CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
A YEAR AGO I WONDERED
HOW WE COULD IMPROVE
ON SEASON 2017-18.
WELL, WE DID JUST THAT AND HAD THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON ANYONE COULD IMAGINE AT BOTH 1ST AND 2ND TEAM LEVEL.
That’s all now consigned to the record books and we start again with our squads strengthened by several new faces plus last year’s colts. Macclesfield, Blackburn, Morpeth and Carlisle are all newly entered into what looks like being a very challenging and competitive North Premier League and whichever club we entertain this afternoon, I wholeheartedly welcome your players, officials and supporters. You will be treated well both on and off the field regardless of the final result.
Billingham RUFC currently have three senior teams plus Vets and Colts while the Youth Section has teams from U7 through to U16. In the Ladies section our focus is mainly
on girls at the various age levels although
we hope eventually to turn out a Senior Ladies XV.
The Club is very lucky to have a group of magnificent volunteers working hard on a weekly basis and we are also extremely grateful to all parents who bring their children to join the minis and stay involved to become coaches, team managers and even referees.
However, none of this could happen without the leadership of our hardworking Executive Committee supported by the Rugby Committee. Mention of Club Manager,
Nick Dalgleish is necessary
as practically all our
sponsors have come
onboard as a result
of his hard work and
long may this continue.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
SO AT LONG LAST THE
NEW SEASON IS UPON US.
I HONESTLY CAN’T THINK OF THE LAST TIME THAT I WAS SO READY
FOR THE START OF A NEW SEASON, IT SEEMS LIKE AN AGE SINCE THE LAST ONE FINISHED.
Could it be the anticipation of what is to come? Could it be just that it’s a World Cup year? Or could it be the fact that we start the season with changes in personnel and as Senior County Champions?
Irrespective, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Wirral RUFC back to Greenwood Road and we trust that their committee, members and supporters have an enjoyable day. My goal as Chairman is to make Billingham Rugby Club the best amateur club we can be, professional in every sense but paying players. I include in that our facilities, both on an off the pitch but above all our hospitality. My goal is to make you feel welcome, to be hospitable but above all when you leave, want you to tell other clubs and other people that Billingham Rugby Club is a great place with great people. Finally, I want you to add that they play great rugby too!
The other thing with a summer break is a
lot happens.
A huge thanks to Stewie and his crew for all of their effort over the summer, the pitches look fantastic. Okay, yes an AGP always does....well actually no! It takes a
lot of effort and a lot of hard work to ensure that our pitch stays true and in tip-top condition. What is the miracle however is the condition of the other three pitches, in particular the repair to the damage from when the stand was delivered. Guys, well done and thank you.
Finally, the other major change is that on about the 22m line, on the stand side of the pitch nearest the club house, their will be a space this year. Yes, our very own Phil Parkin who passed away over the summer will leave a space in the place that he loved to stand and as we go over in the corner, it will be a little quieter than usual this season. Phil you were a true club man and you are missed and will be remembered. Rest in peace.
So on that note, I wish everyone a good day and I wish Billingham a great result.
Our support is everywhere, near, afar and above and so we need to enjoy the day, enjoy the start of a new season but above all enjoy result.
On that point let’s turn to todays match.
A new season! A new squad! A new set of goals. You could argue that applies to both teams because the great thing about a new season is that it’s a blank canvas; a pre- season, some new players, some departures, some colts coming through and some injuries. When it comes down to it, it is all about the 80 minutes, the commitment and the result. As it stands we are second behind Alnwick on alphabetical listing, by 6pm our goals is to be top on merit!

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
12 WEEKS OF INTENSE WORK AND WE ARE BACK!
IT’S BEEN A FANTASTIC PRE SEASON, CARRYING ON FROM THE GREAT SEASON LAST YEAR AND CONTINUING THE FEEL GOOD FACTOR WITHIN THE CLUB.
New signings, returning players and no lost players will hopefully help us continue to grow and improve.
This season more than ever we need a large squad, we already have long term knocks and with the league as tough as ever we need everyone.
There’s a buzz around the club and carrying on from last season everyone is buying into the philosophy and club ethos. Numbers at training have been outstanding over 80 at the fitness and 45 on a Thursday, the lads want to succeed and are putting in the work.
It’s been the toughest selection for a long time, no doubt some disappointed folk but there is always opportunities to shine.
As we set out last season, no team has an easy ride at Greenwood Road and we hope to continue that. With only 1 loss at home last year and 2 the year before we are targeting an improved home record!
Exciting times ahead as we look to push on this season and continue to develop the whole senior section. The Lions and 3TM kick off the league campaign next week and both teams have mouthwatering selections. A bit of luck with injuries and availability and it should be a cracking year.
We start off with a real test against an established national 3 team in Wirral. Always strong up front and a physical side we expect nothing but a an extremely testing encounter. 1 each last year as the home teams took the spoils. Wirral will be on a high after beating a level 4 team in pre- season and with a new coach they are bound to be bouncing.

BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB COLTS
COLTS: GROW YOUR
OWN STRATEGY.
BILLINGHAM HAVE HAD SOME SUCCESS IN DEVELOPING AND RETAINING PLAYERS COMING THROUGH OUR YOUTH SECTION OVER RECENT YEARS.
Just check out the Billingham team today
and most will have come through our Youth teams. This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts team who focus on the integration of our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.
One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take
9
Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

CLUBHOUSE DEVELOPMENT NEWS
PLANNING PERMISSION HAS BEEN APPROVED AND NOW IT’S FULL STEAM AHEAD ON RAISING FUNDS.
THE CLUB COMMITTED FUNDS
FOR THE CHAMELECON GYM
AND WE’RE PLEASED TO HAVE
THIS AMAZING ATTRIBUTE TO
THE CLUB NOW IN PLACE.
The stand could be the next step and we have had commitments from some club supporters to donate the required sums
and we will follow up on this over the
coming weeks.
As for the main development we are looking at this from a phasing point of view and we have appointed Anderson Ellis
who drew up the plans to help with the tender process and the project management. However, we have a long way to go until then. This is where everyone can help.
We need £200,000. I am working on some plans to raise half of this, but we need each and everyone of us to start fund raising and donating towards the project.
We will be launching the Buy a Brick campaign towards the end of the season,
but let’s not wait until then. The Senior Tour committee recently sold approx £1,000
of RFU raffle tickets with over £500 being donated to the 24-7 project fund.
From small acorns...
We have 17 teams and if each raised £500 that would be £8,500 and if we could do
that every 3 months it would take 3 years.
Of course we will be looking for lots of other ways to raise money, but if we want a better, bigger club for all, then we all need to help out and it starts with us.

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT,
DISCIPLINE & SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid officials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to
ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary
has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge
or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
