CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I’VE NEVER BEEN AS EXCITED AT THE START OF A NEW RUGBY SEASON. NEW AGP AND SUPER FLOODLIGHTS; NEW NAME FOR OUR LEAGUE; NEW COACHING TEAM IN PLACE; MORE ADULT PLAYERS THAN EVER AT PRE-SEASON TRAINING PLUS THE INSIDE OF THE CLUB SPRUCED UP.
WHAT’S NOT TO EXCITE?
We welcome into our league this season, Kirkby Lonsdale, Pocklington and Preston Grasshoppers for the rst time in our recent history and welcome back Harrogate and Birkenhead
Park. Whichever club is hosted this afternoon, I wholeheartedly welcome all your players, of cials and supporters who have travelled all the way to Billingham; we shall make sure that you are treated well, both on and off the eld, whatever the ultimate result.
Billingham RUFC currently turn out three adult teams plus colts in the Senior Section, the Ladies and Girls Section continues to go from strength to strength while the Junior Section has teams from U7 through to U16. Meanwhile the Vets
will be looking for more and more games now that the old boys have
got “the bug” to play once again.
Thanks are in order to a lot of people without whom this club could not function. We do aim to be the leading (amateur) family rugby club in the North
of England, so thanks to all the parents who bring their children to join the Minis, stay on to become coaches, managers and volunteers.
We are lucky to have lots of volunteers but none of this could happen without the leadership
of our hard working Executive Committee.
Again a special word of thanks goes to Club Manager, Nick Dalgleish, for his hard work over the summer months with our sponsors, many
of whom have signed up again for this season. Lastly, a big thanks to all those sponsors, without whom the club wouldn’t be quite the same.
Remember, our motto is... “Our Spirit is our Strength”.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
JUST OVER 2 WEEKS AGO I WROTE A MESSAGE FOR THE GAME AGAINST SANDAL AND IT STARTED WITH “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
Well as we now know, that game did not go ahead and so it maybe February but this is the rst home game of 2018. So I would like to start by wishing all of our members, supporters as well as their family and friends a healthy and prosperous New Year. I would also like to extend our very best wishes to Hull RUFC and their players and supporters.
The rst time Hull came to Greenwood Road, their coach commented on the quality and the size of our club. I am delighted that today we boast some of the best facilities in the North of England, well
at least for an independent, member owned, amateur rugby club who have no need or intention to pay players, now or ever.
At the same time this small club has developed into a club with the ability to beat other clubs that claim to be big clubs with alleged better facilities. The saying goes that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ which could mean that it is subjective or it could just mean that there is a need for a visit to Specsavers. Either way, we don’t care because we have something called ‘OSIOS’.
For those that are part of the fabric of this club you know what it is and to our visitors, today we would be delighted to show you. We like to think of ourselves as a welcoming
and friendly club - as I am sure all clubs do - but we like to show that through our hospitality which we will extend to our visitors today. As for the match itself, this is where we save for OSIOS.
I would like to thank George Sayers of Stranton Energy once again for supporting our club. George is a long time member, ex-player and now coach and we thank him for his ongoing support.
I made a call this week to our supporters to come and give some additional support to our 1st XV who are having a great rst season under a new coaching regime. We are, as previously highlighted a small club and we come from a small town, but we are a proud club and I hope our spectators do the town and the area proud today. As to the players, don’t let me or them down. Today is time for a double and today is time for OSIOS!!!

