CIRTex is a unique academic center dedicated to advancing textile innovation and
research. It is driven by the primary objective of reinvigorating this important field by
promoting exciting new textile techniques, developing novel materials, diversifying
industrial applications, and increasing awareness of eco-conscious thinking. Work
at CIRTex typically spans academic, industrial, and commercial contexts, leveraging
interdisciplinary expertise in science, engineering, and design.

How we work

CIRTex oversees and coordinates a series of parallel projects, utilizing applied research methodologies that encompass
material prototyping, simulation, modeling, and testing. The unique CIRTex framework is optimized to enable fruitful
collaboration between prominent commercial players, governmental agencies, startups, and individual researchers.
Each of these collaborations is conducted under specific, mutually-agreed terms. Research funding is typically sourced
from an interested commercial entity, or from grants generously provided by governmental entities. CIRTex contributes
key research expertise, team building and facilitation services, as well as convenient access to a sophisticated textile
testing facility and a wide range of manufacturing technologies.

KNITIT: A Computational Tool for Design, Simulation, and Fabrication of Multiple Structured Knits

Type of funding: commercial collaboration, private
The research focused on developing a computational parametric tool for digitally designing and industrially producing
knitted fabrics, creating a direct link between design and manufacturing. The tool includes an integrated physical
simulation component for estimating the fabric deformation. It allows users to visualize and control compensations
in the fabric knitting structure, to better match between the initial graphic intent of the design and the actual physical
knitted fabric outcome.

Developing Fish Skin as A Sustainable Raw Material for The Fashion Industry

Type of funding: EU Funding: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE)

FISHSkin concentrates on developing a new category of raw material for fashion – fish leather. we aim to amalgamate
the Mariculture and Fashion industry by using both the fish flesh and skin as viable, economically useful products.
Circular economy principles combined with state-of-the-art technology and changing consumer tastes – allow us to
challenge existing fashion assumptions and explore the viability of fish leather is this industry. Through secondments
and network training events we will generate knowledge cohesion from different disciplines: Fashion design, Material
science and Marine biology where academic and industrial experts will strive to develop new techniques and
methodologies for a market take up of fish leather at an industrial scale.

Around 20 researchers from Shenkar will take part in this project coming from the departments of Fashion Design,
Industrial Design, Communication Design and Polymer Engineering.

SNOW - Smart Non Woven

Type of funding: Governmental funding through the Israel Innovation Authority
SNOW is a conventional-industry consortium founded as part of MAGNET – Generic Industrial Research Program. The
consortium began its multi-year activity in 2017, with a mandate to develop generic technologies for the production of
smart non-woven fabrics, which are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. For example: liquefying fabrics,
absorbing/releasing heat, pH neutralizing, containing and releasing active skin care components, possessing a uniquely
soft texture or high absorbency, and so on. Products derived from these technologies are expected to target hygienic,
cosmetic, medical, and technical markets.

Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Future Soldier

Type of funding: Governmental funding through the Israel Ministry of Defense Directorate of Defense Research and
Development (DDR&D)
The Israel Ministry of Defense is currently funding two project at CIRTex:
(1) Fiber Reinforced Concrete – development of a composite material for infrastructure damage repair
(2) Future Soldier – electronic sensor fabrics for the future soldier, in collaboration with Tortech Nanofibers
Scientific supervision: Prof. Alva Peled, Dr. Tamir Kamai, Hydrology & Environmental Soil Physics, ARO
The Future Soldier project involves the development of electronic sensors and heating elements fully integrated in a
fabric structure, based on combining fibers produced by Tortech Nanofibers. The fiber-based systems and sensors are
made from Ultra Long Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT).

Color Customization for Interior Textile Products

Type of funding: Startup company, private
Twine Solutions develops a technology called Digital Selective Treatment (DST™) which enables on-demand thread
dyeing, reaching the highest industry standards with an eco-friendly process. Twine’s digitally dyed threads are dyed
along the length of the thread in any color, allowing accurate color definition and gradual transformation between

colors. The collaboration with CIRTex is focused around developing a user-centered application for interior design.
The application automatically generates a range of color propositions for fabric patterns, in relation to an existing and
specific spatial context. The work included the design of a small collection of physical samples which were dyed at
Twine, and weaved in Shenkar.

Textile Flow Analysis TLV

Material Flow Survey, pre-consumer textile waste in Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality  

Type of funding: Municipal - The Environmental Authority, Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality
The Environmental Authority of Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality initiated a Material Flow Survey in order to better understand
the scope and characteristics of textile waste coming from Tel Aviv-Yafo industrial activity, and to contribute towards a
relevant Circular Economy Policy/Initiative.

