28th MacKenzie Society Annual Gathering
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
ST. CHARLES
The two hundred acres of land acquired in 1904 in the parish of St.
Charles west of Winnipeg provided founding members a broad range of
activities. Polo, horse racing, trap shooting, tennis, lawn bowling and
golf were the pastimes pursued. The golf courses designed first by Tom
Bendelow in 1905 and reconstructed in 1919 by Donald Ross were
routed in part around the polo field that was in use until the late 1920s
when horses disappeared from the property.
In 1928 Dr. Alister MacKenzie, traveled across Canada with a group of
British Sr. Golfers who stopped in Winnipeg and played at St. Charles.
The timing was fortuitous as the club had just purchased addition
acreage towards Portage Avenue. As his reputation had preceded him,
Dr. MacKenzie was asked if he would be interested in routing nine
holes on that property. He agreed and the “north” course opened for
play in 1931. It remains largely intact in routing and design as does
nine holes by Donald Ross. In 1954, Norman Woods, a long time
associate of Stanley Thompson but working on his own after
Thompson’s death, re routed the “polo” nine. (Further modifications to
the Woods nine came with a land sale in 1971 and subsequent retention
pond development in 1988.) The three nine hole courses are now named
after their architects of record, Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross and
Norman Woods.
Trees enhance the property at St. Charles and Alister MacKenzie made
note of that in his book The Spirit of St. Andrews where in he states
“the trees have been cut down in a most artistic manner, leaving
clumps scattered irregularly over the fairways. Without these trees the
course would have been exceedingly dull and uninteresting, but as it, it
is one of the best courses in Canada. The most important of the
principles in designing and constructing a golf course is to make the
fullest use of trees and all other natural hazards and features.” A
profound statement from one of the most revered golf course architects
of the golden era.