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
WE FINALLY WELCOME OUR FIRST HOME GAME OF 2018 AND SINCE DEC 16TH.
We do so on the back of 3 impressive away wins, all well-deserved but the manner of such was the most impressive aspect. Calm, mature and organised. Maybe something lacking in years gone by. That seems to be the difference this year, another year older another year together for a committed group of lads.
There’s been a lot of talk from within about what we can achieve,
it would be dangerous and stupid to look past this
weekend’s opponents Hull. Dangerous with the ball and a big set of boys who can front up. No doubt it will be a challenge.
We made multiple changes last week and may make some this week such is the strength in depth now.
All I ask from our boys is 100% and that we back ourselves. Let’s see what we can achieve.
The Lions got back to winning ways last week with a much improved performance beating Percy Park. Hopefully it gives them a con dence boost and a kick start to a stop-start season.
The 3TM remain unbeaten, looking good in the process, enjoying their rugby and social side of things! Long may it continue.
If we look at the reverse xture, and our rst ever win at Hull, in the middle of a storm with wind blowing a gale we dogged it out to take home the win. One of our many rsts this year along with wins at Sandal and Wirral.
That was weeks ago this is now. Things change, teams get stronger and form counts for a lot.
Both teams bring
in good records in what promises to
be a cracking game. It’s games like this that gets you excited as a rugby player. Everything to play for.
3 out of 3 last week – Same again?

COUNTY CALL UPS!
WE HAD ALFIE LAWSON SELECTED FOR NORTH 18s TRIALS.
We also had Tom Briggs, Ben Walton, Tom Crilly and Ryan Allan involved in the U20s most recent match with Adam Sunley and Liam King selected but unable to play.
Five of our U16s (pictured) Dylan Penny, Lewis Simon, Phil Greenbank, Reece Kundu
and Max Rafferty selected for the upcoming North County xtures.
Big congratulations to everyone involved, as we continue to provide a large group to representative honours.
DYLAN PENNY LEWIS SIMON PHIL GREENBANK REECE KUNDU MAX RAFFERTY
U16s TIE WITH A MUCH IMPROVED WEST SIDE
BILLINGHAM TRAVELLED TO A WEST SIDE THE OTHER WEEK KNOWING THEY WOULD BE UP FOR REVENGE FOLLOWING AN EARLIER SEASON THUMPING.
West started the stronger taking an
early lead
(7-0) before Billingham upped the tempo allowing Max To cross in the corner 7-5.
West kept hammering the door but stern Billingham defence saw West go into half time up by 2.
The second half followed suit with some strong West play but for Billingham to show some good defence. Interchanging scores continued with Callum barrelling over under the post with Phil converting.
Billingham did take the lead with the forwards sticking it up the jumper before a swift of oad from Dylan saw Louis go over in the corner. West quickly reacted and following a mistake from the restart West pounced and score with a controversial score to level things up.
Things were called early with both sides looking to nish the game on a high in a somewhat bemusing manner!
Credit to West for their efforts and to Billingham for their character. It was clear to see Billingham hadn’t played for 4 weeks! Final score 17-17.

BILLINGHAM’S RUGBY GIRLS SHINE AT KINGSTON PARK
TWELVE GIRLS FROM YEAR 7 TO YEAR 10 BRAVED THE COLD TO REPRESENT BILLINGHAM AT THE FALCONS GIRLS’ RUGBY FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY 14TH JANUARY.
This was the rst
real test for the new recruits to the squad, and they excelled themselves. Nine U13s and three
U15s made the trip to Kingston Park,
supported by Colin Snowdon, Nigel Burke, Richard Morrison, and parents.
The U15s joined in with Houghton U15s: A big thank you to Houghton’s girls that welcomed them in and eased them in to their rst or second games of rugby. In exchange, Houghton’s handful of U13s joined with our squad to make
a full team.
HOUGHTON & OUR 3 BILLINGHAM GIRLS [ TOP LEFT ]
and their Russian visitors Erisei STM, and the U13s were one of four teams selected to play at half time.
They all looked to have had a great day despite the cold and bumps and bruises. I think it’s called character building, and the girls were not found lacking. They were as much a credit to Billingham as the rest of the girls were to Houghton.
Last but not least, it was a debut for a lot of our parents, who were all great. It was a long, cold day but your support and taxi driving duties were essential and very much appreciated.
KATE BYRNES U15s GIRLS COACH
BILLINGHAM & HOUGHTON U13 GIRLS
The U15 girls did really well, getting more and more con dent each game. The U13s won two
out of their four games, defending well and scoring some excellent team tries
with several phases of play. Billingham players were among the Guard of Honour for the Falcons

