and murmurings, disrupt each other and no good can come of that. When we first came in, we moved a load of players out that didn’t fit the attitude and application we wanted. We bought in hungry players that would give everything and what at times we lacked in quality we made up with heart, grit, and sheer desire. You don’t need to be a genius to work out how our group will look over the remainder of this season. The line has been drawn, some have been moved on with more to follow and now there is a fresh impetus to see a Dunstable Town side that excites, entertains and most importantly and I mean MOST IMPORTANTLY, WINS! We owe it to our supporters as much as anyone who have had to endure some exceptionally substandard performances by our own standards. The messages have been made crystal clear to the group and that has seen some changes to the group which unfortunately has seen some players depart. I have never been afraid to make decisions and as I’ve stated before on several occasions there is no room for sentiment or nostalgia there is only room for winning games. One of the most painful things I have seen in recent weeks is that I have seen similarities from players to the group we inherited a couple of years ago. I am experienced enough to know that today and for the many upcoming fixtures we can never guarantee a result but what we can guarantee is a much greater output in terms of running. I don’t want to give away tactical secrets and how we are going to set up, but we have a way we are looking to play that I believe can get us back to winning ways, get the Creasey crowd excited and reward you all with a performance that win, lose, or draw we can all be proud of. Our sole focus this afternoon is ensuring we find a way to get the 3 points and give our season the adrenaline shot in the arm that we have in our capabilities. Enjoy today’s game.
4 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Stansted It’s a pleasure to welcome all of you to Creasey Park today as we celebrate the first of what we hope will be many more Family Days to come. After rain of biblical proportions over the last few days it’s nice to be going into autumn with some mild and sunny weather. A special welcome to our visitors from Stansted. They’re new to the Spartan League this season and are the Club we will be travelling furthest to on our travels. We wish all our visitors from Stansted an enjoyable afternoon in our company and a safe journey at 5pm. Its 18 days since we last kicked a ball in competitive action. We were well worth the point we got away at Baldock on the 12th September. Robbie Goodman’s swooping header late in the game ensured we didn’t go home empty handed following the poor display at Harpenden three days earlier. Joe will be the first to admit that the season hasn’t started the way he had expected it to or planned for. We haven’t achieved the consistently high standards we reached at the end of last season with five consecutive wins in just 11 days, including the two superlative away wins at promoted Stotfold & promotion rivals Risborough. We looked as good as anyone in the League both then and during the 13 game run at the start of the season when 11 wins, one draw and one defeat was the almost perfect start to the season. The periods in between were badly affected by injuries, suspensions and some appalling refereeing decisions that cost us dearly. But I think deep down there was that feeling that we were so nearly there but weren’t quite the finished product yet. Behind the scenes it’s been a busy and emotional week. Our stalwart volunteer, Kristy Lewington, stepped down from her Club roles to prioritise family time. Kristy has worn many hats at the Club and without hesitation always offered to step in and help when a job needed to be done. It didn’t matter whether it was helping in the Boardroom, operating the turnstiles, washing and repairing the kit, driving injured players to hospital or to their homes, registering players, sorting out the Club’s affiliation to Beds FA or acting as Club Welfare Officer. Kristy did them all. We all owe Kristy a huge debt of gratitude for seven years of service to the Club. I’ve been delighted by the positive response from colleagues who realised the magnitude of the situation when chairman andrew madaras 1883-2023 140 YEARS DUNSTABLE TOWN FC
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 5 Kristy stepped down and have come forward to take on some of her roles. It’s been a steep learning curve in making sure that we always have someone suitably trained and qualified to step into a person’s shoes if they become unwell or move on at short notice, so my thanks also to everyone who has put their shoulder to the wheel these last few days. Our special guest today is Carol Solaiman who heads up Carers in Bedfordshire. We’ve developed a partnership with Carol and her team & are especially pleased that she’s given up some of her day off to come and promote the work her charity does. The first meeting I had with Carol opened my eyes to a hidden world of family members caring for both older and younger members of the family. When Carol told me about the figures regarding the numbers of young children caring for their parents or siblings I knew we had to be better informed and aware of how we can best support carers who belong to our Club. After today’s game we have consecutive Saturday fixtures away from home at Shefford & Campton next Saturday and then Tring the following Saturday before meeting Arlesey Town at Creasey Park on Tuesday October 17th. Enjoy today’s game, be loud and be proud of our lads but please show respect to today’s officials and opponents. Andrew Madaras

