Introduction

About this book:

This book contains a comprehensive collection of worksheets, games and activities intended for use
with children in Preschool, Kindergarten (Prep) and Grade 1 to help learn the AN word family.
They can be used with the whole class, in centers and small groups, as early finisher work or as
homework. The worksheets, games and activities vary in tasks and degree of difficulty to allow
children with different learning styles to add to their strengths and develop their weaknesses.

Directions for use:

Following is an outline of the resources included in this unit and suggestions for use.
1. Word family poster
Print, laminate and display on your wall. This page can also be kept in a writing binder.
2. Word family house display and elements
Print the pages and, if you would like to re-use them again, laminate them, and then cut out the
houses and neighbourhood elements. As you introduce a word family or a set of word families to
your students, add the house to your display. Please refer to the examples section on the last
few page of this unit to get an idea of how you could design a street. To promote interaction
with the display, write different words on the cars or flowers and ask children to place them on
the matching word family road.
3. Word family word wall
Select the version you wish to use (colour or black and white), print the pages, laminate them for
durability, and then cut out the cards apart. Display on your wall.
4. Word Family CVC word building mat
To help differentiate instruction, 2 versions have been included for each mat: one with letters
for each picture and one without.
To prepare the word building mats for use, print the version you wish to use (or print both), and
laminate for durability. They can be used in a word work center with Scrabble letter tiles, small
magnets or other letter manipulatives. Alternatively, if you choose to use the letter tiles included
in this unit, prepare them for use by laminating and cutting them apart. preparation is the same
as for the mats and, once laminated, the letters are cut apart. Another option would be to use
the mats in a write and wipe center where children write each word with an erasable marker.
Once the activity is completed, children can complete the recording sheet included.

5. Word family real and nonsense word building mat
To prepare the cards for use, print them out, laminate them for durability and cut along the
dashed lines (cutting the shapes is optional). Print the letter cards at the end of the unit,
laminate them for durability and then cut them apart. Make a few sets of the letter cards so
that they can be shared among students. Alternatively, children can use magnetic letters or
Scrabble letter tiles.
The aim of this activity is for children to practice building CVC and CCVC words and
determine which words are real and which ones are nonsense words. As children build each
word, they can write them on the response sheet included in this unit. Once the activity is
completed, children draw a picture of a real word.
6. Word family house sorting center
This activity is intended for use with houses from my other word family units.
To prepare the activity, print the word family house and picture cards, laminate them for
durability and then cut out the house shapes and the cards. Print the answer card page and
follow the instructions on the page to prepare it for use. Store the house, picture cards and
answer card in a zip-lock bag.
Working with a few sets, the aim of this activity is for children to match three picture cards
to the correct word family house. Children select a vowel set (eg: short a houses - an, ap,
at) and place the corresponding answer cards with the label facing up on the space
provided. They then sort the picture cards to a word family house. Upon completion, they
check their answers on the answer cards for each family.
7. Word family ladder bingo game
Please note: You will need to supply tokens for this game.
To prepare the game, print the Bingo ladder-boards, caller chart and caller cards. Laminate
them for durability and cut apart. Store all the pieces together in a zip-lock bag.
Game Play: This game is best played in a group of 5 children where one child is the Caller
and the other four children are the Bingo Players. The Caller pulls a caller card randomly
out of a container or hat and reads it to the players. The player who has that particular word
on his or her Bingo ladder-board, covers the word with a token. The winner is the child who
covers up all their words.
8. I Have, Who Has? Word Family game
To prepare the cards for use, print them out, laminate them for durability and cut along the
dashed lines.
Game Play: This game is best played with the same number of children as there are cards, or
with half the number of children as cards, in which case children will be receiving two cards

instead of only one. The cards are divided between the children, each child receiving one or
more cards. The child with the first card begins by saying: “I have the first card. Who has...
(word at the bottom of the card).” The child with the same word responds, “I have... (word
on card)” and then asks, “Who has... (word at the bottom of the card)?” Game play
continues until all the cards have been used up.
9. Word family write and wipe cards
To help differentiate, there are 3 card versions:
1. with onsets / without rimes
2. without onsets / with rimes
3. without onsets / without rimes
To prepare the cards for use, print the version/s you wish to use and the cover option you
prefer, laminate them for durability and cut along the dashed lines. Make a hole in the top
left of each card, place the cover on top and secure together with a key-ring or ribbon.
The purpose of this activity is for children to practice writing CVC and CCVC words. For an
extra challenge, mix the cards with sets from other word family sets.
10. Word family flip-flap book

To assemble the flip-flap books, cut out each rectangle, then along the lines of the letter

and picture flips. Make sure that the top rectangle is left intact as it will form the base for
the flip-flap book! Arrange the letter “flips” (pages) one on top of the other and staple
them to the left side of the base. Students then need to arrange the picture “flips” (pages)
one on top of the other and staple them to the right side of the base.
There are 2 ways the picture flips can be arrange:
1. Randomly - children practice reading the words formed as they turn the letter flips and
find the matching picture
2. To match the letters - children read the words formed as they turn the letter flips and the
matching picture.
Please refer to the “Examples” section to get a better idea of what set-up looks like.
11. Word family word flip book
To assemble the flip books, cut out each word family onset, making sure to leave the base
intact. Arrange the “flips” (word family onsets) one on top of the other and staple them to
the base. Students will have lots of fun reading their flip books over and over again to
friends and family!