COLTS 71 vs PERCY PARK ACADEMY 15
BILLINGHAM WELCOMED PERCY PARK TO GREENWOOD ROAD FOR THIS FIXTURE.
Early exchanges take place in the Billingham half. The odd knock on from each team indicates an even match up. Park retain the ball and a penalty is given which they opt to kick for a
0 – 3 opening score.
From a home penalty Joe kicks for touch and places it nicely just inside the 22 for the line out. A driving Maul is recycled twice with Lewis W scoring, Fez stroked the ball over for 7 – 3.
Park score next plus a sweet conversion for 7 – 10.
A strong drive by the pack, then a break from Sam gave room for Al e to feed the line nished off by Coops, Fez kicks extras for 38 -10.
Al e on the break fed Harry B, who put on a neat juggling display for the crowd before controlling and taking in for the try, unconverted for 43 – 10.
Lewis W catch, set-up, ball moved along
the line to the usual runners and a try from Coops, Fez conversion 50 -10. Al e next, again, Fez converts 57- 10. Solid squad play move the ball up and Murph gets a deserved try, unconverted 64-10.
Park hit back with a Try of their own 64-15
Billingham pressure to keep Percy Park in their own half. Loose passing from Park creates another chance for Billingham as Harry B gets half a chance, tackled, recycle goes to Al e for the nal score. Referee indicates last kick and Storm pings it over for 71 – 15.
A great squad performance today, with every player doing their part in a well earned victory.
#OSIOS
JEFF MORIARTY COLTS MANAGER
Sam whips a high ball, Al e takes it like a leaping salmon and he’s to evades the tacklers to score. Fez converts for 14 -10 as the scores swing from side to side. A penalty is awarded and Joe steps up to kick for touch but taps to quickly release Al e, who bags the try.
Billingham work hard and are soon up the pitch, a neat break by Oscar sets up Al e whose pass is knocked on, the ref adjudges deliberately so a yellow is shown. Tap pen passed on to Lewis W who spins to evade tackles to set up Ben
H who moves it and Sam W pops for the try. Unconverted for 31-10. Half time.

CLUBHOUSE DEVELOPMENT NEWS
IT’S BEEN A FEW MONTHS SINCE WE APPLIED FOR PLANNING PERMISSION.
There have been some questions raised and a few changes to the overall plans but this does not affect what you see here today.
The main changes and concerns have been around the siting of the stand and whether this would impact upon the playing pitch to the left of the main pitch. We have re-drawn the plans showing that we can move the pitch over by 4m and still t it in with the necessary ‘run off’ space. This pitch has always been a ‘junior’ pitch and therefore cannot be longer than 90m and wider than 60m. Out pitch is just under these by a couple of meters and will remain so.
We have the support of the RFU and we are awaiting con rmation from Sport England and then hopefully we should be in a position to gain permission to proceed. Once again the RFU have been great supporting us.
The rst
part of the project will be installation of the Chameleon gym, followed by the stand once the funds are raised. I have had verbal promises from some club
benefactors to cover the cost of the stand, and once planning permission is con rmed I will be following up on these.
NORTH WEST ELEVATION
The main event of course is still a long way off. I have a plan and a strategy to raise £150,000 leaving us with about £150,000 more to nd.
This is where we need you. I was disappointed to see that this year very few teams have taken up the option to sell RFU Raf e tickets. This raises money both for your team and the club.
We will need to all pull together and work as one if we are to raise money to make this dream a reality. All suggestions and donations welcome.

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK • RESPECT • ENJOYMENT • DISCIPLINE • SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid of cials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Of cials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure
abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is de ned in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match of cial whether on or off the eld of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match of cials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other of cials, I’m sure you all understand how dif cult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more dif cult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match of cials.
Thank you all, enjoy the game!!
