Club President’s Welcome
Happy New Season!
How exciting that at long last we can look forward to actual, real life RUGBY.
I haven’t got over the curtailment of the season before last (can it really be that long ago?) when whatever algorithm the RFU used, decided that we would finish the season in 5th place. No way, I thought at the time and I still feel aggrieved about it.
Anyway good luck to Harrogate and Blaydon, we’ll be pleased to welcome them back into the Northern Premier League if the case arises.
To this coming season, of course, we do welcome back Preston Grasshoppers and Burnage who in various seasons have played in our league and we give our usual Billingham welcome to Northwich, Otley and York.
JOHN KER
CLUB PRESIDENT
Although we have played York in previous years, I don’t remember it being at our current level. Correct me if I’m wrong but I won’t be buying you a pint.
Financially the club, as most others in rugby and many other sports, have been through a couple of lean years but thanks to the diligent workings of our fiscal wizards and the other committees we have survived to face another season. The massive crowd for our recent friendly, warm-up game against Tynedale is evidence of Billingham Rugby Club’s thirst for games to watch. I don’t use that word lightly as we need that thirst to be taken into the bar, before, during (well, halftime) and especially after all matches as we need to hear the tills ringing as we recoup our losses. Do tills actually still ring these days or is that only in a certain shop on TV? Anyway, you know what I mean.
Welcome back to rugby one and all and let’s see if Billingham can go unbeaten before Christmas. We’ve done it before so let’s give it our best for repeat performances although I do appreciate that the other clubs will be doing their level best to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Message from the Chairman
And there it is, gone... another season over,
well nearly.
I have been playing rugby for over 45 years and I can’t recall a season which started with so much anticipation, so much excitement and yet so much not knowing.
After a curtailed a season and a season that never was season, would the season start on time? Would the season end? Would rugby be the same as it was before? And the answer is.... well it depends! Clearly the season started on time and with two games to go including today’s match, it will finish on time, however it was definitely not a season like any other.
A lot has happened on and off the field in this first post-Covid year. Our injury list was as long as any I can recall at the club and clearly losing a season and a bit has had it’s toll on the players. You can train as much as you want, but there is no substitute for match fitness and the lead in protocols actually hindered the ramp up back into contact when in hindsight we probably needed longer.
MARK ARMSTRONG
CLUB CHAIRMAN
Another material impact of Covid is loss of players. We were fortunate to attract a group of players at the beginning of the season and we started with the largest senior squad probably ever. However, this was not the same across the leagues and outside of the Northern Premier, matches were called off at a far too frequent rate, especially in the Candy league. This has led to a level of disenfranchisement, that ultimately lead to players leaving looking for more regular rugby, players retiring or after nearly two seasons with little rugby, players being lost from the game.
I will get chastised for the next comment, but I stand by the point that the selfish, lower league clubs who can barely scratch two teams together, have delivered a major disservice to our sport.
Not allowing clubs with 2, 3 or more teams to enter the lower leagues next season will weaken the stronger clubs in the county, will weaken our County even further and above all, will weaken rugby in England. We had an opportunity to do the opposite. I can’t help but feel aggrieved, I hope the RFU who proposed the initiative, override the County’s and allow this to happen. How grow can we grow rugby if we cant provide a lower XV competitive league structure?

We started this year strong, and yes there are some strong teams in our league, but with a full squad, with a competitive 2nd team set of fixtures, we may have been looking at promotion. Some might say it would be too big a step up, maybe... but you don’t know until you try.
So next season the leagues
gets re-structured, the good
news is we play against more
local teams, like Derby and
Paviors in Nottingham (that was sarcasm). However, what is does
mean is that it is more than likely we wont be playing Rossendale again for
a while unless both of us manage to
get promoted.
So, after a good few years of travelling back and forth across the Pennines, today could be a farewell match for a while. I am sure Rossendale will want to say goodbye on a high, but today is our last home match of a bizarre season and I trust in the 18 men that represent us today to bring home the W and secure 4th place and a great finish and show the crowd what is meant by OSIOS.
The Lions are also at home and after a strange season, today is the day to put it right. If we beat Alnwick, I suspect we may upset their perfect year and finish what might be the last Candy league season strong. We almost had them in September and today would be a good time to say “OSIOS” to Alnwick.
Off the field, we have had more positive news and things are moving at a good pace. I have thanked our volunteers
and our members for standing by us during Covid already, but I am going to do it again.
We have been able to move forward with our plans (some of them at least) in part because of the support of you, our loyal and committed membership. In part because of some amazing fund raising
done by a couple of incredibly committed people and in part because over the last 10 years many, many people have helped make this club what it is today, have helped ensure we have a strong future and have helped us raise sufficient funds to deliver on our dreams.
We are closing on on our 98th year and the dream was always to host a centenary dinner with over 200 people, in our own club. We aren’t there yet, but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. What we have done, is invest in new toilets and in a couple of weeks, we will have an outside bar, just in time for the summer and the sunshine. We have plans to develop the front of the club too before we move on to the major project of extending the club.
So I am sure I have missed a lot of people out. We have unfortunately had to say goodbye to some friends this year, we have been able to welcome some new ones, Unitel our senior sponsor being one.
We look forward to finishing the year strong and as we look forward to next season I look forward to building on our new relationships, deepening some existing ones and remember, next year, we are 99 years old, effectively our
100th year.
Let the fun begin!
OSIOS, OSIOS, OSIOS!

Senior Coach Update
The last home game and penultimate
fixture of a very challenging but
successful season.
No doubt you will see a full season review on social media at some point after the final game and potentially the club dinner with all the facts, figures, award winners and general info. I just wanted to say it’s been a great season after a tough couple of years, all clubs have had players leaving, picking up additional jobs or retiring and we are no different. What we have done is stuck together and put a cracking effort in. Supported by record numbers in the ‘stands’ massive thanks for that.
I was missing last week unfortunately for me as I was in Vegas on a stag do. Whilst away neglecting my duties, the lads put in a solid shift and played some good running rugby at a tough ground. Some players impressed and keep their shirts whilst we make some changes with some enforced due to work and injury.
PETER EVANS
SENIOR COACH
Rossendale have had a tough year but still racked up an impressive number of wins. Whilst seen a very strong home team they have often put a spanner in the works and beaten us at home. A bit of bogey team to be honest. Heads screwed on and time to run out and play some free flowing rugby.
Great to have the Lions at home with us. Again another challenging season for different reasons out of our control.
We are still deeply hit with injuries and unavailability but a games a game!
3TM travel to Tynedale to contest for some silverware. Good to see the lads going further a field to try and bring home some silverware.
Good luck to all 3 teams in action. Lets finish strong!

Colts
Grow your own strategy.
Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years.
Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams.
This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts
team who focus on the integration of
our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through
a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.
One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

The Rugby Codes
RFU Code of Rugby
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of
our sport.
Teamwork
Respect
Enjoyment
Discipline
Sportsmanship
Play to win - but not at all cost. Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations
of the game.
Respect opponents, referees and
all participants.
Reject cheating, racism, violence
and drugs.
Value volunteers and paid officials alike. Enjoy the game.
Club Code of Rugby
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf
of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you
all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her
life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
