CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOMEI’VE NEVER BEEN AS EXCITED AT THE START OF A NEW RUGBY SEASON. NEW AGP AND SUPER FLOODLIGHTS; NEW NAME FOR OUR LEAGUE; NEW COACHING TEAM IN PLACE; MORE ADULT PLAYERS THAN EVER AT PRE-SEASON TRAINING PLUS THE INSIDE OF THE CLUB SPRUCED UP. WHAT’S NOT TO EXCITE?We welcome into our league this season, Kirkby Lonsdale, Pocklington and Preston Grasshoppers for the frst time in our recent history and welcome back Harrogate and Birkenhead Park. Whichever club is hosted this afternoon, I wholeheartedly welcome all your players, offcials and supporters who have travelled all the way to Billingham; we shall make sure that you are treated well, both on and off the feld, whatever the ultimate result.Billingham RUFC currently turn out three adult teams plus colts in the Senior Section, the Ladies and Girls Section continues to go from strength to strength while the Junior Section has teams from U7 through to U16. Meanwhile the Vets will be looking for more and more games now that the old boys have got “the bug” to play once again. Thanks are in order to a lot of people without whom this club could not function. We do aim to be the leading (amateur) family rugby club in the North of England, so thanks to all the parents who bring their children to join the Minis, stay on to become coaches, managers and volunteers. We are lucky to have lots of volunteers but none of this could happen without the leadership of our hard working Executive Committee. Again a special word of thanks goes to Club Manager, Nick Dalgleish, for his hard work over the summer months with our sponsors, many of whom have signed up again for this season. Lastly, a big thanks to all those sponsors, without whom the club wouldn’t be quite the same.Remember, our motto is… “Our Spirit is our Strength”.JOHN KERCLUB PRESIDENT

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMANI WOULD LIKE TO START BY PRAISING THE ‘TEAM’ FOR THEIR RECENT RESULTS. We come into today’s match off the back of three consecutive wins, two of them away from home against Sandal and Hull. Sandal where I don’t believe we have been and won and Hull whom we have never beaten home or away before. The players, the coaches and the ‘team’ in total deserve this mention, because after only one win in our frst four matches, there were rumblings from the side-lines. However, the team believed in themselves pre-season, they believed in themselves when the results were going against us and they still believe today. Trust and belief in yourself and each other is the foundation of a successful team. Never before has there been a better show of our spirit and how that manifests itself into being our strength.Today brings another challenge and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Birkenhead Park and their supporters to Greenwood Road. I am sure Birkenhead Park won’t be settling for their current position in the league and will come here today to prove that point and as such we expect a competitive game.I am also delighted to announce that we have selected Prostate Cancer UK as our offcial charity for both this and next season and that, our new away strip will help promote awareness of the condition and the charity, a condition that effects 1 in 8 men over 50. I look forward to updating you on our work with Prostate Cancer UK in the coming months #menunited. Replicas of the new shirts are available online or from Duane and the club will be donating 10% of the income to the charity.I would like to thank todays match day sponsor, an ex-player (even a current player I heard from last week), recent try scorer and parent of the next generation of Billingham player, John Fraser. This is not the frst time John has sponsored the club and I know he is also actively involved in his son’s team too. Thank you for your ongoing support. The Lions are back in action today, after two weeks without a match, away at Percy Park. Percy Park Colts will be at Greenwood Road today playing our Colts and 3TM are away playing Northallerton 2s. Good luck to all teams today and tomorrow.I was sceptical about opening with the praise at the top of this message as there is always the risk of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’. But if I didn’t then what would that say about me and my belief in our team. I have 100% faith in our coaching team, the strength and the spirit of the group of players and the overall direction this club is taking. Our motto has always been ‘Our Spirit is our Strength’ and never so more than now. Following the public vote, our members have re-enforced that vote so that even in social media we can continue to reinforce our motto. We are on a journey at all levels, at all grades but today is about the team you have come to watch. They have shown their spirit, today they will not let us down and will show it again, all we need now is you to show yours too.Our Spirit Is Our Strength #OSIOSMARK ARMSTRONGCLUB CHAIRMAN