12. Word family rhyming word flip book

To assemble the flip book, cut out each rectangle, then along the lines of the bottom

rectangle. Make sure that the top rectangle is left intact as it will form the base for the flip
book! Arrange the “flips” (pages) one on top of the other and staple them to the base.
Students will have lots of fun reading their flip books over and over again to friends and
family!
Please refer to the “Examples” section to get a better idea of what set-up looks like.
13. Word family “Who Lives Here?” flip book

To assemble the flip book, cut out the bottom rectangle. Cut the top rectangle and then

along the dotted lines to make flaps. Paste the top rectangle (with the flaps cut) on top of
the bottom rectangle. Students lift a flap, say the name of the picture under it and then
write the name on the top flap in the box provided.
14. My Book of Word Families
This section contains pages to create a word family word work book for each student in the
classroom. However, the contents can also be used as stand-alone worksheets in the
classroom or as homework.
The first page displays a house with 6 pictures that belong to the focus word family and
children are asked to write the word for each one of the writing lines provided. The second
page asks children to write any additional words they know from the focus word family, and
then to illustrate each word. The next worksheet asks children to write a sentence for 3 words
of their choice and the last worksheet has children writing a story using as many words as they
can from the focus word family, and then to illustrate their story.
15. Word family mini book
To assemble the mini book, cut along the dashed lines, and then staple on the left side.
Children can either use the pictures included in this unit, find pictures in magazines or draw
pictures that belong to the focus word family, and then label each picture.
16. Word family picture scrambles
To assemble the word family picture scramble booklets print the pages, cut them in half, and
then staple on the left hand side. Make sure to leave the picture scramble page (at the end
of the booklet) intact as children will cut the pictures apart when completing the activity.
The aim is for children to cut the pictures along the dotted lines, and then to order them
correctly to spell the each of the words from the focus word family. The booklet also
contains a writing activity, requiring children to colour the word, trace the word, then write the
word twice.

Tip: I recommend that children begin by colouring the pictures in the boxes. They may not be
able to make out exactly what the image will be, or which colours to use and how to match
them between the boxes, but it will be much harder to colour in after gluing! Of course, if
using a glue stick, children can colour the images after they have glued them in the correct
order!
17. Word family build-a-word reader
To assemble the word family booklets, print the pages, cut them in half, and then staple on
the left hand side. Cut the word strips at the end of each booklet apart. Supply each child
with a booklet and a word family strip.
The aim is for children to read the simple sentences on each page and identify the missing
word family words. Children locate the word on their strip, cut out the letters tiles and then
paste them in order to build the word.
18. Word family word booklet
Print the booklet using the duplex printing option on your printer or photocopy the pages back-to-
back after printing. Cut each page in half, then place the bottom half on top of the top half. Fold
in half and secure with a staple in the middle.
19. Word family reading strips
This page is intended to help develop reading fluency. Children read the sentences on the page
and, after each time, they colour an animal. Children should read the page 5 times for successful
completion of this reading activity.
20. Word family reading comprehension page
Children read the short passage and then answer the question by colouring the correct circle.
20. Word family reading comprehension booklet
Print/photocopy the black and white booklets using the duplex feature on your device. Cut
each reader in half, horizontally, and place the cover page over the page labelled "2" on
the bottom right corner. Fold the booklet in half and staple in the middle. If printed correctly,
the book will be in the correct order. Follow these directions to print and assemble the
coloured booklets also.
After reading their booklet, children write the missing letters on the 6th page to match the
pictures and then complete the corresponding comprehension page. These readers and
comprehension sheets can be used while working with the entire class, in small groups, or one-
on-one with individual children. They can also be assigned as homework for additional
practice to reinforce words learnt in the classroom.

22. Word family worksheets
A. Build-a-Word: Children cut out the letter tiles from the bottom of the page and build the
words on the page.
B. Make a match: Children trace the words on the page and then cut out the pictures from the
bottom of the page and paste them above the correct word.
C. Make a match 2: Children cut out the words from the bottom of the page and paste them
under the correct word.
D. Make a word: Children use the letters identified to make words and write them on the writing lines
provided. They then read a sentence and draw a picture to demonstrate comprehension.
E. Read, Match, Write: Children read the words in the left column and match them to the pictures
in the middle. They then write the words in the shapes in the right column and match them to the
pictures in the middle.
F. Belongs and Doesn’t belong: Children cut the pictures from the bottom of the page and paste
them in the correct house to show which contain the focus word family ending and those that don’t.
G. Colour It: Children colour the pictures that ending with the focus word family.
H. Colour by word: Children colour the picture using the colour code provided.
I. Missing Words: Children fill in the blanks using the word bank provided.
Happy Teaching :)