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 the history Stansted Although there are mentions of the club’s existence in 1892, the official founding date is attributed to when the club relocated to Green Meadow. Over the years, the club has produced several noteworthy players who have continued their careers at the professional level. Among them are Gary Hart, who represented Brighton & Hove Albion; Alfie Potter, known for his time at Oxford United; Dwight Gayle, who went on to play for Crystal Palace and Newcastle United; and Lewis Amos, who ventured to the United States and played professionally for the Northern Virginia Royals and Tulsa Revolution. In 1914 and 1922, Stansted Football Club emerged victorious in the Stansted & District Challenge Cup. As the 1930s arrived, they transitioned to competing in the East Herts League and achieved success by clinching the league title in 1934-35. In 1937, Stansted Football Club relocated to the former Hargrave Estate, where both the cricket ground and the surrounding land became their new home. After World War Two, the club found themselves competing in the London League Division One. The London League was a football competition held in the London and surrounding areas of southeast England from 1896 until 1964. In 1964, the London League ceased to exist as it merged with the Aetolian League, resulting in the formation of the Greater London League. Subsequently, in 1971, the Greater London League merged with the Metropolitan League to create the Metropolitan-London League. This league, in turn, merged with the Spartan League, ultimately evolving into the modern Spartan South Midlands League. In1956 the club was granted entry into the Herts Senior County League and eventually reached the Premier Division in 1956. However, their performance faltered, leading to relegation to Division One in 1964-65, where they remained until becoming founding members of the Essex Senior League in 1971. The inaugural season of the newly formed Essex Senior League comprised a mere 9 clubs, resulting in a condensed schedule of 16 games. Stansted, unfortunately, struggled throughout the season, securing only one victory, and ultimately finishing at the bottom of the league table. Regrettably, this pattern persisted during the 1970s, as Stansted consistently found themselves in the bottom three positions of the league standings throughout the decade. However, the 1972-73 season proved to be a remarkable exception, as the team managed to secure a third-place finish. This standout season saw them achieve seven wins in their eighteengame campaign, finishing just 10 points behind the champions, Billericay Town. The club experienced a thrilling rollercoaster ride throughout the 1980s. In the Essex Senior League, they had their fair share of ups and downs. The decade witnessed three seasons where they found themselves in the bottom four, three seasons with mid-table finishes, and an impressive four seasons with top-five finishes.
12 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Stansted The early 1980s marked a successful period for the club as they consistently improved season after season. The league had expanded to include 17 teams, providing more competition. An early highlight of this era came in the 1982-83 season when they finished as runners-up. Their remarkable performance included an impressive tally of 22 wins, falling just short of the title by a mere two points, with Heybridge Swifts claiming the championship. In the remarkable 1983/84 season, they achieved significant success, including reaching the final of the FA Vase, where they triumphed over Stamford with a 3-2 victory. During that same season, they secured victories in the East Anglian Cup, the League Challenge Cup, and the Eastern Floodlit Cup. Notably, they set a record margin of victory in the league by defeating Coggeshall Town 15-0. The 1990s proved to be a challenging decade for Stansted, as the club struggled to achieve consistent success. Wins in double figures in a single season were a rare occurrence, and they found themselves finishing at the bottom of the league on three separate occasions during this period. However, there were glimpses of progress for the club, particularly in their participation in the FA Cup during the late 1990s. After a 47-year hiatus from the competition, Stansted returned to the FA Cup stage with their first game held at Hargrave Park in August 1996, facing off against Aveley. In a hardfought match, the Airportmen emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline. Along the way, they triumphed over Hemel Hempstead and Hampton. In the 3rd Qualifying Round, Stansted embarked on a journey to the historic cathedral city of St Albans to face off against The Saints, a team competing in the Isthmian Premier League. Unfortunately, the magnitude of the occasion overwhelmed Stansted, and they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of their higher-tier opponents. The arrival of the new century did not bring significant improvement in league form for Stansted. They endured difficult times, finishing at the bottom of their division in both the 2005-06 and 2006- 07 seasons. In the FA Cup, they failed to progress beyond the 1st Qualifying Round during this period. Similarly, in the FA Vase, Stansted couldn’t make it past the First Round, facing early exits from the competition. the last five games Stansted w2-4 a w3-0 h l3-4 h L2-3 h L2-4 h
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 13 In the memorable 2009-10 season, Stansted achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching their firstever Essex Senior League title. They displayed an outstanding performance throughout the campaign, finishing six points ahead of the runners-up, Witham Town. With an impressive tally of 22 wins and a prolific scoring record of 99 goals, they asserted their dominance in the league and claimed the well-deserved championship. However, their promotion hopes were dashed due to Hargrave Park failing to meet the necessary criteria. The subsequent season saw them finish as runners-up, as they narrowly missed out on winning the league after a points deduction was imposed. In addition to their success in the Essex Senior League, Stansted also had an impressive run in the Vase competition, following an early exit from the FA Cup. Their Vase campaign featured two notable home victories, demonstrating their strength on familiar turf. They then continued their winning streak with notable triumphs on the road, defeating Stanway Rovers based in Colchester and securing an impressive 4-1 victory at Bodmin Town, after a gruelling 300- mile journey. The remarkable journey finally concluded back at Hargrave Park in the 5th Round, where they faced a tough challenge from Dunston UTS, a team based in Gateshead. Despite their best efforts, Stansted were defeated 2-0 by the strong opposition, bringing an end to their Vase campaign. In the 2018/19 