GODLINESS
This Issue Godliness. Just the word itself seems to evoke an emotional re-
Includes sponse. The response may be positive – “I’m doing ok, working
on it” (although I don’t think many of us feel this way). It could be
Calendar 2 confusion – “what does it mean to be godly?” Or, it may be dis-
couragement – “I just can’t do this, I don’t even want to try to be
Birthdays & godly anymore.” It could be guilt - “I’m so far from this, I’m a fail-
Anniversaries ure.” Or it could be outright rejection - “no way, not interested.”
What comes to mind when you hear the word godliness?
Congratulations 3
I was struck with that word this morning in my quiet time, and I
Men’s Breakfast was struck with it two days ago as well. I Timothy 6:6 (NASB) says, “But godliness actu-
Prayer ally is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.” I found myself ask-
Choir ing, “Just what is godliness?” While we may give the appearance of godliness in what
Refit we say and do, it has to be more than mere external behavior. People can fake that. All
Op. Christmas Child I could come up with is that godliness is to desire what God desires so much that it gov-

Rabbit Trails 4 Paul is warning his readers to beware of those who put forth “different doctrine” and
Sympathy who “suppose that godliness is a means of gain” (v. 5). Perhaps the gain sought by
Ladies Retreat these men is monetary, and the reference is to those who offered ministry for money.
Primetimers The subject of money is laced through verses 6-19. I wonder if it doesn’t apply to other
self-serving “gains” as well. Regardless, it is not a good gain that is being sought by
Harvest Weekend 5 those under “different doctrine.” At the same time, in verse 6, he points out that there
is gain for living a life of true godliness. But, this gain, has the companion of content-
Pumpkin Party 6 ment, not the desire for more money, or recognition, or whatever self-serving motive
might be present.
Divorce Care
Then, what is godliness? I had to look it up. Here’s the definition from Vine’s Expository
Prayer Opportunity Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words, “from eu, "well," and sebomai,
"to be devout," denotes that piety which, characterized by a Godward attitude, does that
Life Groups 7 which is well-pleasing to Him.”
Youth Ministry
I’m struck with the thought that our, that my, idea of what is “well-pleasing to Him,” may
not be what is, in fact, well-pleasing to Him. I like to be secure and comfortable and en-
joy life. He wants me to be on mission with Him. That generally means risk and sacri-
fice. I’m being challenged with the impression that ministry has to move outside the
safe circle of my home, friends, and church. I’d like to think that I’m a disciple-maker; I
work with new believers (or old) and I help them follow Jesus. Really? Can I really be
teaching someone how to follow Jesus without showing them, by my example, how to
reach the lost? But if I just focus on building a strong relationship with the Lord, can’t I
let Him direct them? The more I focus on a relationship with Him, the more I’m directed
to the lost in the world.
The conclusion, a life lived without intentional effort to take the gospel to those who
have yet to believe, is, well, not a godly life. Ouch. It isn’t easy or comfortable to try to
reach out, especially for us introverts. Perhaps that’s why we see in chapter 4,
“discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; 8 for bodily discipline is only of little
profit, but godliness is profitable for all things” (1 Timothy 4:7-8). True godliness is prof-
itable for the kingdom. It is children enjoying a relationship with the King, while, with the
help of the King, gathering others into the kingdom and showing them how to do the
same. May we all enjoy the grace given us to be truly godly.
Pursuing the Grace that Produces Godliness,
Pastor Dan

We would like to thank the members of MBC for your kindness, prayers, and love during
the passing of my dad Sherman Johnson. So many of you sent cards, came to the visita-
tion, have said kind words, and our amazing Life Group sent a beautiful plant. We just
want to thank you for lifting us up in prayer. We have felt God answering your prayers
as we have felt his strength and peace through dad's last few
days and during these days since he entered God's Kingdom
for eternity! Praise God for this hope of salvation for all of us!
Sincerely,
Ralph and Margie Johnson

LIFE GROUPS
Life Groups are small groups that meet weekly in a home,
typically for a 6-12 week period, to help one another under-
stand and apply God’s Word to their daily lives. We believe
that being in a group like this can be extremely helpful in our
spiritual growth and for facing life’s challenges. Each group meeting includes time for fellowship, pray-
er, and Bible study. Groups are encouraged to do other activities together as well. The fall semester
began the week of September 27th.
Life Groups are beginning! You can join one at any time, it doesn’t matter if you miss the 1st or 2nd
week or more. Each week the lesson will revolve around the topic of Sunday’s sermon. The focus is al-
ways gaining a better understanding of how to apply God’s Word to daily life. Check the sign-ups in the
foyer or contact Ministry Leader Mike Westcomb for more information, 608-576-4046.
