1.1. History Background
Firstly, early life of Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah is His father, Syed Nor Albukhary and
his mother, Sharifah Rokiah Syed Mohamed Rahmat are from Hadhramaut, Yemen. Before
decide to stay in Kedah, his father travelled to Central Asia to do business. In the middle 40s,
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar’s father decided to stay in Alor Setar, Kedah. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has
7 siblings and he is the third child. When he was 9 years old, he was sent to lived with his
uncle Syed Omar in Johor Bahru until he’s 14 years old and then he returned to kedah and
went to school at St. Michael Institution. Even though still schooling, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar got
involved in his father’s cattle business. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has been saved his money he
got from his involvement in his father’s cattle business. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar began venturing
into business on his own. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar did not able to take the SPM examination, as
his family could not afford to pay for his examination fees. Then, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar married
with his love one Sharifah Zarah bin Syed Kechik Syed Mohamed Albukhary. After marriage,
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar and his wife, Sharifah Zarah had 7 children.
Career of Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar is The Albukhary Group of Companies. These a
diversified business group consisting of DRB-HICOM, MMC and Tradewinds Plantation. In
May 2020, Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and Multimedia quietly awarded the highly
lucrative 5G telecommunications spectrum contract to known company called Altel, a
subsidiary of Puncak Semangat, a firm primarily controlled by politically connected Malaysian
tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary. The tender grabbed headlines and raised suspicious
of corruption as it was quietly held and awarded without an open tender as promised by the
government.
Besides, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar began his philanthropic work in 1976 when he pledged
half of his salary to underprivileged families and the other half to his mother and siblings. In
year 1996, he founded the Albukhary Foundation and today remains its primary benefactor.
In 2014, he was recognized by Forbes Asia as a Hero of Philanthropy due to his contribution
to refugees in Pakistan, orphans in Guinea and disaster victims in China, Indonesia and Iran.
Lastly, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar founded the (Islamic) Foundation Al-Bukhary in 1996
which has built and managed the Museum of Islamic Art in Kuala Lumpur. The Albukhary
Foundation is an international non-profit charitable organization headquatered in Malaysia
which was founded on the Islamic values of faith (Taqwa) and compassion (Ehsan).

2.0 Why I Choose This Leader
Leadership is ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals and a
process by which one individual influence others toward the attainment of group or
organizational goals. Leadership of theories are schools of thought brought forward to
explain how and why certain individuals become leaders. The theories emphasize that
individuals can adopt to boost their own leadership abilities. Theories that consider
personality, social, physical, or intellectual traits to differentiate leaders from non-leaders.
The reason why I choose Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah Albukhary because he has all the
responsible when it takes to be a good leader in business.
Firstly, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar, he has attitude full with attempted and not scared
to take the challenges. This is because he shows us that attitude since he was teenager
when he cannot to take SPM examination because of his parents not have enough money
to pay his examination fees, but that doesn’t mean he’s lacked of knowledge. A whole lot
of his knowledge and experience was gained through his own entrepreneurship
experience during his youth time. He started working when he was studying where he
helped in the planting of vegetables and selling them in the market while he learnt book
keeping through assisting his father and saved all the money he got to make his own
business. Not only when he was in school, but even now he is still trying to be a good
leader to not give up to his business he had now. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary once
said, when you have attitude full with self-consciousness and scare you must to fight
because its really not good when you want to be a successful
businessman/businesswoman.
This relates with some leadership theories is trait theories which is extroversion
and self-confidence. For example, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar came out of the comfort zone
and was confident that he could do it and was not ashamed to ask anyone who more
experts in business.