Raison d'Être

The Edelstein Center was founded in 1991 by the Shenkar Board of Governors
members, Dr. Sidney and Mildred Edelstein, in order to actively perform scientific
and historical studies on Cultural Heritage objects. Special focus at The Center is
given to research the colorants – their natural sources from flora and fauna, and
their associated technological processes – found on archaeological and historic
artifacts. This research field requires a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach,
which combines technological and engineering separation processes, the sciences
(chemistry, malacology, entomology, and botany) with the humanities
(archaeology, history, religion, and the arts). These investigations necessitate the
use of advanced forensic-style instrumental chemical analyses, such as the ones
highlighted in popular police-based TV shows, for example C.S.I., for studying
the make-up of archaeological artifacts, perhaps the ones that Indiana Jones
would have discovered.

The Rose Fashion and Textile Archive

Rose Archive is a unique research and learning center situated at Shenkar and housing Israel's
only collection dedicated to the study of Fashion and Textile as a social-cultural phenomenon.
Established in 1986, as an outcome of successful collaboration with Fashion Institute of
Technology and their significant donation of garments, the archive today features over 5000
fashion pieces, textiles and accessories. By now, the items represent designs from 67
countries, the earliest dating to the 1780s and the most recent ones arriving from latest
fashion shows. Of special interest, is the unique Israeli collection, consisting of garments and
accessories, ranging from the end of the 19th century until today, showcasing the history of
local fashion, its origins, roots and development over the years.
All items are duly cataloged, documented and arranged in a professional museum-standard
conditions at the storage space on Shenkar campus, built in 2018 especially for the needs of
the collection.

Recent years have come to show that fashion exhibitions are the rising star of our cultural
world. Recognizing that, the Rose Archive gives its visitors a rare opportunity to see fashion
history up close. Not only through observing garment structure and applied techniques but
also by means of understanding the way fashion is a part of the social order. Tours and lectures
in the archive give the listeners tools to examine how fashion history impacts today's society
and answer questions of the like: What did women in the 19th century wear under their
dresses? Why was Chanel so important and what does it have to do with Dior? Why did the
shoulder pads of the 1980s grew to such massive proportions? - and many more. The archive
serves as a valuable source for historical and cultural research, available to students,
graduates, designers and academics. Lecturers often engage the garments and textiles from
the archive to illustrate topics related to the evolution of designs, as well as the social,
technological and cultural context they were created in.

As the core collector of international and local textile material, the archive plays an active
role in today's Israeli cultural scene and collaborates with top museums. In the passing year,
the archive assisted in research, item loaning and community reach-out for the retrospective
of local fashion Fashion Statements: Decoding Israeli Dress at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem,
and prepared the special printed edition A Place For Fashion with Steimatzky publishing house
documenting the exhibition. Other than that, the passing year was dedicated to settling in the
new space, packing and unpacking the lot of about 5000 items. After years of the collection
being split in different buildings, moving all the items to one place gave us the opportunity to
finally have an overview of the entire collection. Having the new and dignifying space for
keeping the items, gave us the opportunity to reach out to potential donors, inviting them to
see and appreciate the conditions in which their items will be stored (earning us, among
others, two rare 1958 Dior gowns). Furthermore, for the first time, this year, the archive gave
the general public the opportunity to learn Fashion History. By means of collaboration with
Shenkar's External studies, a special 14 weeks course was offered to the public in the archive.
During the past year we also deepened the connection with the students and visitors, not only
in the archive's class room, but also in a digital way, offering them the knowledge and history
of clothes through our website and social media.

The next year will be dedicated to building a gallery space for exhibitions to be held in the
archive, letting parts of the collection be on view for all. Initiating series of lectures about
various fashion related themes and content for the public ear. Continuing the work on social
media, reaching out to colleagues overseas and placing the archive as a player in the rather
new and fascinating world of fashion theory and research. Alongside finding funding to offer
fashion design students scholarships through working in the archive, connecting the young
generation to history through fabric, clothing and material culture.

The Michal and Dr. Avraham Kadar Design and Technology Center is an interdisciplinary
research and learning center in the field of Interaction Design. Working with students and
faculty from all departments in Shenkar, we create prototypes for novel interactions, focusing
on the interface between people and technology, and on the connection between people and
other people, through interactive technology.
Activities in the center range from courses, workshops, research projects by faculty and
students, to the creation of interactive installations for cultural institutions, to collaborations
with industry on ‘blue sky’ projects involving novel interaction design concepts. The center’s
projects have been presented in international exhibitions and conferences globally.

Research

The main research theme during the last year has been New Interactions In Learning
Spaces. The dramatic changes in learning and teaching - from MOOCs to flipped
classrooms to hybrid learning to adaptive teaching to robotic assistants - raise the
question: how should learning spaces change to accommodate these changes? The
following activities took place within this theme:

Autonomous class

2018 trans-disciplinary course in collaboration with Microsoft. Students from all
departments in Shenkar worked together to develop concepts and prototypes for new
learning experiences, such as a table for trans-disciplinary collaboration.

Conversational robot for a learning space (In process)

Conversational assistants have been shown to help students practice skills by decreasing
self-consciousness. Nicknamed “Kadara”, the conversational robot developed in the center
will converse with students to help introduce the center, locate equipment and learn about
past projects on topics of interest.

