Shirley Tidwell, aka Mother, was born to the union of Carlton Thibodeaux and Alice Guidry Thibodeaux in Opelousas, Louisiana on April 19, 1929. She was the sixth of eleven children. She was raised in the Catholic Church. When Mother was six years old, in April, 1936,she said, “Father God, let me be just like Jesus.” She didn’t know quite what that meant when she prayed to God but she knew she wanted Jesus in her life and she wanted to show love and compassion and be a good example to others. In May of 1936, she received her first communion. In March of 1954, Mother Tidwell was baptized by water immersion at Sweet Home Baptist Church in DeRitter, Louisiana. In 1956, Mother migrated to Marin County in Northern California and worked there for two years, after which she returned to DeRitter, Louisiana. Returning to Los Angeles, California in 1960, she met and married Arthur Logan and became the loving mother of Joyce Logan Dockery. They were married 15 years. In 1983, she met and married Andrew Tidwell and was married for 15 ½ years. They resided in Long Beach, California until his passing in 1996. Mother Tidwell returned to the area of Duarte, California and has remained there since 1999. Mother Tidwell was a member of Community Baptist Church from 1961 until she united with Second Baptist Church, Monrovia, California in 2010 and received the Right Hand of Fellowship on July 24, 2011. On July 22, 2012, Mother Tidwell was appointed by Bishop William LaRue Dillard to the Honored and Distinguished Position of the Council of Mothers. Her family members thought she was too strict and truthful, but her mother whipped her for lying and since then she talked to God and asked Him to help her not lie to anybody, “cuz Mama could put a hurtin’ on you.” Mother’s friends got along with her like they were sisters. They appreciated each other because they could be honest and truthful with each other. Mother Tidwell is preceded in death by her husband, daughter, mother, father, siblings, as well as several brothers and sisters who passed away in infancy. She is survived by her granddaughter-Theresa Dockery, grandson-Therman Lamont Dockery and her four great grandchildren; her brother, Carlton’s only son-Darrell Thibodeaux (Delia) of Silverdale, WA; nephews and nieces-Amy Bryant, Chris Bryant, James Bryant (Joyce), Melonee Gail Bryant, Ollie Charles Bryant (Mary), Marilyn Charles, Brian Childs (Wendy), Lisa Childs, Evelyn Davis (Terrence), Ted Hurse, Pam Norwood (Michael), Jackie Piper, Rubin Piper Jr., Patricia Rawls (Tommy), and Alice Taylor. Mother Tidwell will be sorely missed by a host of nieces, nephews, family friends and her church. Obsequies
