CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I’VE NEVER BEEN AS EXCITED AT THE START OF A NEW RUGBY SEASON. NEW AGP AND SUPER FLOODLIGHTS; NEW NAME FOR OUR LEAGUE; NEW COACHING TEAM IN PLACE; MORE ADULT PLAYERS THAN EVER AT PRE-SEASON TRAINING PLUS THE INSIDE OF THE CLUB SPRUCED UP.
WHAT’S NOT TO EXCITE?
We welcome into our league this season, Kirkby Lonsdale, Pocklington and Preston Grasshoppers for the first time in our recent history and welcome back Harrogate and Birkenhead
Park. Whichever club is hosted this afternoon, I wholeheartedly welcome all your players, officials and supporters who have travelled all the way to Billingham; we shall make sure that you are treated well, both on and off the field, whatever the ultimate result.
Billingham RUFC currently turn out three adult teams plus colts in the Senior Section, the Ladies and Girls Section continues to go from strength to strength while the Junior Section has teams from U7 through to U16. Meanwhile the Vets
will be looking for more and more games now that the old boys have
got “the bug” to play once again.
Thanks are in order to a lot of people without whom this club could not function. We do aim to be the leading (amateur) family rugby club in the North
of England, so thanks to all the parents who bring their children to join the Minis, stay on to become coaches, managers and volunteers.
We are lucky to have lots of volunteers but none of this could happen without the leadership
of our hard working Executive Committee.
Again a special word of thanks goes to Club Manager, Nick Dalgleish, for his hard work over the summer months with our sponsors, many
of whom have signed up again for this season. Lastly, a big thanks to all those sponsors, without whom the club wouldn’t be quite the same.
Remember, our motto is... “Our Spirit is our Strength”.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
WELCOME PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS TO GREENWOOD ROAD AND TO BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB FOR THE FIRST TIME.
So, whilst this is your first visit, it will also be your last for a while as we won’t be meeting again next year. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on winning the inaugural North Premier and wish you good luck for the season ahead.
It’s clear why you are the champions only being defeated once this year.... so far. Our view of our match with you earlier in the season is that we did not give a good account of ourselves and we will be looking to show some of our spirit today and give a better performance of ourselves. I am not sure that a match against Pocklington is a good warm up to a match like this, but we can’t take away from the players that we have put over 100 points past them in the two matches and
Weather aside, which has been shocking of late, today should be a great day. Yarm used the AGP today 10 till 12 and we have Eastern Counties Ladies versus Durham County Ladies in a warm up for the impending County season, followed of course by the main event. Big thanks to Duane for sorting the band for this evening. Rugby, music and beer. All we need is some sun and it would be a perfect day!
Huge thanks to the Running Club and Mark Thompson for sponsoring todays match.
We truly appreciate your support and for the running club, thank you once more for your continued sponsorship.
I would like to say a huge congratulations to our third team, aka 3TM, who have gone unbeaten all season and the other week went on to win the Merit Social league.
We only have one more home match after this to come and Harrogate away in between so please get your fix while you can and enjoy the day.
For those not travelling to Harrogate next week the 2nd team, aka Lions, are at home (yes at home) against DMP in the 2nd team County Cup.
Finally, remember that we are an amateur, family club – yes we do NOT pay players – and we live the rugby values. With that in mind please respect the players, officials, supporters and staff – abuse of any form is not allowed but more importantly is not Billingham Rugby Club.
#OSIOS
MARK ARMSTRONG CLUB CHAIRMAN
we just need some of the same expansive rugby and discipline today and we will be looking to make amends for the away fixture at Hoppers.
It’s been a good season for us and we will be looking to sign off to make it a great season. We are safe
in 6th place but have not given up on 5th or even 4th.
Hoppers followed by Harrogate away will not make that an easy finish, but we have points to prove in both matches and the Kendal at home.

