CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
AFTER LAST SEASON, ARGUABLY
 OUR BEST EVER, ONE WONDERS
 HOW CAN WE IMPROVE?
THE 1ST XV MIGHT WELL HAVE FINISHED MUCH HIGHER IN THE LEAGUE WHILE THE LIONS ONLY NEED GREATER CONSISTENCY IN AVAILABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
 TO CHALLENGE THE ‘BIG THREE’.
2017-2018 was a great season, on and off the pitch and proved that is not all about the first team. However, this is all consigned to history and it is onwards and upwards into 2018-19.
However, how can the 3TM do any better? I was especially privileged to attend their end of season awards evening at Acklam Rugby Club and am pleased to hear that they are, again, up for the challenge this season. After all, a few clubs will be eager to knock them off their pedestal, but even so, it will live in the memory of us all that the 3TM boys went through the whole season unbeaten.
Into the North Premier League we welcome Vale of Lune and Wilmslow plus local rivals Blaydon and Alnwick. The latter two clubs have provided opposition for the Lions for many years so it will be interesting to see how we compete in the league.
We wholeheartedly
 welcome all players,
 officials and supporters
 of today’s visitors and
 shall endeavour to
 make sure that you

are treated well, both
 on and off the field.

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
IT IS NOT DOOM

AND GLOOM.
YOU HAVE THOSE OFF DAYS INDIVIDUALLY EVERY NOW AND AGAIN BUT FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE ONE ON THE SAME DAY IS RARE.
Last Saturday for the first time, and in a long time, it did not work out. In a way, it is a wakeup call that I have been shouting about for weeks. On any day, any team in the league can come up trumps.
The above statement is more obvious today. Alnwick are flying this season. For a recently promoted team they are dong fantastically well and it’s great to have another Northern team in the league; it has been a
long few seasons on our own. More recently, they have beaten some fantastic teams and will without doubt fancy their chances today. They have the 2nd best defence in the league. That being said we are electric at home and I think after last week there is a feeling this week we are going to really put it on someone.

The Lions have played a team that

(with respect) we would expect to beat and they have done that comfortably. Today is a step up in class and the boys are aware of that so no shocks. The win last week (near 100 points) was great but the best parts were the oldest back being 22, hat-tricks for two teenagers and plenty others.
The 3TM have a chance to play Rovers 2nds again, this time probably against a truer
2nd team. Great to see them challenging themselves. There will also be a sprinkle

of Colts talent throughout the senior section again too.
It’s been a good week training and I expect
 a reaction and performance.
3 big wins needed
 and wanted.

B
ILLINGHAM 3TM
THE MIGHTY 3,3,3TM
AS YOU MAY HAVE GUESSED THE 3TM ARE THE 3RD AND SOCIAL
TEAM OF THE CLUB, THAT BEING SAID THE STANDARD THAT THEY
PLAY BELIES YOUR TYPICAL 3RD TEAM.
Playing in the Tees Valley Social League, last season was possibly their best ever, winning the league with an unbeaten record, in fact the only blemish a game being called a draw after 50 minutes due to injury while they were comfortably in the driving seat.
Due to that this season would be a bit of an unknown. Could they keep the intensity while being the top dogs, there for everyone to shoot at. Unfortunately the answer being no with a few changes in players, already suffering a couple of defeats but more frustrating, a lot of cry offs from opposition.
That being said, of late they have really started coming into their own again, challenging teams of a higher level and coming out on top. In fact you will see them face off against Hartlepool Rovers Heughers who currently sit 2nd in the Candy League 2nd Division and this is certainly the standard they aim to be playing at.
The squad itself has a core of lads who have mainly been together 5 – 10 years and have come through together from the club’s fantastic junior setup. What is even better to see is they have become a good stepping stone for a number of Colts to take their first taste of senior rugby, and a fine addition each and every one of them has been.
What will the rest of the season bring?
Why not come down and find out for yourself? I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed, better still, why not pull the boots back on, everyone is welcome with the mighty 3,3,3TM.

ILLINGHAM GIRLS RUGBY
GIRLS GOING FROM
 STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
BILLINGHAM U13S GIRLS TEAM HAVE BEEN PERFORMING WELL IN ALL THE DURHAM COUNTY FESTIVALS SO FAR THIS SEASON.
Lunch and a hot bath. Big thanks to the parents who did all the driving, supporting and no doubt cleaning their cars afterwards.
Hope the conditions help the girls appreciate the excellent facilities we have here at Billingham with the AGP. Given the weather is going to limit our ability to train on the grass we will now start training on a Tuesday night 5.30-6.15 on the AGP and then 6.15-7.00 on the grass, weather permitting. We will also bring forward training on a Sunday to 12.00-1.30pm on the AGP, as this means Budgie, the coach, can get home in time for his Sunday dinner!
The U15s girls did not get involved in the last festival but they have been playing in mixed teams with other clubs in the festivals to date, even if we do not yet have numbers for our own team. The girls develop best when they are playing games and this has been really apparent from their improvement after matches.
We still need to recruit more players at both age groups as we want to field full 12- a-side teams at U13 and 15-a-side at U15.
We have been doing a lot of coaching in Northfield and St Michaels and both have lots of girls with enthusiasm and potential. We just need to get them to come down the Club. Our girls can help and we are looking to host some school games.
Lets spread the word, anyone interested turn up and give it a try.
With festivals so far being 8-a-side we have played as a squad and had some great matches. Kayleigh Farrell, our Irish skipper and Ellie Horsley, top try scorer, have been the stand out players but all the squad are improving with each game.
The team went to Gateshead on a cold wet and muddy ground last Sunday. It was the girl’s first taste of winter rugby in the mud. Most loved it, some were not so keen and all were glad to get home for a late Sunday

 with new players and parents.
We have some spare kit to loan for new players until they decide if it’s for them.
We train on Wednesday and Sundays. We also have matches on some Sundays and can be away so pop me or Edgy a message and your child could be the next ‘Star Player’.

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT,
 DISCIPLINE & SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid officials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to

ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary

has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge

or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.

Why do I need income protection insurance?
Unfortunately, with most sports, there’s often a risk
of suffering an injury which could not only stop you playing, but also affect your ability to work and earn for a period of time. Income Protection Insurance pays you a monthly tax-free income until you’re well enough to go back to work.
What use is private medical insurance to me?
Private medical cover helps with unexpected costs,
so you can focus on getting back into the game. It
is designed to cover the cost of private medical treatment for acute conditions like an injury suffered during a game. This could be anything from a few sessions of physiotherapy, to more complex procedures.