season, the club once more finished as runners-up, falling short in the title race to Hullbridge Sports, despite enjoying periods at the top throughout the season. Nevertheless, the club managed to secure an ESL cup double, lifting both the Errington Challenge Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy in the previous season. Following the pandemic-induced break, Stansted carried their positive momentum into the 2021-22 season, delivering a strong performance in the league. They secured a commendable top-four finish, however, despite their overall success, a slight dip in form emerged during the latter stages of the season. With only two wins in their last eight games, Stansted faced challenges that potentially hindered their chances of securing promotion. Last season Stansted experienced a downturn in their league form, resulting in a mid-table finish. However, their journey in the Vase competition provided a silver lining, albeit ending in the 2nd Round with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Norwich United in Norfolk. Looking ahead to the upcoming 2023-24 season, the club received news from the FA regarding their club allocations. Surprisingly, Stansted found themselves laterally moved into the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, marking a significant departure from their longstanding affiliation as founder members of the Essex Senior League since 1974. In response, the club lodged an appeal with the FA, albeit unsuccessfully. today’s visitors Stansted

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 31 SSMFL premier division match report The recent League fixture between Harpenden Town and Dunstable Town drew a substantial crowd of 427 spectators, thanks in part to the significant presence of Dunstable fans who made the journey to support their team. The match marked a historic occasion for Harpenden Town as it was the first competitive game played on their new 4G surface. The newly developed facility boasts modern terracing, stands, and hardstanding supporter areas, providing a state-of-the-art platform for the town’s players to showcase their talents. The backdrop of the scorching hot weather added an extra layer of intensity to the contest. However, for Dunstable Town, the outcome of the game was a step back from their recent form, where they had managed to secure seven points from the previous three matches. The frustration and disappointment were palpable, and these emotions were evident in the candid post-match interview with Joe Deeney, the team’s manager. In his typical fashion, Joe acknowledged Harpenden’s welldeserved victory and praised their performance on the day. Still, he couldn’t help but express his bewilderment at the inconsistencies plaguing his team, likening them to a complex puzzle that is challenging to solve. The match began with Dunstable creating promising opportunities in the early minutes, but they failed to convert them into goals. Unfortunately, their missed chances came back to haunt them as Harpenden Town took the lead just ten minutes into the game. What followed was a competitive halfhour of play where both teams showed their mettle, but just before the halftime whistle, Harpenden Town managed to extend their lead, making it 2-0. The second half of the match didn’t bring the desired change in fortunes for Dunstable Town. Harpenden Town continued to capitalize on their momentum, adding two more goals to their tally. The final scoreline reflected a somewhat one-sided contest, which might have been harsh on Dunstable considering the effort they put in and the chances they created. Despite the disappointing result for Dunstable Town, it was clear that the day belonged to Harpenden Town. Not only did they secure a convincing victory on the pitch, but the atmosphere in the newly developed facility was undoubtedly electric, with the large crowd showing their support for the home side. In conclusion, the League fixture between Harpenden Town and Dunstable Town was a historic occasion, marked by the unveiling of Harpenden’s impressive new 4G surface and facilities. While the outcome was disappointing for Dunstable Town, their manager acknowledged the merits of the home side’s performance and remained determined to unravel the team’s inconsistencies. It’s clear that both teams will continue to work hard and strive for success in future fixtures, making the League even more exciting for fans and enthusiasts alike.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 35 dunstable town fc dtfc vets Matchweek 4 and coming off the back of an impressive win we travel to the Beds FA for a local Derby against Dunstable Town Youth. Town have started the season fairly well with some good performances but are still at times adjusting to the 9 aside league as well as being guilty of rushing their football and not showing the composure that their age demands. Town started to play with a bit of purpose with some lovely interchanging play between Keeble and Golding leading to the first clear chance of the game when an overlapping Keeble run was found smartly with a cheeky nutmeg by Golding, but unfortunately, Keeble’s shot was saved well by the keeper. With pressure growing a long throw into the box caused confusion between Potter and the defenders allowing for the Youth ST to prod the call home from a yard out 1-0 Youth. Another Keeble chance as a long throw by Golding fell into the onrushing path of the flying fullback who caught his first time volley a little too well sending his effort over the bar from 5 yards out. Pressure grew and a quick throw from Keeble into the feet of Robson 5 yards into the box was quickly followed by the Youth CB stamping on the back of Robson’s leg with the referee having no option but to award an obvious penalty! Robson does what he does best and slotted his 4th of the season away 1-1. After the usual discussion around letting ourselves down and promising to speed up the play the half played out to a rather desperate tone of Town trying in vain to grab a winner with Youth seemingly happy with the point. The town backline was comfortable for the entirety of the half with youth offering little in terms of attacking but defended valiantly to the end. A few tasty tackles as the game whimpered out and the first Dunstable Derby ended in a drab draw.