SENIOR COACH UPDATEI AM WRITING THIS NOW ON THE BACK OF 3 IMPRESSIVE VICTORIES, WHICH NOW MAKES OUR START OF THE SEASON LOOK A BIT MORE REASONABLE. It also highlights those 2 losses which could have been avoided… but it’s a long season and I actually feel like those games have taught this team a great deal.Last week was a proud moment winning in the manner we did at Hull (below), few expected it, but the squad had the belief and that’s what matters. Extremely physical and hard fought great to be involved in.That physicality will have prepared us well for today, as I expect Birkenhead fresh off a big win themselves to be fring and bringing that physical edge to the game. We will need to be switched and prepared for 80 minutes of hard graft. It has been a couple of years since we have met so I imagine teams will have changed. As with any team in this league no points come easy. The Lions (left)recent upturn in form, in line with the frst team squad was broken by a 2 week break, now fresh and ready to go, at Percy Park today hoping to keep the momentum going. The mighty 3TM and impressive Colts will both be looking to continuing their unbeaten runs. Huge shout out to the Hippos (above + pg 19) whose game against Stockton Occassionals last Friday was a highly entertaining win for our boys. All our recent victories haven’t just happened, we have worked extremely hard, great numbers down training and competition for places is high. Its feels like as a whole our senior section is really coming along nicely, long may it continue.Good luck to all.#OSIOSPETER EVANSSENIOR COACH

BRUFC U16s VS DARLINGTON MOWDEN PARKBILLINGHAM WELCOMED LOCAL RIVALS DMP TO GREENWOOD ROAD IN HOPE OF AVENGING THEIR FIRST ROUND CUP DEFEAT.It was DMP however that came out of the blocks and looked ready to put Billingham to the sword and gained an early lead following a frst minute mistake.Billingham, stirred on by stand in captain Phil Greenbank, ramped up the pace of the game on our new AGP pitch and at times throughout the frst half looked unplayable.Billingham managed to keep a stronghold of the game despite DMP pushing Billingham towards the end of the game.A fnal last gasp effort from Max Rafferty ensured a comfortable victory in what was a much improved performance.Billingham have made a very good start to the season against challenging opposition and keep making strides in their improvement.Final score: Billingham 39 - DMP 23#OSIOSMIKE BROWNU16S TEAM MANAGER

BILLINGHAM HIPPOS 24 STOCKTON OCCASIONALS 5THE PHYSICALITY WAS AT A LEVEL NOT USUALLY SEEN ON A VETS PITCH. Big hits were fying in all over the feld and Mark Coull, who had only qualifed as a Veteran the previous day, showed his youthfulness by putting in hit after hit on the big Stockton forwards, supported well by his older back row colleagues. It was the Hippos who managed to bother the scoreboard frst, with Chris Hyndman breaking through a tackle and taking out their full back with a simple pass to Andy Evans who went under the sticks unopposed. Richie Morrison added the conversion. 7-0Hyndman was loving being back in the middle and was starting to enjoy himself, seeing plenty of the ball in the early stages. He put in a lovely chip over the Stockton defensive line deep in his own 22, sprinted through and caught his own kick before setting Craig ‘Tombstone’ Tennant away and it looked like the trademark length of the feld try was on, only to be pulled back by the referee who had harshly judged that the pass had been forward much to the dismay of the large crowd. It was Hyndman again, this time with a huge hit in defence, who got the rowdy section of the home support on the balcony going again and the noise they were creating seemed to galvanise the players, especially Coull who was now rampaging ball in hand and causing havoc amongst the opposition. One such drive led to a Billingham penalty near the half way line which was kicked deep into the Stockton 22 to set up a lineout which was secured and after some forward pressure, scrum half Paul Burgum darted over for Billingham’s second try of the evening. Conversion missed. 12-0Stockton were starting to see more and more of the ball and their forwards controlled it well, making life diffcult for the Hippos and eventually that pressure told with them driving a maul over the line for an unconverted score. Half time - Hippos 12 Occasionals 5The Hippos started strongly and put the Stockton line under pressure but their defence held frm until the impressive Billingham centre partnership once again broke the deadlock. Hyndman this time putting in a lovely grubber kick for Evans to scamper through and out ‘run’ the defenders to touch down. Pete Stentiford taking over the kicking duties duly added the extras. 19-5A passage of sloppy play by the Hippos allowed Stockton a lot of possession in our half and the Hippos relied on some good defence to keep the opposition at bay. More good work in the Billingham back line though, again led by Hyndman set up the fnal score of the evening which saw Stentiford go over for the Hippos 4th try which went unconverted. 24-5The last 10 minutes saw the Hippos make a raft of changes allowing the remainder of the bench to take to the feld and give some tiring legs a much needed break.#OSIOSCHRIS KERHIPPOS TEAM MANAGER 07747 865454PHOTOS COURTESY OF TONY BURGUM PHOTOGRAPHY