Code VR (In process)

For designers, learning to code is a challenge. Over the years we have found that the main
hurdle is making the conceptual leap in understanding how a computer “thinks”. In code
VR, the learning space becomes the space of the software program! The learner stands
within the program and performs coding commands in an embodied and immersive way.

Interdisciplinary learning report for the ministry of education

As a member of the expert committee on “Adapting Curricula and Study Materials for the
21st Century”, Michal has written and presented the chapter on ‘Interdisciplinary Learning’.
This chapter provides theoretical and empirical knowledge on interdisciplinary learning
and teaching towards its introduction into the K-12 school curriculum.

Student learning

Learning happens in the center in both formal and informal ways. Two formal schemes
are: trans-disciplinary courses in which students from all departments work together, and
research projects performed by students from the different Shenkar masters programs.
2019 Trans-disciplinary Courses:

Transparent toys

How can we create interactive toys that are more transparent in revealing their hidden
agendas? How can we design and engineer toys that align with our morals?

Networked meal

Technology is invading the shared meal and ruining this last technology-free haven. Or is it?
This course explored the ways in which technology can enrich the shared eating experience,
within the context of the internet of things.

Internships

A new internship program has been launched in the center, and this year interns from NYU
have spent two semesters working on insightful projects involving learning and interaction.

Work with cultural institutions

The center collaborates with museums and other cultural institutions to create
interactive installations:
Two Riders - The Two Riders installation is on display in the Bremen Science Museum,
moving next to Naples and Ottawa.
Triennale Museum, Milan - "999 Questions on Contemporary Living" - four exhibits of
interactive thresholds that explore the concept of home.
Madaatech Museum, Haifa (in process) - The center has been commissioned to create a
new interactive installation and activity for promoting collaboration between children visiting
the museum.

We continue our path to being Israel’s leading research center on interaction design, and to
widen our impact within Shenkar and outwards into the global research community.

Interaction specialization program

The 2019-2020 school year will see the launching of the Interaction Specialization Program.
In this program, 25 selected students from the different Shenkar departments will specialize
in interaction design and technology as it relates to their “home” discipline. Topics will include
interactive jewelry and clothing, interactive spaces and textiles, dynamic materials and
electronics and software innovations.

The students will study one course per semester in the center; the specialization program will
culminate in a final project exploring interaction in depth.

The Keter Center for Innovation in Engineering
and Design in memory of Joseph Sagol is
Shenkar's unique home for disruptive thinking
in the areas of innovation, creativity, education
and multidisciplinary. Established two years
ago, the Center has hosted numerous events in
cooperation with national and international
organizations, including ZwissTex, The Design
Kids, Woman Entrepreneurship Week,
ProWomen, TAVtech, Birthright and many
others. The Center serves as home to DOTS, the
entrepreneur student organization of Shenkar,
"Omanut Bakehila," a nonprofit organization
that sponsors art teachers in the community,
and several active startup ventures.

Our second TEDxShenkarCollege was held on
June 26th, with an amazing cadre of twelve
speakers, four who travelled from abroad (US,
UK, Italy, Estonia) at their own expense. The
theme this year was "Journey". We were
particularly proud of our Shenkar speakers,
Prof. Roie Zerachia and our award-winning
graduate Orit Dolev. The videos will appear
shortly on the TEDx channel. The TEDx event is
a central project of the innovation center and
includes courses and lectures encouraging
students and teachers to learn how to become
international star speakers.

Recent Activities

The Internship Program  - On June 18th, we
celebrated the successful completion of the 5th
Internship program in collaboration with "Dots"
and "Hadavar Haba". The center is a perfect
place for teaching life skills and encouraging
our students to learning a collaborative format.
Networking Breakfasts  -  entrepreneurs,
students and leading professionals come
together for our special networking breakfasts,
hosted by Jeff Pulver, Internet Pioneer and
Shenkar Fellow.
Birthright Israel Study Abroad - a unique,
two-week journey that allows students to earn
up to 3 college credits through an immersive,
educational experience. "Birthright Israel Study
Abroad" combines all the adventure of a
Birthright Israel experience with world-
renowned learning opportunities from leading
academic institutions.
60's Music Event -  a musical lovefest in
commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of
Woodstock, and in the spirit of the Age of
Aquarius. During the event, Prof. Mel Rosenberg
shared insights from his "Music of the 60s"
class and during each segment, special guests
joined to share stories, sing and perform.

Future Goals and Aspirations

As we now enter our third year of operation our
goals are:

To make the center even more attractive to
the Shenkar academic staff: a great place to
share ideas and concepts and to teach in an
environment that encourages innovation and
lateral thinking. 
To continue to serve as a 'launching pad' for
new pilot courses and lectures.
To continue to serve as a 'landing pad' to 
bring the start up nation to campus. 
To hold podcasts on the subject of
innovation and the future of academic
education.
To be the first academic campus in Israel to
embrace the new TED education initiative.