38 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Stansted It takes just as long to get to Como from London as it does Manchester and based on the state of our railway infrastructure, invariably costs less. So, whilst you could enjoy the delights of Old Trafford and its leaky roof, or various other less salubrious destinations in the north of England, you could fly 90 minutes south-east(ish), hop in a car, and drive 30 minutes and be enjoying some pasta and a glass of Pino Grigio on the edge of Lake Como…and naturally taking in a game. That’s how I had sold this to CMF. “Fancy lunch in Italy on Sunday?”. Of course, she knew there would be strings attached, and I had already done the groundwork…meaning I’d bought tickets that came with “hospitality” for Como 1907’s last home game of the season. Whilst there was a world were both Como and visitors Ternana could still make the complicated Serie B play-offs (both in terms of promotion and relegation), it was unlikely either would be in a prime position and there was a danger this game could be a meaningless match where both teams play for a draw, although that was a thought far from our minds as we touched down in a rainy Milan Malpensa with just 90 minutes to kick off. A massive advantage of watching football in Como is that the stadium is located central to almost everything that is good about the city. The disadvantage of rocking up 10 minutes before kick-off is that there is nowhere to park because it is so central. We got lucky in finding a Fiat 500 leaving a space a short walk from the ground, and although our hire car was *slightly* bigger than the one that departed, the benefit of having a zero excess insurance policy came into play. Car Stuart Fuller is an accomplished author, renowned for his nearly award-winning literary works in “The Football Tourist” book series. He is also Chairman of Lewes FC.
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39 squeezed in, hoping we wouldn’t return to find it damaged we hot-footed down towards the lake edge. We got into the ground just as the tifosi were in full flow in the Curva Como. It was quite a scene, with thousands of them waving their blue and white plastic sheets around. Our seats were at the back of the Tribuna D’Onore and “armed” with our VIP wristbands we could help ourselves to some pre-match snacks and a beer, but it was the view across the Distinti to Lake Como and Switzerland in the distance that was the money shot. There are few stadiums in the world that have such a superb location, which at times is a bit of a distraction to the football. The visitors had brought a hundred or so fans, making the 700+ mile round trip from just northeast of Rome, enjoying the sunshine and the best of the early play, whipping their shirts off to twirl them around their heads. The Stadio Guiseppe Sinigaglia may have an unenviable location but doesn’t meet the ambitions of the club. Whilst a play-off spot for a place in Serie A wasn’t still out of the question with two games to go, a capacity of just 13,600 would make it one of the smallest in the top division. The Curva Como was a scaffold-style stand, whilst the upper tier of the Distinti was out of bounds. It’s no wonder that Technical Director/President/ Administrator (delete as appropriate in what you have read) Dennis Wise, yep that Dennis Wise, is looking to find a location for a new ground. That won’t be popular among many of the fans, and the football tourists like me, but to take the club to the next level and replicate the ambition off the pitch with what’s happening on it, it needs to happen. The away side took the lead in the 32nd minute when César Falletti cut inside the Como defender and fell easily to the floor. It was enough to convince the referee to point to the spot and Favilli slotted it home. At half-time we got to enjoy more Italian hospitality, an irony of some prawn sandwiches (rolls) washed down with Prosecco, and a chat with former Gillingham FC owner Paul Scally, resplendent in his Gills blue suit, who had travelled out to “discuss business with Dennis”. Whatever was said in the Como dressing room it certainly worked. Cesc Fàbregas (yep, the one and same) was hauled off and it gave Como more freedom in midfield, and they were rewarded by three unanswered goals in a fifteenminute spell through Vignali, Da Cunha and Chajia, punctuated in between the equaliser and the 2nd by a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity by Davide Agazzi. There was a real celebratory feel at the full-time whistle. The win had given Como a slim chance at finishing in the top eight, going into the last game. The defeat, their fourth in a row, saw the visitors hopes extinguished. The players and their families slowly left the pitch, and we headed out, although our romantic walk along the lake edge was halted by the 100 or so Carbonari blocking the road, providing 1 on 1 protection for the away fans. A meal sitting in the Duomo square finished off a superb day trip and certainly one that should be on any Football Tourist’s agenda for the next couple of seasons before any decisions are made about the future of the stadium.
