From Father Godfrey

- A heartfelt welcome to all our guests, especial-
ly those who are with us for Grandpar-

ents’/Grandpals’ Day! The parish wel-
comes you with open arms. Please know that

you’re always welcome here. And thank you for
honoring us with your presence today! My own

grandparents were four very different people,
each of whom showed me the importance of love of family and love

of God. Please never underestimate your role in the lives of young
people! Remember what an impact your example has on them.

And please, entrust them each day to the tender heart of Mary and
the merciful care of our Savior!

- Once again, many of you have been very kind to me in the past
few weeks, especially about my few days off over last weekend. I’m
grateful for your understanding that priestly ministry (and all minis-
try, for that matter) takes physical, mental, and emotional energy.
Having a few days away with good friends helps me get ready for
the ministry that God puts in front of me in the days ahead.
- September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Let’s keep in prayer all who suffer from childhood cancer — the
children, their parents, and all too often, their survivors. May God
hold His beloved ones close in His healing embrace!
- September is also designated the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration’s Recovery Month, to increase
awareness and understanding of mental and substance use issues
and celebrate the people who recover. For all parishioners and
guests who are in recovery, may God continue to bless you with
courage and strength. And for those in need of recovery, the truth
will set you free! Let’s pray for all who suffer. Lord, have mercy!
- As we prepare for POPE FRANCIS’ APOSTOLIC VISIT TO
THE UNITED STATES September 22-27, 2015, I invite you to
look forward to his words in the various places where he will speak.
“Live feed” of many of the events will occur on EWTN (cable or
www.EWTN.com), Boston’s CatholicTV (www.CatholicTV.com),
or via the US Bishops’ website (www.USCCB.org). The theme of
his visit is Love is our Mission. Let’s pray for his safety!
- On Tuesday of this past week, Pope Francis issued two letters
motu proprio (on his own impulse) regarding the process for de-
claring marriage nullity (annulments): Mitis iudex Dominus Iesus
and Mitis et Misericors Iesus. Clearly, Father Kenneth Walker, the Ju-
dicial Vicar of the Diocese of Evansville, will instruct the priests,
deacons and advocates on the application of these documents. In
my experience, many Catholics know little about this process of
mercy or have been told “facts” that are just not true. As we pre-
pare to inaugurate the Jubilee Year of Mercy in December, it is my
prayerful hope that all who are in need of this work of mercy will ap-
proach the Church for its assistance. One central purpose of an
annulment is healing. If you have questions, let me know.
- I’m away this week for the Priest Convocation—a retreat held at
Clifty Falls, led by Archbishop Joseph Tobin.
