Around Town

At left, the Pillow-Thompson House recently hosted a group of twenty-three
Marvell Academy seniors and two staff members. They took part in a busi-
ness etiquette luncheon. Students learned or refreshed their knowledge of
manners and etiquette during business luncheons. These skills may help
them in the future if they are in similar meal situations. Topics discussed
ranged from placing the napkin in your lap to how to navigate the proper
way to handle “spitting out a tough piece of meat”, according to a couple of
the students. The students also learned about all of the degree programs
and advantages of attending their local community college, PCCUA.

Robby Sartin Award Winners

Marvell Academy seniors Samuel Hall and Kinley Swindle were both recipients
of the Robby Sartin Award. This award is normally presented at the District
Basketball Tournament. This year inclement weather canceled the tourna-
ment which was being held at North Sunflower Academy in early February.
Senior athletes are nominated by their school based on their academics, ath-
letics, citizenship, and community service. Both Hall and Swindle are honor
students, student council officers, and scored their 1,000th senior high career
point during this season. Hall was selected to the All-Star Football Team and
was named to the All-MAIS Football team for the third year. He received
district recognition for Basketball and Baseball. Swindle was named the
District MVP for softball and basketball, was selected to both All-Star teams,
and was also named to both All-MAIS teams. They both have been involved
with community service projects individually and through Marvell Academy.
Robert Glen “Robby” Sartin, Jr., of Tunica, was a teacher and coach in the
MAIS District 1 Tunica Academy school. He had State A Champions in boys’
basketball in 1984-85, football in 1991, and boys track in 1990. He had North
A Division Champions in Jr. High football in 1984-93, North A Division Cham-
pions in Jr. High boys’ basketball in 1987-93, and he was named MPSA North
All-Star Baseball Coach in 1984-88 and 1990-93. After a lengthy battle with
cancer, Sartin passed away in 1994 at the age of 39. The Robby Sartin award
was started in his honor and memory. Sartin believed that athletes should
be well-rounded with a balance of academics and service to their community.
He encouraged his students and athletes to give their best effort in all areas.
The Robby Sartin award criteria exemplifies this philosophy.