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
IN WHAT WAS A MUST WIN AFTER A TOUGH COUPLE OF WEEKS, LAST WEEK TURNED INTO A GREAT PERFORMANCE FULL OF RUNNING RUGBY.
With injures to senior players, even in the warm up, we picked ourselves up and put on an entertaining game. It had been a tough few weeks prior with 2 losses: robbed in 1 and unfortunate in the other.
This week sees another level of challenge, already promoted, already champs and with 1 loss, Preston are a formidable opponent. The last encounter we didn’t show our capabilities with a red card, and maybe some nerves, we didn’t show up. I am confident this week will be different, no pressure just out there to chuck the ball about and grab that win. It’s a game we are excited about!
The mighty 3TM, still unbeaten and now champs, travel to local rivals Stockton, who no doubt will have a strong team out after our seconds put 90 on them.
Great to see some ladies county rugby on before us today, followed by live music tonight.
The club dinner date has been set for the 11th of May. Get in touch with Stewy, myself or team managers for tickets.
Junior Cup Finals are coming up so let’s follow the lads as they are the future!
Let’s finish strong in what has been a great year. #OSIOS
PETER EVANS SENIOR COACH
The past few weeks have seen us blood some new young talent and it’s great to see we are in a position to do so.
The Lions prep for next week’s cup final against Blaydon today, hopefully bringing home a big win.

SETTING OUR STANDARDS HIGH
AND CREATING A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL
OUR GOAL IS TO ENSURE THAT BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB IS A LEADER ON ALL FRONTS AND THAT WE PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT FOSTERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF RUGBY TALENT ACROSS ALL LEVELS AND ALL AGE GROUPS.
As part of this and on behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our supporters, members and visitors of our code of conduct, specifically our zero tolerance towards any form of abuse or intimidation. This extends to players, supporters, members, volunteers but above all match officials and members of our staff.
is strictly prohibited unless specifically invited say for example to use the PDQ machine and failure to comply will be classified
as a form of abuse/ intimidation and be dealt with under the same terms as above.
In addition, it is the responsibility of all parents/ guardians to ensure that children are supervised at all times, both on the playing areas but above all in the club house. If children are found to be unsupervised they and their parents/guardians maybe asked to leave the club. No reason needs to be given or discussion provided. If you have an issue with being asked to leave the premises, please raise this with a Committee Member at an appropriate time and not with any member of staff. Any argument against this will also be seen as a form of abuse/intimidation and will be dealt with accordingly.
We want our club to remain a warm, friendly
and safe place and whilst we cannot always control those who visitors we can lead the way by demonstrating the right values and behaviour as one club.
Our Spirit is our Strength
MARK ARMSTRONG CLUB CHAIRMAN
On and around the pitch we expect the
highest standards, and this includes positive reinforcement of the rugby values and our unequivocal intolerance of abuse to players, officials and other spectators. To be the best we need to lead from the front and ensure that we do not let our standards drop.
As an employer we also have a duty of care
to ensure that our staff have a safe working environment and as such, any form of abuse whether it be verbal, physical or even indirectly through comments to others will be dealt
with swiftly and severely through the rugby committee.
In addition, there are areas of the club that are out of bounds to all but staff and committee members and these are the kitchen, behind the bar area and the office. Entry into these areas

DURHAM COUNTY LADIES VS EASTERN COUNTIES LADIES
TODAY WILL SEE DURHAM COUNTY LADIES TAKE ON EASTERN COUNTIES LADIES IN A WARM-UP GAME TO THEIR FORTHCOMING COUNTY SEASON.
The game is set to become an annual fixture which will provide both teams a great preparation for what is set to be a very tough campaign.
The fixture will be held in memory of the late Lynsey Burns who unfortunately passed away last year. Her loss had a great impact on her team mates and I can only imagine the opportunity to play in her honour is a proud day for everyone involved.
As a club who is just developing the girls section, we are really hoping that today provides inspiration to both those young ladies watching and also anyone supporting who may not of tried our great game yet.
FINALS TIME OF THE YEAR
ONCE AGAIN, WE ARE PROUD TO BE REPRESENTED AGAIN BY CLUB TEAMS IN A FEW FINALS THIS SEASON.
If you can spare the time to come along to one or all of these games to support your club it would be greatly appreciated. We have some exciting young teams in these finals. However, your support on the day for them will no doubt give them the extra boost to deliver the win.

