AFTER LAST SEASON, ARGUABLY 
 OUR BEST EVER, ONE WONDERS 
 HOW CAN WE IMPROVE?
THE 1ST XV MIGHT WELL HAVE FINISHED MUCH HIGHER IN THE LEAGUE WHILE THE LIONS ONLY NEED GREATER CONSISTENCY IN AVAILABILITY AND PERFORMANCE 
 TO CHALLENGE THE ‘BIG THREE’.
2017-2018 was a great season, on and off the pitch and proved that is not all about the first team. However, this is all consigned to history and it is onwards and upwards into 2018-19.
However, how can the 3TM do any better? I was especially privileged to attend their end of season awards evening at Acklam Rugby Club and am pleased to hear that they are, again, up for the challenge this season. After all, a few clubs will be eager to knock them off their pedestal, but even so, it will live in the memory of us all that the 3TM boys went through the whole season unbeaten.
Into the North Premier League we welcome Vale of Lune and Wilmslow plus local rivals Blaydon and Alnwick. The latter two clubs have provided opposition for the Lions for many years so it will be interesting to see how we compete in the league.
We wholeheartedly

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
A TOUGH JANUARY
FOR US TO BE A SUCCESS THIS SEASON, THIS MONTH WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE CRUCIAL ONE. 

3 AWAY GAMES AND ONE TOUGH HOME 1 TODAY. ADD TO THAT INJURIES AND SOME BAD LUCK... 
 IT’S BACKS AGAINST THE WALL.
Over the years games have always been close between us and Rossendale, as always, we are expecting a physical challenge and not a backwards step 
 to be taken.
More than ever I need us to step up. We are such a young team but whenever we have had
setbacks the boys have learnt, come back the following week and shown everyone what it means. There will be more changes to the squad this week as we juggle injuries and some missing. Regardless it’s a strong team and that’s how we need to play, as one.
The Lions make a decent trip to Wharfedale with a very young side but one with plenty of dangerous runners. Great to make the trip to a higher team and give it a real go.
3TM are playing really well with ridiculous numbers, long may it continue!
Colts are at home hoping to get back to winnings ways, they too have injury problems but it’s all about blooding that talent and enjoying the ride.
Some real tough games today but we have spoken about fight and determination and 
 I think we will deliver.
Now some might say 3rd in the league and performing very well is great, well I know what we are capable of and we need a reaction to achieve that.
Last week was one to learn from, we didn’t meet the challenge that was laid out in front and let the game pass us by. That won’t happen today.
It’s the first step

BUSY FIRST HALF 

OF THE SEASON
AFTER TRAVELLING TO DURHAM IN SEPTEMBER WITH ONLY 9 PLAYERS, WE HAVE MADE RECRUITMENT THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS!
Successful social media and ‘bring a friend to training’ initiatives proved successful and we now have 17 players registered and playing regular rugby. We have also had a boost to the coaching team. Head Coach Mark Irvine usually supported by Dan Burns, a 1ST XV Player and coach, when he is not busy coaching Durham County teams, 

and Nigel Burke are now joined by two fantastic Colts, Reece Kundu (left - who 
 is currently training with Scottish Exiles) 
 and Harry Chapple (right).
The highlight of our season is fast approaching, our annual tour. The boys have been busy baking and selling cakes, packing bags and braving the North Sea on Boxing day to raise money to pay for it. 
 This year, to build on the relationship between the Senior and Junior teams, we are travelling to Kirkby Lonsdale to play their U14’s on the day of the 1ST XV clash. We are all looking forward to it and hoping to see 2 big wins that day.
It really is a testament to the players that week in, week out they turn up, play hard and, regardless of the result, come off the pitch with a smile and say how much they enjoyed the game. We are building in numbers, confidence and team spirit week on week and we are very proud that they really do embody the club motto: 

Our Spirit Is Our Strength.
If you have a boy in Year 9 and you want to drag him off his games console and get him to mix with a good bunch of lads, maybe they are doing GCSE PE and need a sport to support the grade, get in touch and 
 bring them down.

With brand new players the coaches have gone back to basics developing the team’s skills on and off the ball. Apart from a couple of experienced players our pack is very new to the game, and having lost a couple of experienced backs in the last few months, a few players have had to get used to playing in new positions. They have all rose to the challenge and although the scoreboard doesn’t often show it, our team is getting better week on week.

ALL OUR KIDS ARE FRIENDLY 
 AND ALWAYS WELCOMING.
We have a mix of skill levels in both girls and boys within our team. Currently we have 8 players and looking to expand.
We've had 3 games so far in the season and happy to say we won all three, although we don't count score it's all about the kids taking part and having fun.
As long as this happens the kids will develop and progress naturally.

We have some spare kit to loan for new players until they decide if it’s for them.

The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to

ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary

has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge

or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
