CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
AFTER LAST SEASON, ARGUABLY
OUR BEST EVER, ONE WONDERS
HOW CAN WE IMPROVE?
THE 1ST XV MIGHT WELL HAVE FINISHED MUCH HIGHER IN THE LEAGUE WHILE THE LIONS ONLY NEED GREATER CONSISTENCY IN AVAILABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
TO CHALLENGE THE ‘BIG THREE’.
2017-2018 was a great season, on and off the pitch and proved that is not all about the first team. However, this is all consigned to history and it is onwards and upwards into 2018-19.
However, how can the 3TM do any better? I was especially privileged to attend their end of season awards evening at Acklam Rugby Club and am pleased to hear that they are, again, up for the challenge this season. After all, a few clubs will be eager to knock them off their pedestal, but even so, it will live in the memory of us all that the 3TM boys went through the whole season unbeaten.
Into the North Premier League we welcome Vale of Lune and Wilmslow plus local rivals Blaydon and Alnwick. The latter two clubs have provided opposition for the Lions for many years so it will be interesting to see how we compete in the league.
We wholeheartedly
welcome all players,
officials and supporters
of today’s visitors and
shall endeavour to
make sure that you
are treated well, both
on and off the field.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY.
YES IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR,
THE YULETIDE LOGS ARE STARTING TO BURN, THERE IS A CHILL IN THE AIR AND IT’S TIME FOR THE CHRISTMAS BREAK.
But not yet, nope, we may have past the halfway point in the season but we have one more match before the break. I would like to welcome Harrogate to Greenwood Road for the first return match of the season. It’s also the first return we have had for the 1st/2nd double headers.
At the half way point we are on 50 points, second in the league and of course are very pleased with our performance thus far. However, last week was a pointer to how tough matches can be and that sometimes, even our best might not be good enough. Of course we were not at our best and we played against a very physical, organised and well drilled side and Harrogate as we know from the opening game of the season will be another tough challenge and we will have to be at our best today.
Our first season in Level 5 resulted in relegation on less points than we have today and this is a good indicator of how far we have come as a club, a squad and a team. Back in September both 1st and 2nds were able to claim a W against Harrogate and they will of course becoming here today to return the favour, so we will have to be focused and ready to defend our home turf against a motivated club.
You will all see the patch to the left of the centre of the main pitch and yes, we are preparing for to take delivery of a new 100 seater stand that will be erected hopefully in February. This has been a long term ambition and one that Dave Hyndman has been a major supporter of and a major
contributor to the funding. I know Dave
is actively looking for others and he has indicated that some have made some commitments to support this project.
Thank you to those who have but we are looking for further funding. Erecting the stand will of course commit a considerable amount of money, almost £30,000 and without support this will put a major hole in our project fund and defer further our ambition for an extension. So please, if you feel you can contribute please reach out to either Dave or myself.
Remember that if you are a member of the club and want a discounted ticket for the England U18s match at Billingham on Sunday March 17th you only have until the end of December to buy online. Please note, irrespective of your membership status, no one will get access to the club at any time on this day without a ticket and there will be no access to the car park, the club house or the grounds.
Big thanks again to the Running Club.
Enjoy your day and I’ll see you after the match in my Christmas Jumper for our annual photo shot.
That only leaves me to wish all of you
here today and all of our members and supporters across all teams and age
groups a Merry Christmas and a healthy
and safe New Year.
Who knows what 2019
may bring but it is
starting to feel a lot
like Christmas!

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
A CHRISTMAS
DOUBLE-HEADER.
WE SAY GOODBYE TO 2018, A MASSIVE YEAR IN THE CLUBS HISTORY AS WE KEEPING ON PUSHING AND PUSHING TO BE
THE BEST WE CAN.
It’s been great to be a part of a thriving senior section, one that it desperate to put last week right.
Unfortunately I couldn’t be with the lads last week, so I am determined to help in any way to get back on track.
It won’t be easy, Harrogate will be a huge test and probably just as physical if not more than Hull. We won a wet game at the start of the season at their place and I think the weather will play it’s part again.
So revenge will be on their minds but also they are in the chasing pack with us so it promises to be a tight game with lots to play for.
The Lions are also playing Harrogate again after our wins at the start of the season, we will be relying on youth this week as we are missing some experience.
The 3TM with travel to Sedgefield hoping to carry on with their great season.
Finally... Christmas Jumper Day is a top
day and night at the club and we don’t
lose on this day! Stay down and enjoy
the entertainment!
Good luck to everyone, thank you for your top support in 2018 and enjoy your festive break.

ILLINGHAM LIONS
LIONS ROAR!
AFTER A DISAPPOINTING PERFORMANCE LAST WEEK THE LIONS WERE HUNGRY TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS AND THERE WASN’T A BETTER MATCH FOR IT THAN MIDDLESBROUGH AWAY!
The side have always been in great league position and are historically hard to beat on their home turf. So preparation during the week was key and a strong squad was selected to go forward looking for the win.
The weather although slightly chilly was surprisingly pleasant for this time of year and provided some what great conditions to play the wide and expansive game we aim to as a club.
We took the high energy gained from the warm up into the game building phases and dominating possession before putting the first points on the score board in the 14th minute with Crilly dotting down in the corner from a seemingly effortless text book Billingham ‘Wanger’ over the top cut out pass from Colt Joe Ross who then went on to score his second hat-trick in 2 games for the Lions.
Unfortunately for the hard working Middlesbrough side that would be the
only time they crossed the line that day
as Billingham’s defence remained fierce, always moving forward.
The hardest point of the game came in the form of yellow cards. Three were shown in the second half with the first two being in minutes of each other. That lack of discipline could have came back to bite us if the defence wasn’t so impressive.
The last score of the game came from the ball being moved to the back 3 who attacked the open side in Fijian style offload fashion, putting fez in for the final try of the day. This try has since been dubbed as “best try ever”. I find it hard to disagree.
The tries were earned from an incredible consistent defensive effort by the team for the entirety of the game. The Lions were aggressive in the tackle and relentless, never seeming to give the opposition an inch. A try came however from our Achilles heel of the day. A string of penalties early in the game walked Middlesbrough to the line with their powerful ball carriers who capitalised on our lack of discipline.
Great win from the lads and another awesome step up from Colts Sam Wilson and Joe Ross (above).
We look forward to the Harrogate home double header today using last weeks victory as the bench mark to go off.

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT,
DISCIPLINE & SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid officials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to
ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary
has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge
or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.

Why do I need income protection insurance?
Unfortunately, with most sports, there’s often a risk
of suffering an injury which could not only stop you playing, but also affect your ability to work and earn for a period of time. Income Protection Insurance pays you a monthly tax-free income until you’re well enough to go back to work.
What use is private medical insurance to me?
Private medical cover helps with unexpected costs,
so you can focus on getting back into the game. It
is designed to cover the cost of private medical treatment for acute conditions like an injury suffered during a game. This could be anything from a few sessions of physiotherapy, to more complex procedures.
