Brushes:
I use fine quality brushes from:
The Robert Simmons Company by Daler-Rowney.
Your brush size will depend upon the size of the canvas you are working on.
I created these on 3 very large canvases, however, they can be painted on
any size you desire. My dimensions were 12x24 and (2) 9x12
Therefore my brushes are as follows:
Sienna Series SN 55: 1” Wash
Sienna Series SN 60 Flats: #20, #16, #14, #12, #4
#1 liner
Other Supplies:
2
Masterson Sta Wet Palette
Sta wet paper
Fine grade sand paper
Tracing paper
Saral paper to transfer design
Brush Basin
100% Cotton Rags or Viva Job Squad paper towels
1” Sponge brush
Water based Varnish
PREPARTION:
1. Lightly sand canvas, wipe.
2. Apply your background color around the design as shown in the
finished photograph. Use a VERY large brush to do this.
3. Double load the brush with Dark green on one side and Blending Gel
on the other. Blend on pallet to soften the color then pat the color
next to the design. You can see this on the teaching video.
PAINTING THE DESIGN:
(Step by step with the color worksheet)
1. Number the petals on the poppy that you are painting. The first petal
will be the farthest back and the last petal will be the one that is the
closest to you.
2. Undercoat the petals with two coats of Red Light. Let the paint dry
between coats.
3. Double load your brush with a mixture of Burnt Carmine and True
Burgundy 1:1 on one side of the brush and Blending Gel OR water on
the other side. Float on the shadows as shown in the illisturations on
the worksheet. Let the shadows dry. These are called “anchors”
4. Begin with petal #1
a. Apply a little blending gel to petal #1 then apply the colors. In
the illustration I used Red Light, Pure Orange, and the dark
mixture of True Burgundy and Burnt Carmine.
b. Wipe your brush. You may want to pick up a larger brush,
dirty it with paint and wipe it off, then start pat blending as
shown on the worksheet moving the color from the center out
towards the edges and from the edges back towards the center.
Study this technique on the video. You may add more light or
dark as desired.

c. BE SURE you blend following the natural flow of the petals
which I have illustrated on one of the poppies using arrows on
the worksheet. Vary the colors on the petals as you desire. To
create the yellow/green I have mixed Hauser Green Light and
Yellow Light together 1:1. (Sock it to Me Baby Green)
THE CENTER
Dab the center carefully on with Burnt Umber. Highlight with Ultra Marine
Blue and Magenta to which you have added a touch of White.
THE LEAVES
1. Undercoat the leaves with two or more coats of Hauser Green Light.
Let the paint dry between coats.
2. Anchor the shadows with Burnt Umber in a scribbling motion as
shown on the worksheet and video. Let dry.
3. Apply a little Blending Gel and the colors of your choice, I used Burnt
Umber, Sap Green, Hauser Green Light, and a little Ice Blue. Wipe
the brush and pat and blend. CAREFUL don’t over blend and
“muddy” the leaves. Studying the finished photograph will help you
see how I have varied the colors in the leaves to some degree. Yellow
may also be used in the leaves if desired as well as white.
THE STEMS
The stems are painted Hauser Green Light shaded with Burnt Umber and
highlighted with White. Let the piece dry thoroughly then varnish with two
or more coats of the water based varnish of your choice.
