Senior Coach Update
Another pre-season comes to a close as 
 we look towards a big year for the club.
It perhaps hasn’t been the pre-season we wanted in terms of game time but the lads have worked extremely hard during the sessions and we have looked to bring a few new things into our game.

It’s a senior section buy in this season, no individual teams. We travel together a lot this season and that should/will help create a real buzz which is bubbling away at the minute. I’ve noted this point several times over but the lions struggled a lot with fixtures last season, no issues this season! To succeed at an amateur club it’s a requirement to have 3 successful happy sides who have players who jump between the lot.
We have big expectations this season, there is no shying away from that. I won’t go into detail but we have discussed the standards we expect on and off the field as a group. Commit to those and we won’t be far off. It is going to be a roller- coaster with some unknowns thrown in mix this year, one thing we always guarantee is entertainment, sometimes I would like us to maybe just win a boring game when needed but that’s not our DNA. You get value for your entry fee and the lads who pull on the shirt appreciate it. The support last year was fantastic and we know we have supporters buses booked and filled already. We will repay your faith.
All starts 3rd of September. One club, one big buy in.
We don’t know much about todays opponents but we know they will be buzzing and up the challenge. Greenwood Road is a fortress and it’s very tough for anyone to get a result here.

We have had a host of new signings, returning players and Colts stepping up which will hopefully give us that depth we perhaps missed at crucial points last season. This is where the post Covid struggles hit most clubs at grassroots level. Above all else the most important factor is keeping our current crop of players engaged and at the club, we are lucky to have such a committed group who pay to play for the club, quite a few have been offered ‘expenses’ to leave even to lower level teams. Their commitment to the club shows how much we value each other.

Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years.
Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams.
This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts 
 team who focus on the integration of 
 our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through 

a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.

One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

For business events during the working week we have two rooms suitable for meetings or training, both with plasma screens which will be available for use with presentations. Rooms seat 20 and 60 respectively. There is ample parking and catering available.
The rooms are also available for private functions at anytime, with a maximum capacity of 120 in the main bar 

or 90 seated for dinner. We can also provide a marquee and bar in the grounds for large functions, barbecues and similar events.
Members of the club are also able to purchase tickets for England international matches.

Club Code of Rugby
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf 
 of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that 
 a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you 
 all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her 
 life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