WEST HARTLEPOOL VS BILLINGHAM U16s
BILLINGHAM WERE HOSTED BY WEST HARTLEPOOL LAST SUNDAY MORNING WITH CONDITIONS PERFECT FOR RUGBY.
Billingham kicked off with a perfect kick from Shane Ellis allowed the dynamic prop Dylan Penny to lay the marker which a big hit. The ball quickly turned over but some bad decisions the ball was knocked on. This was the tone of the first half. Good things followed by a mistake.
and kept knocking on the door. West broke the door down and an offload under the posts was intercepted by quick thinking Max Rafferty to race a full 100 metres (almost caught after slowing down) to dot down. Ben Armstrong converting.
West 0 Billingham 12.
This score seemed to have got Billingham on the front foot. Battering ram runs from Marc Ward- Skilbeck, Tom Walker and Martin Donnelly meant the try line was in sight. It was newly turned second row Luke Williams turn to barrel over the line.
West 0 Billingham 17.
Marc gathered the kick off took the ball forward and it was Powerhouse Lewis Simon to get over the whitewash next with some inter play from Louis Teasdale and Shane Ellis.
West 0 Billingham 22.
Some again indifferent decisions from Billingham missing 3 on 1 overlaps meant the scoreline remained the same until the last 7 mins. Billingham took the game forward through their forward pack going from side to side pulling West apart allowed the ball to be spun wide to Lewis Simon to find a happy Jack Li to dive over in the corner.
West did get the last word following Billingham being penalised, a quick tap allowed West to find a gap on the outside to score in the corner.
West Hartlepool 5 Billingham 27 was the final score. Not the complete performance but another W ground out.
Following some changes in the team the subs came on Harry Armstrong, Samuel Waldock Connor Brown and Isaac Nelson seemingly steadying things. The forwards kept it direct and it was the quick thinking of Sam Collishaw to dart round the corner of the ruck to dot down. Conversion missed.
West came back at Billingham with successive penalties found themselves in Billinghams
22 for the first time. A catch, drive a quick breakaway was thwarted by Thomas Farnaby for Tigger to jackal over the ball to steal a penalty back.
Billingham continued to boss the first half but mistakes continued meaning Billingham couldn’t add to the scoreline.
Half time:
West Hartlepool 0 Billingham 5
After some strong words from the coaching Team more subs made Billingham seemed more confident and direct in their play. However it was West that had
the upper hand early doors

CLUBHOUSE DEVELOPMENT NEWS
PLANNING PERMISSION HAS BEEN APPROVED AND NOW IT IS FULL STEAM AHEAD ON RAISING FUNDS.
of the season before we put it in place. The stand could be the next step
and we have had commitments from some club supporters to donate the required sums and we will follow up on this over the coming weeks.
As for the main development we are looking at this from a phasing point of view and we have appointed Anderson Ellis who drew up the plans to help with the tender process and the project management. However, we have a long way
to go until then. This is where everyone can help. We need £200,000. I am working on some plans to raise half of this, but we need each and everyone of us to start fund raising and donating towards the project.
We will be launching the Buy a Brick campaign towards the end of the season, but lets not wait until then. The Senior Tour committee recently sold approx £1,000 of RFU raffle tickets with over £500 being donated to the 24-7 project fund. From small acorns :).
NORTH WEST ELEVATION
So, every time you pull on a shirt, every time you walk in a changing room, every time you watch your team play, ask yourself this, “what can I do to help us all achieve our dream?”
The club has committed funds for the Chameleon Gym, but we are going to wait until the end
We have 17 teams and if each raised £500 that would be £8,500 and if we could do that every 3 months it would take 3 years. Of course we will be looking for lots of others ways to raise money, but if we want a better, bigger club for all, then we all need to help out and it starts with us.

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK • RESPECT • ENJOYMENT • DISCIPLINE • SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid officials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure
abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
Thank you all, enjoy the game!!

WANT TO TRY RUGBY?
BEGIN, BELIEVE, BELONG. BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB WANTS YOU!
THIS SEASON BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB YOUTH SECTION ARE VERY PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY RUGBY IN ONE OF OUR 12 YOUTH TEAMS, FOR ANY BOY OR GIRL FROM THE AGE OF 6 TO 16.
Although we have record numbers of playing members in the Club, we always welcome
more and some teams, such as our girls teams, definitely need recruits.
Over the coming weeks we will be in the local schools to help recruit players for all age groups. The Club would also like all its members to do their own bit of recruiting too with friends,
family and neighbours.