Next, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar likes to contribute regardless of the money, food, or
knowledge what he gained. This is because Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has been taught from
kids to always donate to those in need. Therefore, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar established a
museum of Islamic arts and profits from it will be shared to fund charity programs and not
only that, he also did not forget to obey his parents and always give them pleasure by
giving them money and many moreTan Sri Syed Mokhtar once said, do not be too selfish
and proud of the wealth obtained because no matter how far we go and we go through
something that whether bitter or sweet always remembers to give help and benefits, it is
because of this way we get an idea of what problems are faced by people around us
especially our customer.
This relates with some leadership theories is trait theories which is openness and
sincerity. For example, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar never saw himself a rich man and always
sincerely helps those in need because he is the principle human servants of Allah and
Allah is self-sufficient.
Last but not least, some leadership theories are trait theories which emotional
intelligence relates with Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar thinks ahead to further how to make his
business more successfully this because Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar loves to ask and wants to
make some knowledge. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar once said, change the way you think and
thinking like you in first class if you want to be a successful businessman or want to be a
rich. If you quickly give up of thinking, you should throw away that kind of thoughts
because that was so useless.

3.0 What Criteria makes me choose this leader
Every human being has different criteria no matter what happen, what importance
is to give an effectiveness to an individual. Same as Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar, he shows the
criteria that can be used as an emulated and also a lesson to us. What criteria makes me
choose Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar as a leader is his visionary, open risk taker, failure is an
option and observant.
Firstly, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar’s visionary. He has a vision to improve the living
standards of their families. Patience and perseverance through various obstacles to
become the main reason for his success. He is also a man with a vision. This is because,
he is willing to donate his wealth to the poor and religious. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar always
look forward. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar’s vision is to help others by using his own wealth.
Therefore, he must work hard to ensure that the vision is achieved. In islam, his good
deeds will be rewarded in the afterlife. Thus, he contributed a lot for charity purposes.
However, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has set up Yayasan al-Bukhary to help the poor,
especially in the field of education. Until now, Yayasan al-Bukhary has spent more than
RM300 million for religious, cultural and educational. The complex plays an important role
by providing facilities such as mosques, orphanages, and others. Therefore, clearly show
that Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar a figure with the foresight to realizing his vision. He has helped
to increase the welfare and development of Islam in Malaysia.
Second, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar's opinion that failure is an option. This is because
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar had experienced a business failure when livestock undergo
bankruptcy. Nevertheless, he continued to rise by trying other businesses. His failure and
learn a lesson and experience for his future. After that, he was successful in business.
This success adds his enthusiasm and confidence to develop themselves in the business
world. In addition. Based on the situation on the above, it is clear that Tan Sri Syed
Mokhtar also experienced a failure in business. However, the spirit of Tan Sri to strive to
fruition today. Past failures are a catalyst for success in the future.

Next, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar someone who is an observant. This is because Tan
Sri Syed Mokhtar has been watching and appreciating science practiced by his father's
business. This was because he had watched his father dealing with suppliers of cattle and
buffaloes from Thailand. This allows him to learn a little bit of business processes. Tan Sri
Syed Mokhtar also wise in choosing the underlying business sector. This is because, he
wisely observes expanded needs at a specific time. At first, he was involved with
necessities such as rice and sugar. Later, he was involved with shipping, in line with
current needs. Therefore, he is a smart businessman in observing and evaluating the pros
and cons of an action. Observation is very important to get good ideas in business.
Lastly, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar someone who dares to take risks. This is because
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary took a risk when he dabbled in business. He was
courageous to initiate steps in the business such as rice, sugar and others. He said to
take the risk because he did not have a lot of knowledge about the underlying business
sector. With the daring nature to bear the risk, the underlying business. He has
successfully diversified its business without relying on the sale of the business only.

4.0 Conclusion

individuals can adopt to boost their own leadership abilities. Theories that consider
personality, social, physical, or intellectual traits to differentiate leaders from non-leaders.
If we want to be an emulated leader we must not easily admit defeat when something
bad prevents us from doing it. we must keep striving and looking ahead for something
desired. For example, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar once said, do not give up easily and do not
be lazy if you want to be successful and rich. Then we do not need to show our wealth to
people and do not need to feel proud of what we have. He always does good and gives
to those in need. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar once said that because we do good to people,
from there the idea of the business we want to do it.
The conclusion is Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar shows us how his journey ventures into the
field of business and from there we can follow in his footsteps like hard working since
childhood to cultivate high ambitions, not proud of the wealth gained and always obedient
to both his parents. With a leader like this, a businessman can emulate a leader like this
to develop our business.
